A La Cañada High School graduate is making her family proud and is expected to make a difference in the lives of future generations of Asian Americans, through her recent clinical research work in the Liver Disease Center at Huntington Medical Research Institute (HMRI) in Pasadena.

Penn State medical student Joanna Song, 24, who graduated from La Cañada High School in 2003, was one of 15 young people selected to be part of the institute’s 2008 Summer Research Program. During the 10-week program, Song helped with research into hepatitis B and its correlation with liver cancer in Asian Americans.

The Altadena Guild of Huntington Hospital and the Lucile Horton Howe and Mitchell B. Howe Foundation sponsor the summer research program, which is conducted under the direction of Dr. Victor Pikov, principal investigator of HMRI’s neural engineering program.

“Students bring with them some theoretical and laboratory background in biology and chemistry,” Pikov said in a news release earlier in the summer.

“By the end of the summer, after receiving one-on-one training and experience working with HMRI researchers, [the students] have had the chance to apply their accumulated knowledge in solving real-life scientific questions. This is invaluable experience for the training of our next generation of medical research scientists,” he added.

Song earned a bachelor of arts degree in molecular cell biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a graduate student at Penn State Medical School. She plans to earn her medical degree in 2011 and return to the Los Angeles area to continue work in the medical field, quite possibly in hepatology, the study of the liver.

She is the oldest daughter of Joyce and John Song, of La Cañada, first-generation Korean Americans, who own Ka-San Korean BBQ restaurant on Foothill Boulevard in La Crescenta. She has a sister, Sharon, 18, a freshman at Harvard University, and a brother, Joseph, 13, who is a student at LCHS.

Song said she became interested in medicine as a youth because her brother was sick a lot and her mother also had medical problems. “I wanted to become a doctor so I could help them,” she said.

Her parents have been very supportive of her decision to enter the medical field and are proud she was able to participate in the research institute’s summer program, she said.

Although her initial interest was primarily in the gastrointestinal system, after her work with the institute, she’s “leaning toward hepatology,” she said.

While participating in the summer research program, students select the laboratory and biomedical project that best matches their interest. The students attend weekly lectures by HMRI scientists, practice laboratory procedures and work alongside medical professionals.

Song said she helped read medical charts and family histories on some of about 350 patients of one of the world’s leading hepatologists, Dr. Myron J. Tong, who is credited with discovering that Hepatitis B is one of the primary causes of liver cancer. Tong and his wife, Lori, an RNMSN, who works with her husband as office manager at the Liver Center, served as mentors for Song and inspired her to continue her dream of making a difference in the medical field.

“I learned a lot from the Institute and from working with Dr. Tong. I found out about liver disease and I learned about doctor-patient relationships. It was a wonderful experience and I’m very interested in continuing in research after I graduate,” she said.

Other students in the summer program researched medical topics such as molecular neurology and pathology, cell biology, and epilepsy and brain mapping. At the end of the program, the students presented their research projects for review. The program allows students to explore a career in medical research while developing friendships and networking opportunities with others in the medical field.

Tong said Song’s research will help identify markers of progressive liver cancer in patients and will result in two future medical publications.

Lori Song added that Song is “a bright girl who is really well-liked at the center. She will have a bright future in medicine.”

More than 230 men and women came together at La Cañada Flintridge Country Club on Monday, June 23 to raise awareness and funds for cancer research during the 4th Annual 2nd Lt. Andrew Torres Memorial Golf Tournament. Torres passed away in April 2004 from a rare form of liver cancer.

“We are grateful to our wonderful supporters and the organizing committee,” said Leonard Torres. “As a result of their efforts, this event has raised over $250,000 for cancer research in the last four years.”

Prior to his death, Andrew Torres asked his parents to help raise funds to help find a cure for this disease. Leonard and Anita Torres have taken his wish and turned it into a reality.

The golf tournament has grown each year with the help of family, friends and individuals, some who never met Andrew but were so touched by his concern for others suffering from this disease that they rallied with the Torres family.

Committee members now include a number of Andrew’s former classmates from Flintridge Prep, who, along with his sister Rachel Torres, have taken on leadership of the event.

“Swing for a Cure” is the theme of the 4th Annual Andrew Torres Memorial Golf Classic, to be held at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club on Monday, June 23. Andrew Torres, a La Cañada resident, was a 23-year-old Marine 2d lieutenant at the time of his death, from cancer.

The annual event, organized by friends and classmates of Torres, has raised over $190,000 for cancer research at Huntington Memorial Research Institutes in Pasadena. This year’s co-chairs are his sister, Rachel Torres and classmate Matt Linder.

This year’s event will feature a hole-in-one car, courtesy of Star Ford, as well as ample tee prizes. For non-golfers, a limited number of tickets are still available for the silent auction and dinner.

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE - Members of the steering committee for the fourth annual Andrew Torres Memorial Golf Tournament announced that STAR Ford in Glendale is sponsoring a partial zero emissions, 2008 Ford Focus SES "green" car as the hole-in-one prize.

The tournament will be held June

23, at the La Ca ada Flintridge Country Club. Nearly $190,000 has been raised for cancer research during the first three tournaments.
"We are thrilled with the support that local merchants and community members have given the tournament again this year," said Anita Brenner Torres. "It was Andrew's request that we help seek a cure for this disease."

Andrew Torres, a 1998 graduate of Flintridge Prep, died on April 3, 2004, at the age of 23, following a courageous battle with liver cancer. Torres graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2002.

On April 9, 2004, the Secretary of the Navy posthumously awarded Torres the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

There are still spaces open for golfers to participate in this outstanding tournament. In addition to the hole-in-one event, there will be a silent auction featuring many wonderful items up for bid.

All proceeds will benefit cancer research at Huntington Medical Research Institutes.

Twenty-six committee members, friends and family involved in the third annual 2nd Lt. Andrew Torres Memorial Golf Tournament, held July 9, gathered together at a La Cañada Flintridge home last weekend for a barbecue and to celebrate another successful event to raise funds for cancer research.

“We are so lucky to have a wonderful committee to run this event,” said Anita Torres, Andrew’s mother. “Len and I are so grateful to have such wonderful friends and Andrew was blessed to have such loyal and loving classmates.”

Andrew Torres was only 23 years old when he passed away in 2004 from a rare form of liver cancer. He graduated from Flintridge Prep in 1998 and was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. At his request, Andrew’s family and friends began to plan fundraising efforts to help fight this disease and for three years have worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds.

To date, nearly $200,000 has been raised and presented to Huntington Medical Research Institutes, known for their ground-breaking work in the field of cancer research. advertisement

HMRI Hosts Successful Liver Symposium, La Cañadan Lt. Andrew Torres Honored

Sixty physicians gathered at the Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI) recently for an update on liver diseases, including liver cancer and its rising incidence rates and to hear distinguished guest speaker Dr. Willis Maddrey, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he also serves as vice president for clinical affairs, discuss the growing problem of Hepatitis C and liver cancer. Maddrey expressed optimism about research underway on new technology to evaluate liver fibrosis without liver biopsy, explaining that fibrosis, or scarring, usually precedes cancer and is a critical observation for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Honored during the symposium was the late 2nd Lieutenant Andrew Torres (USMC), son of Leonard Torres and Anita Brenner of La Cañada, who passed away in 2004 of liver cancer at age 23. HMRI has been the recipient of funds raised by the Andrew Torres Memorial Golf Tournament over the past two years. Dr. William Corey, director of clinical research at the HMRI Liver Center, was the symposium moderator.

HMRI Executive Director Dr. Bill Opel said, "With the increasing incidence of liver cancer and the improving ways of treating people early, HMRI research is focused on developing new ways of detecting the cancer early."

Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) is the fifth most common cancer in the world and the third leading cause of cancer deaths. Over 500,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. Its incidence has nearly tripled in the United States since 1980 and is increasing in all ethnic groups, including white, Hispanic, black and Asian.

Dr. Myron Tong, director of the HMRI Liver Center, who was one of many investigators who came to realize that the association of Hepatitis B and C is a risk factor for hepatocelluar cancer, provided an update on treatment of Hepatitis B at the symposium.

Dr. Tong also discussed effective new treatments for liver cancer.

When caught early, small tumors can be destroyed with injections or with radio energy delivered through slender probes. Some patients can also be treated effectively with liver transplants.

"The liver center has been in Pasadena for about 30 years and has always been led by Dr Myron Tong who is both nationally and internationally known as a for his involvement in studies, particularly with hepatitis B and C," said Dr. Corey. "He has continued to be interested in the treatment and has ongoing drug trials."

Dr. Edward Mena, whose medical practice and research are based at the HMRI Liver Center on South Fair Oaks in Pasadena, discussed the growing problem of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease at the symposium.

"Dr. Mena's focus on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is very compelling, because obesity can cause serious liver damage and even cancer in susceptible people," Opel explained.

Of the symposium, Dr. Corey said, "I thought it went beautifully."

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE - The First Annual 2nd Lt. Andrew Torres Golf Classic was held on Monday April 18th at the La Ca�ada Flintridge Country Club. Andrew Torres was a young Marine, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, who died from liver cancer in 2004 at the age of 23. The event was organized by classmates and family of Lt. Torres.

Two hundred and seventy guests joined the committee for an awards dinner following the golf tournament, including many classmates of Lt. Torres, parents and friends from Flintridge Preparatory School, members of the UCLA Law School Class of 1973 and ladies from the La Ca�ada Thursday Club.

Ito, Linder and Chandler offered toasts to the United States Marine Corps, to Lt. Torres and to a cure for cancer.

William Opel, PhD, the executive director of Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI), told the audience about the Torres memorial research project, a search for a biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma. He also explained that HMRI is an independent, nonprofit, public-benefit organization dedicated to improving health and prolonging life by enhancing knowledge of life processes and disease, and by developing technology to diagnose and treat diseases.

When Andrew Torres died of cancer last April at the age of 23, he left behind friends from every walk of life. Now his classmates, all young adults in their early 20s, have asked their parents, relatives and employers to support the first annual 2nd Lt. Andrew Torres Memorial Golf Classic, to be held on April 18 at the La Ca�ada Flintridge Country Club.

First Annual 2nd Lt. Andrew J. Torres Memorial Golf Classic

Set in the foothills of the picturesque San Gabriel Mountains, the first annual golf tournament will be hosted at the La Canada Flintridge Country Club.

The tournament committee has set a goal to raise $100,000 to fund the research of the Huntington Medical Research Institutes
