Today!<span style="font-family:arial;font-size:85%;color:#33ffff;">Posted by Bruce Miller</span><br />Between December 2007 and March 2008, the Boards of Trustees, Phil and I made two big, proactive decisions. We scheduled the elimination of five positions from the staff of Barksdale/Theatre IV, and we announced three Depression Era plays/musicals for our upcoming seasons.<br /><br />It may not have been clear to everyone at the time, but for those of us whose job it was to keep our eyes on the books on a day to day basis, the writing was on the wall. <br /><br />The positions we eliminated amounted to approximately 11% of our total workforce. Like all RIF actions, these eliminations were painful. They continue to strain our operations. <br /><br />The eliminations were also necessary. They reduced annual expenditures by approximately $140,000. <br /><br />The five positions that were eliminated, two by attrition, included Associate Artistic Director, Special Projects Manager, Marketing Associate, Group Sales Manager, and Receptionist/Bookkeeping Associate. If and when the economy rebounds, we hope to be able to restore each of these sorely needed positions.<br /><br />The shows we announced related to the Depression, but they were all upbeat and inspirational, and reflected the current zeitgeist. They were Barksdale’s productions of <em>A Sanders Family Christmas</em> at Hanover Tavern and <em>This Wonderful Life</em> at Willow Lawn, and Theatre IV’s production of <em>Annie</em>, which just opened on Friday at our historic Empire.<br /><br />The public seems to appreciate our decision. These have been three of the four biggest hits of our 2008-09 Seasons (<em>Driving Miss Daisy</em> being the fourth).<br /><br />Susie Haubenstock’s review of <em>Annie </em>appears in this morning’s Metro section. “In tough times,” the headline trumpets, “this musical is just what the doctor ordered.” <br /><br />“Think that <em>Annie </em>is just for kids? The 1977 powerhouse musical by Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin is a favorite of young audiences, surely, but rarely in history has it seemed so appropriate for older ones as well. Theatre IV’s current production is big and stylish and full of fun—and loaded with Depression-era nostalgia that’s all too pertinent today. But being <em>Annie</em>, the attitude is sunny, hopeful and positive—a real tonic for us veterans of bailouts and layoffs.”<br /><br />“The story of those plucky orphans under the yoke of the tippling Miss Hannigan still works like a well-oiled machine. There’s a super-sized cast of 26 people and one irresistible dog, and a sumptuous scenic design by Mercedes Schaum. No skimping here. Robin Arthur’s direction hits just the right note—she’s an ace with the orphans, who are cute but never cloying, and her choreography (especially for ‘Easy Street’) is fresh and funny.”<br /><br />Susie continues to praise the entire cast, the remaining designers, and the production as a whole.<br /><br />So no matter what your age, if you need a lift from the recession-riddled headlines, trundle on down to the historic Empire and participate in Barksdale and Theatre IV’s own stimulus program. You’ll have a GREAT evening in the theatre, laugh and cheer, and help our nonprofit companies triumph, God willing, over this economy that continues to kick us in the shins.<br /><br />We need you. Hope to see you at <em>Annie</em>, <em>Well</em>, <em>I Ought to be in Pictures</em>, and all our other upcoming productions. <br /><br />--Bruce Miller<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1097237314084803017-6702583675558175980?l=theatreiv.blogspot.com'/></div>Bruce Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09210691426665066387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1097237314084803017.post-65649183113486980872009-04-24T14:29:00.008-04:002009-04-24T14:51:29.839-04:00Training a Dog for the Theatre - ANNIE at the Empire<span style="font-weight: bold;">By Valerie Paul</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a1YzOLJzZX4/SfIFcXxNJGI/AAAAAAAAASs/U7VKspSKmCE/s1600-h/2883_1141361179255_1384219929_361323_4277359_n.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a1YzOLJzZX4/SfIFcXxNJGI/AAAAAAAAASs/U7VKspSKmCE/s400/2883_1141361179255_1384219929_361323_4277359_n.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328327294107591778" border="0" /></a>Cody and Sarah Day play Sandy and Annie<br /><br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_a1YzOLJzZX4/SfIHvmOOxdI/AAAAAAAAATE/mDjz7B-puUs/s1600-h/Cody-%2813%29bw-name.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 5px 5px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 160px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_a1YzOLJzZX4/SfIHvmOOxdI/AAAAAAAAATE/mDjz7B-puUs/s200/Cody-%2813%29bw-name.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328329823428199890" border="0" /></a>Needless to say, training Cody for the role of Sandy in <span style="font-style: italic;">Annie</span> was a bit different from training a dog for companionship. Sure, some things were the same. For instance, Cody had the same socialization that every dog should have and at a very young age. Yes, I have to correct Cody just like I would for any other dog. That, however, is about the extent of the similarities.<br /><br />First I mentioned socialization. Cody had to be comfortable with new and exciting things. He had to learn that loud sounds, people, and bright lights were all ok. It really helps that my husband, Hans, is a carpenter. Cody learned that the sound of a saw was where he’d find Daddy, so that noise was ok. That made it easier to introduce new things.<br /><br />Then the training came in. The biggest difference between Cody and companion dogs is that Cody has been trained using only hand signals (no vocal cues). This is both a plus and a minus. Dogs communicate via body language, so it’s easier for Cody to learn this way. However, I am unable to use my voice to reprimand him or get his attention when he’s distracted.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a1YzOLJzZX4/SfIHgERu4MI/AAAAAAAAAS8/4fnGt3euKbo/s1600-h/2883_1141361139254_1384219929_361322_5226186_n.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10pt 0px 10px; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 160px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a1YzOLJzZX4/SfIHgERu4MI/AAAAAAAAAS8/4fnGt3euKbo/s200/2883_1141361139254_1384219929_361322_5226186_n.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328329556618043586" border="0" /></a>After that, we had to allow time for Cody and “Annie” (Sarah Day) to bond. Hans and I had to learn to ignore him while he was in the theatre, and let Sarah give him all the attention. This happened much faster than I expected. That dog loves Sarah. It’s great to watch them together.<br /><br />All in all, it has been a fun experience working with Cody. We’ve had to make some adjustments to certain things due to scenery and lighting cues and whatnot, but overall it’s been great. Still, though, neither Cody nor I can wait for the day when the entire cast can love on him and the theatre is just a place to get petted and have treats!<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">ANNIE</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>is on stage at the Empire Theatre in Richmond, VA through May 17, 2009. The company, the world’s oldest theatre committed to plays for young audiences, will be presenting three performances of two of the most celebrated productions from its permanent repertoire. On Friday, October 17 and Sunday, October 19 the company will perform its own adaptation of the famed Russian folktale, <span style="font-style: italic;">The Humpbacked Horse</span>.<br /><br />This classic Russian tale (originally written by Pyotr Pavlovich Yershov) has been translated into <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_987QdwPykP0/SOa-W8AGrYI/AAAAAAAAAoA/02a-7riT4pg/s1600-h/IMG_6746.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_987QdwPykP0/SOa-W8AGrYI/AAAAAAAAAoA/02a-7riT4pg/s200/IMG_6746.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5253095316647226754" border="0" /></a>numerous languages and is the source of the famed Bolshoi Ballet of the same title. Adapted by Elizabeth Mahoney Winthrop, the English translation was an award- winning children’s book beautifully illustrated by the noted Russian artist Alexander Koshkin. <span style="font-style: italic;">The Humpbacked Horse</span> tells of the adventures of Ivan, a young peasant who, through kindness and the help of his faithful and magical “humpbacked horse,” accomplishes the impossible by capturing numerous magical beasts, winning the love of the beautiful Tsarina and becoming the Tsar of all Russia. The story has entertained youth of all ages.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_987QdwPykP0/SOa-caFC-oI/AAAAAAAAAoI/MPtFgWM_Bkc/s1600-h/IMG_0824.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_987QdwPykP0/SOa-caFC-oI/AAAAAAAAAoI/MPtFgWM_Bkc/s200/IMG_0824.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5253095410620365442" border="0" /></a>In addition to <span style="font-style: italic;">The Humpbacked Horse</span>, the company will perform its adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s famous comic novella, <span style="font-style: italic;">Uncle’s Dream</span> at the Jepson Theatre in the Modlin Center for the Arts on the campus of the University of Richmond on Saturday, October 18. In this play, Dostoyevsky satirizes the attitudes and manners of provincial ne’er-do-wells while entertaining audiences with a farcical plot and zany characters. Dostoyevsky wrote few comedies, but this story and the company’s lively adaptation of it proves that he had a masterful command of the genre. This tale of a social -climbing mother who tries to arrange a marriage for her beautiful daughter to a very rich old man is filled with rich satire and broad farcical humor. The mother’s plans are, of course, thwarted by her daughter’s true love who, in a wonderful plot twist, convinces his uncle that the marriage proposal was all a bad dream.<br /><br />The Saratov Youth Theatre’s unique style combining elements of commedia dell’arte, music and dance is well served by these two wonderful tales. Both of these entertaining plays will be performed in Russian with English subtititles, with any possible language barriers overcome by the visually exciting production values and the virtuosity of the performances.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_987QdwPykP0/SOa-ne5ePSI/AAAAAAAAAoQ/gq9xfUj0RkM/s1600-h/IMG_0652.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_987QdwPykP0/SOa-ne5ePSI/AAAAAAAAAoQ/gq9xfUj0RkM/s400/IMG_0652.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5253095600892558626" border="0" /></a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1097237314084803017-3402910746433313920?l=theatreiv.blogspot.com'/></div>Billy Blogopherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07691877169927982670noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1097237314084803017.post-91197172597390603122008-06-10T16:54:00.006-04:002008-06-10T17:03:58.280-04:00ANNIE at the Empire!<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Theatre IV is thrilled to announce </span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">that we are able to bring you ANNIE</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">as part of our 2008 - 2009 Season!<br /><br /></span></div><span style="color: rgb(204, 51, 0);"><a id="0809" name="0809"><strong></strong></a></span> <a id="0809" name="0809"></a><a id="0809" name="0809"></a> <div align="left"> <p><a id="0809" name="0809"><strong><span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:78%;" ><img alt="Annie" src="http://www.theatreivrichmond.org/pics/annie_thumb.gif" align="left" border="0" height="227" hspace="10" vspace="2" width="137" /></span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:100%;" >April 24 – May 17, 2009</span></strong><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" ><br /></span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >at the Empire Theatre</span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" ><strong><br /></strong></span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" ><span class="style34">Book by Thomas Meehan; Lyrics by Martin Charnin; Music by Charles Strouse</span><strong><br /></strong></span></a></p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" ><a id="0809" name="0809"></a><a id="0809" name="0809"></a></span> <p style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" class="style33"><strong><span style=";font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" ><a id="0809" name="0809"><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(51, 255, 255);font-size:130%;" >**</span>Theatre IV just received the rights to do <em>Annie</em>. I thought, <span style="font-style: italic;">This old vaudeville house sure has seen its share of magic. What a tradition!!</span><br /><br />To be a small part of that tradition is a joyous and humbling thing.<br /><br />I glanced around and saw actors running lines by themselves, possessed of that slightly ‘crazy’ look, evidenced by the downward-directed muttering that we all do when we’re trying ever-so-diligently to whisper our lines letter-perfect.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_a1YzOLJzZX4/SDxeo5NbT1I/AAAAAAAAACk/Jw3yk3IEh9s/s1600-h/empire_setbuilding.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_a1YzOLJzZX4/SDxeo5NbT1I/AAAAAAAAACk/Jw3yk3IEh9s/s200/empire_setbuilding.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5205139325978365778" border="0" /></a>Our Director, Patti D’Beck, stood in the front row of the audience, commiserating with our Stage Manager, Wendy Vandergrift, as they went over the blueprint for the set design. Wendy was probably saying what I’ve heard her say about a trillion times: <span style="font-style: italic;">We Can Do That. </span>When she says it, she means it.<br /><br />Our Musical Director, Sandy Dacus was wrapped up warmly in a cute little knit sweater as she played one of the duets for Sky and Sarah on a portable keyboard. Every now and then she’d pop a cookie into her mouth without missing a note.<br /><br />As Rita Markova’s incredible singing of ‘<span style="font-style: italic;">I’ll Know</span>’ was giving me goosebumps, I scanned the theatre some more.<br /><br />I looked over to see the dance ensemble running through their choreography in the adjacent wing. Some were spinning, some were watching the action onstage. <span style="font-style: italic;">Even when they are at rest, they look graceful</span>, I thought.<br /><br />Our ‘Harry The Horse,’ John Winn, was sitting by the stage door, reading a newspaper, dressed in shorts, a T-shirt and a fedora. Two of our walking wounded, Jason Marks and Landon Nagel—one battling severe laryngitis and the other a recent arm injury—were chuckling about something mischievously while running lines together. <span style="font-style: italic;">Great</span>, I thought, <span style="font-style: italic;">Nicely-Nicely can’t talk and Benny can’t move!! What a pair!!</span><br /><br />Almost everywhere I looked, I saw smiles. I saw people getting to know one another. I saw friendships blossom and rare talent on display. And not an ‘ego’ in sight.<br /><br />I looked out into the audience--where a few more cast members were amiably chatting and getting to know one another-- past the tech table, up into the balcony to the vast, welcoming expanse of what is truly one of Richmond’s treasures.<br /><br />And I felt incredibly lucky.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Lucky to be around such great people. Lucky to be working for a class organization in a historic setting on one of the greatest of All-American musicals. And lucky to be making new friends while doing what I love most in all the world.</span><br /><br />This group is a really fun bunch. They make me laugh. I always leave rehearsal smiling. And we’ve only really been around each other a few weeks. I’m really looking forward to this run and the time I’ll spend with my new ‘Summer Family.’<br /><br />I cannot accurately describe the amount of talent, energy and enthusiasm being infused into this project. You’ll simply have to see it for yourself. Come spend some time with the cast of <a href="http://www.theatreivrichmond.org/index.html#guys"><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">Guys and Dolls</span></a> at The Empire Theatre this summer. For those of you that don't know what the Fairy Tale Ball is- let me fill you in. It is our annual black-tie/costume fundraiser for the company. The theme for the evening is designed around the closing show of our season- this years is <em>Peter Pan</em>. The theatre gets a full makeover; the stage becomes a dance floor with The Jangling Reinharts serving as our band for the evening, decorations abound, a giant tent fully stocked with food galore (sweet and savory), drink bars (for adults and kids), and all kinds of different games and activities. There is also a silent and live auction with amazing prizes, both big and small, to bid on.</span></div><div><br /><span style="color:#000000;">I bring this up why? To introduce you to our mascot for the event and our <em>Peter Pan</em> representative- the crocodile!</span></div><div><span style="color:#000000;"></span></div><div><span style="color:#000000;">The crocodile is based on Robert Meganck's gorgeous illustrations for the invitations this year, and David and Terrie Powers have worked long and hard to bring to life this GIANT reptile that will live atop our marquee for the run of <em>Peter Pan.</em></span> <div><span style="color:#000000;"></span></div><span style="color:#000000;">The crocodile comes with one small warning/disclaimer...</span></div><div><span style="color:#000000;">If you live in Richmond and happen to drive down Broad Street, please don't slow down and rubber neck at him. It is directed by Joe Pabst, whom you may remember as Lumiere in Theatre IV's production of <span style="font-style: italic;">Disney's Beauty and the Beast</span> at the historic Empire Theatre. He was most recently seen in Barksdale's critically-acclaimed production of <span style="font-style: italic;">Moonlight </span><span style="font-style: italic;">and Magnolias</span> (directed by Steve Perigard, and also featuring David Bridgewater, Scott Wichmann, and Joy Williams). His directing prowess was most recently displayed in <span style="font-style: italic;">The Odd Couple</span> at Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_987QdwPykP0/R8crsCYAC7I/AAAAAAAAAj0/GQhMZrVC7qA/s1600-h/joe+inscoe.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_987QdwPykP0/R8crsCYAC7I/AAAAAAAAAj0/GQhMZrVC7qA/s200/joe+inscoe.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172150732610079666" border="0" /></a><br /><br />I also saw the production of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's <span style="font-style: italic;">Follies</span> at Dogwood Dell in 2006. Really fantastic director! And I'm so excited to get to work with him!<br /><br />The <span style="font-style: italic;">Greater Tuna</span> cast stars Joe Inscoe and Billy Christopher Maupin! I'm so excited!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_987QdwPykP0/R8csECYAC8I/AAAAAAAAAj8/Zvhyukea_og/s1600-h/billy+christopher+maupin.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 116px; height: 175px;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_987QdwPykP0/R8csECYAC8I/AAAAAAAAAj8/Zvhyukea_og/s200/billy+christopher+maupin.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172151144926940098" border="0" /></a>So, the reason I write all this on the Theatre IV blog, is the let you know that the "An Actor Prepares..." series that started here during <span style="font-style: italic;">Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter </span>will be continued soon (or resurrected, perhaps I should say) on the Barksdale Buzz following the work in <span style="font-style: italic;">Greater Tuna</span>. YAY!<br /><br />The play is absolutely hysterical! You should definitely check it out! You can find more information on the <a href="http://barksdalerichmond.org/hanover.html#tuna">Barksdale website's Tuna page</a>. And you can order tickets by calling the Barksdale box office at 282-2620 or online <a href="http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?organ_val=22168&event_val=H1&schedule=list">here</a>.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1097237314084803017-7014050572294663532?l=theatreiv.blogspot.com'/></div>Billy Blogopherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07691877169927982670noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1097237314084803017.post-65148771069132482442008-02-28T11:12:00.007-05:002008-02-28T16:52:11.178-05:00The Making of... #5<span style="color: rgb(153, 255, 255);font-size:85%;" >Posted by Catherine Dudley</span><br /><br />Here is a look behind the scenes of a costume fitting.<br /><br /><br /><div align="center">This is Robert Throckmorton (Captain Hook) before.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"></span><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172065336414686034" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center;" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_P7DTJSBIxpM/R8beBUwby1I/AAAAAAAAAFI/3t-cwiMfur0/s320/IMG_0350.JPG" border="0" /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_P7DTJSBIxpM/R8bek0wby2I/AAAAAAAAAFQ/y6W0alicpvA/s1600-h/IMG_0337.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172065946300042082" style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_P7DTJSBIxpM/R8bek0wby2I/AAAAAAAAAFQ/y6W0alicpvA/s200/IMG_0337.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_P7DTJSBIxpM/R8be0kwby3I/AAAAAAAAAFY/xlhZxYUQbKk/s1600-h/IMG_0340.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172066216882981746" style="margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right;" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_P7DTJSBIxpM/R8be0kwby3I/AAAAAAAAAFY/xlhZxYUQbKk/s200/IMG_0340.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /></div><div align="center"><br />This is the "mock-up" phase.
