The entire world, and not just Madoff is guilty.

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-52563425441719175132009-01-10T08:33:00.004-05:002009-01-10T08:49:19.628-05:00Satyam's SOS ....I am sure you know everything that there is to know about the Satyam fiasco.

I was thinking about this earlier today and I think the following folks can't pull Satyam out of this abyss and execute a turn-around:

Not Ram Mynampati (no pedigree), Azim Premji nor Narayanamurthy (not enough energy).

There is one person who would be perfect: Vivek Paul.

ex-Vice Chairman, Wipro
Currently, Partner, Texas Pacific Group (Private Equity)

This is one move that would solve almost every issue:

Strong leadership - Paul's experience at GE Medical Systems and Wipro (where he was the principle driver in their growth from 250 MM to 1 Billion)

Energy/Focus - Paul is said to be able to do in 8 hours what Ashok Soota and other ex-colleagues at Wipro took 20 hours to do

Access to funds - Texas Pacific Group (his current employer) has the deep pockets to provide liquidity

Pedigree - This would provide a great level of confidence amongst Satyam clients

His ambitions - It is said that he left Wipro because Premji brought his son onboard and this would prevent him from being a true CEO. This would be a great way for him to become CEO of a business that he knows in and out

GE - One of Satyam's biggest clients is GE and Paul's ex-boss at GE Medical, Jeff Immelt is now GE's CEO - This should help in retaining and even growing the GE relationship

There are probably many other reasons why this makes sense. The Lok Sabha elections had just finished and it looked like the Congress had formed a stable government that could last a full term - I knew then that it was the fucking communists that would ruin things.

Their hunger for power is similar to the sexual excesses of spiritual gurus who "shun material pleasures". Anyone who claims to be "holier than thou" and abstains from "immoral" activities is most likely to be the one indulging in it. Look at the Catholic church, Republican senators and Indian spiritual leaders.

How hungry are the communists for power that they would topple a government, with the help of Mayawati no less!

Fucking cretins. Can they not just stay content with their stupid hartals supporting Saddam Hussein (of all people!). Kerala and West Bengal are the poster boys of lost opportunities - A literate, urbane workforce denied opportunities repeatedly - Opportunities that have instead gone to their neighbours.

Give me an openly immoral government any day - Anything is better than these big fat humbug communists - Sleeping on the floor and determined to ensure that the entire country will sleep on the floor forever. Progress is not something to be ashamed off and sadomasochistic self-denial and aversion to growth is nothing to be proud off.

If only we could hand over West Bengal and Kerala to the Chinese. Some nice 12 hour workdays would break the balls of these theoretical nut cases.

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-19566429567787977502008-02-25T20:30:00.002-05:002008-02-25T20:37:42.501-05:00Everyone gets what they deserve ....Have you heard of the old adage, "People get the government that they deserve" - So true! I really do think that the average Indian/Italian/Mexican is much more prone to blatant bribery than an equivalent person in another country, and thereby end up with politicians who openly demand and obtain bribes.

As an extension to this, I would like to suggest that "Drivers get the road they deserve". People crib all the time about the poor roads in India. Maybe it is just god's way of protecting people from poor drivers, by artificially limiting the maximum speed. Can you imagine what would happen if pristine roads suddenly appeared in the middle of Chennai and our lorry drivers and 16 year old spolit brats were released onto them? I can imagine the bloodbath that would lead to ....

So be careful what you wish for .... I am not sure what is worse - An uncomfortable, bone rattling drive from Chennai to Madurai at 60 kmph or being passed by a drunk lorry driver at 180 kmph .....

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-22008706809056299512008-02-12T20:33:00.000-05:002008-02-12T20:35:05.135-05:00A Burka for Sania Mirza?.... from my guest columnist, Minu.

I am watching the reactions to Sania Mirza refusing to play in the Bangalore Open. On one hand, I think she should play in the Bangalore event, since it is on home ground and it could help her gain important points, which can see her move up in WTA ranking. Sania does not want to play as she is afraid that there will be more controversy.

I think the media should concentrate more on the game than on her clothes and her apparent disrespect to the national flag. We see burka clad women take to the streets asking sania to stop playing for the country. The reason? Her clothes do not conform to Muslim standards. How many of these women are athletes or representing India in any kind of sport?

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-36818030354560919822007-12-28T21:01:00.000-05:002007-12-28T21:02:57.086-05:00Bhutto. For a very long time, I have thought that Pakistan is the most dangerous place in the world (along with Russia)

This thought was just by a simple line extension - Any country whose government the US Government supports (in the hope that the issue just slinks away) tends to become a trouble center. Iran (Shah of Iran), Afghanistan (the US supported the Taliban against the Russians - featured in the movie "Charlie Wilson's War"), Iraq (who do you think armed Saddam in his far against the Kurds?), Cuba and a variety of other banana republics.

Benazir Bhutto was incredibly flawed, but her assasination clearly shows the double game that Musharaff has been playing - Pandering to the US, pandering to the Mullahs. However, his time is limited. Pakistan is soon going to go the way of Palestine, with a democratically elected extremist government.

And what does George Bush do?

Looks Putin in the eye and declares that he is a "good guy".

Gives Pakistan $10 Billion to fight against the Taliban - USA, please understand that unless you fight against the enemy yourself, there is no point - No more proxy wars please. Prediction: Hamid Karzai's Northern Alliance is going to be the terrorists of 10 years later

Puts a 25 Million dollar bounty on Osama's head - Are you kidding me! Is the US Intelligence so dumb that they would believe that someone would give away Osama's location for money - They would be dead in a few days

The root problem is that the US apparently does not have access to enough people who can think like Middle Easterners/Asians. Unless the US stops interacting with them expecting that they will want the same thing as Americans, the same problems are going to exist - Forever.

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-80824653815982404712007-11-20T11:37:00.000-05:002007-11-20T11:54:00.248-05:00MTV Arabia ...These idiotic talking heads on US media drive me nuts. At the airport today (enroute to Puerto Rico with the missus!), there was a 30 minute program on which "terrorism analysts" were talking with unbelievable energy about how MTV Arabia was going to convert the would be terrorists into yet another legion in the I love the US bandwagon ...

What utter rot!

The only folks watching MTV Arabia in the Middle East are the ones who are already liberal to the extent that they would never consider blowing themselves up for the sake of religion. Both albums, mediocre though they were, sold much more than they normally would have. Kanye's album had the top sales/week ever.

And more money was pulled from minimum wage earners who could really have spent the 2 X 17.99$ on things like medical care .....

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-273828235437731712007-09-18T15:28:00.000-04:002007-11-20T11:56:12.877-05:00Airport Indiscretions ....... No, this is not a post about the esteemed Senator from Idaho, Larry Craig!

I am constantly amazed by the conversations that I overhear at airport lounges - People seem to be carried away by the aura of anonymity that airports in specific and travel in general provides and often reveal what I would consider extremely confidential information while speaking on the phone.

I have heard salespeople talking about margins they are making off specific clients, I have heard executives discussing the case of a colleague who they believed was sexually harassing a subordinate and any number of other sensitive information.

What if your competition was sitting in the next lounger in the airport?

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-12493097507071549572007-09-15T20:53:00.000-04:002007-09-15T21:05:02.336-04:00Overcooked Apple Pie?!I think Apple's Marketing/Product Development team has lost it. Completely.

Take the iPhone for example - I saw it the day it was launched, and although it had a lot of "cool" stuff, I realized that functionality-wise it was at the same level as an Apple laptop - Very slick interface, very well designed widgets - But lacking is actual utility.

Making a simple phone call was difficult - And typing on that god-awful touch screen key pad - Dreadul! .... And then and there I thanked the good Lord for the Blackberries in my life !!

In my mind, the iPhone would only do well soon after its launch, because the buzz surrounding it would ensure that the million or so folks that live on technology's cutting edge would each buy it.

After that threshold, I predicted that sales would drop off - Once the novelty factor was lost, it would lose most of its appeal. And that is exactly what happened.

And then Apple jumped and cut their prices by $200! What a bad move ... the iPhone was now likely to cannibalize iPod sales.

And then Apple re-designs the iPod to look almost exactly like the iPhone. Geez, three strikes and you are OUT. The thing that is going to sustain Apple is their computers.

Disclosure: I have owned five Blackberries so far and they are the best email device by a HUGE margin.

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-23241305989392914752007-09-07T17:32:00.000-04:002007-09-19T15:13:23.950-04:00Pet PeeveI absolutely detest bluetooth headsets. I do not understand the logic of using them in airports where you have both your hands free. These headsets don't even work, so the users have to scream every word and the rest of the folks are made unwilling participants to someone's domestic arguments or corporate bull shit.

I hate them, with their annoying flashing light (UFO-like) and for making their users seem like crazy people talking to themselves ....

And one more thing - I think bluetooth users feel obligated to make calls even when they don't really have a reason to make one. Of course, if I wore a piece of plastic on my ear the whole day, I would probably do the same ....

No bluetooth in airports! That's a one point manifesto I could get behind.

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-44516224869928248622007-08-31T21:43:00.000-04:002007-08-31T21:44:44.404-04:00A Simple Lifestyle.I truly enjoy my simple lifestyle, free from frills. History is full of colonizers invading countries and attempting to impart their "culture"/"education"/"religion" or "values". And invariably, the invading nation has the fairer skin (with a few exceptions).

The treatment of blacks/native Americans in the US in the past, Hitler's obsession with white skins/blue eyes are other examples of this obsession.

Black skin is assumed to denote an inferior person ... For example, our Hindu caste system although supposedly based on occupation (warrior, trader etc) is really based on color - Kshatriya, Brahmin etc are all "varnas" - which means "color" in sanskrit. Essentially, our dumb caste system was based on skin color.

And I guess subconsciously, the desire to get married to fair people/get fair daughter's in law etc is really a subsconscious attempt to elevate one's social status. The fairer the family, the higher the social standing. Skin color as a proxy for achievement :-)

Even amongst the Nadars, I guess there is discrimination against the darker skinned people from the deep-South districts (Nagercoil, Tirunelveli etc) and the first generation rich from the deep south attempt to whitewash their modest past by acquiring the fairest daughters in law.

It's sad but true. And of course, movies are only a mirror on society - So, there is no point blaming Sivaji, the movie - It is us all that allows the perpetuation of the color based disrimination and humor. And in any case, there is no kind of humor that is uniformly kind to every type of person.

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-56348473718388835412007-08-22T16:21:00.000-04:002007-08-22T16:36:17.536-04:00Flights in the USFlights in the US are supposed to the most bare-boned of them all - Service on most flights is just a little bit above Air Deccan levels - With a tiny bag of pretzels and a few drops of soda being the pretty much the summary of inflight service.

Apparently, things were a lot better before 9/11, but I am unable to comment on that as my flight in the US was in 2002.

Recently, I was on an American Airlines flight where a passenger asked for a pillow. He was told that pillows were not free anymore - He could "buy" the pillow if he wanted and take it home!

I am waiting for the day when you have to buy your own seatbelt ... Or worse still, imagine the pilot making this announcement - "This is an emergency, there is low pressure in the cabin, please swipe your credit card for oxygen!"

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-18382599197179003202007-08-11T21:03:00.000-04:002007-08-11T23:20:40.695-04:00How environment friendly are you?In the last few months, the environment has come to the forefront of discussions in the US and there is a huge push to become more environment-friendly through the use of better bulbs or cleaner sources of energy.

The culmination of this campaign (led by former Vice President Al Gore) was in simultaneous concerts held around the world to highlight the problem of global warming. Stars from Hollywood and the music industry joined hands in creating star-studded concerts that probably consumed more energy than a chemical plant does in a month.

My take on this entire situation: Global warming is a definite threat, but if the Hollywood nutjobs are allowed to define the solutions, you are going to end up with stupid, superficial solutions - Which is what is happening today.

Lets take a look at the solutions being recommended:

energy efficient bulbs (that cost 10 times the usual)

hybrid/flex-fuel cars

pay extra on your electricity bill to ensure that the sources of your energy are "clean"

A few points:

Anytime you have to pay more for a service or product, you are automically consuming more resources to create the ability to pay for it.

For example, if you pay $1 for a regular bulb and in order to earn that $1, you and your affiliates (employer, spouse, suppliers, customers) used 1 unit of electricity (which is 85% dirty - from gas/oil/coal), you would consequently use 10 units of electricity to buy 1 $10 bulb.

Of course the bulb consumes less energy, but the energy needed to create the ability to purchase that bulb is higher (Unless a substantial portion of the country is already green).

Similarly, there is a feeling that if you drive a hybrid SUV, you are doing good things for the environment. I am going to call bull shit on this. Yes, it costs less to run the car, but what about the amount of energy to create/buy the car. If a small car weighs 750 kgs and an SUV weighs 1,500 kgs, you have consumed 750 kgs of extra steel/plastics which uses a huge amount of energy to produce.

And the worst fallacy is that if you pay a few dollars extra on your electricity bill, you have contributed to the environment. Rubbish! Certainly this might ensure that the source of your energy is clean (wind/wave/hydel/solar), but if that costs more, then by definition, your carbon foot-print is greater.

Wind, solar energy and other forms of "clean" energy are not clean in my mind, unless they are cheaper than other forms of energy. If you are spending more to use wind energy, then automatically the benefit of using wind is nullified (Bear in mind that the government is paying a lot more to provide you with wind energy through subsidies and tax rebates)

So, all of these easy ways to reduce pollution - energy efficient bulbs, alternate energy and hybrid cars are so seductively simple that they are dangerous - These are solutions that really dont help and make every huge home-owning, 10 car owning, private jet flying Hollywood star feel like they are the saviour of the environment.

So, what is my solution? It really needs an analysis of the true sources of large-scale energy consumption.

Set up an index to measure the energy consumption for each large company, which they should publish on their products. This should be in energy used/unit of product. Use products that have a lower consumption of energy

Try and live in a place that does not need a huge amount of heating or cooling. However, in the last few months, as I have built up my company, I have started moving steadily towards the right.

When I was younger, when flying was a novelty, I used to fight for the window seat. Now that I fly an average of 10 flights a week, I prefer the aisle as its easier to get my laptop.

I see some connection between the two paragraphs above. Do you?

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-51977727063520748362007-07-01T16:56:00.001-04:002007-07-01T17:05:03.771-04:00Do away with money!India seems to be caught in the vicious cycle of corruption. Business cannot seem to progress without corrupt officials and that is sustaining the so-called "secondary economy" or in more realistic terms "the evergreen slime-lickers club".

My simple (in concept) solution is: "Get rid of money" - And when I say money, I mean cash of course.

Stop printing currency notes and ask everyone who possesses money in any liquid form (cash, bank deposits, shares etc) to come to a central agency and have it exchanged for electronic credits. Set up a nationwide system that allows transactions that only use these electronic credits.

Complete transparency that eliminates the incentive to hide money. It will no longer be possible for anyone to earn money through illegal means and as black money subsides, the need to bribe politicans would be removed and corruption should die a natural death.

In my mind corruption is sustained only because of black money. If a company (like most IT companies) receives absolutely no payments in cash (Only through checks, wire transfers), there is hardly any unaccounted money. This means two things - No need to hide/blacken money, and politicans know that there is not much money to be made there. Its possible, but difficult for a high-profile IT company to bribe politicians.

Its not money that is root cause of all evil, but cash ....

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-91563847616644048012007-06-15T11:47:00.000-04:002007-06-15T11:49:39.504-04:00SivajiSivaji, the B.O.S.S might not have the Best Original Story & Script, but it rocks! Rajini delivers yet another mega-hit!

Its got everything you could possibly want in a movie, and then some more .... We watched it at 8 PM EST in North Carolina. Must have been amongst the first few people to see the movie in the world.

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-45135959181842908142007-06-10T12:17:00.000-04:002007-06-10T12:34:49.852-04:00A 'Kalam'itous PresidencyOne of the biggest disappointments in the last few years is the utter lack of distinction in Dr. Kalam's term as President. I understand completely that the office of President is that of a figurehead with no real power except the right to veto bills twice each (after which time their opinion matters no more).

Maybe I expected too much, but I certainly believed that a person who couldbuild a world class space program even in the midst of an entrenched bureaucracy could certainly succeed in moving the entire nation forward, in a concrete manner, even if it was just a few meters.

However, the only incident that has stuck to my mind at the end of his presidency is his consideration of a mercy plea for the Mumbai Blasts terrorists. Hundreds of school kids visited him every week and he wrote a few more books and articles. However, it would have been magical if he could have adopted a cause and truly brought a great deal of visibility to it, as ex-President Carter has with Africa and First Lady Hillary Clinton did with healthcare.

I thought that Dr. Kalam would not play the role of a "conventional" president, but it seems that I was mistaken.

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-63406338527805709452007-05-13T11:06:00.000-04:002007-05-13T11:15:11.742-04:00Virginia TechThe recent massacre by a deranged student at Virginia Tech, has amazingly succeeded in further polarizing the United States - amazingly I saw because this should have been one incident that pulled people together across party lines, across spheres of belief.

However, as always the gun lobby has come out with their guns blazing claiming that this incident established the clear need for more guns, rather than less - Using the convoluted logic that if any of the murdered students had been armed, this tragedy could have been averted or atleast minimized.

And the gun control advocates viewed this as an "open and shut case" in favour of more stringent gun control. Surely it was important to have some sort of psychiatric evaluation of the buyer before handing over automatic weapons.

It is intensely scary to me that an AK-47 can be purchased online for $300 (Rs. 12,000) in the US with just three forms of ID (Which I possess). There are 70 million guns in the US.

A Britisher writing to Time magazine captured my feeling perfectly:

"While the world can sympathize with the bereaved in the Virginia Tech killings, there seems little point in the American people getting too upset about them. Such killings are merely a form of blood tax that has to be paid for the imagined privilege of owning guns"

'Nuff said

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-69964152518530399122007-03-28T07:42:00.000-04:002007-03-28T07:50:08.309-04:00KivaAs I listened to the three leaked songs from the much-anticipated Rajini movie "Sivaji", I saw a banner advertisement for an organization called Kiva.

Kiva is an organization that enables people from around the world to lend money to potential entrepreneurs in under-developed countries. What a great idea! A reporter is spending a week each in the major rice growing regions to understand how rice influences the economy, culture and eating habits of the region. He was in China yesterday and I heard the most remarkable statistic.

To grow one kilogram of rice, you need 5,000 litres of water. This is the single most astounding statistic I have ever heard. 5,000 litres !

The entire Cauvery dispute, farmer suicides and celebration of rain .... All make sense to me.

I can just imagine the water gushing down the Kutrallam falls as I sit here in the Memphis airport. That is god right there, the true sustainer of life, water. How can stone be more sacred than water?

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-49096808059664707052007-02-28T08:49:00.000-05:002007-02-28T09:00:04.671-05:00Instant TranslatorBabel
Thats the word I think of, as I visualize a situation where there is a group of people from every part of the world, speaking in different languages at the same time.

The internet and other technological advances has brought us closer, but I believe that the real barrier (and the barrier all along) is still language. Culture-wise, we are all a lot closer today than we were a 1,000 years ago. The Norwegians identify with Indian culture, Indians admire Japanese culture and the Japanese ape the Americans.

But how close can two people (or groups, or countries) ever get if they speak different languages.

One innovation that I see coming down the line, to solve this problem is "Instant Translation"

Imagine a situation where you are having a telephone conversation with a person from Japan. Would it not be cool if as you spoke in English, this was instantly translated to Japanese, such that the Japanese person heard a stream of Japanese words? Seamless communication.

I can imagine how you would set your "preferred language" on your phone and incoming calls from phones with a different "preferred language" from yours would be translated automatically.

And a similar function on email as well - Where your emails would automatically be translated as they enter another person's mailbox.

That is what I would call globalization.

Ideamanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17868678847920324891noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11102676.post-11936112489511123212007-02-24T10:43:00.000-05:002007-02-24T10:51:11.145-05:00A home of one's ownMy wife and I have just finished going through the gruelling process of buying a new home.
