The Big Picnic on Butterfield Green - 'what a tease the weather was'

As a result of the recent weather and the forecast, it was decided that the picnic could not take place as intended on Sunday 7th June.

However, although the event was officially postponed, an impromptu gathering went ahead as the sun came out and a number of the musicians performed during the afternoon, including Grupo Ase (Cuban rhythms); Bow and Bellows (including lovely singing); and Kate Shortt (classical and jazz cellist, and comedienne).

With special thanks to Bron for organising the entertainment, and to Paul for organising the event.

Yes, we know!!!

We have been on to the relevant parties: the design team who actually commissioned the work on the stream - Rattlin' Boag; the clients - The Learning Trust and the Hackney Parks team responsible for maintenance. So far, communication is happening and a site investigation from the installation people is planned for this week.

The Big Picnic will go ahead with or without a running stream. So hope to see you then.

Butterflies and Bees in Albion Grove

The planting bed in Albion Grove was completed on Saturday 30th May - it now forms a beautiful, sustainable oasis for beneficial insects and our delight. With thanks to:

Butterfield Green Meetings

There have been two Butterfield Green meetings in May with the park manager Michael Dixon and with the new park development oficer Eleanor Johnson. We heard from MD that staffing on Butterfield Green has again been reduced - and the supervisor is away on maternity leave, with no cover. We said how disappointed we are with the level of maintenance on the Green, while appreciating that the staff are doing their best. We hope to take this further.

Eleanor Johnson is in a post with responsibility for liaison with Park User Groups. We welcome this new post and look forward to working with her.

The problems with the stream have rather taken up all our energies lately - but we look forward to planning ways of improving both maintenance and future developments on the Butterfield Green.
There is a Hackney Park User Group meeting at 7.00 pm on Thursday 11th June at Hackney Town Hall - everyone is welcome to go along and meet the Head of Parks department, John Wade.

Sign of the Times

Thank you for your comments about the sign for the Butterfield Green 'River'. The Learning Trust agreed to change the sign and to incorporate our logo as an acknowledgement of all the work the local community has put into the Green. It was due to be put up last week - we're waiting.....!

The police, Hackney Council and local councillors will be present at this open public meeting, discussing issues such as anti-social behaviour in and around Milton Gardens Estate and the surrounding local area.

All are welcome to attend and raise their concerns.

Butterfield Green Group Meeting- April

At the last meeting, we agreed to

ask the Learning Trust to alter the sign near BG stream
ask the parks manager about improving maintainance in BG
ask to meet the newly appointed parks development manager
obtain photos of the BURA award for community development that the orchard won in March
have an orchard care day on May 17th

We are meeting the parks manager and the development officer on May 8th - let us know if you would like us to raise anything

Picnic in the Park - Sunday 7th June - from 12:00 noon

This year we will be trying something a bit different!

In place of the fair on Butterfield Green we will be having a giant picnic, with Acoustic Music, some Entertainers and plenty of activities for Children.

More details will be available soon.

Planting Day at Butterfield Green Stream

Scores of sustainable plants - including grasses, irises, euphorbia, bergenia and epimedium - were planted by extremely hard-working neighbours of the Green and many of their children on Saturday 4th April.

Plants needing a warmer and drier spot were placed in the circular bed near Wordsworth Road. These include lavender, sedum and grasses.

The top end of the stream was cleared - revealing another bench from the original early 1980's design, which incorporated urban materials such as granite kerb stones and railway sleepers amongst the naturalistic boulders and hillocks of the stream banks.

A big thank you to all helpers and especially to

Annie Wilson and Lucy Bristow for the planting plan.
Tassy from the design company Rattlin Boag, which is installing the bridge and the water pump as well as refurbishing the stream. She worked with us all day - and provided the delicious cakes and tea.
Hackney Parks for providing the compost and the plants.

The funds for these works were obtained by the Butterfield Green Group - part of the Shakespeare Neighbourhood Residents' Association.

Have you got a great idea that can benefit your community?

£5,000 up for grabs!

Are you a small voluntary or community group, not-for-profit organisation or Tenants and Residents Association with an average income of £20,000 or less over the last three years?

Apply for a Grassroot Grant of up to £5,000 for a range of community projects - this could be an event on your estate, computers to help people learn IT or look for jobs or doing up your community hall or gardens.

Grassroots Grants is available until 2011, with four closing dates a year. The next closing date is Friday, 9 January 2009.

SNRA general meeting: Wednesday, 10 September

The SNRA general meeting is taking place on Wednesday, 10 September. We will be discussing local planning issues and improvements to Butterfield Green.

The meeting takes place from 8:00-9:30pm in the garden of the Shakespeare Pub. Do stay for a drink afterwards.

Also, we are planning a fun new feature after the meeting: the SNRA Gardeners’ Question Time. Bring your gardening problems to an informal session in which local horticultural experts will give advice on allotments, plant diseases, street trees, inspiring community gardening initiatives and much more. If you have a gardening question, please bring it along.
