So since my T-Mobile contract was over so took the 45 minutes to wait in line at the Pentagon City mall and joined the iPhone 3G masses.
Right now I'm looking for suggestions on accessories specifically docks, cases and headphones with mics.

Though I'm pretty sure the people at my old office had a pool going over how quickly it would take me to buy an iPhone, I've managed to hold out this long. Though the holding out is about to end on August 17th right after my T-Mobile contract ends. I'll be heading to my local Apple store and picking one up.

Fuck Metro

Every time I ride the Metro the trips have been progressively worse. This trip involved the following:
1) At least one broken escalator
2) Screaming baby
3) Four hood rats all piled into one seat being loud and obnoxious
4) A very crowded train
5) A trip home that took almost three times as long as it should have

90 degrees or not I'm biking into work tomorrow.

For example, the built-in sound speakers don't shut off when you plug in external speakers or headphones right now. Not great but I'm sure I'll find out what the issue is with some searching. Also, the external monitor port doesn't recognize the correct resolution out of the box - I've seen online that I'll have to manually tweak the xorg.conf file, but I haven't done it yet either. Other than that, I haven't had a single issue, and I know that these issues could "fix themselves" as well, as Ubuntu continues to develop and my weekly updates bring fixes and upgrades."

If I've said it once, I've said it 100 times, if I have to edit an xconfig file by hand the OS isn't ready for prime time.
My most recent adventure was my work laptop which boots both XP and Ubuntu. The amount of effort it took me to get dual monitor support to work right in both OSes was nothing short of the birthing a breach cow and the actions that remain are still a nightmare.

On XP dual support needs to be reconfigured almost every reboot and depending on how your screens are setup have fun with OK on one monitor and Cancel on the other, yep it is that good.

On Ubuntu you'd better not want to use the power of your 512MB nVidia card with Ubuntu because you have to dig to get it to work right and the warnings are scary, but don't worry once you've gotten it setup and working an update will be pushed downstream that will require you to rewrite your xconfig yet again.

With both OSes you'd better get really good with the config screens and files b/c if your home setup doesn't match your work setup oh well you get to do it every time you switch it up! YAY!

If you don't want to spend your time looking for hacks to make your hardware work properly just buy a Mac and enjoy your extra time.

So I'm cleaning up the disaster room aka my office since I don't work from home all of the time the room has gone into more disarray. Part of the problem is that I feel bad getting rid of old electronics, so I'm putting stuff up for grabs some I'll probably ask money for, some I'll just give away. I've got a shit ton of wires and cables, seriously anything you need I've probably got one from USB , to F/W to ethernet to video and audio hook ups. Then there are the various video game systems. PS, PS2 (with controllers and composite out cables) Dreamcast (with ethernet and keyboard and memory cards) and a Gamecube for good measure. There are also a bunch of phone adaptors, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Nokia and then of course the phones that went with all of these but are of no use b/c all of the associated phones are dead. Anyway anyone looking for some random stuff let me know. Oh and because people can't figure it out my email address is dan@ this site dot com

Wishing Death

I used to think it was a moral wrong to wish death upon someone.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think for a moment that wishing (aka praying) has any real effect on the world but I still thought it wrong to "wish" ill will towards another person. Upon further reflection, I've changed my mind. There should be no remorse in wishing ill will towards a person that promotes the death or great suffering of others.

That being said Jesse Helms I wish it would have happened much, much sooner. I hope you have a miserable dirt nap with Reagan and Thurmond.

DC Laws I Wish Were Enforced

There are a few DC Laws that I wish were more vigorously enforced.
1) People who violate the no standing or stopping signs, this is a real pain in the ass especially when biking as we don't have much room or respect in the street in the first place and now the violators, who are usually double parked put bikers in extra jeopardy. There should also be not be exceptions made for this for delivery trucks, taxis, hired car services or emergency personnel who are not actively addressing an emergency.
2) Failure to signal a turn, I don't get why people don't use a turn signal especially to signal a right turn it's not like someone will block you from it.
3) Littering you don't have to be a member of the Sierra Club to know that throwing your trash on the ground it just plain wrong, seriously you were raised better. This also applies to cigarette butts.
4) People who park illegally, I don't care if you are in church or not get up earlier to find a legal parking spot or pray for one.

DC Law enforcement, this is a great opportunity to help generate revenue for the city while making it a nicer, cleaner and safer place to live and work. (Read this Fixing Broken Windows)

Its finally time to put some effort in my site, I noticed that I was getting some hits from people in Milwaukee (my hometown) and I've been working on some projects that I think are cool so I wanted to share. The first addition was a page about this server and my home network. I'm hoping people can learn something about home networking from networking page eventually. The other things I wanted to share is my attempt to build my own Tivo and my attempt to make mp3s available all over my house.
