We follow a lectionary. Each week we have a predetermined set of readings - an Old Testament, an Epistle, and a reading from one of the Holy Gospels. We also chant one of the Psalms. I've been in other churches that don't use a lectionary and I find it great for several reasons:

1. It helps a pastor to teach the whole council of God rather than getting stuck on one of his pet peeves.

2. It helps a pastor to put the Word of God first. I've seen countless examples of pastors who decide what they want to say, THEN go to scripture to back it up. This is "man centered" preaching rather than "God-centered" preaching.

3. Because the readings are predetermined, the laity has the ability to read ahead and be familiar with the text before Sunday worship.

4. Within a three year period, we will read through the entire New Testament and a rather large portion of the Old Testament.

Each summer we do a character study, but this summer we're doing a twist on it. We are doing a series called "Heart Check" with Proverbs 4:23 as the anchor.

We're looking at people in the Bible who got it wrong and what we can learn from them. They all had heart issues (Cain - jealousy; Esau - instant gratification; Balaam - stubborness; Saul; Sampson - not finishing well; Mikal - reserving worship from God; Rehoboam - poor leadership decisions; Judas - God in our own image)

We are in a series called "The Power of ONE." It's about what can happen when ONE person steps out. It's about what can happen when we are in unity and when we paddle as one (Hawaiian canoe, being from Hawaii) with one heart, one purpose, at the same cadence, in the same direction. When the six people in the canoe paddle like this, it's as if the canoe is being paddled by ONE canoe.

Last week we wove Father's Day into it (power of a dad) and this week off of Philippians 2 (unity)and what happens when we have the same HEART, MIND and PURPOSE.
Next week is ONE person reaching their nation/workplace/school. All it takes is ONE.

Doing a series called Crazy in August...focusing on our crazy calling, our crazy mission as a church (it's our anniversary), and showing crazy love to our community.

this will lead us into September, where we're doing a series called Amazing Grace, where we will basically present the gospel.

The idea is for these two series to go hand in hand...fire our people up about our mission and challenge them to invite, and then follow up with a series built on the Gospel.

I am doing a 9 week series called "Winners vs. Losers." We're going to examine a winner one week, a loser the next, etc. These people we're studying are people from various places in the Bible and their classification comes from how the world would view them. We will examine their story and see how the way the world views a person is not the same way that God views them - usually the opposite! Example of a "winner" - King Nebuchanezzar. Example of a "loser" - Joseph from Genesis. Main points we are hitting on - the importance of the relationship with God (evident in all the "losers", non-existent with the "winners"). Another main point - we don't do good things so that we have a right relationship with God; Jesus died on the cross to give us a right relationship with God, and when we accept it and live in it we just want to do good things. Last week will be a wrap up week to bring all the ideas together.

- oh yeah, and I'm not preaching this, I'm teaching the high school class at my church and this is our summer series.

This Sunday we kick off a 3 week series called "Crave" about craving the things of God. Making lots of sensory ties with food for this one.

Then doing a 3 week series called "Hollywood Christianity" based on Matthew 6. basically a modern twist on living like Pharisees and not having your faith be a set of surface, superficial rules.

Starting a 3 week series in late August called "Karma". Basically disproving this secular theory with biblical truths.

Then we move to a 3 week series called "Fanatic" basically making the sports fan tie with being a Jesus fanatic.

Then we kick off a 6 week series called "Epic" about the grand story of God and how he used 6 central characters from the Bible in His story.
