The route passes through five counties (Oxfordshire,Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire), walkingon a mixture of footpaths and quiet country roads. Cambridge have done theMarch every year since 1998 (except for a break in 2001), but this is the firstyear Oxford is joining in. So far all marches have been completedsuccessfully, although not all participants have walked the full distance. This year the Varsity March is on the weekend of 21-22 June. Thecurrent *provisional* plan is to set off from St Mary's Church Oxfordat around 10.15am on Saturday morning and (hopefully!) get to Cambridge Sundayevening, hopefully in time to get the last bus back! We will aim to stop for atleast one pub meal on the way, with other stops to eat food brought from home.If you are interested in joining us for all or part of the route, or wouldlike more information, please email Mel (melissa.chng@ccc.ox.ac.uk).
We also have a facebook group that you can join: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=19819812052Please note that the Varsity March is very mentally and physicallydemanding and is not something to be undertaken too lightly! You willneed a reasonable level of fitness if you plan to walk all or asubstantial part of the route. It is quite possible to join us for only part of the distance (there areseveral points at which you can join or leave the route by publictransport). However, this needs careful planning in advance:unplanned dropping out of the walk can be very inconvenient and/orexpensive. Once again, please get in touch with Mel to discuss possibleoptions.Notwithstanding all of the above, the Varsity March can be a veryfulfilling and rewarding experience if you manage to complete it, andsurely you have to do at least one crazy thing as a student!FundraisingThe Varsity March will also be used as an opportunity to fundraise for a
charity that I'm working with this summer. SEALNet
(Southeast Asian Nations Leadership Network) Project Philippines 2008
is a 2-week project in Cebu City, the Philippines, which aims to educate
the Filipino community about gastrointestinal worms. Our goal is to raise
US$1500 by 30th June 2008. To that end, I have promised to walk the
entire Varsity March in my ball dress if I am able to raise 80 pounds
before the walk begins. The film is told from the viewpoint of a boy named Rocket (Busca pé in Portuguese) who grows up there as a fishmonger's son, and demonstrates the desperation and violence inherent in the slums. Based on a real story, the movie depicts drug abuse, violent crime, and a boy's struggle to free himself from the slums' grasp. Most of the actors were in fact genuine residents of Rio's favelas.

Suggested donation £3; all proceeds to the two participating charities. Drinks will be available.

Take a break from revision for a great cause, and see a fantastic movie whilst you're at it. Gradventures offers skiing, snowboarding, rafting, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, climbing, kayaking, etc ONLY FOR GRADUATES.
Added to the extreme sports we also arrange for the UK's leading Graduate Recruitment Agency to work on our graduates/adventurers behalf whilst they are travelling to fix up interviews and appointments to help launch their career when they return.
_I am looking for reps to represent Gradventures at Oxford with pay_.
I am looking to meet and appoint 2-3 individual Gradventure reps within the elite and exclusive universities included in the programme to introduce the Great Grad Experience to friends and colleagues who are looking to plan ahead and travel this year after their finals. At all the other universities/colleges we have approached thus far we have appointed an individual within the Ski Club, another within the Snowboard Club and generally one from either the Soccer/Rugby Club or from the extreme sports clubs ranks. We are incentivizing these individuals to introduce and recruit their friends and colleagues to our programmes, - and to help them we will supply them with posters, leaflets and brochures and get them to point people in the direction of our website and our FACEBOOK contact group. For those 2-3 individuals appointed they in turn are rewarded with #100/$200 per contact who sign up for any of our Gradventure programmes.
Furthermore, we are actually interested to hear from anyone who might also be interested in the possibility of working for Gradventures in Colorado as a Programme and Social manager - actually making sure the activity programmes run smoothly in the resort.
This is a totally unique concept and opportunity and one in which we'd love to have you on board.
If you would like to discuss this invitation or any other aspects of the company please contact me at your earliest convenience either by email or on
0044191 3863578 from abroad to discuss matters.
Please, send us another email address other than your University/College one in the next week or so, otherwise we will have no means of contacting you after the end of the term. Or alternatively please drop me a line to either recommend someone else within your University/College ranks who might suit the challenge and work with us on this exciting new proposal. We are looking for liaison reps who are genuinely going to be proactive and sell this concept to their fellow graduates. Enquiries may be directed to raheel.dhattiwala@st-hildas.ox.ac.uk

SPEAKER PROFILE :
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown came to Britain in 1972 from Uganda. She completed her M.Phil. in literature at Oxford in 1975. She is a journalist, radio and television broadcaster and author of several books. She is now a regular columnist on The Independent and London’s Evening Standard, and a Vice President of the United Nations Association, UK.
Her writings always mix the intensely personal with the political. Her views are unpredictable except on a few issues where she has remained steadfast – immigration most of all. She can be depended on to be disloyal to blind interest groups and patriotism. She is a feminist who furiously criticises some forms of feminism, an anti-racist who will always expose black and Asian hypocrisies and oppression, a Muslim calling for reformation, a British citizen who battles for real equality for immigrants and their children. On the 10th of September, 2001, the day before the Al-Queda attacks in the US, she wrote a column calling for international action against the Taliban. The day after she criticised the US for its hubris. Why does she irritate so much? is the refrain. The list of people who have previously been offended by her words include Prince Charles, Cherie Blair, Bruce Anderson, Melanie Phillips Boris Johnson, Rod Liddle, David Blunkett and his erstwhile lover Kimberley Quinn, Keith Vaz, The Board of Jewish Deputies ( she believes Israel gives Jewish people a sense of place and security but she is a passionate defender of Palestinian rights) The Muslim Council of Britain, Ken Livingstone, Dianne Abbot, the National Black Alliance and many others. Then there are the mullahs and Muslim apologists who want to go further and kill her.
In 2000 she published, Who Do We Think We Are? which went on to be published in the US too, an acclaimed book on the state of the nation. After Multiculturalism, a pamphlet re-assessing the multicultural ideology in Britain was the first critical examination by a social democrat of a settled and now damaging orthodoxy. In 2001 came the publication of Mixed Feelings, a book on mixed race Britons which has been praised by all those who have reviewed it to date.
On April 25, she brought her acclaimed play, Nowhere to Belong; Tales of an Extravagant Stranger, to Oxford. She will return again this month on May 28 to speak at St Hilda’s College on Race and the Media.
*****************************

Marlenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05951607407016969649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1113440691304441333.post-13373960312476540492008-05-25T16:23:00.001+01:002008-05-25T16:23:51.809+01:00HANDY UP FOR DARFUR IS RECRUITINGHands Up for Darfur is NOW RECRUITING! They constantly behave self-centeredly throughout the weekend, inflicting melodramatic and comedic scenes upon their unsuspecting guests, from the awkward first tea to the after-dinner game which none of the guests understands. This play propelled Coward to prominence as a playwright, thanks to its witty and indisputably entertaining nature.
To reserve tickets, send an e-mail to trinitylawnsplay@hotmail.co.uk and pidge money (cash/cheque made out to 'Trinity Players') for the tickets to Simone Caplin at Trinity College within 48 hours. We want to find out more about your experience at Oxford, what you are finding positive and what you feel could benefit from improvement. The Focus groups will allow informal discussion of the issues. The Focus groups will feed into a report we are currently preparing into the issues facing students in Oxford. All contributions will be kept anonymous. The report will form part of OUSU's submission to an external Audit of the University, a regular inspection which takes place in all UK University's. This is a very useful process for the University to reflect on its progress in areas of equality and diversity and students thoughts, experiences and concerns are a valuable part of this process. If you will be attending any of the focus groups, please contact women@ousu.org to let us know. Please put the name of the group in the title of the e-mail.
