When infinite information is available 24 hours a day at the click of a button, it can become difficult to distinguish between waking life and dream life. Virtual identities supersede their real-world counterparts as images both horrific and idyllic are browsed casually. Scenes that once seemed possible only in nightmares are captured and sold as reality, and sleeping states become repositories for the mundane details of increasingly surreal routines. It is in this blurred cycle of waking and dreaming that Roommate’s We Were Enchanted finds its foundation.

Much like a dream, the album does not follow a purely linear structure; instead, it is formed from a series of startling images, both gorgeous and grotesque, from which a series of themes emerges: The escapism and anonymity of digital life; the endless, vacuous cycle of modern news; the struggle to connect meaningfully with the earth and other humans in a wasteful and destructive society; the seductive appeal of fantasy and nostalgia in a landscape defined by American Idolatry and Wars of Terror. Avoiding easy cynicism, Roommate examines these and other themes with earnest idealism and self-observant irony, finding hope, beauty and humor where little seems possible.
The production of We Were Enchanted began in the spring of 2006, just before the release of Roommate’s critically acclaimed debut album Songs the Animals Taught Us. This period saw Roommate complete its transition from the solo project of Chicagoan Kent Lambert to a cohesive and versatile live band and recording ensemble. Preliminary tracks were recorded in Lambert’s bedroom studio, but it didn’t take long for the album to become a wholly collaborative project. All manner of experiments were conducted, from the recording of a choir of canjos (instruments made by Southside Chicago high school students from coffee cans and plywood) for the album’s opening to the use of turpentine cans, empty kegs and beat-up hubcaps as percussion. Old friends and new acquaintances were invited to contribute horn parts and guitar solos or join in on chorus vocals. By the time of the album’s completion in October 2007, the band had worked in seven different recording environments with over twenty musicians, including some of Chicago’s most celebrated free jazz players as well as former and current members of such bands as Califone, Till By Turning, Imaginary Folk, Fruit Bats, and Mucca Pazza.

Dramatically shifting and evolving over the course of the album, the sounds of Lambert and his cast of backing musicians strike a deft balance between organic and electronic, dissonant and harmonious, all the while capturing the elusive, abstract emotions of the lyrics. It is not a sound easily described with a laundry list of influences. While there are moments here and there that may spark a memory of 60s & 70s psychedelic rock or 80s synth-pop, a hint of Nilsson-esque bar-room piano, Faust-ian analog synths or delicate strings ala Talk Talk, this is music with eyes gazing into the future, seeking out new ways of expressing a poetic, ecstatic truth.

We Were Enchanted is an album that moves beyond casual listening and begs participation. This is a work so utterly of its time, and so reflective, that it is impossible not to engage it; these characters aren’t just people we know or archetypes we can relate to, they are us. In its execution, the album opens a new dialogue, something few works of art can do. In a world full of easy answers to impossible questions, there is no greater rebellion than an honest conversation.

FRACTURED is their sixth LP, a spicy amalgam of 3 LANGUIS singles in fifteen songs

Inspirations range from Star Trek, the waft of sag aloo, a dash of pretension, sex, eight years of righteous rule and the odd nod to twenty years ago.

In their ten years of existence, LANGUIS have released a whole bag of brill records, studied levitation, sampled humous kebab in almost every U.S. city, done some radio sessions, had a van and all their equipment ripped off, while recording extra tracks for all sorts of groovy compilations and flexis.

Their music has def beats, raw power, mysterious melodies, eastern scales, vocal harmonies, the occasional mental reverb, not to mention ripping guitar. LANGUIS are the happening sound of skinhead acid rock.

LANGUIS are a band that immediately bring back the happenings of 20 years past as well as what is going on today. The foursome formed in the aurora borealic regions of Los Angeles, California in 1997. They initially signed with Simballrec for the release of their first EP, "Homesick"

The past 18 months have seen a dramatic rise in the international profile of LANGUIS. They successfully toured the U.S., all while releasing a new single every four months and appearing on a stream of sampler records.

Now North American infiltration is at hand with FRACTURED, 15 mescal flavored tracks including the first three singles, some b sides and extra tracks all demonstrating the LANGUIS sound, a carefully measured brew, cultivated in the mushroom and poppy fields outside Los Angeles.

Roommate Chicago Show!

For those of you in the Chicago area, Roommate will be playing their release show for We Were Enchanted (their first show in 3 months!) on Saturday night (April 19) at the Empty Bottle , 1035 N. Western Ave., at 10 PM. The cover is $8. CDs & vinyl LPs of the album will be available at the show.

Battlecats (Toby Summerfield plus Roommate collaborators Anton Hatwich & Jaimie Branch) will open the show and Roommate's good friends the The Judy Green (starring Roommate bassist Gillian Lisée) will play second. Our set will start sometime around midnight and will feature selections from the new album, an even newer song inspired by letters to and from Tamms C-MAX prison (more on Tamms at http://yearten.org ), some old chestnuts from the Roommate catalog, and guest performances by a few of the people responsible for some of the record's most magical moments.

Plug Research artist, Ola Podrida will be opening up for Merge recording artist and indie darlings, SHE & HIM @ The Hiro Ballroom in New York on April 22. However, unless you already have tickets for the SHE & HIM show, you're out of luck (it's sold-out)!!! There are still tickets available for their show on May 3rd @ Union Hall in Brooklyn with The Acorn. After that, the guy's head off to Europe for some dates including a May 16th appearance @ All Tomorrow's Parties show in Minehead, UK.

Roy Edward Ayers, Jr. was born in Los Angeles, CA on September 10, 1940. The 1970's found Roy embarking upon a long and fruitful relationship with Polydor Records, where Roy, committed to the search for and exploration of new musical concepts began to incorporate "wah wah" and "fuzz" tones on his vibes. It was during this period he formed the group Ubiquity. The term Ubiquity (from the Latin) means the state or capacity of being, or seeming to be, everywhere at the same time. Roy Ayers obviously took his group's name to heart for the Roy Ayers sound was virtually omnipresent. As musical genres changed in scope and definition, rhythm and blues, jazz, rock n' roll, pop and disco each fought for a niche with the public and the major record labels. Meanwhile, a new sound was slowly emerging…the American audiences referred to it as fusion, the British called it jazz-funk. Regardless of its moniker, Roy Ayers became the undisputed champion of a sound that seemed to draw from his jazz, rhythm and blues, Latin, funk and dance music roots. For the next ten years, Roy Ayers produced what many regard as some of his finest works. The mere mention of certain song titles…"Virgo Red", "Change Up the Groove", "Mystic Voyage", "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", "Vibrations", "You Send Me", "Lifeline", "Fever", and the list goes on and on, evoke fond memories for fans ranging in age from their twenties through their seventies. It is rare when an artist is able to speak to, grasp and hold the attention of so wide a demographic, for so long a period of time.

Born in Nigeria in 1940 of mixed Nigerian and Ghanaian parentage, Tony Allen is perhaps the most highly-regarded African drum set player to emerge since World War II. Drummers and other musicians of all backgrounds marvel at his uniquely polyrhythmic style. Tony came to international prominence in the 1960s as a member of the band of the late Nigerian bandleader Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, with whom he played for 15 years. Fela Kuti is himself recognized as one of the most important and influential African popular musicians/composers of the post-colonial era, and it is widely accepted that Tony Allen was his crucial collaborator in the synthesis of jazz, funk and highlife which resulted in the style known as Afrobeat. Tony Allen's work with Fela is documented on over 30 recordings and today, he remains the primary exponent of Afrobeat.

The Funky President of the Beat Junkie Crew. For well over ten years, this man has established himself as one of the illest DJs around, with his signature blends and supreme selection. A steady globe-trotter, J has travelled extensively and showcased his solid knowledge of music with the very best talents, including the late great J Dilla (RIP). His deep catalog of mix tapes and cds are considered classic, from "Syndromes" to "Taster's Choice." J is well-versed in a wide array of sounds, and always gets down something serious when behind the decks.
