Cool Stuff: Superman Stuff!

It's an all-Superman edition of Cool Stuff this time, and I'm starting out with the 12-inch Megos!

Well, two of them, anyway!

This Melmac cup is from the 1960s!

1970s-era mirror!

Ideal made this playcase, and it looks like one of the missing figures from this set was Krypto... guess that means when I'm making much more money, I'll have to try to acquire one!

This odd-looking Japanese toy was a die-cast figure!

All these Mexican lobby cards were made to promote episodes of the George Reeves TV series, which were shown in theatres! Dig the comics cover art used on some of them!

This paratrooper Superman was obviously a bootleg item!

These were made as pins and refrigerator magnets!

Presto Magix!

What a rip-off this was... once the scissors are off the card, there's no indicator that they were a Superman item!

This 'n That Time, Pre-Thanksgiving Edition!

Time for another posting of various and sundry items not necessarily worthy of a post of their own...

ITEM! I want to publicly thank those of you who have been clicking on the AdSense links in this and my other blogs... so far, I've received two payments from these, and that money really comes in handy! If you feel so inclined, I'd appreciate it if, each day you check out my blogs, you click on at least one of the ads... you don't have to buy anything from the page that comes up in order for me to score a few cents from them!

ITEM! You may have noticed that some words and phrases in this blog's posts have a double blue underline on them... this is yet another thing I'm trying in an attempt to make this blog pay for me. If you bring your mouse over these, a little popup will appear that shows you something, and if you click on that, I have a chance to earn a little bit of money. I'll give this a try for a few months, and if it doesn't seem to be working for me, I'll drop it entirely. If it starts working, I may well add it to the other blogs.

ITEM! Those of you who are my Facebook friends already know this, but this year, I'll be preparing a total of two Thanksgiving dinners! The first one was on Sunday for my extended family (since some of my siblings are celebrating Thanksgiving Day with in-laws), and we had a total of 20 people at that one. Tomorrow, on Thanksgiving Day, it's the four of us plus some friends of ours and their children who don't have extended family in town... fortunately, that'll only be about 12 people then! That'll end up being a total of two turkeys, one ham, probably 10 pounds of potatoes, four gallons of stuffing (based on what was leftover from Sunday that fit in a two gallon zip bag), four cans of cranberry sauce, and who knows how much gravy plus other fixings... sheesh! We'll definitely be tired of turkey before too much longer!

ITEM! Shortly after we'd finished the family Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday, I was talking with my brother Jeff and sister Debi, when one of them (I forget which) said that my daughter, Desi, looked like a Hobbit baby! Well, the way my mind works, I immediately pictured a Saturday morning cartoon show called "Hobbit Babies," which would feature all the major Lord of the Rings characters as babies, and their adventures, with Gandalf serving as their "manny"... Legolas would be riding his hobby horse named Strider, naturally... and since my kids love watching Dora the Explorer, I also pictured the Hobbit Babies going on adventures, but watching out for Gollum, who always tries to swipe their stuff, foiling him by saying "Gollum No Swiping!" three times!

ITEM! Speaking of ideas for TV shows (not that I expect the above one to ever be seriously considered), for a while now I've had an absolutely wonderful idea for a TV show, and I'm throwing it out here just in case someone happens to read it and passes it along to someone who can make it happen... "Hogwarts: The Next Generation." Since the last Harry Potter movies will be over and done with before too long, it occurred to me that there's a way to continue the franchise, using whoever they can get from the movies to reprise their roles. The basic concept is this: Hogwarts is back to business as usual after the events of "The Deathly Hallows," and a new group of students is starting their first year. Among these new students is a group of four friends who grew up together, and when they go through the Sorting Hat ceremony, they find themselves split up amongst the four different houses! Along with learning about magic (and using concepts that were mentioned in the books but didn't make it into the movies), these four friends would be learning how to maintain their friendship while being in competing houses. Perhaps this series could be comprised of multi-part episodes that could be released on DVD as an edited-together "movie." I'm thinking Disney Channel for this. Most of the filming could use the existing sets from the Potter films, and of course, there'd be references to stuff from the Potter movies.

I hope that if someone does run with this idea, they'll at least have the courtesy of sending me a check to acknowledge that I came up with it.

ITEM! Just in case your curious about my retraining as a Medical Assistant... this quarter (which ends on December 8), I have Technical Math, English Composition, and Human Biology. Now, you think that, being an inveterate blogger, I'd be scoring A's like crazy in English Comp... well, as it is, I'm scoring more like a B+ on average. Part of the reason for this is that, well, English Comp is a very different writing animal than blogging is, and sometimes it's difficult to really tell what's expected of an assignment. I've posted two of my papers that I thought would be of interest to you guys here (Godzilla as Pop Culture Icon and Comic Book Conventions as public spectacle), but the other two were probably not as interesting to my fellow geeks. The third paper I wrote was an argument paper, responding to an article about Gun Control as it related to three school shooting attacks... and while I was happy with the grade I got on that, my professor thought that paper could be rewritten to score a higher grade. I turned that one in yesterday, and will be waiting until Tuesday to find out if it was worth the effort. The final paper I'm working on is on Euthanasia, which is something I feel pretty strongly about. I'm in favor of the concept of "Death With Dignity" for those with terminal illnesses. If anyone's interested, after I finish the final draft, I'll post it here.

The other two classes? Well, Technical Math was mostly a refresher for me, as I hadn't had a math class since about 1979. I'm doing pretty well with the homework part of it, but for some reason, my test scores are in the 80-85 percent range (I used to get straight A's in my junior high and high school math classes). The real surprise for me has been Human Biology, which I believe I'll be getting a B+ or possibly even an A- in... maybe even an A! That's the class I've actually struggled in the most.

Winter Quarter should be interesting... I'm taking an online class in MS Word (which I should get an easy A out of, as I've been using Word for about 20 years or longer), and two different classes on Diversity -- Human Dimensions and Intercultural Communications. Of these classes, two of them are requirements, and one is an elective. I forget off the top of my head which of the Diversity classes was the elective, but it was a Psychology course, and I enjoyed my Lifespan Psychology class in the Summer. Due to one class being online, this will give me much more free time next quarter than I've had this quarter!

ITEM! I've started working on the January and February posts for this blog, and I've wanted to let you guys know to expect a minor change or two when those start up. Since I haven't been able to get to a comic book convention at all this year, my monster magazine collection has just about been used up! So the Wednesday monster mag review is going to morph a bit... I'll be moving the Crestwood Monster Movies books out of Children's Book Theatre and into the monster mag feature, although there won't be one of those appearing here for a bit. The first feature that will start in January will be pages from an old book I bought at a garage sale by Tony Tallarico named "Things You've Always Wanted to Know About Monsters... But Were Afraid to Ask!" After that, I'll probably feature the single issue of Monster World that I recently won on eBay (thanks to a birthday gift of an eBay Gift Card from my brother and sister-in-law -- I also finally got a Krypto Heroclix as well as four Superman tabloid comics), and then I'll get to the Crestwood books, unless I manage to score some monster mags before then.

The next article we look at is William K. Everson's look at the Frederic March version of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" as well as "Mystery of the Wax Museum," considered at the time to be "lost horror classics," although I doubt they'd be considered lost these days!

I'm afraid I really don't have much to say about this piece!

Page 33 features another of those one-page pieces on a then-recent horror flick, which always feel to me like they're filler material.

And page 34 has the first page of an article on Dark Shadows (the cover-feature), which is continued on page 54. I never got into DS myself!
