I'm not sure where it came from. Probably Keris. Of course I've altered it to suit my own ego.

Films That Remind Me of Childhood

Star Wars - I went to see this at the other end of town with my babysitter, Keith. Not the greatest baby sitter but he had a good mind for films. I loved Star Wars and I immediately fell in love with Han Solo (like millions of other young girls). I don't remember how old I was but I remember Keith taking me for soda. It was a self dispenser and you walked around it and filled up your own plastic mug with whatever flavour you wanted. I followed Keith's example and took a smidgen from each flavour, there had to be over twenty. I don't remember what it tasted like, I just remember it being a good day at the movies and I wanted more.

Officer and a Gentleman - This was about the time the huge laser discs came out. Boy was that short lived. My best friend Barb's sister had a laser disc player and would tease us with clips of Richard Gere. She wouldn't let us watch the whole thing because of the language. Being sneaky, like all prepubescents, we waited until she was out and watched the whole thing numerous times until we knew the dialoque and all the dirty songs by heart. Today, if any one asks what my favourite ten movies are, it's in there. I've seen over 100 times. Seriously. And need to get another dose of it.

Childhood Films Where Removal was Necessary

Are you kidding? My mother would never remove me from anything that made me cry, scream or have nightmares. Good parenting skills there. I think my mother was born without the common sense gene. I don't know where I got it from. Osmosis from my teachers and babysitters maybe. The films that made me wail the most were: Ole Yeller, ET and Bambi (no child under 12 should be allowed to watch these films). The films that made me have nightmares: Exorcist, Amityville (the upside, I fell in love with James Brolin) and Nightmare on Elm Street (the upside, I fell in love with Johnny Depp).

Films that Defined My Teens

Pretty in Pink / Sixteen Candles- Every girl could relate to Molly Ringwald but who on earth couldn't or didn't fall in love with Andrew McCarthy and Michael Schoeffling. Director John Hughes films made a big mark on my teens.

The Karate Kid - Believe it or not, this film made me stand up for myself... and other people. It's probably the reason why I gave two bleeding noses before I made it to highschool. Don't worry, I've mended my ways. I go for the jugular now.

Films Seen Multiple Times at Theatres

I can't think of any. Money was tight growing up so I can't imagine paying to go to see the same show. Outside the theatre the movies I've seen the most are Officer and a Gentleman, Alien, Poltergeist, Robin Hood (Kevin Costner), Reservoir Dogs, 13th Warrior, Forrest Gump, Backdraft, Resident Evil, Erin Brockovich, Coal Miner's Daughter, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Hope Floats. They are movies I absolutely never get tired of seeing and can come in in the middle and still watch it and cry and laugh or get scared at the appropriately places.

First Date Film

Jeff took me to see Alien Nation on our first date back in 1988. Eek! It was an ok film. I know it had spotted aliens in it and it became a tv series afterwards but I don't remember the storyline. I was way too nervous. And considering how lost I get in my movies that is a big thing.

Nightmares from Films

I mentioned three above: Exorcist, Amityville and Nightmare on Elm Street. Others were: Ghoulies, Pet Semetary (especially the scene with the kid under the bed and the Achilles tendon - I'm ruined), Incubus, Bees, The Blob, The Brood (the bloody finger prints on the ballisters!), The Hills Have Eyes, Magic (I hate ventriloquist dummies). Quite a few of these aren't scary now. They are just stupid. But I wasn't old enough to BE watching them the first time.

Films that are Guilty Pleasures

I'm a sucker for a good Harlequin Romance movie (no I don't read the books). It's like being a deer caught in the headlights. I can't look away.

Last Film I Saw at the Theatre

We have satellite (some promotion we got with the Internet) so we don't go to the theatre that often. That and it is so bloody expensive. $11 per person. We've seen two recently because Jeff's parents gave us some gift certificates. Prince Caspian because I'm a Narnian nut and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull because I'm a Indie nut. We still have some coupons left and I really want to see M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening (I love his movies-all of 'em).

Favourite Film Else Seems to Know About

I'm going to guess, The Man from Snowy River with Tom Burlinson. I had such a crush on him. Cowboys on horses with Australian accents are sexy.

***
Topic Links
* More Blogging MemesMoehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-32126328559960359112008-06-08T16:19:00.004-04:002008-06-08T16:23:25.552-04:00Another Day, Another LensTwo actually.

First up is a plus size shopping lens highlighting Etsy, a mediator between sellers and buyers of handmade goods. I enjoyed the lens and pretty much agreed with almost everything he said. So I thought why not mention a few of my peeves in my blog. Lets go for 10. And if you are reading this, I tag you.

People who leave their car running, park in front of the doors and run into a business when there is a parking space 10 - 15 feet away. I mean if you are going to print it out and frame it then by all means let me know and I'll send you a better copy. Or worse, give me an English lesson on the difference between it's and its. I think at 38 I know the difference. It's a typo, let it go people. Feel free to participate and link in the comments to your:

Do you recycle? Yes, every week. Flyers, cardboard, hard plastic, soft plastic, aluminum, and glass.

Do you do you laundry with hot or cold water? I do laundry with cold or lukewarm water. I also use cold water Tide.

What kind of light bulbs are in your house? We use the new energy efficient fluorescents. I was very resistant to using them but I've adjusted and don't even notice the difference anymore. Now, if only we can find a safe way of disposing of them.

Do you compost? Yes, we compost about 10 lbs of food waste a week. I have two composters in the back yard. Here's a lens I created on composting tips. I need to work harder at using things more quickly.

What kind of vehicle do you drive? We are currently leasing a Toyota Sienna but are looking into an energy efficient alternative. Hopefully they will be a little bit cheaper or there will be some type of financial incentive by the time that comes around.

Do you use plastic or reusable bags when grocery shopping? Both. We reuse any plastic bags we get until we can't use them anymore then they get recycled. We use a bunch of canvas type bags we've collected over the years for grocery shopping and I carry a hobo bag with me that pretty much holds anything. Here's a lens I created on eco-bags.

What are three ways you conserve energy?
* By not letting the water run when brushing teeth.
* Shutting off lights when leaving a room (or when DH has left the room).
* By not letting the car idle when it's not moving.

Moehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-71041050801722530942008-05-22T19:37:00.003-04:002008-05-22T20:39:40.886-04:00Chubby UnicornMy chubby unicorn came today. I absolutely fell in love with this t-shirt when I was over at Red No. 3 a few weeks back. I immediately headed over to Woot Shirt to place an order. I patiently waited seventeen days for it to arrive (pretty standard). It's here!

It's the most hidious color of green you can imagine. Well you can see for yourself below. But I absolutely love the unicorn. I giggle every time I look at it. I might have to make it into a poster so I can look at it all the time. I showed Jeff when he came home and it took him a moment to catch on to what the unicorn was doing. Again, little girl giggle.

Anyhoo, Woot's t-shirts are generally released for one day at the bargain price of $10 but it's still available at the day after price of $15 (what I paid). I bought a 3x and it's huge and really long so it will probably be a nightshirt after I torture Jeff by wearing it out in public first.

I must be the only one who sees the charm of this little guy. I know you've been waiting, make sure you take a moment to let it all sink in:

Moehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-76974073062021072792008-05-18T14:37:00.003-04:002008-05-18T14:52:46.661-04:00America's Next Top Model Goes PlusFinally! And sort of. This past week Whitney Thompson won America's Next Top Model (ANTM). I say "sort of" because Tyra made a point of saying at the end of the show that Whitney is Full-figured, not plus size. I believe she is the 6th curvy chic to attempt ANTM but the first to make it to the top. There are lots of rumours about whether it was a fair decision or whether it was a pushed decision. The latest rumour even goes so far to say that she was approached on a plane and asked to put on some weight to compete.

I have mixed feelings about it. I'm glad that a full-figure model is finally in the top position and I think Whitney is beautiful. Where do I conflict? I didn't think she was necessarily the best choice to win. For the most part I was enamoured with Claire. After she was demoted Anya began to grow on me personality-wise and from the get-go she produced amazing photos as well as winning a number of photo challenges. I think in terms of talent Anya probably should have won.
When you compare Whitney to the previous plus size models who have been on the show I don't think she is the strongest. But I guess everyone can make comparisons on whether it was a good choice or a bad choice. I wasn't a judge so I really don't know what went on in the judging room other than the clips they show on the tube.

Regardless, I'll try to be supportive of Whitney because, the curvy chics have to stick together when possible and I do think she'll be a good role model. I look forward to seeing her Seventeen magazine spread in July.

***
Topic Links
* More on Whitney ThompsonMoehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-57533670920947023332008-05-01T23:26:00.001-04:002008-05-01T23:28:29.139-04:00What... I still have to do a bit of weeding and reshaping of the beds but everything looks clean. Today, Jeff and I are going shopping! Yes, I'm more thrilled than he is. He's my second opinion and my grunt.

We're going to Connon to get a bush to replace the spot where I dug out the euonymus last fall. It caught some kind of euonymus disease and dropped it's leaves (after ten years) and had to go. Ever since the dog has taken it upon herself to dig to Mongolia every chance she gets. A few weeks ago Jeff had to put a little fence up to keep her out. Now she just lies next to it looking longingly.

While I'm out I'm hoping to get some herbs for my first herb garden, a rose retainer, a vine holder and maybe a lawn ornament to replace the one I left out side over winter that disintegrated (bad me). In reality, since I'm taking my "second opinion" I'll probably only end up with the bush.

Spring is under way, and I'm officially gardening... the good stuff anyway. At least for another month until the humidity skyrockets and I end up hibernating again.Moehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-44023173531953194242008-04-16T00:01:00.001-04:002008-04-17T15:30:46.065-04:00My Beauty BagChristina Jones over at eBeauty Daily is having a cool contest to win a new beauty book by Harper Collins (Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair from the Beauty Authority) in addition to a beauty bag stocked with Sephora products.

The catch? The kids purchased tickets to do the dirty deed. They were quite gung ho about it. He said he'd shave the moustache if they raised $1000. They raised $1300 so the moustache went bye-bye. I'm just glad to have the air gone. I'm so not into the Fabio look. I just finished cleaning up their handy work. I'll post some footage when I figure out how. I'll need the tech boy to get them off the camera first.

When I left the school I got the urge to get my hairs cut too. Actually, I've been thinking about it for a while but haven't had the time. So I went over to First Choice because I had to got to Future Shop to get the Firefly series (Serenity ROCK! Browncoat forever!). Here are the results. It still needs some work. I haven't had bangs in a long time so I'll have to retrain the natural part away. This is my good side:

I want to keep growing it out but eventually get deeper points in the front and into a "v" in the back. It's been sitting in it's cardboard sleeve ever since it was delivered. Occasionally I would take it out and admire it then slip it back in. This week I finally got off the pot and went to Micheal's to find a frame for the bloody thing.

Micheal's had it's usual 40% off frames so I packed up the car with the print and another item I wanted to framed (a piece of the original wallpaper from the kitchen - before we ripped it out and painted the walls - that I've been saving forever). After 45 minutes of looking at the same frames over and over I limited them down to four that I thought would look or were appropriate for this period painting (1895). A cleark happened to be going by and I asked her opinion.

I held up the photo to each of the frames and she picked one up and said she liked it the best. She offered to put the print in the frame so I could get a better view. Well, snapping arseholes, didn't it look like it was made for it!

It's now hanging in my pseudo office/retired diningroom and I've probably looked at 50 times with adoration since I've hung it. It's perfect. I love it. I know that's wrong but I just don't care. The wall is actually a dark taupe and the hues in the frame match the hues in the dark wood of the buffet as well as the copper frame on the next wall. You can click on image for larger view of my masterpiece.

Oh, yeah, and here's the other one. It's ok, but doesn't create the same warm glow. It's hanging by the door in the kitchen (yes, my walls are really that color - I don't have an ounce of Martha).

Overall, the frames cost more than the contents (Flaming June was like $5) but they were a good deal. I probably could have waited a week and used one of their 50% off coupons but by then I wouldn't have had the inititavie and would have missed out on all this adoration.

If you want to buy me a humongous version of Flaming June I would gladly accept. Have a great weekend!

***
Topic Links

Buy From Art.com

Moehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-76248129593288709662008-03-19T22:19:00.002-04:002008-03-19T22:23:37.075-04:00Seal SlaughterA friend sent me this today. It's that time of year again...

Dear Friends,

First of all, I want you all to know how much you mean to me. I love
sharing my life and music with you and am so happy to have your
support. If you know me personally, you know that I am a "cause"
person as my mom likes say. :) I've always stood up for the
underdog, since I was a little girl. Right now in Canada, there is a
catastrophe happening that needs our attention.

Every year, Canadian fishermen use their off season to slaughter over
300,000 baby harp seals for their fur, many of them babies as young as
12 days old. Some of them will have been skinned while still concious
and able to feel pain. The money that these fishermen make with these
furs is only a small portion of their income. You can do searches
online and find video of the slaughter. But I have to warn you, it is
horrific. The first (and only) time I saw the videos, I cried a river
of tears for these innocent little souls. Please take my word for it
and know that these animals are dying horrible deaths with no real
purpose other than to decorate human beings. Ack!

So what can you do to help? Please boycott Canadian seafood. A
financial blow to the commercial fishing industry's seafood exports is
key to bringing about an end to this vicious slaughter.

If you are willing to boycott Canadian seafood to save the seals,
please take a moment to visit the website below and sign a pledge.

http://www.hsus.org/protect_seals.html

The following is a list of seafood species that typically imports
from Canada. There are other sources of imports, however, so you MUST
ASK your grocer or server at a restaurant where their seafood comes
from. Grocery stores in the U.S. are required by law to label seafood
with its country of orgin. Because of this, it is easy to avoid
Canadian seafood if you aren't afraid to ask where the seafood comes
from.

If you order one of the following, please find out it's country of
origin before ordering:

Lobster
Scallops
Herring
Sardines
Snow Crabs
Shrimp
Perch
Flounder
Cod Haddock
Mussels
Trout
Mackrel
Oysters
Sole
Salmon

Many restaurants and grocery stores have already pledged to stop
buying Canadian seafood including Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and
Publix. But many major restaurants have not yet joined the campaign.
At any restaurant, ask your server about the origin of their seafood
before ordering. If they import from Canada, explain to them why you
will not be ordering seafood from them.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this email. I hope
that you are moved by my message to tell others about this issue.

Blessings,
Kristie
Do what you can.Moehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-5504938795382971432008-03-14T17:11:00.005-04:002008-03-14T17:27:57.414-04:00Cotton Ginny SupersaleI had a wonderful time at Cotton Ginny today. Jeff and I took a drive to Kingston because I decided I was in need of replacement sweatpants and they have a huge CG there. I know, sad, what a way for Jeff to spend the last days of his March break. It didn't matter that there was a Future Shop near buy because I was still trying on clothes when he came back.

I didn't get any sweatpants but I did get 3 t-shirts, 3 tank tops, 1 cardian, 4 capris, 2 pants, and a jean jacket. I came out with two arms full and said I'm taking these and these. Jeff's face dropped but he didn't say a word. I didn't say anything either as I thought I would let him sweat it out until the cashier rang it all in. You'll never guess what it came to so I'll just tell you. $68 including tax! I know, crazy isn't it. Everything was on sale PLUS they had buy one get one free. FREE! I'm now have the washing machine doing over time. Well, sort of, the spin is on the fritz (repair guy coming next week with new springs). Jeff was so relieved. Because lets face it. women's clothing is not cheap.

This has to be the best sale I've ever hit. I'll have to mark it on my calendar for next year. I will definitely have sweet dreams tonight. And Jeff won't have any nightmares.Moehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-35863351867877858442008-03-09T18:17:00.007-04:002008-03-09T21:40:26.805-04:00Yes Virginia the Sun is Shining TodayIt seemed like the snow fall would never stop. Snow! You already know I'm a grand complainer when it comes to weather but this is rediculous. We are in the process of getting another 30 cm of snow. Hello? Goddess of weather! Please stop. It's time for the goddess of spring to come out and play. Ok, rant finished.

Good news. Mia Tyler contacted me this week to say she liked the Squidoo lens I created to highlight her. How nice was that? Super! It's actually kind of a weird feeling to know that someone you admire has looked at something you created about them. Her only complaint (which wasn't even a complaint, because she's so nice) was that I had a movie listed that she never appeared in. Yes, it was embarrassing but she was really good about it.

On the computer front... I finally jumped in and bought a new laptop. The lagging of my old one was really slowing things down as I couldn't have more than two or three programs open without it working at a snail's pace. Hard to be productive.

I've been looking for awhile and was thinking I'd go with another Dell but then Future Shop had an suberb deal on an HP Pavilion (dv9726ca) computer. I am motoring along with 2GB Ram, 250 GB Hardrive, webcam (which I'll probably never use), 17" monitor, AMD Turion 64 x2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-60. What else do you need to know? My old one was Intel Pentium 4 with a 15" monitor, 4oGB Hardrive, 512 MB Ram. So now I have a Mercedes (but not really). The screen is so big! Scheeee!

That's it for the excitement this week.

***
Topic Links
* Mia Tyler Squidoo LensMoehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-27715458596320112632008-03-03T15:11:00.008-05:002008-03-07T14:02:47.355-05:00My Favorite BlogsI Haven't been around my own blog much. I guess that means I've actually been busy working. I started a new day planner with the new year and while it hasn't been perfect I find it has made me more productive in some areas. I thought for a change I would share some of my favorite blogs with you.

Keris Staiton - I met Keris a few years ago due to a shared interest in Christopher Eccles, who was then playing Dr. Who. She's Canadian by birth (but living in the UK) and we actually had the opportunity to meet during one of scouting missions. She's cute, witty and entertaining and so is her family.

Junkfood Science - No, it isn't about junkfood. Well not really. Sandy Szwarc, BSN, RN, CCP gives the straight done on all the health reports out there by reading the small print.

Big Fat Deal - The blog is written by two plus size dames who go by Mo Pie and Weetabix online. They have a no nonsense attitude toward fat acceptance and the media. And they are pretty entertaining while doing it. If you ever want to bookmark a fat blog this should be one of them.

Fab Sugar - Nothing like a little celebrity envy. This blog has nothing to do with being plus size it has a lot to do with being fashionable and a celebrity. And there is lots of votey things.

The F-Word - Yep, another fat blog. I have many. This one is written by Rachel. The first thing that attracted me to this blog is the title and Rachel's voice keeps me going back.

Have a great week!Moehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-54049171605048442642008-02-23T16:59:00.004-05:002008-02-23T17:18:43.258-05:00Book TripI have a $12 gift certificate from the local independent bookstore burning a whole in my pocket. I'm going to use it up on Monday and I have narrowed my choices down to two books.

The first is Lisa See's Peony in Love. Lisa is the daughter of author Carolyn See who wrote one of my favorite writing books, Making a Literary Life. Lisa is also the author of another book on my shelf, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Both books deal with Asian families and dark personal histories.

The other book is self-help. I've decided I complain too much about pretty much everything. No one's complained about my complaining but I think it would make an improvement on my personality. The titled is A Complaint Free World: How to Stop Complaining and Start Enjoying the Life You Always Wanted. An editor at BellaOnline recommended it.

What I end up with remains to be seen.

***
Topic Links
* BellaOnlineMoehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-59918990827315022762008-02-15T14:48:00.004-05:002008-02-15T15:15:21.932-05:00The Beautiful Women ProjectA few years ago I went to a women's night out dinner and met artist Cheryl-Ann Webster. At the time she was just starting to undertake an art project that to this day still inspires me. It all started with a simple conversation she had with her 13 year old daughter about her best friend, also 13, who was saving up money for a boob job. Cheryl was floored (as were we all) and decided to start the Beautiful Women Project in hopes of inspiring positive thoughts about the female body in all it's forms.

Cheryl, cast 120 female chests from the collar bone to the hip bone and decorated each of them with an essence she picked up from conversations she had with them. It's been a labor intensive project but it isn't over. She's still trying to get the word out via gallery showings of the busts anywhere she can afford to send them and set them up. She also does informative discussions on self-esteem and body image at the same time.

She's had a number of showings (I went twice!) so far and all have been successful drawing the attention of girls of all ages as well as the men in their lives. Recently to help with costs (and to get a wider audience) Cheryl-Ann and Laurie Gordon produced a book about the endeavor highlighting the process and providing anecdotes about each bust.

My copy arrived today. And I have to say it is much better than I thought it would be from the Lulu.com description. It's a heavy semi-gloss soft cover about the size of a magazine. I'm about half way through and I have to say that it is wonderful to be able to revisit the busts at my leisure and to read about the artists interpretation of each one. I highly recommend purchasing this book which is $30 (costs go towards future showings) and if you get the chance to check out the showing.

***
Topic Links
* Interview with Artist Cheryl-Ann Webster
* Beautiful Women Project Gallery Showing
* Purchase Beautiful Women Project: The Book from LuluMoehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-90083527953652961662008-02-13T22:01:00.006-05:002008-02-13T22:26:21.671-05:00Valentine's Day TreatsTomorrow is Valentine's Day. I've decided to treat my body kindly for a change. At 1 p.m. I'll head over to the beauty shop for an afternoon of spoiling myself rotten:

* 15 minutes of electrolysis (o.k. this isn't the spoiling part but it is necessary. thank you late 30s hormones)
* 1 hour foot reflexology treatment (again, not sure if I'll feel spoiled)
* 1 1/2 hour facial (definitely spoilage going on!)

Followed by a dinner and movie with Jeff. Yes, I'm dragging him to a chick flick. What kind of wife would I be if I didn't (rhetorical question)? I've already told him we're seeing Ryan Reynolds new movie, Definitely, Maybe.

This may seem extravagant but I'm worth it. So are you. Go spoil yourself!Moehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-55422929439114246152008-02-05T12:54:00.000-05:002008-02-05T13:03:43.447-05:00A Sign of SpringIt's February. There's a foot of snow outside. Guess what I found? You'll never guess so I'll just tell you.

I was in the basement getting the washing machine ready for a load. I bent down picked up a pile of light colors and underneath my eye caught a little round orange bump a bit smaller than a frozen pea. I put the laundry in the machine and went back to inspect. It couldn't be... I bent down closer. Yep, a lady bug. Spring is almost here!

Don't worry, I didn't squash it. It's a lady bug they are a protected species in our house (well except the time I came home to 78 of them and vacuumed them up). I found him a home on the aloe plant in Jeff's office. He needs the company more than I do.Moehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11256185.post-82592343954079916032008-02-04T17:49:00.000-05:002008-02-04T17:56:34.804-05:00My Fave Super Bowl CommercialI don't watch the Super Bowl. I have no interest in sports ON the tube what-so-ever but I do like to take in the Super Bowl Commercials.

Of the ones I've seen these two are my favorites:

***
Topic Links
* E-TradeMoehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03638446320976744376noreply@blogger.com
