Wow, I recently had the opportunity to see Patrizio Buanne and Matt Dusk live in concert at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, DC. They are both very gifted vocalists/entertainers. A few hightlights of each:

Patrizio Buanne: I became a fan of Patrizio Buanne the first time I heard him sing and viewed his TV special on PBS, which I promptly bought his CDs and have been listening daily ever since. He is incredible, not only in voice, but also a fabulous entertainer. Can he dance, oh my, yes he can and talk about rythmn and style -- incredible! He engages the audience in a wonderful way and brings them right into his heart and on stage so his singing becomes very personal to each person as though he were singing just to you! I certainly hope we are going to see much more of this darling man here in the US and oh please, Mr. Buanne, give us a DVD soon! You can visit Patrizio's website here: Patrizio Buanne

Matt Dusk opened for Patrizio and he was an excellent choice for opening act! Not only does he have a unique voice and charismatic personality but he also dances (wearing those adorable red socks!) and is a fun entertainer to watch. In so many opening acts you are biting your lip waiting for it to be over and get to the "star" performer but I can say it was a pleasure to watch and listen to Matt! When Patrizio Buanne walked on stage at the Benedum Center Thursday night, his charismatic presence shot through the hall like a lightning bolt.

The 28-year-old Italian baritone presented a program of mostly American and Italian standards with some new pop tunes to an adoring sold-out crowd, ranging from 8 to 87 years old.

Buanne, who was introduced to American audiences a little more than a year ago through PBS via WQED television, kicked off the evening with "A Man Without Love" from his freshman disc, "The Italian." A quick follow-up with "Come Prima," and the crooner quickly showed off his vocal chops.

The crowd sang along and clapped to favorites "An Evening in Roma," "Parla Piu Piano" (the theme from "The Godfather") and "Volare." He spent most of "Bella, Bella, Signora," passing out roses to fans -- as cliche as this may sound, his eagerness to please and give back to the audience comes across as truly genuine.

His magnanimity extended to members of his talented band, including members of the Pittsburgh Chamber Orchestra. At one point during the show, he asked the musicians to join him downstage to allow the audience to take photographs.

In an instant, it was as if the paparazzi had arrived, and blinding camera flashes, including the senior set clicking away with their cell-phone cameras, filled the darkened hall.

A medley of favorites from Dean Martin, Elvis Presley and Tom Jones, including "Hound Dog" and "Don't be Cruel," brought back images of early Presley. An earlier medley of songs from Naples, Italy, showed Buanne's command of both musical genres in both presentation and delivery.

His baritone certainly follows in the steps of the musical greats he emulates.

A preview of "Forever Begins Tonight," the title song from his next release, shows Buanne moving toward a more contemporary sound.

Buanne finished the show with "Il Mondo" and then an encore performance of the catchy tune "Home to Mamma," and the audience enthusiastically clapped to the very end.

Golden Rules of Theatre Behavior

We love the theatre, ballet, music performances and especially the performances at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and attend there often. One of the particular things we enjoy is to be able to watch and hear a performance without interruption, or obnoxious or unruly behavior by other audience members. In our recent visit to KCPA and a concert at the Verizon Center it is amazing what differences there are in audience behavior. I was reminded of an article I read in the Kennedy Center program magazine several years ago with this statement and question: “American audiences are out of control. Are they? It then followed with these “golden” rules.

Golden Rules of Theatre Behavior

“A primer: Remember part of one’s agreement as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and self-restrained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you will during bows and curtain calls.

1. Take it easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne.
2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things.
3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins.
4. Make sure all cell phones, beepers, and signal watches are OFF. And don’t jangle the bangles.
5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.
6. Note to lovebirds. When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view.
7. THOU SHALL NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part.
8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack, or shopping bags.
9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous.
10. The old standby: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

These are excellent rules and I could add a few of my own like cracking chewing gum, standing up in front of the people, invading their seat and body space, eating food/drinking/spilling, playing with children, nursing, applying makeup/combing hair, on and on ad infinitum. I was brought up in church where proper etiquette and discipline was quickly learned so when we attended events at theatre, ballet, opera, and live performances, proper etiquette was mandatory or else! It appears that the “fine” art of theatre-going and good behavior is a thing of the past. That is sad indeed for all. This article gives us something to think about the next time we attend an event whether theatre, ballet or even church. What is our behavior like?

"The Voice" a/k/a Josh Groban wowed the packed Verizon Center last night so much so that his fans are still several feet off the ground, and very wide "Awake" after a fabulous night of musical performance at its best! Josh was in "pure voice" and "form" and enraptured the crowd with his breathtaking, full and glorious vocals. I cannot say it better than New York Times music critic Stephen Holden, “His voice is full but not overripe; his enunciation, whether in English or Italian, impeccable. His intonation is nearly perfect. He always sings directly on the note. At its upper end, his voice shades into pure, sweet head tones. He doesn’t sob. He respects the melodic line of a song and brings to everything he sings an intrinsic sense of balance and proportion."

Josh is not only a beautiful vocalist but also a witty, giving and wonderful person. He was open, funny and just melted into the audience with the fans loving every second of it, some not even able to contain themselves from jumping to their feet in excitement and not a few standing on their chairs to see the curly-topped darling as he appeared in the crowd singing "In Her Eyes" and giving them that adorable smile, hug or handshake as he passed by. He also touched the audience in a special way when he dedicated his song "Awake" to the troops after his personal visit to Walter Reed Hospital yesterday morning. Josh is the genuine real article folks ...a true performer with a heart. He not only loves the music he writes, sings and performs but he loves his fans and audience and puts his love in action in providing everyone with a wonderful concert and a special memory to take home. "You Are Loved" is exactly what the fans felt after his incredible performance. This is music history in the making...if you miss his concert, you are missing the phenomenon of pure music and a memory for a lifetime. Wow! What a voice, what a guy and what a night! Come back to DC soon Josh!

He's finally here. Today, March 13 at 8:00 p.m. Josh Groban's "Awake Tour" takes the stage at the Verizon Center. For a hometown gal, a real redblooded true Washingtonian, you cannot have a better combination and to boot, we are having 70 degree weather! Wow, how much better does it get than this? It doesn't! Watch out Washington, those vocals will even blow the cherry blossoms off the trees! Of course, we plan to make a two-day feast of it, staying in a super-duper 4-star hotel and eating at the best of the best that DC has to offer because what else could you do at, before or after a Josh Groban concert but go first class? This will be a truly "classy" two days and we are positive that the powerfully strong fan base in DC will be sure to give Josh a hearty, happy and wonderful welcome! Wake up DC, Josh Groban and his Grobanites are in town! Classy (aka jacy)
