On November 6th, 2009, I appeared as a panelist on NTV's Bakusho Mondai, Ota Sori show. The manifest was "We should not pay one more yen for American forces in Japan! We should have them all leave!".

２００９年１１月６日、私は日本テレビ「太田光の私が総理大臣になったら。。。秘書田中」に出演しました。今回のマニフェストは、“アメリカに今後１円も払いません！米軍には出て行ってもらいます！”　内容は、将来に日本防衛の為に日本でアメリカ軍基地は必要かどうか？です。

I appeared as a former US Marine, and my position on this subject is, AGREE. Let me explain further.

私は元米軍海兵隊として出演しました。この話題で、私の意見は米軍基地は要りません。マニフェストに賛成でした。これから説明します。

The present structure of US forces in Japan is set up primarily to fight the Cold War. Yet the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Since that time, America did not reduce it's military presence outside the United States, in fact the American government has expanded to cover every area on the planet. America has some 753 military bases outside the United States.

現在の在日米軍基地は冷戦を戦う形に成っています。しかし、ソ連連邦は１９９１年に消えました。その時からアメリカは軍を減らしでは無く、軍の居る場所を増やしています。実際、地球のすべてをカバーしています。アメリカ国外で軍基地は７５３くらい有ります。

When I first came to Japan in 1974, there were some 100,000 US troops in Japan. At present, the number is about 47,000. However, while the number of troops has decreased, the size of American bases has not. In the period that I have been in Japan, America has returned very little territory to Japan.

１９７４年に私が初めて日本に来た時に、在日米兵は１００，０００人でした。現在の数は約４７，０００です。しかし、在日米兵の数を減らしても、米軍の基地は減らしていません。私は３５年間日本で住んでいる期間に、米軍は日本にほとんど軍基地の所を返していません。

Is there a military threat to Japan?

日本に軍事的な脅迫は有りますか？

At present, not so much. Shall we look at a little history? At the end of World War II, Soviet fighting against Japanese Imperial forces went on until about mid September 1945, despite the Japanese surrender on August 15. Southern Sakhalin, Karafuto, and the Kuriles were overrun. A Soviet invasion force bound for Hokkaido at this time turned back.

あまり有りません。ちょっと歴史を考えましょう。日本帝国軍とソ連軍の戦いは、日本が８月１５日降伏でも、９月の中旬まで続いていました。南樺太と千島列島はとられました。北海道へ向いたソ連侵略の部隊はソ連に戻りました。

In 1950 the North Koreans invaded South Korea, and the present day Jieitai was formed.

１９５０年で、朝鮮は韓国に侵略しましたので、現在の自衛隊を創りました。

As the Soviet Union possessed very little in amphibious warfare capability, once Japanese military forces were reconstituted, the threat of a invasion of Japan disappeared. During the Cold War, the military threat to Japan was primarily Naval blockade by Communist submarines. I only say submarines, because in a general war, Communist surface naval forces would have had a very short life against joint American/Japanese defense.

ソ連連邦は上陸作戦の可能性は有りませんでしたから、日本自衛隊は創設された時から日本に侵略される危険性は消えました。冷戦の時に、日本のメイン軍事脅迫は、共産主義国の潜水艦海上封鎖でした。私は潜水艦だけと書いている理由は、戦争が有りましたら日本／アメリカ海軍がすぐその他の共産主義国軍艦を沈没させました。

In 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed, and the military threat to Japan disappeared. Today, Russia has some 17 submarines in Asian waters, but only 4 Akula class. The Akula's are good boats, and could be scary. However Japan has some 20 submarines of excellent quality. And Japan has an excellent surface Navy. If a war happened now, Japan could hunt those subs down. They would probably sink some ships, but we would get them.

１９９１年ソ連連邦は崩壊しましたので、日本への軍事脅迫は消えました。現在、太平洋艦隊ロシアの潜水艦数は１７隻です。その中では、４隻だけはアクラ型です。アクラ型は品質がいい潜水艦ですけれど、ちょっと怖いです。しかし、日本は２０隻の品質が素晴らし潜水艦が有ります。その他の海上自衛隊艦は品質が素晴らしい軍艦です。もし、ロシアと戦争が有りましたら、日本がそのアクラ型を追跡して捕まえります。アクラ型は何隻もの日本貨物船を沈没させるけれど、そのうちに自分達が沈没です。

The Chinese Navy does have some 57 submarines, but their quality is poor compared to Japan. We would sink them. Also, they have to pass through a chain of island nations to reach the open Pacific. In any case, Chinese forces are primarily orientated towards the Spratly islands.

中国は５７隻の潜水艦を持っていますが、品質は低いです。もし日本海上自衛隊と戦いに成りましたら、すぐ沈没されます。それと、中国海軍は太平洋へ進行する為に、島国の鎖を通過する必要が有ります。とにかく、中国海軍は基本的に南シナ海のスプラトリー諸島へ向かっています。

North Korea has some 21 submarines, but they are old and of poor quality. My idea is that due to the decrepit North Korean economy, most of their submarines probably cannot sail because of mechanical difficulties.

朝鮮の潜水艦は２１隻ですが、全部は古くて品質は悪いです。私の考えで、朝鮮の経済状態はとても悪くて、ほとんどの朝鮮潜水艦は機械的な問題で動かないでしょう。

On the Bakushou Mondai show. Kevin Klone did bring up the issue of North Korean missiles. I am not very impressed with North Korean missiles. They are of very poor quality. And I do not believe that North Korea has a nuclear weapon, I believe their so called tests were simply a massive amount of conventional explosive laced with nuclear materials. Even if they did have a nuclear weapon, they do not have the technical ability to miniaturize it an put it on a missile.

「太田総理」の番組で、ケビンクローンさんは朝鮮のミサイルの事を話しました。私は朝鮮ミサイルについて強い印象に成っていません。品質はひどいです。それと、朝鮮が核兵器を開発出来た事を信じていません。私の考えは、その核兵器のテストは放射能を入れた普通の爆発物でした。もし、核兵器が有りましたとしても、ミサイルに乗せる様な小型化の技術の手法は有りません。

In any case, the best defense against a missile attack is deterrence. Japan can easily buy a few hundred cruise missiles from America. If America does not want to sell we can buy them from Russia. We don't need a nuclear weapon for deterrence against North Korea. A few hundred precise weapons like cruise missiles would do.

とにかく、一番いいミサイルにたいしての防衛は、抑止です。日本はアメリカから数百本の巡航ミサイルを買ったらいいでしょう。もし、アメリカがその巡航ミサイルを売りたくなかったら、ロシアから買ってもいいです。朝鮮にたいして抑止の為に、核兵器は必要有りません。数百本の正確な巡航ミサイルで十分です。

Kevin did mention the large North Korean army, but their equipment is terrible, their soldiers are so malnourished that their average size is of a Japanese or South Korean 14 year old. If they invaded South Korea, they could not penetrate more than 3 kilometers. They have no Naval vessels or aircraft that can function long enough to reach Japan.

ケビンさんは朝鮮軍の兵士の数を言いましたけれど、朝鮮軍の武器は整備されていませんし、朝鮮軍の普通の兵士は栄養不良ですから、大人の兵士は日本か韓国の１４歳の子供と同じ身長です。韓国に侵略しましたら、３キロ位しか進めません。日本まで行ける軍艦、それとも軍機は有りません。
In this first installment, I have explained how neighboring countries are not dangerous to Japan. In the next part, I will explain the difficulty of invading Japan.

この１回分で、私は隣の国々は軍事的に日本に危険性は無いと説明しています。次回に私は日本に侵略する難しい点を説明します。

昨晩（１１月２日）、石破茂衆議院議員と山本一太参議院議員と自分達の戦艦大和模型の事を話しました。やはり、石破先生は一番大きい模型を持っています。私はドイツで製造されました模型（参照：下記のリンク）を持っていますので、１／１２５０のスケールです。家に全部で２５０隻位が有ります。

ところで、どうしてこのブログのマックスは、そんなに偉い方達と戦艦大和の話を出来ましたか？勿論、私は普段そう言う偉い人達に会いません。昨晩は、日本テレビの控え室でその会話をしました。日本テレビ？

そう。また爆笑問題、「太田光の私が総理大臣になったら。。。秘書田中」に、パネリストで出演します！今回のマニフェストは、“アメリカに今後１円も払いません！米軍には出て行ってもらいます！”　在日米軍基地の問題についてです。石破先生と山本先生はどう言う立場ですか？マックスはどう言う意見ですか？

もっと税金を払わせて下さい　Let us pay more tax

In Germany, a group of some 44 wealthy individuals has formed, and has petitioned the government of re-elected Chancellor Merkel that they be allowed to be pay more in taxes.

ドイツで、有る４４人のお金持ちのドイツ人はグループを作って、再び選挙で選ばれたメルケル首相に嘆願書を書いて、彼達の願いは追加に税金を払いたいです。

Their idea is, that they have the ability to pay, they have more money than they need, so they should be taxed more. They say that an increased "wealth tax" of 5% for two years would provide a lot of money to help fund investment in ecology, education, and social justice.

彼達の考えで、もっと高い税金を払う事が出来る収入が有りますし、普通の生活で必要なお金が有りますから、もっと高い税金を払うべきと言っています。このグループのメンバーの考えで、二年間の”富裕税”を払えば、ドイツのエコロジー、教育、社会的公正などを国が十分に投資が出来ます。

When I read this, I was quite surprised. In America, greed has destroyed the American economy. All Americans are guilty here, corporate Presidents, with their obscenely high salaries, financial traders who devised such complex transaction as derivatives, and the average people who thought that they could use their house as collateral to invest in stocks.

この記事を読んで、私はびっくりしました。アメリカでは、欲張りがアメリカの経済を崩壊させています。この事で全員のアメリカ人は悪いですが、大企業の社長の法外に高い給料、とても複雑な取引を開発した金融のトレーダー、自分の家を担保として利用した普通の人々、この色々なアメリカ人は欲張りでアメリカの経済を崩壊させました。

Just when the effects of Global Warming and Peak Oil are beginning to appear, American greed has destroyed their ability to finance measures to deal with these coming disasters.

これから、地球の全体は温暖化と石油減らしの時代に入りますが、アメリカはこの問題に対して金銭的に戦う可能性はアメリカ人の欲張りで壊されました。

Actually, the action of these few wealthy Germans shows us the ideal on how we will have to live in the future. Capitalism is certainly not an answer. America has shown us what kind of society pure capitalism leads to, what Americans have created is an economy that is based on greed, producing for the sake of profit for a few.

正直に言いますと、この数人の金持ちドイツ人は理想的に将来の生活を教えています。資本主義は解決では有りません。アメリカは純粋資本主義の社会を世界に見せていますが、こう言う社会の基本が欲張りですが、数人だけが利益を貰います。

The average American is obsessed with buying things, and all this production and overuse of fossil fuels has created runaway Global Climate change, we are now staring extinction in the face. Our only hope is to bio engineer our way out of this mess.

普通のアメリカ人は物を買う事に頭がいっぱい、この物生産と化石燃料の利用が自然的に止められない温暖化、地球の生き物をすべて絶滅に成る可能性は高いです。これから、空気を人工的に直す事は必要です。

Despite the denials of virtually all Americans, America is well along the path to disintegration.

ほとんどのアメリカ人の否認でも、アメリカはまもなく崩壊に成ります。

To survive, societies will have to develop a more cooperative attitude. If a few individuals become rich by destroying the lives of many people, eventually they will destroy the nation and themselves. And climate destruction caused by Global Warming is going to affect us all, wealth will not allow us to buy our way out of that problem.

生き残る為に、これから世界の国々はもっと協力的な立場をとらなければ成りません。多くの人々の生活を壊して、数人がお金持ちに成ると、そのうち国と人々が消えます。それと、温暖化の影響は皆に有ります。お金で逃亡道を買えません。

Living in Japan for 35 years, I have seen that in general Japanese have a group identity. Japanese corporate executive officers do not take the extreme salaries that American executives do.

日本で３５年間住んでいて、やはり日本人は集団意識が有ると分かっています。日本の大企業の社長は、アメリカ人みたいに法外な高い給料を貰いません。

Of course in the future, there will still be wealthy people, but I think the actions of these few Germans tells us something, that is that we are all on this planet together, and we are all going to have to help each other.

勿論、将来に金持ちの人は居ます。しかし，私達地球人はこの数人のドイツ人から勉強出来ると思います。その勉強で、私達は共同で地球に住んでいますが、お互いに協力をしなければ成りません。

Americanisms VII アメリカの独特な英語

私はこのブログでたまに"Americanisms"を書いています。
この記事で、すこしでも面白いアメリカ英語の言葉とかフレーズを教えます。
今回は、Americanisms　VIIです。私はこの　Americanisms でローマ帝国の数字を使っています。以前、アメリカ人の考えで、アメリカはローマ帝国の後継国と書きましたが、時々日常生活で使っています。

今日のテーマは“お酒”です。

Hair of the dog that bit you

直訳で、貴方が噛まれた犬の毛を飲みます。これは、１９７５年スコットランドのロックバンド”ナザレス”の曲名です。意味は、“向かい酒”です。スコットランドで、犬の毛を飲むって本当なのかな？

Watering hole

アフリカの砂漠で、帯水層から水が自然に上がって、小さな池みたいに成ります。動物達はいっぱい集まります。この"Watering hole"と言う意味は、バーです。
例えば；　Where is your favorite watering hole?

Beer chugging contest

子供に汽車のシュッシュッポッポの音は、英語で　chug chug chug と成ります。
しかし、ビールの場合は一気飲みと言う事です。特に、アメリカ大学生はパーティで、 "Beer chugging contest" は人気です。その後は救急車かな？

Hangover

二日酔いです。

Belly up to the bar

ビールをよく飲むと、お腹が出ます。ビール腹と言います。私のブログの読者の中で、私と個人的に会った事の有る人は私のビール腹を見た事が有ります。このフレーズの意味は、バーに入って、バーのカウンターとお腹がぶつかります。これから飲もうぜと言う意味です。

Drink enough beer to float a battleship

時々、友達から、”マックス、貴方はどの位ビールを飲めるのですか？”と聞かれます。私の返事は、”戦艦が浮かぶ位の量”です。まあ、日本では世界一番大きい戦艦大和が有りましたが、戦艦大和でも浮かぶ様に頑張ります！

Ripped to the gills

魚のえらまではがします。人間にえらが有りましたら、たぶん、ほっぺたに成るでしょう。お腹からほっぺたまでお酒がたまっています。勿論、その位飲むと、行動はメチャクチャに成るから、"You are ripped."　と言います。メチャクチャに酔っぱらうと言う意味です。

My eyeballs are floating

ビールをいっぱい飲んで、お腹から目玉までたまっています。ビールの量で、目玉が浮かんでいます。もう、トイレへ行った方がいいでしょう？

Hammer　はハンマーですが、ハンマーで打ちました。とても酔っぱらっています。

hooch

秘密の自家製お酒、濁酒、どぶろくの事です。

booze

お酒です。

suds

泡立つの事です。生ビールの泡です。
こう言うふうに使います；　Let's go get some suds. ビールを飲みに行きましょう！

アメリカ経済の崩壊　American Economic Collapse

Usually, I write about military or political topics. Today, I am going into new territory, and write about the US economy. These days, writing about war and politics, well basically they are not cheerful subjects. Well, very unfortunately, the American economy is just as bleak.

普段、私はこのブログで、軍事関係、それとも政治の事について書いています。今日、新しい内容に入って、アメリカ経済の事を書きます。最近、戦争と政治を書くと、そんなに陽気な話では無いです。残念ながら、アメリカ経済の事は同じ様に暗いです。

I was born in Chicago in 1956. By the time I was five years old, my family had moved from an apartment in the city to a house in the suburbs. This was pretty much the basic American dream. At that time, most Americans could do this, well if they were White at least. In those days, Black people simply did not live in the suburbs.

私は１９５６年シカゴ生まれです。５歳に成った時に、市内のアパートから郊外の一軒家へ引っ越ししました。これは、基本的なアメリカンドリームでした。その当時、ほとんどのアメリカ人はこの夢を可能でした。まあ、白人のアメリカ人でしたら。郊外に黒人が生活する事は無理でした。他の白人達、不動産から入れてくれませんでした。

This was the 1960's, and I think we might think of this as America's Golden Age.

これは１９６０年代で、アメリカの黄金時代と考えていいでしょう。

As a historian, I think it is no accident that this period also corresponded with America expanding it's power across the world. When the American President spoke, everybody, enemy nations included, listened.

歴史学者として、アメリカはこの時代に世界で国力を拡大していましたが、偶然では有りませんでした。アメリカ大統領が宣言した時に、世界の国々、敵国でも、真剣に聞きました。

Yet now America is on the verge of collapse. What happened?

しかし、現在、アメリカはまもなく崩壊の状態に入ります。どうしてこんな事になったのですか？

I think it is the fault of all Americans, not only the rich. Often, I have talked of American Exceptionalism, and I think this is to blame. Americans do not study history, in fact, they think America is immune to history. This is the basic tenet of American Exceptionalism, that America will always prosper no matter what. When you press Americans for their reasoning for this concept, they often get angry. They feel that it should be obvious, but the fact remains that they cannot explain why America is immune to history.

やっぱり、アメリカの問題は、お金持ちのアメリカ人だけではなく、すべてのアメリカ人の責任です。私は“アメリカ特別さ”をよく書いていますが、この考え方に原因が有ると思います。アメリカ人は歴史を勉強しませんが、実際にアメリカは歴史がどうなっても関係ないと思っています。この考えは、”アメリカ特別さ”の基礎です。どう言う事が有っても、どんなトラブルか事件が有っても、アメリカはいつでも豊かな生活に成ります。もし、アメリカ人にこの考え方を”はっきりに説明して下さい”と聞きましたら、彼達は怒ります。アメリカ人の考えでこれは明白ですが、しかし真実は何故アメリカが歴史に影響されない国に成ったか，説明を出来ません。

One of my historical passions has always been the Roman Empire. It was the greatest State that Western culture has produced. Yet Rome did eventually collapse, and fragment in to many different nations.

昔から、私の一つの情熱的な勉強は、ローマ帝国でした。西洋文化の中で今まで一番素晴らしい国だったと思っています。しかし、ローマ帝国はだんだん崩壊に成って、色々な国々に分けました。

Americans often like to say that the United States is the heir of the Roman Empire. What they are referring to here is military power that straddled the known world. Yet they ignore Rome's eventual disintegration.

アメリカ人は自分の国がローマ帝国の後継国と考えています。特に、アメリカとローマ帝国の軍力を比べています。アメリカでもローマ帝国の軍力はその当時に世界中にまたがりました。しかし、アメリカ人はローマ帝国の崩壊を無視しています。

And I believe that this lack of historical knowledge, this conceit of superiority, has been the seeds of the coming American downfall.

この歴史の知識不足、この優位なうぬぼれ、はこれからアメリカ崩壊の原因と思います。

The average American citizen, and the average American corporation, cannot think more than a few months ahead. Since the 1960's, average American people have felt that they had a right to all the material possessions they wanted, and to have them right away. This led to the credit economy, where people began to buy everything on credit. Not only things needed for life, but vacations, expensive electronic equipment, things which in reality have turned out to be useless junk.

普通のアメリカ市民、それと普通のアメリカの会社は、数ヶ月先しか計画出来ません。１９６０年代から、普通のアメリカ人は自分の好きな物的財産の権利が有ると思って、それで、早速手に入れる権利も有ると考えています。この考え方の結果は信用経済、アメリカ国民はクレジットカードで買い物をしました。生活必需品だけでは無く、電化製品、休日旅行、全部クレジットカードで買って、本当に価値のない物が多く、がらくたに成っています。

It used to be an American joke that the great American pastime was shopping. All of that shopping was on credit, which is debt. You see, Americans always felt that there would be growth. As long as the economy was growing, you could expect your income to keep increasing, so why not keep buying things on credit?

昔のアメリカンジョークで、”アメリカ人の国民的な趣味は買い物です”が有りました。その買い物はすべてクレジットでしたが、正直に言うと借金でした。アメリカ人の気持ちは、経済は永遠に成長すると思いました。”経済はいつまでも成長でしょう？それで、自分の個人の収入は増えるでしょう？クレジットで買い物していいじゃない！”これは普通のアメリカ人の気持ちでした。

When I first came to Japan 35 years ago, I felt that this was a natural way of life. If I wanted something, I could have it right away. Now, I recoil in horror at the thought of credit, it is debt. Perhaps I have taken a Japanese attitude here. But I have learned that being patient, waiting until you have the money to buy something you want, I now think that is a better way of life. And it really makes you think about the importance of what you are buying.

私は３５年前に、初めて日本へ来た時に、このクレジットの生活は自然な人生と思いました。何か欲しい物が有りましたら、すぐに手に入ります。現在、借金で買い物をするのがひどいと思っています。もしかしたら、日本人の様な考え方が始まりました。しかし、我慢して、好きな物をお金が集まるまで買わない、これはもっと常識な生活方法と思います。

I have read that American financial houses have gotten back into derivatives and credit default swaps trading.

アメリカ金融会社は、金融派生商品とクレジットデフォルトスワップを再び行なっていると新聞で読みました。

These were the type of trades that nearly destroyed the world's economy last year. It was only by extra ordinary effort, and cooperation between the outgoing Bush administration and incoming Obama administration, that this was prevented from becoming a world disaster.

この様な取引で、一年前の秋に世界の経済が破壊する直前でした。まもなく退陣するブッシュ政権と新しいオバマ政権が協力的に一生懸命努力して、この大惨事を止めました。

Yet American financial houses are doing it again. American economic practices have always been based on expansion. But how many cars can we buy? The average American family owns several. Now when Americans lose their jobs, they cannot sell the cars, they have no value. There are too many used cars. They cannot sell their house. Often, the average American used their home as collateral for all the loans, and yes even stock trading that they did. People often do this even when still paying a mortgage loan. Now, when trouble hits, they find the house has no value.

しかし、アメリカの金融会社はまたその危険な取引を行なっています。アメリカ人の経済企画，考え方はいつも拡大する事は基本です。しかし、車を何台を買える？普通のアメリカの家族は数台の車を持っています。仕事を失ったら、その車も売れない、中古品で価値は有りません。アメリカで中古車は有り過ぎです。家も売れません。アメリカ人もよく自分の一軒家をローンと株取引の担保の為に利用しています。抵当払い途中でも他のローンとか株取引の担保で使っています。それで、経済がトラブルに成った時に、その一軒家の価値は有りません。

And even Americans who do not overuse their credit, they are suddenly finding out that they are losing their homes. Why? They made a mortgage loan with a bank. That bank got involved in credit default swap trading, one major financial institution in the swap went belly up, the whole thing collapses. Well then this unlucky family finds out that their house is being taken over by another bank and they are being evicted. And becoming homeless usually means that you will lose your job.

クレジットを使い過ぎのアメリカ人でも一軒家を失っています。何故？家を買う為に、銀行と抵当住宅ローンをします。しかしその銀行はクレジットスワップのグループに参加して、そのグループの一つの大きい金融会社が倒産に成って、すべてのグループは滅びります。この運が悪い家族に別の銀行とか金融会社がその住宅ローンを持つと、立ち退かせる命令も来ます。それでホームレスに成って、ホームレスの状態に成るとだいたい仕事も失います。

Corporate practice has always been to fire people when economic times are bad. In Japan, losing your job until recently has always been a sign of shame. Yet in America since I was born, it was common. A company would find that it makes more money by firing people, the excess number of people are gone. Now Japan has adopted this American practice with the hakken system.

経済が悪く成る時に、アメリカの企業は簡単にスタッフをクビにします。日本では、仕事を失う事がとても恥ずかしい事件です。私が生まれた時から、アメリカではこれは普通です。例えば、有る会社で、余剰の人をなくしましたら利益が増えますので、すぐ実行します。現在、日本ではこのシステムは派遣として行なわれています。

In America, it was assumed that people would go get a job somewhere else. But now there are no more jobs. So the people remain jobless, and eventually cannot pay their mortgages. Then the bank takes over their home. The number of homeless families with children in America is now in the millions. How can such children go to school? Perhaps the only future for them is to become criminals or prostitutes.

アメリカでは、この余剰の人々が別の会社で仕事が始まると思っています。しかし、現在他の仕事は有りません。数多くの人は失業状態に入って、住宅ローンの支払いが出来なく成ります。銀行は差し押さえします。子供も一緒のホームレスのアメリカ家族は、現在何百万に成っています。その子供達はどう言うふうに学校へ出席出来るのですか？もしかしたら、彼達の将来は犯罪者と売春しか有りません。

The truth is, even while average Americans have made stupid decisions, American corporations have become monsters. The people who work for them are regarded as nothing but machines. And when they are not profitable, the machines are simply thrown away. I am very appalled at the way financial traders can create homeless people by their trades simply to make profit. By destroying average American families, the are destroying the foundation of the nation.

正直に言うと、普通のアメリカ人は馬鹿な経済計画を作りながら、アメリカの企業は怪獣に成っています。その企業の労働者は人間ではなく、ただの機械と見られています。簡単に捨てられています。私は利益を増やす為に、ホームレス家族を創る金融取引者にとても怒っています。普通の家族を壊すと、国の基盤も壊します。

And don't get sick in America, or don't get in a traffic accident. The American insurance industry is not to help people, it is to make money. If you cannot pay, you die, really. 60% of American personal bankruptcies are due to medical emergencies. Usually, the people end up losing their home, then their job, then it is the streets.

それと、アメリカで病気に成ったり、それとも交通事故に絡んだりしたら、とても危ないです。アメリカ健康保険産業は人を助ける為では無く、利益の為に存在が有ります。支払いが出来ないと、死にます。本当です。アメリカ人の自己破産の６０％は医学的な緊急事態の原因です。だいたいこの人達は家を失って、それで仕事を失って、次はホームレスの状態です。

I have Japanese National Health Insurance, for me it is a treasure. I am glad that I do not live under the American system. I read a letter in the Asahi Shinbun. A woman' daughter had lived in the United States for 25 years. I am assuming that the woman's husband is an American. Well, the woman became sick, and was hospitalized for three days. The cost was 1.8 million yen. It seems that there was no insurance, or the insurance company refused to pay. The woman paid for her daughter, if she had not, they would go homeless.

私は日本国民健康保険が有ります。これは宝物です。アメリカのシステムで生活していないでよかったです。先日、朝日新聞の声欄で読者の手紙を読みました。有る女性の娘さんは２５年間アメリカで生活をしています。その娘さんの旦那さんはアメリカ人でしょう。その娘さんは病気に成って、三日間入院しました。そのコストは百八十万円でした。健康保険は無かったか、それとも保険会社が支払いを断りました。その女性の方は娘さんの為にお金を払いましたけれど、その支払いがなかったら、ホームレスに成ったでしょう。

But the woman worries what to do if her daughter gets sick again. If they stay in America, they will be homeless. And they will eventually not be able to eat. If they come back to Japan, perhaps they can all live in the parents house. But if the husband is an American, and middle aged, I probably cannot help him. You see, I do employ some foreigners. But only people who speak excellent Japanese, and who have a good attitude about Japan.

しかし、その女性の方の心配は、もしかしたら娘さんは再び病気に成るかも知れません。アメリカに残れば、ホームレスに成ります。日本に帰りましたら、親の家に住めるでしょう。しかし旦那さんはアメリカ人でしたら、中年で、私は彼をヘルプを出来ません。私は時々外人を雇用していますが、素晴しい日本語が出来る事と日本についていい態度をしていないと、利用出来ません。

Church groups and NGO's are helping out homeless and unemployed people in America, but their resources are running out. Soon, I am afraid we will have starvation in America.

NGOと教会はホームレスと失業者に手伝っていますが、そのグループの財産はまもなく消えるでしょう。その時にアメリカで餓死をしている人が増えます。

Official American figures now say that income is increasing for the top richest 1% of Americans. For the rest, it is declining or staying the same. But for 99% of the American population, the economic out look is dim.

アメリカの国の統計データで、一番金持ちアメリカ人の１％の収入は増えていると報告しています。しかし、残りのアメリカ人の収入は同じレベルそれとも落ちています。アメリカ人の９９％の人口の為に将来は暗いです。

And now we have Global Warming and Peak Oil, which are already affecting life in the United States. But of course, history challenged Americans refuse to believe in these coming disasters.

現在は温暖化と石油減らし問題はアメリカの生活に影響が出ています。しかし歴史を勉強しないアメリカ人はこの大惨事を考えていません。

In the 1960's, it was America's Golden Age, America was considered the world's best country to live in. By 2030, will America be the world's most horrible country to live in? It is looking that way.

１９６０年代はアメリカの黄金時代でしたが、アメリカは世界のベストな生活を出来ると考えられていました。２０３０年までにアメリカは世界の一番最悪な生活をする国に成りますか？そう成るかも知れません。

破産、倒産を言う事です。例えば、金魚水槽で金魚が死にます。腹を上向いて浮かびますから、"belly up"の事です。

history challenged

数年前ぐらい、"physically challenged"と言う言葉は身体が不自由のかたの為に英語で作りました。これは丁寧な言い方です。だんだん意味がもっと広く成って、何か”出来ない”と言う意味に成っています。
例えば、"mathematically challenged child"と言う意味は、数学が得意ではない子供の事です。アメリカ人はほとんど歴史を分からないから、"history challenged" です。

インド洋での給油活動 Japanese refueling activities in the Indian ocean

A new Japanese government under Prime minister Hatoyama has taken power in Japan. Yet almost every day on the television news, some American commentator is making demands that Japan continue Naval refueling activities in the Indian ocean, in support of the Afghan war.

日本では、鳩山内閣総理大臣で新しい政権が出来ています。しかし、ほとんど毎日テレビで、アメリカのコメンテーターは日本に”インド洋での給油を続け！”の様な事を要求しています。

Well let us look at the Afghan war a little more closely. What is it all about? America was attacked by the terrorist group Al Qaeda on September 11th, 2001. Al Qaeda maintained some 5,000 troops in training bases in Afghanistan, as guests of the Taliban government. While the leader of the Taliban, Mullah Omar, supported Al Qaeda, this was not true of all the Taliban.

それでは、アフガン戦争を考えましょう。この戦争は、どう言うわけですか？
２００１年９月１１日、アルカイダテロ団はアメリカで多発テロ事件を行ないました。アフガンでは、タリバン政府の”ゲスト”扱いでアルカイダが５，０００兵ぐらい訓練基地に居ました。タリバンのリーダー　オマル師はアルカイダを支持しましたが、アルカイダのアフガン内訓練基地反対のタリバンが居ました。

The Taliban ruled all but the northern parts of the country, that were controlled by the Northern Alliance. This was a group of several leaders opposed to the Taliban. Some 300 US Special Forces troops, combined with US air strikes, supported the Northern Alliance in an attack on the Taliban which began on October 7 2001. Kabul was abandoned by the Taliban on November 12th, and the rest of the country was soon taken over by the Northern Alliance.

タリバン政府は、北アフガン以外でアフガンを支配しました。このアフガン北部は北部同盟を支配しました。この北部同盟は、タリバン反対のグループでした。２００１年１０月７日、アメリカ特集部隊３００人とアメリカ空軍の空襲でこの北部同盟の攻撃をサポートしました。タリバンは２００１年１１月１２日カブール市から撤退しまして、北部同盟はその後アフガンをすべて支配しました。

The Taliban disappeared into the mountains, as did Al Qaeda. In 2002, the US began deploying conventional infantry to attack Taliban remnants in the mountains. At present, Nato forces number some 62,000, US troops and 9,000 British troops in Afghanistan, along with other national contingents. The Afghan National Army is officially some 100,000 strong. However, there are some serious doubts about the number of Afghan troops.

タリバンとアルカイダは山の方へ逃げました。２００２年で、山に隠れているタリバン残存勢力に、アメリカ軍は普通の歩兵を派遣しました。現在，アフガンでNATO軍の数はアメリカ軍は６２,０００人、英国９,０００人、その他の国の部隊も居ます。アフガン軍は公式に１００、０００人がいるのですが、その数に疑いが有ります。

This force is to fight some 15,000 Taliban guerrillas in the country, and they are losing. Kabul, a few city blocks in Kandahar and other cities, is ruled by the Afghan government. The rest of the country is dominated by the Taliban, except for a few quiet areas on the Iranian border. Until recently, the northern part of Afghanistan was free of Taliban. However it has become more difficult for NATO forces to move supplies through Pakistan, as Taliban in Pakistan keep blowing up the trucks. So a new supply route through Russia has been opened, but the Taliban have now increased their presence in the north of the country. Truly, I think official estimates of Taliban numbers are very low.

この部隊の敵は１５、０００人のタリバンゲリラですが、それでもNATO軍は負けています。カブール、カンダハルとそんな他の町の数街区は、アフガン政府が支配していません。その他のアフガン地区、イラン国境の小さな所以外は、すべてタリバン支配です。最近まで、アフガンの北部にはタリバンは居ませんでした。しかし、パキスタン経由で供給品を運びにくく成っています。何故なら、パキスタンタリバンは供給品を運ぶトラックを爆発しています。その理由の為に、NATO軍はロシア経由で新しい供給ルートを開発していますが、そのルートを攻撃する為にアフガン北部でタリバンが攻撃を始まっています。私の意見で、タリバン数の公式推計値は低すぎています。

And there are conflicting reports about the Afghan Army. I have read that it barely exists at all, it's numbers are seriously overestimated. Certainly, it has no motivation, as it does not fight at all.

アフガン政府軍の数について、相反している報告は有ります。その報告では、その軍はほとんど存在が有りません、数はとても多い様に推計しています。確かに、作戦を全然行なわないから、やる気は有りません。

How did things come to such a pass? In my opinion, America should have ceased involvement After the initial 2001 invasion. It is true that the Northern Alliance was filled with bickering, and could not form a government. So the US pushed Hamid Karzai in as President. And then sent troops to back him up. I think this was a mistake. We could have withdrawn, and even if the Taliban had retaken Kabul, we should have told them we would be back with air strikes if they ever hosted Al Qaeda or any such group again. I think that is the best we could have achieved.

どうしてこの様な状態に入りましたか？私の気持ちは、２００１年の侵略後アメリカ軍が撤退すべきでした。北部同盟は同盟内で喧嘩が有りましたし、お互いに協力をしなかったのは本当です。それで、政府をつくれませんでした。その理由の為に、アメリカはハミド　カルザイ氏を大統領で進めていました。彼を支持する為にだんだんアメリカ兵の数を増やしました。これは間違いでした。もしアメリカが撤退したら、タリバンが再びカブールを勝ちとり、アメリカからそのタリバンに、再びアルカイダみたいなテログループをサポートすると、またアメリカ軍が空襲します。それはアメリカが出来るベストな方法でしょう。

The entire Afghan war so far has been marked by uncertainty. We are not sure what we are doing there. Commanders speak of creating a secure society so that Civil Government can function and Democracy begin to exist, but they have no idea how to do it. US troops themselves constantly use massive firepower upon Afghan people, creating more guerrillas with every attack.

今までに、すべて不確実性は多いです。はっきり、どんな作戦がいいのかアメリカ人には分かりません。将軍達から安定的な社会をつくります、その安定の社会で自然的に民主主義が育ちます、でも、その安定社会をどう言うふうにつくるのか完璧に分かっていません。アメリカ軍はよくアフガン国民に対して強大射撃能力を使っています。それぞれの攻撃で、普通の国民を殺して、親戚は復讐の為に、タリバンに入ります。アメリカ軍の攻撃で、タリバンの数は増えています。

Frankly speaking, the US Armed forces are filled with many Christian Fundamentalist Chaplains and soldiers. The traditional role of Chaplains in the US military is to provide religious services, and to be a personal counselor to troops with various family and other problems. Traditionally, they were to help a US soldier irregardless of religious affiliation. In the last 20 years, the military Chaplains have come to be dominated by Christian Fundamentalists, who believe in Political Dominionism. This is philosophy of violent revolution to create Biblical societies in America and all other countries across the world. The Fundamentalist Christians regard the Moslem religion as an enemy to be destroyed. It is their wish to convert all Moslem people to their type of Christianity, and they are doing underground conversion efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

正直に言うと、アメリカ軍の中でキリスト教原理主義者の兵士と従軍牧師は多数居ます。伝統的な従軍牧師の仕事は、礼拝と個人的兵士の問題に対する人生相談でした。伝統的に兵士の宗派それとも宗教は関係なく、無差別にヘルプをしました。最近の２０年間ぐらい、政治的宗教支配を進めている原理主義従軍牧師の方は数多く成りました。政治的宗教支配の哲学は暴力的な革命で、アメリカと世界のすべての国々に聖書通りの生活の社会を創りたいです。彼達の考えでイスラム教は滅ぶべきの敵です。彼達の願いはすべてのイスラム人を原理主義キリスト教に改宗させて、イラクでもアフガンでも隠れて改宗活動をしています。

At this time, some 50% of US military Chaplains are Fundamentalists. I think this is a significant factor as to why US troops kill so many civilians. Also, private contractor companies are used in Afghanistan. Blackwater has a presence there. It's President, Erik Prince, is a Christian Fundamentalist, and has made it clear that he wishes to exterminate all Moslems from the planet Earth. His mercenary troops have killed many in Iraq.

現在、アメリカ軍従軍牧師の５０％ぐらいは原理主義者です。これはアメリカ軍がいっぱいの普通国民を数多く殺している大きな理由と思います。アフガンでも民間契約者会社、（傭兵）を利用しています。ブラックウォーター社はいます。エリック　プリンス社長は原理主義キリスト教信者ですが、イスラム人を地球から絶滅させたいとはっきり宣言しています。彼の会社の傭兵達は、イラクで普通国民をいっぱい殺しています。

The American wars in the Middle East have become religious wars of Christian versus Moslem. This can only end with America losing.

アメリカの中近東戦争は、原理主義キリスト教対イスラム教の宗教戦争に成っています。最後に、アメリカはこの戦争を負けるしか解決が有りません。

Also, the unmanned drone aircraft used in Afghanistan have killed many people. In a one year period, only 14 of some 700 people killed were actual guerrillas. And Blackwater is heavily involved in the drone program.

アフガンでアメリカ軍が利用している無人飛行機もいっぱい普通の国民を殺しています。有る一年間で、７００人を殺して、その数の中で武装勢力は１４人しかいませんでした。ブラックウォーター社も、この無人飛行機活動に深く入っています。

US troops have killed so many civilians as to make any effort for the United States to win the allegiance of the Afghan people impossible.

アメリカ軍はいっぱい普通のアフガン国民を殺しすぎて、アフガン国民の忠実を取る事は不可能に成っています。

I do not think that refueling efforts in support of the war in Afghanistan have any benefit for Japan. Countries with troops actually in Afghanistan, such as Britain and Germany, are looking for a way out. If Japan does not extend the refueling mission, I think President Obama will understand. Yes, bellicose Right wing Americans will howl, but they do not understand that the world has changed. The family of nations no longer looks at America to lead in various wars.

私の気持ちで、インド洋での給油活動は日本に利益が有りません。アフガンに軍を派遣している国，例えば英国かドイツは、撤退の道を捜しています。もし日本はインド洋での給油活動を延長しなかったら、オバマ大統領は理解するでしょう。アメリカ好戦的右派コメンテーターは叫ぶでしょう、しかしそのコメンテーターは世界が変わった事を理解していません。世界の国々は戦争でアメリカのリードを期待していません。

And just in case the new administration of PM Hatoyama does continue the refueling mission, I think it would make an excellent bargaining chip to extract American concessions on other issues.

それと、もし新しい鳩山政権はこのインド洋での給油活動を延長しましたら、アメリカから別の所で譲歩を取る為の素晴しい交渉切り札に成るでしょう。

テレビ朝日"たけしJAPAN"に出演のコメント

今日、私は自分が出演しました（９月１５日火曜日放送）、”緊急!世界サミット”たけしJAPAN”2009日本を考えるTV”の録画をゆっくり見ました。収録した時にもっと長い時間がかかりましたが、放送の時にカットされた所が有りました。

私が言った意見、アメリカ人が日本を下のように見ています、まあ、ほとんどのアメリカ人が世界のどんな国でも下に見ています。これは"American Exceptionalism"
アメリカ特別さ、の基本です。やはり、大部分のアメリカ人は他の国々と平等な気持ちを持つ事が不可能と思います。いつも、アメリカは上の国で、それ以外の国々が下の国の様な考え方をしています。

私は生まれてから、自分は自分の先祖の国、ドイツ人とスェーデン人と思っていました。アメリカは新しい国で、自分は先祖の国を大切と考えていました。その考え方で、アメリカで若い時は大変でした。アメリカ人は違う考えを許しません。これからアメリカは世界の大国の立場から落ちるでしょう。アフガン戦争は勝利不可能状態で、アメリカ経済はだんだん悪く成っています。温暖化でアメリカ全国の干ばつは深くなっていますし、これから石油減らし問題でアメリカに影響が出ます。近い将来でアメリカは生きる為に、世界の国々の援助が必要に成るでしょう。その時に、アメリカ人はまだその上国の気持ちを持ち続けているでしょうか？

番組の最後に、たけしさんは日本の“戦争しない憲法”はとても宝物と言っていました。アメリカ人は最近の６５年で、外交より戦争ばかり考えています。残念ながら、たけしさんの考えを理解出来ないでしょう。

戦後、日本とアメリカの関係　Post war relations between Japan and America

It is a little more than a week since Prime Minister to be Hatoyama Yukio's Democratic Party of Japan won a historic electoral victory in Japan. Yet, when I turn on the television news, I see many panicked American commentators forcefully saying that Japan cannot renegotiate agreements to pay to move US troops to Guam, or to build a new Marine Airbase in Nago. They are adamant that Japan continue refueling operations in the Indian ocean, even though it has no military purpose.

次期総理大臣鳩山由紀夫氏の民主党の歴史的選挙勝利から一週間ちょっとに成っています。しかし、日本でのテレビのニュースを見ると、色々なパニックに成ったアメリカのコメンテーターが出ています。普天間基地の海兵隊の名護へ移動、グアムへの海兵隊の移動、再交渉が出来ませんと強制的に言っています。軍事的意味が無くても、日本はインド洋の給油活動を絶対続かないとだめ、とコメンテーターが言っています。

They are very worried that Japan might take a less America centered foreign policy.

彼達は日本がアメリカ中心の外交政策を変えるかもしれないと心配しています。

These are people who are used to having every country in the world look to America as the single leader of the world. What they do not realize is that the world has shifted, things have changed. America is no longer the center of the world.

この人達は、アメリカは世界の国々からリーダーと見られている事に慣れています。世界は変わった、新しい時代に成ったと分かっていません。アメリカはもう世界の中心では有りません。

But let us look at a little history of Japanese and American relations since World War II. Before the war, Japan was deeply afraid of Communism as a revolutionary force, as was the United States. As I have written before, both countries collided into war over the question of who would dominate China, and came to war.

第二次世界大戦からの日本とアメリカ関係の歴史を考えましょう。戦前、日本とアメリカ合衆国は両国とも共産主義に革命的なイデオロギーを恐れました。私はこのブログで以前書いた様に、アメリカと日本は中国を支配問題でぶつかって、戦争に成りました。

America defeated Japan and occupied Japan after the war with it's armed forces. At the end of World War II, the United States began to look on the Soviet Union with increased suspicion. Soviet forces planned amphibious landings in Hokkaido in August of 1945, and wished to have an occupation zone in Japan consisting of Tohoku and Hokkaido. Mac Arthur put a stop to that, and we did not have a divided Japan like what happened in Korea and Germany.

アメリカはその戦争を勝って、日本を軍事占領しました。第二次世界大戦が終わる頃から、アメリカはソ連をだんだん疑い始めました。ソ連軍は１９４５年８月北海道に上陸作戦計画が有りました、日本で自分の軍占領ゾーン、北海道と東北、を願いました。マッカーサー将軍はその計画を止めて、日本が韓国やドイツみたいな分割国に成りませんでした。

At this time, America felt that it should control Japan, and that Japan should not be allowed to have armed forces again. There was a strong racial and religious aspect to this concept. Western people at that time still believed in the moral superiority of the White race, and the moral superiority of the Christian religion.

当時、アメリカは日本を支配するべきと思って、それと日本に再び軍を持つ事を許しませんでした。この考えは、民族と宗教の差別的な気持ちが原因でした。その時に、西洋人は白人上位とキリスト教上位を信じました。

As Japanese were neither White nor Christian, it was felt that Japan could not truly be a responsible country to be trusted with armed forces. American leaders felt that they would instead rule Japan indirectly, and help civilize Japan. This was the thinking at the time, and American society was deeply divided racially. In the armed forces, there were still separate units for Black and Asian Americans. Officers were White, it was almost impossible for a non person to be an officer.

その考えで、日本人は白人でもキリスト教でもどちらでもないから、軍隊を持つ責任感がないと思っていました。アメリカ人のリーダー達の気持ちは日本に直接支配をして、文明国を創る積もりでした。（自分達の文明をすべてと思って、自分達の文明を強制的に押し付ける事でした）その時代に、アメリカは民族的に厳しく分けました。軍隊で、黒人とアジア人は白人と別の部隊でした。士官はすべて白人でしたが、白人ではない人が士官に成る事はほとんど不可能でした。

This is the thinking behind the American written Constitution and the famous article Number 9, that Japan will never possess armed forces again.

これは、アメリカが書かれた憲法とその有名な９条の裏の哲学です。日本は再び軍隊を持ちません。

In 1950, with the backing of the Soviet Union under Stalin, North Korea invaded South Korea. The North Koreans very nearly conquered all of South Korea, it was only the quick transfer of US troops in Japan that prevented a Communist victory.

１９５０年で、ソ連のスターリンは戻って、朝鮮が韓国に侵略しました。朝鮮は韓国をほとんど征服に近い状態で、日本に居たアメリカ兵を急に韓国へ移動して、共産主義勝利を止めました。

However as Japan had no Army or Navy, moving all troops from Japan also left Japan vulnerable to attack. So Japanese armed forces, or "Self Defense Forces" were recreated. The intent was that they would not be used for aggressive purposes.

しかし、日本は陸軍とか海軍がなかったから、海外から攻撃に脆弱に成りました。それで、日本軍隊、自衛隊と言う部隊を再び創りました。攻撃型の戦争で使わないと言うつもりでした。

The Korean war ended with a return to roughly the same line as before the conflict, and the Cold War became the defining center of American foreign policy. To American thinking, a country was either pro Western, meaning pro American, or it was pro Communism, meaning leaning toward the Soviet Union or Communist China. Americans looked at the world in very clear black and white terms, with us or against us. Americans really had difficulty in imagining various differences in attitudes.

朝鮮戦争は、だいたい戦前の前線で停戦に成りました。この時から、冷戦はアメリカ外交の中心に成りました。アメリカの考えで、世界の国々は西向き、その意味はアメリカ賛成、それとも共産主義向き、その意味が、ソ連それとも共産主義中国賛成を思いました。アメリカ人は、世界の国々にはっきり白か黒か、私と一緒か、私達反対か、の様に見えました。

It was this type of thinking that got America into the Vietnam war. The forces that defeated French colonialism were Communist, so they had to be anti American. This was American thinking, they could not imagine that Ho Chi Minh was neither pro Soviet or pro Communist China, but that he choose Communism as the most powerful force to free his country from French domination. He actually admired American President Washington.

この様な考えで、アメリカはベトナム戦争に入りました。フランス植民地を壊した軍は共産主義軍でした。だから、アメリカ反対？　これは、アメリカの考え方で、ホーチミン氏がソ連か中国の方へ向いているのではなく、自分の国をフランス支配から自由にする為に共産主義の一番強い政治勢力を選びました。実は、アメリカの初代大統領ワシントン氏を称賛しました。

So America fought a ten year war in Vietnam that ultimately proved futile. America attempted to create a carbon copy of American society in Vietnam. It failed totally.

その事で、アメリカは１０年間無駄の戦争をしました。アメリカは、南ベトナムでアメリカにそっくりな社会をつくるつもりが有って、完璧に失敗しました。

During the Vietnam war, American military bases in Japan were very important in America's efforts to fight Communism in Asia.

ベトナム戦争で、日本に有ったアメリカ基地は、アメリカのアジア反共勢力にとってとても大切でした。

Japanese governments at this time were very afraid of war with Communist powers in Asia. US forces in Japan were seen as protecting Japan. This became the main pillar of the Japanese American relationship, Japan would have America be responsible for defense from external threats, while America could use bases in Japan for it's own strategic goals.

当時、日本政府はアジアの共産主義国々と戦争する事を恐れました。在日のアメリカ軍は日本を守っていると見られました。この事は、日本とアメリカの関係の中心に成りました。アメリカは日本を外からの脅迫から守って、それで、アメリカが自分達の戦略的な目標の為に利用してよかったでした。

However, since the Soviet Union never had significant amphibious forces, once the Japanese Self Defense Forces were established, a land invasion of Japan by the Soviet Union became impossible. Soviet submarines were numerous however, and a Soviet blockade of Japan was a real threat. This is why the emphasis of the Maritime Self Defense force has long been on anti submarine warfare.

ソ連は上陸作戦専用部隊を開発していないから、自衛隊を創ってからソ連の日本に侵略する事は不可能に成りました。けれど、ソ連の潜水艦はいっぱい有りましたが、ソ連が日本を海軍的に封鎖する脅迫は実際有りました。この理由の為に、日本海上自衛隊は、反潜水艦戦いを中心にしています。

By 1970, the growing power of South Korea and the continuing decline of North Korea meant that a repeat of the 1950 Northern invasion became impossible.

１９７０年ぐらい、朝鮮は滅びる坂をだんだん下がって、韓国はだんだん経済大国に成って、朝鮮が１９５０年侵略を繰り返す事が不可能に成りました。

In 1991, The Soviet Union collapsed, and all at once the major military threat to Japan vanished. The Soviets simply junked most of their submarines.

１９９１年にソ連は崩壊して、突然、日本の主要な軍事脅迫が消えました。その時のソ連潜水艦艦隊は、ほとんどごみの様に捨てられました。

Today, Russia bases a submarines force equal in numbers to the Japanese Navy in the Pacific, however, I would say that in general Japanese subs are of better quality. Add the Japanese surface Navy, even without US forces, it is no contest.

現在のロシア太平洋潜水艦艦隊は、日本潜水艦と同じぐらいの数が有りますが、私の意見で、日本の潜水艦の品質の方がいいです。日本の駆逐艦と日本潜水艦艦を両方考えると、アメリカ艦隊が無くても、日本はロシアより強いです。

However, the important point here is that despite ongoing territorial problems with the Northern Territories, Russia is no longer an enemy. Also, relations with China have improved, and China can no longer be regarded as an enemy.

しかし、大切なポイントは、北方領土問題でも、ロシアが日本と敵では有りません。それと、日本と中国の関係はよく成っていますので、現在、中国も敵と考えられません。

The North Korean military, including it's missile forces, are a joke. Personally, I do not believe that North Korea has a useable nuclear weapon.

朝鮮軍、ミサイル部隊を含めて、は冗談です。自分の気持ちで、朝鮮は利用出来る核兵器を持っていません。

Yet, in the 20 some years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the main focus of the Japanese American relationship has been defense. American forces in Japan are still set to combat a Cold War threat that no longer exists.

しかし、ソ連崩壊からたった２０年間日本とアメリカ関係の中心は、防衛でした。在日のアメリカ基地は、もう存在無いの冷戦の脅迫に戦う為に固定されています。

In the previous Bush administration, America, using Japanese bases, started two disastrous wars in the Middle East. There was absolutely no reason to invade Iraq, this is an American crime, and the result has been total disaster.

以前のアメリカブッシュ政権で、在日米軍基地を利用して、中近東に二つの災害的な戦争を始めました。イラクを侵略する理由は全然有りませんでしたが、これはアメリカの犯罪です。結果は大失敗です。

While it is true that the Taliban government of Afghanistan did host the Al Qaeda terrorist group which attacked America, thusly the initial invasion of Afghanistan is understandable. However, America then attempted to create a pro American society in Afghanistan. The results so far have been even more disastrous than Vietnam. America will never change Afghan society, the war there is impossible. And there is no longer serious danger from Al Qaeda terrorists.

アフガニスタンのタリバン政府は、アフガン国内のアルカイダテロ訓練基地を許されました。それでアルカイダがアメリカ国内多発テロ事件を行なって、最初のアフガン攻撃が理解出来ます。しかし、その攻撃後、アメリカはアフガン国内でアメリカ向きの社会を創る活動を始めました。その結果は、現在ベトナムより災害的な失敗です。アメリカはアフガン社会を変える事が不可能ですが、アフガン戦争で勝利を見つける事も不可能です。それと、アルカイダも危険では有りません。

The truth is, Al Qaeda is gone. It was primarily destroyed by international police investigations into it's world wide finances. No money, no terror operations. Other than the initial invasion of Afghanistan, which was done by US Special Forces leading local troops supported by US Air Power nothing else was necessary. The present deployment of large infantry forces has only created problems, not solutions.

正直に言うと、アルカイダも絶滅されました。基本的に、色々な国々の国際警察は、アルカイダの世界金融を調査しました。お金が無かったら、テロ事件は出来ません。最初のアフガン侵略で、アメリカ特殊部隊が反タリバンのアフガン民族をリードして、アメリカ空軍がサポートをしました。その他の部隊は必要有りませんでした。現在展開されている大きい歩兵部隊は解決に成るのでは無く、もっと深い問題の原因です。

However, to many countries in the world, Japan is seen as supporting these wars, since America uses bases in Japan to conduct them. Also, Japan sent troops to Iraq, even if they did not do much. Many countries in the world look upon Japan as an American puppy.

しかし、世界の色々の国々が日本を見ると、アメリカは戦争を行なう為に在日米軍基地を利用しますから、日本はこの戦争を支持していると考えます。それと、あまり何もしなくても、日本は自衛隊をイラクへ展開しました。色々な世界の国々は日本がアメリカの子犬と思っています。

If we look at American wars since WWII, other than the Korean war, they have almost all been disasters.

第二次世界大戦からアメリカが行なった戦争を考えると、朝鮮戦争以外はほとんど災害です。

Finally in America, we have a new government in the United States with President Obama. And now, in Japan, we have a new government in incoming Prime Minister Hatoyama.

やっと、アメリカでオバマ大統領で新しい政権が出来ました。それと、次期総理大臣鳩山氏で、日本もまもなく新しい政権も出来ます。

There are many Americans who cannot understand a world without some war to fight some where. These are the people who we can see criticizing Prime Minister to be Hatoyama.

どこかで戦う戦争が無い世界を理解出来ないアメリカ人が多いです。この人達は、次期総理大臣鳩山氏を批判しています。

I also think that in general, the leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party could not understand the changes that have happened since 1950. Yes, it is true that in 1950 Japan was in danger of being taken over by Communist forces, both from inside and from outside Japan.

私の意見で、１９５０年から自由民主党のリーダー達は色々な社会変化を理解していません。１９５０年ぐらいで、日本は国外でも国内でも共産主義から危険脅迫が有りました。

In 1950, it was only five years since Japan's defeat in WWII. At that time Japanese military forces were very weak. It was America that fought in Korea, and saved Japan. To many Liberal Democratic Party leaders, they see Japan as militarily weak, and America as Japan's saviour.

１９５０年は日本敗戦からたった５年でした。当時日本軍隊はとても弱かったです。アメリカは朝鮮半島で戦って、日本を救いました。数多くの自由民主党のリーダー達の考え方で、日本は軍事的に弱くて、アメリカは日本の救済国と考えています。

In their mindsets, they depend on America to be the Big Brother to always save Japan. But the truth is Japan is not at all weak. The Japanese military is ranked something like Number 8 among world militaries. OK, I would like to double the number of submarines from 20 to 40, I would like to increase the Parachute brigade in Narashino to a division, and train it to be more of a Special Forces unit, able to send Japanese soldiers on such small unit type of missions. But Japanese forces are quite capable.

彼達の考え方で、アメリカは救ってくれるお兄さん国で頼っています。しかし、真実は日本は弱く有りません。世界軍隊の中で、日本は８位ぐらいです。まあ、私の希望は、潜水艦の数は２０隻から４０隻にしたい、習志野の空挺団を師団に変化したいで、もっと特殊部隊に訓練をさせて、小部隊作戦日本兵を展開出来る様にしたいです。日本自衛隊はとても能力的です。

I think it is time for Japan's leaders to have a policy different that simple dependence on America.

日本のリーダー達は、ただアメリカに頼るよりも新しい政策を考える時代です。

However, one of my Interesting Sources in Washington tells me that in the private phone call between Prime Minister to be Hatoyama and President Obama, one of the subjects of conversation was on how Japan and America can cooperate on problems like Climate Change and Clean Energy.

私のワシントンに居る情報源で、次期総理大臣鳩山氏とオバマ大統領の個人電話会話で、一つの話しは、日本とアメリカが協力する所が温暖化とグリーンエネルギーです。

Japan has many small and middle companies that have some really great technology concerning Climate Change.

色々な日本の中小企業は、温暖化に対して素晴しい技術を持っています。

I think it is high time to put the Cold War behind us. The future conflict of our age will be how to survive the coming climatic and social changes that are rapidly occurring.

冷戦を忘れる時代です。これから、人間の活動、急な温暖化と温暖化の影響で社会変化を生存する時代です。

Perhaps if I may dare say so, Japan and America might be a good choice to begin rallying countries in an international scientific effort to combat Climate Change.

私の考えで、日本とアメリカの先導で温暖化に対して科学的な戦いの為に、世界の国々が集まっていい選択かも知れません。

Carbon copy　　完璧コーピーする事です。

Climate Change　　温暖化は英語でGlobal Warmingと言う意味です。しかし私は英語で書く時に、Climate Changeを利用します。何故か、温暖化で天気はだんだん極端に成っています。勿論、この意味で、冬の嵐はもっと強いです。しかし、”Warming"と言う単語を使うと冬の強い嵐が来ると雪がいっぱい降って、数多くのアメリカ人が”寒いです！温暖化は嘘だ！”この単純なアメリカ人の為に、私は英語でClimate Changeを使います。

選挙の意見　Election Thoughts

Yesterday, The DPJ thoroughly trounced the LDP, in a historic turnaround.

昨日、民主党は自由民主党に歴史的な大逆転の大勝ちをしました。

Well, why?

何故でしょう？

As a person who is very concerned with foreign affairs, I think that the LDP was totally unable to come up with any original policy. All they could think to do was follow in lockstep with American wishes. Frankly, I never had a sense of Japan having an independent foreign policy under the LDP.

私はよく外交の事を考えていますから、自由民主党は独自な外交を創らなかったと思っています。外交的に、自由民主党はただアメリカの希望通りを従うしかしませんでした。実際的に、自由民主党の支配で、日本は独立の外交を感じませんでした。

The thing is, what America does is not always necessarily good for Japan. Former President Bush’s demands that Japan cease oil development in Iran is one example. This policy greatly hurt Japan, and there was no benefit to be gained from supporting the US position in the Middle East.

実は、アメリカの活動が、日本にも必ず良い事では本当ではないです。例えば、ブッシュ大統領元政権が日本にイラン石油油田開発を辞める様に圧力をかけました。この政策は日本に傷に成って、日本はアメリカの中近東政策をすべて支持して利益がありませんでした。

The entire Bush administration policy of wars in the Middle East was a great mistake, and President Obama’s continuance of the Afghan war is a mistake.

ブッシュ元政権の中近東戦争政策は大間違いでしたし、オバマ政権のアフガン戦争を続く事も間違いです。

So should Japan simply follow along?

日本はただ続いていいですか？

Domestically speaking, as far as I could see, the LDP never had a coherent policy. At a guess, I would say that there were way too many 2nd and 3rd generation politicians in the LDP. Usually, such people grow up over protected. People around them always treat them deferentially in order to gain favor with Father. And if a problem arises, there is Father to help out. They grow up weak, unable to think or act for themselves. Of course, not all 2nd or 3rd generation people were like this, but too many LDP members were.

国内で、自由民主党は理路整然的政策が有りませんでした。推測をすると、二世と三世の政治家はとても多すぎました。だいたい、そう言う人の育ちは守りすぎです。その子の周りの人達はお父さんの世話を貰う為に、いつもその子の扱いが敬意的です。何か問題が有るといつもお父さんが手伝います。弱く育って、自分の意見も創らないし、自分で問題の解決も考えられません。

In Europe, it is, or at least it used to be customary for Princes to serve time in their countries military. Perhaps it might be a good idea for the wealthy families in Japan to have their sons and daughters do a stint in the Army or the Navy.

ヨーロッパでは、昔の王子達は自分の国の軍隊に入りました。もしかしたら、日本のお金持ちの家族は自分の息子達と娘達を陸上自衛隊とか海上自衛隊に入軍させる方がいいかも知れません。

These are just a few thoughts about yesterday’s election.

これは、昨日の選挙でいくつかの意見です。

Americanisms VI アメリカの独特な英語

今回、アメリカの政治についての英語を教えましょう！

Grassroots　Grassは芝生、とRootsはその芝生の根です。この意味は、自然的に始まる政治活動グループです。多数の人々は同じ目標で集まって協力する事です。

Astroturf 　Astroはヒューストン市のAstrodomeスポーツドームから来ました。そのドームは、アメリカで初めて人工芝生を使いました。Turfと言う意味は、芝生です。このAstrotrufと言う意味は、人工の政治活動グループ、例えば、企業がスポンサーをしているグループです。

Diehard 　直訳すると“なかなか死なない”です。諦めないと言う意味です。選挙で負けても、諦めないです。

Loony 馬鹿と言う意味です。アメリカの北部の水鳥です。変な泳ぎもやるし、変な鳴き声も有ります。それで、馬鹿な事をやっている人を　”Loony”と呼びます。

Nanny State　過保護国家です。Nannyは、ばあやです。この意味は、国が人の私生活を強く管理する事です。特に、お酒やタバコ関係の事を管理します。

Deadlocked 解決は出来ません。例えば；The subcommittee was deadlocked, and could not reach a decision.

アメリカ大統領と抵抗勢力（頑固に抵抗している馬鹿な右派）

Or perhaps I might call this entry, “The next American Civil War”

それとも、この記事のタイトルを“まもなくのアメリカ内乱”にしましょうかな？

It has now been some 8 months since the inauguration of Barack Obama as President of the United Sates of America. Many of my friends in Japan have remarked to me on how things must be better now in the US. The fact is, they are not much better. In fact, it can be said that race relations in America are quickly getting worse.

オバマ氏は、アメリカ合衆国大統領としての就任式から８ヶ月ぐらいたっています。私の日本人友達から、“オバマ大統領のおかげで、アメリカは良く成っているでしょう？”との話を聞きます。実は、あまり良く成っていません。正直に言うと、急に悪く成っています。

There is much opposition from the Diehard Loony Right. I will cover three aspects of these people.

頑固に抵抗している馬鹿な右派は、オバマ大統領のどんな事でも反対しています。これから、その三つの事を書きたいと思います。

1)The Birthers.

“生まれ違う！”族。（アメリカ生まれではない！）

These are people who claim that Barack Obama is not an American citizen, and has no right to be President. By law, the President of the United Sates must be born in the United States. These Birther people are claiming that the President was actually born in Kenya, and is an illegal alien in America.

これは、オバマ大統領がアメリカ国籍ではないと主張している人達が、彼がアメリカ大統領に成る権利が有りません。アメリカの法律で、大統領と副大統領は必ずアメリカ国民で生まれていないとダメです。カリフォルニア州シュワルツェネッガー知事は帰化をしましたから、大統領にはなれません。この“生まれ違う！”の申し立てをしている事は、オバマ大統領は実はアフリカのケニアで生まれて、アメリカで不法滞在外国人です。

They demand that the President publish his birth certificate to prove that he is an American. He has indeed produced a short form of the certificate that clearly states he was born in Hawaii. Also two newspaper announcements of his birth in Honolulu have been found, saying that he was born on August 4th 1961. The Republican governor of the State of Hawaii has declared clearly that the President was born in that state.

この“生まれ違う！”族は、オバマ大統領に“出生証明書を出せ！“と要求しています。実は，オバマ大統領は簡潔な出生証明書をネットで出した事が有ります、アメリカハワイ州で生まれたとはっきり書いています。（注：アメリカには戸籍が有りません。）それと、二つの新聞で、１９６１年８月４日にホノルル市で生まれた発表を見つけました。現在のハワイ州知事（共和党）は、”オバマ大統領はハワイ州で生まれました。”と宣言しました。

Yet 28% of the Republican Party, 11% of all Americans refuse to believe that President Obama is an American, They say such evidence was fabricated. Along with these average people are around 9 Congressmen and 1 Senator, all Republicans. If the President cannot prove to their satisfaction that he is American, they say he must be impeached. Of course, since these people ignore all rational evidence, they will never be satisfied.

しかし、共和党員の２８％、全国民の１１％は、オバマ大統領はアメリカ国民ではないと信じていますし、その証拠がすべて偽造と信じています。この普通の人々の中で、共和党下院議員９人、上院議員１人も入っています。彼らの考えで、オバマ大統領は自分達の満足まで国籍を証拠しないと、弾劾をするべきと思っています。この“生まれ違い！”族は、どんな理性的な証拠でも無視しますから、決して満足に成りません。

2)Town Hall meetings.

タウンホールミーティング（政治家が市民と対話する集会）

The American legislature is now in recess, and many Congress people and Senators are now in their home districts, and are explaining in town hall meetings what they are doing when Congress is in session.

アメリカ国会は現在休み中です。議員達はこの休みの時に自分の地区へ戻って、タウンホールミーティングで国会中の活動を説明します。

President Obama has proposed a new health care plan. This plan is being presented at these meetings, many persons of the far right have come into these meetings screaming and shouting to disrupt them. There has also been a sudden increase in death threats and threats to use guns against Representatives who vote for health care. The right wing in America is terrified that health care will turn America into a Communist country.

オバマ大統領は、新しい国民健康保険計画を提案しています。この計画はタウンホールミーティングで議員から説明されていますし、極端な保守主義のグループがこの集会に入って、叫んだり、怒ったり、目標は国民健康保険計画の説明会を崩壊する事です。この国民健康保険計画に賛成の気持ちを持っている議員にたいして銃を使う脅かし、殺す脅かしは急に増えています。アメリカの極端な保守主義の考えで、国民健康保険がアメリカで導入されましたら、アメリカはそのうちに共産主義国に成ると恐れています。

Right wing people are being provoked by inflammatory broadcasts by pundits such as Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. Former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been saying that President Obama’s health care plan will include Death Panels to decide to kill disabled and old people. The majority of these right wing American’s are rather ignorant people, and easily believe lies by such public figures.

ラッシュリンボー氏とグレンベック氏の右派マスコミコメンテーターの刺激的な放送で、極端な保守主義は盛り上がっています。元副大統領候補サラペイリン氏の宣言で、オバマ大統領の国民健康保険計画の中で、お年寄りと体不自由の人を死刑する事を決めるパネルが入っています。この極端な保守主義アメリカ人のほとんどはかなり何も分かっていないので、こう言う嘘を簡単に信じます。

3)The right wing militia.

極端な保守主義の民兵。

These are private groups not associated with the government. They are armed, basically composed of white people, and very Fundamentalist Christian. They believe that President Obama is a dictator, and that they have the right to revolt against the US government. The Oklahoma City bombing of 1995 was their biggest incident so far. It killed 168 people.

このアメリカ民兵グループは、アメリカ政府と軍隊と関係が有りません。全国のアメリカ地区で普通の人が集まって、アメリカ政府から自分達を守る武器を持っている民兵グループを創っています。武器を持っていて、ほとんど白人です。それと、ほとんど原理主義キリスト教です。彼達の考えで、オバマ大統領は、実は、独裁主義者ですが、武器を持ち、オバマ政権にたいして革命する権利が有ると信じています。１９９５年オクラホマシティーの爆弾事件は、こう言う人達がしました。今まで彼達の一番強大な作戦です。１６８人が死亡しました。

During the Bush administration, they faced a crisis of manpower for the Army and Marines fighting two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. To get the numbers necessary, standards were relaxed. Many people such as far right extremists and criminals were able to join the military.

ブッシュ政権で、イラクとアフガニスタンで戦っている陸軍と海兵隊の数はとても不十分でした。必要な軍人数は見つける為に、入軍基準をもっと優しくしました。これで、数多くの極端な保守主義者と犯罪者が軍隊に入りました。

Members of these far right groups specifically say that they joined the military to get training for the upcoming race war in America.

この極端な保守主義グループのメンバーが、アメリカの陸軍か海兵隊に入る理由は、まもなくアメリカの白人とその他の民族にたいして戦争を戦うためにとはっきり言っています。

The next Civil War in America.

まもなくアメリカ内乱

American society is changing. Many people of different races and religions are coming to America. Many American White people see this change as a reduction in their status as the top class in America. And these Americans never liked any other type of person anyway.

アメリカの社会は、現在急な大変化中です。色々な白人以外の民族、キリスト教以外の人がアメリカに入国しています。数多くの白人はこの事を見ると、アメリカで自分達の社会的地位がこれから落ちると怖がっています。正直に言うと、こう言う白人達は昔から自分達以外のグループを嫌いでした。

Political discourse in America is now filled with the threat of violence. Events happening at town hall meetings show this clearly. The Right in America is not interested in debate about President Obama’s health care plan, they want to destroy it and destroy the President. Right wing people are bringing guns to these events, it is a matter of time until someone is hurt or killed. What they want is to return to an America where White people totally control the country, and any non White, non Fundamentalist Christian is a second class citizen, or that person is forced to leave the United States.

現在、アメリカ政治討論は暴力の可能性がよく有ります。このタウンホールミーティングを見てはっきり分かります。極端な保守主義者は、オバマ大統領の国民健康保険計画を討論するつもりが有りません。その計画を崩壊して、次に、オバマ大統領を崩壊したいです。右派の人達はこのタウンホールミーティングに銃を持ち込んで、だれか怪我に成るか殺されるかは時間の問題です。この極端な保守主義の人々の希望は、白人だけがすべてアメリカのトップの地位に入って、白人以外、原理主義キリスト教以外の人々が2級国民に成るか国外追放にするか。これは彼達の夢です。

This is the policy that the Christian Fundamentalists espouse, and they are about 40% of the American population. About 25% of the American population can be considered violent Christian Fundamentalists who wish to have a cleansing revolution in America. This is to create a country that would rule America like Jesus intended in the Bible. At least this is their idea of what Jesus would do.

これは原理主義キリスト教のグループが考えている計画ですが、アメリカの人口の４割です。アメリカ人口２．５割ぐらい暴力的な原理主義キリスト教です。彼達の計画で、暴力的な革命で自分達以外の人々を一掃したいです。この革命で、聖書でイエスが書いた楽園みたいな国を創りたいです。まあ、これは本当のキリスト教では無いですけれど、原理主義者たちはこう言う事を信じています。

I think that all these movements against President Obama will eventually coalesce around the Christian political right, and then we will have Civil War in America. We are seeing the beginning of that process right now.

私の意見で、これからだんだんこのオバマ大統領反対のグループが、原理主義キリスト教運動と合体します。そう成りましたら、アメリカで内乱に入ります。現在、その行為の始まりが見えます。

爆笑問題と阿川教授の討論 How to debate American style

I was watching the Bakusho Mondai comedy duo having a discussion with a former Japanese ambassador to the United States of America, Mr. Agawa Naoyuki, who is now a professor at Keio University.

この前に、NHKテレビ『爆笑問題のニッポンの教養』で爆笑問題お笑いコンビと元駐米大使館公使阿川尚之さん、現在慶應義塾大学教授（日米関係史・米国憲法史)、の討論を見ました。

First of all, I was struck by the way Professor Agawa used an American way of speaking to destroy Ota-san’s arguments. His answers were always “That is not so.”

まず、太田さんの話を壊すのに、阿川教授はアメリカ人の様な討論のやり方を使っていて、びっくりしました。阿川教授は、常に太田さんに対して、“そんな事ない” と言う返事をよく使いました。

Professor Agawa is trained as a lawyer at Georgetown University in the United States. He is trained to conduct a debate to win his point. To the American way of thinking, it does not matter if his point is correct or not. What matters is the skill of the debater in defeating his opponent.

阿川先生はアメリカのジョージタウン大学で弁護士の勉強をしました。討論をする時に、勝つ様に訓練しています。アメリカ人の考え方で、その討論者の立場は正しいかどうかが関係有りません。その相手の立場を壊す討論者の才能が大切です。

In America, a debate is thought of as a duel. This is also true in a legal court of law. A lawyer’s client may be very guilty. However, the lawyer in America will conduct his debate in court with the intention of getting his client completely free, even if the client did actually commit the crime. In America, people realize this, and admire the verbal debate skills of a lawyer, even if his client is quite guilty.

アメリカでは、討論は決闘の様な事と考えています。裁判でこの様なやり方を行なっています。例えば，有る弁護士の訴訟依頼人は、その犯罪を本当に有罪です。しかし、その弁護士は裁判中で訴訟依頼人が完璧に無罪の解決を出る様に討論で頑張ります。アメリカ人はこれを理解して、訴訟依頼人が悪くても、その弁護士の討論才能を称賛します。

In Japan, there is no tradition of debate. In fact, there is discussion among a group, but the emphasis is on reaching group agreement about some subject. In a Japanese court room, a lawyer will try to reduce punishment for a client who is guilty, but will not generally try to get the client declared innocent.

日本では、その討論の伝統は有りません。もし有るグループでお話が有りましたら、日本の場合、みんなが同意する事は大切です。日本の裁判で、弁護士はその被告人の罰を軽く成る様に頑張りますし、だいたい、しかし、アメリカみたいに完璧の無罪解決の努力をしません。

So in the discussion between Mr. Ota and Professor Agawa, there was a huge culture gap. However, what if Mr. Ota also had training as an American lawyer? How would the debate have gone?

阿川先生と太田さんの討論は、とても広い文化的なギャップが有りました。もし、太田さんがアメリカの弁護士の討論訓練を受けた事が有ったら、その決闘な討論はどう成りましたか？

It could have gone something like this:

この様な話だったかも知れません。

Ota-san : The Americans killed the Indians in a brutal way.

太田さん：アメリカがひどい様にインディアンを虐殺しました。

Agawa-san : Many countries did that.

阿川先生：多数の国はその様な事を行なった事が有ります。

Ota-san : But Canada offered sanctuary to US Indians, such as the Nez Perce tribe under Chief Joseph.

太田さん：しかし、カナダはアメリカのインディアン民族に，例えば、ジョゼフ酋長のネズパース族を聖域を上げました。

Agawa-san : That was different.

阿川先生：それは違います。

Ota-san : The Canadians also offered sanctuary to Chief Sitting Bull of the Sioux, and many of his people. The Canadians did not mount genocidal wars against the Indians. This is different than America!

太田さん：スー族のシッティング・ブル酋長とスー民族に聖域を上げました。カナダの白人はインディアン民族にたいして大虐殺の様な戦争をしませんでした。これはアメリカと違います！

Agawa-san : ……………

阿川先生 : …………..

Ota-san : America killed people needlessly in WWII by dropping bombs on Japanese cities. The Atomic bombs were not necessary.

太田さん：アメリカが太平洋戦争で必要なくて日本の都市に空襲でいっぱい市民を殺しました。核兵器も必要有りませんでした。

Agawa-san : Japan did bad things. So the American response was understandable.

阿川先生：日本は悪い事をしたから、それを理解出来ます。

Ota-san : America wanted undisputed control of China for it’s own business purposes. Also America stills uses massive firepower, even if it harms civilians. In a 14 month period of drone aircraft attacks in Pakistan, 701 people have been killed. However, only 14 of them were guerrillas. The other 687 happened to be people who were unlucky enough to be nearby at the time. America still uses massive fire power to destroy unnecessarily.

太田さん：アメリカの目標は、自分の国の商売の為に、中国を独占的にコントロールをする事でした。現在でも、アメリカは戦争で普通の市民が死んでも、射撃能力を使っています。パキスタンでは、ある１４ヶ月間で無人飛行機の攻撃で７０１人を殺しました。しかし、１４人だけはゲリラでした。その他の６８７人の普通市民でした。アメリカは、今でも必要ない射撃能力を使っています。

Agawa-san : …………..

In the two examples above, Mr. Ota reinforced his argument with specific examples. The goal is to find specific events that the opponent does not know about.

上記の二つの会話で、太田さんは具体例で自分の立場を正しい様に見せています。討論の中で、一つの目標は討論の相手が分かっていない話を探します。

In a courtroom battle between two lawyers, if the defense attorney can find some fact that the prosecution does not know, he can make the prosecuting attorney look ignorant. And then he can cast doubt about the accusation against his client in the minds of the jury.

裁判中で２人の弁護士の決闘で、もし被告側弁護士は検察官が知らない情報を見つけたら、検察官を無知の様に見せる事が出来ます。それで、賠償員たちは、被告人にたいして検察官のお話をすべて疑うかも知れません。

The sad fact is, I think that Mr. Ota’s position in the show was basically correct. I was also surprised by Professor Agawa’s defense of American bombing of Japanese cities in WWII, including the two atomic bombs. He said that America did those things because Japan attacked first.

残念ながら、太田さんの話はほとんど正しいでした。太平洋戦争で、アメリカが日本の都市に空襲と核兵器を落とし、阿川先生が同意した事にもびっくりしました。彼の意見は、日本軍が最初に攻撃をした為に、アメリカがその攻撃をしました。

Well, it is true that Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. However, America did not pressure Japan into attacking Pearl Harbor and South East Asia for the moralistic reason of helping China. Instead, the reason was to create an economic monopoly for American business in China, and to curb Japanese power.

まあ、日本海軍は真珠湾攻撃したが本当です。しかし、アメリカは道徳的に中国を手伝いする理由の為に、日本を真珠湾と東南アジアに攻撃する様な圧力をかけた事は有りません。実は、アメリカはアメリカの会社の為に、中国で独占状態をつくり日本経済力を阻止する為に、戦争を始める様にしました。

And there was no military reason to bomb Japanese cities and kill Japanese people. The United States Navy with submarine warfare had already sunk so many Japanese merchant ships, Japanese industry was crippled. The original reason for the construction of the atomic bombs, fear that Germany was building a bomb, proved false in 1943. However construction of the American bombs was continued. It was felt that the money spent would be wasted if the construction were stopped. As for dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there was also a feeling in the American government that if the bombs were not actually used, the money invested would be wasted.

太平洋戦争で、日本の都市に空襲する軍事的な理由は有りませんでした。アメリカ海軍の潜水艦は日本の貨物船をほとんど沈めて、日本の産業機能を損ないました。アメリカが最初に核兵器を造り始めた理由は、ドイツが核兵器を造ると言う恐れでした。１９４３年にドイツの核兵器計画は全然進んでいないと分かりましたが、アメリカがそれでも核兵器工事を進めました。何故か、進めないと、投資されたお金はもったいないと言う気持ちが有りました。広島と長崎に落とした時も、“せっかく造ったのに、使わないともったいない”と言う気持ちを、アメリカ政府が考えました。

Professor Agawa also praised America’s role as a world policeman. I am very much against the concept of America as world policeman. Well, he also said that America is a wonderful country because a man who is half Black, Barack Obama, could be elected President.

阿川先生もアメリカの“世界警察官”の役を称賛しました。私はこのアメリカ“世界警察官”の事をとても反対です。それと、アメリカで黒人ハーフの人が大統領選挙に勝ったから、アメリカは素晴しい国です。

I must say here that Mr. Agawa went to elite schools, and only met with highly educated elite Americans. And Americans have an enormous talent for self-promotion. Americans are always walking around claiming to be the best nation in the world. And this is their justification for policing the world.

正直に言うと、阿川先生はエリート大学へ入学して、教育のレベルが高いアメリカ人だけとしか交流しませんでした。アメリカ人は自分を宣伝する事も上手いです。アメリカ人はいつも自分の国が世界一番素晴しい国ですから、その理由で世界警察官の事をしていいと思っています。

Actually, among less educated White people in America, there is great hatred towards President Obama, and even people praying for his death.

アメリカの教育レベルが低い白人の中で、オバマ大統領について憎悪の気持ちが強いし、オバマ大統領の死を祈っている人もいます。

Well, I do not think that America is the best nation in the world. I think it is one of several reasonable nations in the world to live in. I think to be born in America; well you can expect to have a comfortable life. But this is also true in Japan, Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. All of these areas have nice lifestyles, and I do not see particular superiority in America.

私の考えで、アメリカは世界一番素晴らしい国と思っていません。世界の中の良心的な国々の一つです。アメリカで生まれたら、楽な生活は出来るでしょう。しかし、日本、西ヨーロッパ、カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドなどで楽な生活も出来るでしょう。この国々は生活のレベルが全部いいですし、アメリカがこの国々のグループの中で、別に特別な生活レベルが有りません。

The truth is, American armed forces in other nations behave just like the armies of nations, that is badly. And I do think there is one great fault of Americans, and that is ignorance. Americans know little about other nations. And they show no desire to learn.

もう一つの真実は、アメリカ軍は他国でしている行動は他の国々と変わりませんし、やはり悪い事をしています。それで、アメリカ人の大きな欠点は、無知です。自分以外の国の事も、あんまり知りません。勉強する気持ちも有りません。

At this time in history, American ignorance is hurting America very much. Professor Agawa trained as a lawyer. Most Americans who go to university probably train as a lawyer or in Business Management. And this is why America is woefully ill equipped to understand what is happening now. America does not have enough scientists, engineers, and historians.

現在の時代に、このアメリカ人の無知はアメリカに大きな傷を与えます。阿川先生は、弁護士に成る為に勉強しました。大学に入学するアメリカ人はほとんど弁護士、それともビジネス経営を勉強します。この事で、アメリカは現在の時代を理解する事が難しいでしょう。アメリカは、科学者、技術者、歴史学者の数が足りません。

America is facing a triple blow of Climate Change, Financial Collapse, and depletion of oil supplies.

アメリカは、これから、温暖化、経済危機、石油減少の三つの災害を迎えています。

Historians, if they had been around, and if Americans respected history, would have warned Americans many years ago about the dangers of the lifestyle that America has led for the past 50 years. But Americans are not interested in history.

歴史学者がいましたら、アメリカ人が歴史の勉強をしましたら、最近５０年間のアメリカ生活のやり方が危険と注意を言っています。しかし、アメリカ人は歴史に興味が有りません。

Scientists and engineers may be able to craft a solution to Global Climate change, but Americans do not study science.

科学者と技術者が温暖化の解決も造れるかも知れないけれど、アメリカ人が科学を勉強しません。

Americans believe their values are universal, and seek to force them on the world. Americans fear a country that does not accept their values, and seek to destroy that country.

アメリカ人は自分の社会価値観が世界のどこの国でも合うと信じていますし、世界の国々に軍事で強制します。アメリカの価値観を受けたくない国をアメリカ人が恐れていますので、その国を壊す様に努力します。

President Obama is trying very hard to show Americans that we need the cooperation of the world, and that the position of America has changed. But this is going to be very difficult for most Americans to understand.

オバマ大統領は、一生懸命にアメリカ人に世界の国々との協力がこれから必要と教えようとしています。それと、アメリカの世界の立場も変わりました。しかし、ほとんどのアメリカ国民にとって、この新しい状態は理解しにくいと思います。

最近の田母神さんについて I am disappointed in Mr. Tamogami

I have previously written about Tamogami Toshio on this blog. I admired him for his comments about WWII with America. The fact is, he is correct about American pressure to start an attack, and provide reason for war.

以前、私はこのブログで田母神俊雄さんについて書きました。彼のアメリカと第二次世界大戦のコメントを称賛しました。正直に言うと、アメリカは日本に戦争する様に圧力をかけましたが、正しいです。この圧力はアメリカの為に戦争の言い訳に成りましたが、田母神さんがこの話を間違っていません。

However, I was always troubled by his remarks about the Japanese army in China. Japanese troops did kill a lot of people. The Nanking incident did happen, Japanese troops did kill many there. I think that many Western commentators use Nanking unfairly to show Japan in bad light.

しかし、私はいつも彼の論文で中国戦の日本軍活動について悩まされていました。日本軍が数多くの人を殺した事は本当です。南京事件は本当に有りましたし、日本軍がその事件でいっぱいの人を殺しました。けれど、私の考えで、たくさんの西洋人評論家は、その南京事件を日本にいじめる為利用します。

These Western commentators ignore the nasty things their own armies did, and also ignore the fact that the Japanese Imperial Army took steps to see that such an incident like Nanking would never happen again.

西洋人評論家は、自分の国の軍隊が行なった悪い事と、南京事件後で日本帝国陸軍がその様な事件を繰り返ししない様に対策を講じた事を無視しています。

And the truth is that while civilians where still killed in China, an incident on the scale of Nanking never again occurred. This cannot be said for America. In the Vietnam war, Americans painfully learned that massive artillery fires and bombings killed many civilians and created support for the guerrilla.

史実は厳しく、ひどい戦争で多数の普通の中国人国民を殺しましたが、南京事件の用な大事件は再び起こりませんでした。アメリカについて、こうは言いません。ベトナム戦争で、数多くの大砲打ちと空襲を利用する事が普通の市民をいっぱい殺して、そして、ゲリラにたいしての支持が増えると、アメリカが苦しんで勉強しました。

In Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, America has forgotten this, and in six years of war killed some hundreds of thousands of civilians needlessly.
In any case, I have always felt that warm and deep relations with China are essential for Japan’s future.

現在のイラク、アフガニスタン、パキスタンの戦争で、アメリカがこのベトナム戦争の勉強を完璧に忘れまして、何十万の普通市民を理由無しで殺しました。とにかく、私はいつも心の中で、日本が将来に中国と暖かく，深い関係をもてたらいいと思っています。

But to return to Mr. Tamogami. I am rather shocked at his behavior, and disappointed at him. I understand that he plans to hold a speech in Hiroshima in August, and that he plans to call for Japan to develop Atomic weapons.

それでは、田母神さんの事に戻りましょう。最近彼の活動で私がショックに成りました。それと、失望しています。彼はこんどの８月６日に広島で講演会を行なうつもりです。この講演会のテーマは、田母神さんの気持ちで日本が核兵器を開発するべきと思っています。

This is extremely tasteless to the people of Hiroshima, and all Japanese in general. If he truly feels Japan should develop Atomic weapons, hold the talk in Tokyo. I do not agree that Japan should develop Atomic weapons, at least for the near future. But in Tokyo, I might attend his talk to hear his reasoning.

この事は、広島市民と日本国民にとても無神経なやり方です。彼は本当に日本が核兵器を開発する必要が有ると信じているのでしたら、その講演会を東京で行なって下さい。私の考えは日本が核兵器を開発する事に同意していません。近い将来に必要有りません。しかし、その講演会が東京に有りましたら、彼の考え方を聞く為に参加するかも知れません。

I am beginning to think that he is trying to create media attention by performing outrageous incidents, and I am disappointed in him.

だんだん、田母神さんは突飛な事件を行なって、マスコミで目立つ事しか考えていないみたいです。その理由で、私は彼に失望しています。

アメリカの独特な英語フレーズを見ましょう。

Son of a gun

先月、私は「アメリカと銃の愛の関係」を英語サークルで講演しました。一人のメンバーが、Son of a gunと言う英語の意味を聞きました。このフレーズは、アメリカ独立戦争から有ります。当時、アメリカ革命軍と一緒に何人の女性が参加しました。彼女達は兵士では有りませんでした。男性兵士の奥さん、それとも、売春婦でした。英語でGunと言う意味は、拳銃、ライフル銃、機関銃、大砲、軍艦の大砲でも英語でGunと言います。

アメリカ独立戦争時代で、大砲を打つ為に、４、５人が必要でした。その女性達は、この大砲打ちの事で手伝いしました。しかし、男と女がいつも一緒に居ると、付き合って、その付き合いの結果、こどもが生まれます。当時２３０年前独立戦争の時は侮辱でしたが、現在は意味がだんだん優しく成って、今の意味は“お父さんそっくり！です。

He really stepped in it

この意味は、本当に失敗しました。

Cow pie 農家で牛の糞です。

Horse apples 農家で馬の糞です。

City shoes 農家で街へ行く為の皮靴です。

He really stepped in it と言う意味は値段が高い、綺麗な皮靴で、牛の糞に踏むと言う事です。

例えば：Bob really stepped in it. He was complaining about the boss, but the boss overheard everything.

ボブは本当に失敗しました。社長の悪口を言って、社長が全部聞こえました。

I would not date you if you were the last man on earth.

貴方が地球で最後に残っている人でも、デートしません！

アメリカの女性は、本当にこう言う失礼な事を簡単に言います。

この様なフレーズは、アメリカ英語で、“A put down”と言います。日常生活の普通の会話でも、いつもアメリカ人が、“だれが強い”　と競争しています。

アメリカと銃の愛の関係　　The American love affair with guns

Guns are a deep part of American life. The early United States was very large, and communication was only by horse, horse drawn wagon, or ship. The Federal governments military forces were small, so local militia forces provided security for their areas.

銃は、アメリカ人の生活にとても深く繋がっています。建国したばかりのアメリカは広かったですが、運送は馬、馬車、それとも船でした。アメリカ国の兵隊の数はとても少なかったし、地元の所で市民軍は安全確保をしました。

These forces were not full time soldiers. They were farmers, blacksmiths, tradesmen and craftsmen. They only functioned as a military when necessary. The rest of the time, they performed their normal professions.

この市民軍の兵士は、専門兵隊ではありませんでした。普段に、農業、鍛冶、商人、工芸家などの仕事をしました。必要の時だけに、軍人活動を行ないました。その他の時に、普段の仕事生活をしました。

These men would keep their weapons in their home. Also, America grew with up with a Western frontier. Here was the line where civilization stopped. The history of America is a constant story of people moving into the wilderness to try to start a farm.

この市民軍の兵士達は自分の家に自分の武器を持っていました。それと、アメリカは建国してから，西の辺境地帯はありました。この辺境地帯線より文明は有りませんでした。アメリカの歴史は、この荒野に普通の人は農業する為に入って来た物語です。

In these wild areas, there was no government, no towns. No rule of law. You cut the forest yourself to make a farm. There were Indians, and dangerous wild animals, like bears and cougars. People would need a gun to protect themselves.

この荒れ地で、街でも政府は有りませんでした。農業を創る為に自分で森林を切りました。インディアン、それともクーガーと熊の様な危険野生動物が居ました。自分を守る為に、銃は必要でした。
（cougarはクーガー、アメリカの野生ライオンです。現在は、ロッキー山脈と南フロリダ州に居ます。昔は、ほとんどアメリカ大陸のどこでも居ました。）

In 1791, the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution was passed.

１７９１年に、アメリカ憲法の第２改正を創りました。

その第２改正は：

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

自由国の安全によく管理された市民軍が必要ですから、国民の武器を持つ権利が法的に壊さない様に。

This 2nd Amendment is still used today by people who wish to keep guns. Roughly, 60% of Americans believe that the government should not make any regulations concerning gun ownership. About 40% of Americans believe that the US Government should have some control of over gun ownership, and a small portion of these people are in favor of a total ban on private weapon ownership.

現在、アメリカで銃を持ちたい人は、この憲法大改正を正当として使っています。だいたい、アメリカ人６割の考えで、アメリカ政府は個人銃の所有について法律を創る権利が有りません。アメリカ人４割ぐらいの考えで、アメリカ政府は個人銃の所有について何とか管理した方がいい、このグールプの数人が個人銃の所有に反対です。

America is a country that was created by revolution. And this is a very important part of gun owners belief. They believe that private weapon ownership prevents the rise of American dictators. Since private people own guns, there is always the possibility of revolution in America against a dictator.

アメリカは、革命で建国した国です。これも、個人銃の所有の考えにたいして大切な事です。銃器所有者は、個人銃の所有がアメリカで独裁主義に成らないように守られていると信じています。普通アメリカ国民は個人で銃を持っていますから、もしアメリカで独裁主義者が出て来ましたら、普通アメリカ国民が革命を行なう可能性が有ります。

When the 2nd Amendment was written, guns were very clumsy and difficult to fire. Basically, the gunpowder was poured down the barrel, and a long ramrod was used to tamp it down with a piece of paper. Then, the metal ball, usually lead, was put down the barrel and tamped down with the ramrod.

アメリカ憲法第２改正を書いた時代は、銃がとても不出来で打ちにくい武器でした。基本的に、打ち方は、黒色火薬を銃身に注ぎ込んで、紙一部入れて，長い鉄棒で詰めます。次、たま、だいたい鉛で作られた、は銃身に入れて、また鉄棒で詰めます。

Then the weapon could be fired. To fire again, the entire process would have to be repeated. Even with a well trained soldier, it would take about a minute and a half to fire one shot.

それで、銃を打つ事が可能でした。再び打つ為に、もう一度そのたまの入れ方をする必要がありました。プロの兵士でも、一発打つ為に、１分半ぐらいかかりました。

When I joined the United States Marine Corps in 1974, I trained with the M-16-A1 rifle. It had two types of magazines, one with 20 rounds, another with 30 rounds. It could fire 7 rounds a second on automatic fire, so my 20 rounds could be gone in about 3 seconds.

私が１９７４年に米軍海兵隊に入隊した時に、M−１６−A-1ライフル銃で訓練しました。弾倉は２種類有って、一つが２０銃弾入り、もう一つが３０銃弾入りでした。自動発射で一秒間で７発を打ちますから、２０発がだいたい３秒ぐらいで打つ事が出来ます。

In the early United States, guns were made by hand locally by gunsmiths. There were very few factories to make guns. From 1861 to 1865, America had a civil war. There were a total of about 3 million men in both Armies, most of them in the northern armies. This created a great need for guns, again, most gun factories arose in the northern states.

建国したばかりのアメリカで、銃は地元の鉄砲工で作られました。銃工所はあんまり有りませんでした。１８６１年から１８６５年まで、アメリカは国内で南北戦争が有りました。両軍で３百万人ぐらいの兵隊が居て、北軍の方は数多かったでした。この戦争で銃を数多く持つ必要が有りまして、またアメリカの北の半分に数多くの銃工所を造りました。

When the war was over, these factories were faced with a loss of business. So they turned to advertising, and the image of the pioneer of the Wild West Frontier, and the tough Cowboy, all with guns, was created. This image equated having a gun with being masculine.

戦争後、この銃工所の商売は消えました。それで、広告を利用して、野生西部辺境地帯のパイオニア、と強いカウボーイのイメージ、勿論、銃所持、を開発しました。この広告のイメージで、銃所持は男っぽい事に成りました。

The frontier disappeared about 1890. Yet today, there are some 200 million guns owned privately in America, a country of 300 million people. Some 75% of the people who own guns have two or more weapons. The Indians were never really that dangerous, and few Americans live in areas with wild animals.

アメリカの辺境地帯は、１８９０年ごろで無く成りました。しかし、現在、アメリカは人口が３億人で、銃の数が２百万個です。銃の所有者の中で、７５％は二つ以上を持っています。実は、昔のインディアンはそんなに危険ではありませんでした。それと、現在、アメリカで野生動物の近くに住んでいるアメリカ人は少ないです。

So why all the guns? Well, it is deep in the American psyche. In the American mind, having a gun equals masculinity, being a man. If I were in America, and I announced in some bar somewhere in America that I was against private gun ownership, I would be called weak, a coward, a homosexual, a wimp. And most likely I would get in a fight with everybody there.

それで、何故アメリカ人がこんなにいっぱいの銃を持っていますか？アメリカ人の考えで、銃を持つ事は、男らしさです。もし、私がどこかのアメリカのバーに入って、“個人銃所有反対です！”と宣言しましたら、そのバーの客から私に“臆病者！おかま！弱虫！”みたいな事を呼ばれます。それと、そのバーの皆さんと殴れ喧嘩に成るでしょう。

Guns give people a feeling of power. With a gun, even a man who is physically weak can kill a tall strong man.

銃を持つと、人は力持ちの気持ちに成ります。銃を持つと、肉体の弱い人は背が高い強い男でも殺せます。

One reason that gun owners give for private gun ownership is to defend yourself against thieves. Well, as a former Marine, I can tell you that if a thief comes, you must have your weapon ready to fire in seconds. Since we can never be sure when a thief will come, that gun must be ready to fire at all times.

銃所有者の意見で、もう一つの個人銃所有の必要な理由が、自分を泥棒から守る為です。私は元米軍兵隊ですから、もし泥棒が来て、自分の銃を数秒間で打たなければならないです。実は、いつ泥棒が来るかどうか分からないから、その銃がいつでもすぐ打てる状態である必要が有ります。

Well, you, my readers, might think that is dangerous. It is. Statistics show that 60% of all gun deaths are by people who know each other. Husband and wife fights. Parent child fights. Neighbors who know each other. Throw alcohol into that fight, and you have a deadly mess. Also, children can find guns and play with them, accidentally kill siblings or friends.

私の読者は、その様に銃を持つ事が危険と考えるかも知れません。正直に言うと、とても危険です。統計学で、アメリカで銃で亡くなった人にたいして、その６割がお互いを知っています。夫婦喧嘩、親子喧嘩、近所知り合い喧嘩の事です。その喧嘩にお酒で酔っぱらている人が居まして、めちゃくちゃに成ります。時々、子供がお父さんの銃を見つけて遊んで、兄弟でも遊び友達を間違いで撃ち殺します。

I think that American gun culture influences all aspects of American life, including foreign policy. Americans tend to look at other countries as either a friend or enemy. And if you are a friend, Americans tend to push that country to submit to the American way of doing things.

私の考えで、アメリカの銃文化は、アメリカ生活のすべて、外交関係でも、影響が有ります。アメリカ人は他の国を考えると、その国が敵か友達か、その他の考えは有りません。その友達の国でも、アメリカ人はだいたい強制的にアメリカの生活のやり方を押し付けます。

Americans are very proud of their huge military, and I think that this military is their prime instrument of foreign policy. Frankly, the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan at this moment have no other purpose than to kill people.

アメリカ人は、自分達の巨大な軍隊にとても誇りが有ります。私の意見で、そのアメリカ軍はアメリカ外交関係の中心です。正直に言うと、現在、イラク、アフガニスタン、パキスタン戦争は、ただ人を殺す以外の意味が有りません。

Truthfully, I do not believe in private gun ownership at all. I believe the only people who should have guns are the police and the military. Well, I am not a hunter, but in Japan, hunting rifles are closely monitored by the local police forces. As they should be.

心から、私は個人銃所有をすべて反対です。私の考えで、銃を持つ権利が有る人が、警察官と軍人だけです。私は狩人ではないですけど、日本では狩人の銃を警察官がよく管理しています。そうするべきです。

America is now a very different nation than it was in 1776 when the American Revolutionary war began. There are some 27 Amendments to the United States Constitution. The last was ratified in 1992. I really do think America should amend the Constitution again to prohibit private firearms. However, with the present mindset of Americans, I am afraid that it is impossible.

アメリカ独立戦争は１７７６年に始めて、現在アメリカがとても違う国です。アメリカ憲法は２７回改正をしています。一番最近の改正は１９９２年です。私の意見で、もう一つの個人銃所有禁止法を憲法に改正するべきと思います。しかし、現在のアメリカ人の心を考えると、それは不可能でしょう。

アメリカンドリームは何ですか？　　　What is the American Dream?

What is the American Dream? Stuff. Things. A big house. When I meet Americans in the US, these are the things they talk about. They show you their prize possessions. They take you on a tour of their house. They show their type of car.

アメリカンドリームは何ですか？物いっぱい集まる事。広い家を持つ事です。アメリカで人が会いましたら、彼らはこう言う事を話します。大好きな物を見せます。広い一軒家のツアーを案内します。車も見せます。

When they take you on a tour of the town, you are shown the house of the richest man in town. Rarely do they talk about their job. Oh they talk about their job in terms of how much money they make, but rarely do you find Americans who speak of their job as something they truly wanted to do with their life.

自分の街をツアーすると、ほとんどのアメリカ人はその街の一番金持ちの人の家を見せます。自分の仕事の事をあまり話題にしません。まあ、給料はいくらもらっているかの事を話すかも知れません。しかし、ほとんどのアメリカ人の場合、仕事はただお金の為、仕事の方に誇りが有りません。

When America was created, it was supposed to be different. In my mind, the original concept of America was conceived as both a place of refuge, and a place of opportunity. The idea of refuge, this is for those who faced discrimination in their home countries, or who because of war or some other problem faced difficulty, or perhaps even death.

アメリカ建国の時に、建国父達は違う予想が有ったでしょう。私の考えで、アメリカは原始的に避難所とチャンスが出来る国で創られました。避難所と言う考えは、自分の生まれた国で、戦争とかその他の理由で、人類差別とかその他の問題で、トラブルでも死の可能性が有った人の為でした。

The idea of a place of opportunity, well if in your country of birth, social restrictions prevented you from achieving anything beyond a set level of accomplishment, coming to America could change your life.

チャンスの考えは、例えば、自分の生まれた国で、社会的な条件で、自分の人生の出来る事が決められていて、アメリカへ行けば新しい人生が出来ます。
The theory was, there would be no limit set on you, the only restriction would be your own ability.

アメリカの論理は、自分の人生に、制限は自分の能力だけです。

Of course, it was never quite that idealistic in practice. The reality of America is that there is much racial prejudice, and various ethnic groups have had to fight intense struggles to achieve a level of equality. Also, success is not guaranteed. Freedom to achieve what you wish, also means freedom to fail.

勿論、実際のアメリカ生活はそんなに理想的では有りません。現実に民族差別は有りますし、平等生活に成る為に、色々なエスニックグループはアメリカの中で大変な努力をしています。もう一つ、アメリカで人が成功出来る事は約束されていません。自由と言う意味で、夢は実現するかも知れません。それとも、失敗するかも知れません。

But in general, when people immigrate to America, the first generation remembers the troubles back in the country of origin, they are grateful for the chance that America offers. However by the second or third generation, people have little or knowledge of the old country. They are full Americans. And basically, their dreams revolve around economic success, and the accumulation of material goods.

しかし、基本的に、アメリカ移民の場合、一世の方は前の国の問題をよく覚えていて、アメリカのチャンスに感謝な気持ちが有ります。二世と三世の場合、前の国の知識はあまり有りません。完璧に、アメリカ人に成りました。彼らの夢は、経済的な成功と物を集まる事です。

Somewhere around 1915, American industry became a great powerhouse. It was discovered that American factories could quickly produce all things that American people needed for life. However, unless people bought more products, the industries would collapse.

１９１５年ごろ、アメリカの産業は経済的にとても強く成りました。普通の生活で必要な物がすぐ作れる力が有ると、アメリカのビジネスリーダー達が理解しました。しかし、消費者達はまた繰り返して新しい商品を買わないと、アメリカの産業が滅びます。

So with advertising, a sense of desire for material goods was introduced into American life. And we have ended up with a lot of goods that can only be classified as junk. A good example of this was portrayed in Eddie Murphy’s movie “Coming to America” There is the scene in the house of the girl’s father, before the party. The girl’s father boasts of all the things he has, including a toy train on the bar that serves drinks.

それで、広告代理店を利用して、“生活の為に、物が必要”みたいな気持ちがアメリカ人の心に紹介されました。その結果、普通のアメリカ人の家に、がらくた物がいっぱい有ります。エディマーフィの映画“星の王子ニューヨークへ行く”にその代表的なシーンが有ります。エディマーフィを狙っている若い女性の家で、パーティが有ります。その女性のお父さんは自分の物をすべてエディにみせて、自慢しています。私は、特にバーの上で飲み物運び電車模型を笑いました。

It is a ridiculous thing. Yet Americans buy many ridiculous things to fill their houses with. And they buy them on credit, going into debt to buy a lot of junk.

はっきり、その電車はくだらない物です。しかし、アメリカ人はそのくだらないがらくた物をいっぱい買って、家にあふれさせます。勿論、その買い物は、クレジットで買って、アメリカ人はくだらないがらくた物を買う為に借金します。

Is this the true American dream, to go into debt to surround yourself with junk? At this time in history, I think yes, it is. However, the American credit type of economy is collapsing. We are entering a new age, and the only true prediction I can say is that it will be very different. Perhaps someday, there will also be a very different kind of American Dream.

これは、本当のアメリカンドリームですか？自分のがらくた物を取り囲む為に、借金をする事ですか？現在のアメリカ時代、私はそうと思います。しかし、アメリカクレジット経済はまもなく滅びます。新しい時代はこれから始まります。この新しい時代がとても違うでしょう。もしかしたら、これからアメリカンドリームも変わるかも知れません。

豚インフルエンザが発生した理由　　Where did Swine Flu come from?

Recently, Swine flu has been much in the news, as the epidemic covers the world. But where did this disease come from? Is it a natural event?

最近、世界中に豚インフルエンザ感染は広がって、ニュースの話題に成っています。しかし、この病気はどこから発生しましたか？これは自然的な事件ですか？

I do not think so. Rather, it is my belief that this is a result of American corporate farming. In the last 20 years, we have seen, in the United States, a significant increase in the number of pigs produced per year, while the number of hog farms has drastically decreased. The obvious answer here is that fewer farms are producing more pigs, for greater profit per pig.

私はそう思いません。この病気は、アメリカ大企業農業のやり方の責任と信じています。最近の２０年間アメリカで前年の生産している豚の数は増えていますし、豚農場の数は大幅に減らしています。この意味は少数の農場は数多くの豚を生産して、豚一匹当たりで利益が増えています。

This is done by economy of scale. But there are several downsides to this type of operation.

この利益は規模の経済で出来ます。しかし、この規模の経済でいくつかのマイナス面が有ります。

To create the most meat, pigs are bred for certain genetic traits. Hog reproduction is not by natural sex, but by artificial insemination. The more pigs that can be crammed into a certain physical area, the more profit that can be realized.

肉の量を大幅に生産する為に、アメリカの豚は決まっている遺伝形質に繁殖しています。豚生殖は自然セックスではなく、人工授精で行なっています。利益を増やす為に、豚小屋に出来るだけ数多くの豚を無理に詰め込んでいます。

In nature, pigs need to roam freely to create a healthy animal. Also, natural sex between different pigs creates genetic diversity, which means more healthy animals.

自然では、健康的な豚を育つ為に、広い歩き回れる所は必要です。それと、豚の自然セックスで遺伝的多様性を守ります。全体的、健康的な豚が育ちます。

So we have a massive amount of pigs, basically having the same genes, growing up in very confined quarters. Pigs are very vulnerable to infections. To counter this, their feed is filled with antibiotics to keep them healthy. Pigs grown up in such a manner face an extreme risk of being infected with a disease, which can quickly spread to all the pigs on a farm.

このアメリカの大企業農場で、数多くの同じ遺伝子の豚がとても狭い所に育っています。豚は感染に弱い動物です。この理由の為に、餌にいっぱいの抗生物質が入っています。正直に言うと、この様に育てられている豚は感染にもろいですから、黴菌が農場に入って来るとすぐ農場のすべての豚に移ります。

One more serious problem is pig feces. So many pigs living together is such confined quarters produces a lot of pig poop. Not only is this a vector for disease inside the pig farms, on large American pig farms, the amount of pig feces is too large to be disposed of . It is usually simply put in fields outside the pig barns. From here, the feces seep into the local lakes and rivers, and pollute the air. This was the case in Veracruz Mexico, where the present Swine flu began. Also, in the American State of Iowa, many fish have died in rivers near hog farms from the pollution.

もう一つの大きい問題は豚の糞です。狭い所で数多くの豚が居ると、勿論大量の豚糞が出ます。この大量の糞は病気の媒介だけではなく、大型アメリカ農場でこの大量が捨てられていません。だいたい豚小屋の外の広場に捨てられています。近くの地区の湖と川に入りますし、空気の公害に成ります。現在の感染が始まった地区、メキシコのベラクルス州でこの事が有りました。アメリカのアイオワ州で豚農場の近くにある川の魚は、いっぱい公害のせいで死んでいます。

There is a large farm run by the American corporation Smithfield Farms in Veracruz Mexico. This corporation is a pioneer of such large-scale pig farming for massive profit. The town outside the farm in Mexico has had a large incidence of respiratory disease in humans for some time before this latest attack of swine flu. Smithfield farms has previously had difficulties with disease at farms in the American state of North Carolina.

メキシコのベラクルス州に、このSmithfield Farmsと言うアメリカ大型農場企業は豚農場が有ります。この会社は、アメリカ大利益大型農場方法のパイオニアです。そのベラクルス州農場近くの街が、現在の豚インフルエンザ感染前から急に人間の呼吸器系等の病気がふえていました。Smithfield Farmsも以前アメリカ国内ノースカロライナ州で病気の問題が有りました。

So much of all American industry concentrates on creating exactly the same product for every consumer. While I think that such processes are a good thing if we are building a car or refrigerator, I think we must remember, that the meat, fish and vegetables we eat come from nature, and we cannot truly raise them by factory methods. There will be unintended consequences. And it is my belief, that the present Swine flu is one of those consequences.

ほとんどのアメリカの企業は、全消費者の為に完璧同じ商品を作る事に集中しています。冷蔵庫でも自動車でも作るに、これが理想的と思いますけれど、私達人間が食べる肉、魚、野菜、が自然的な食べ物で、工場的な生産で育てられません。破滅的で意図しない結果が出ます。私は心で、現在の豚インフルエンザはその一つの破滅的で意図しない結果だと信じています。

大相撲三月場所　The March Sumo Basho

Well, this year in Osaka we have finally got to see some Ozeki who can stand up to a Yokozuna. But it might be a good idea if the Yokozuna concerned spent more time in practice than going up to Tokyo to strut around in a fashion show.

今年の大阪場所でやっと横綱に勝つ大関が出て来ました！しかし、その話題の横綱は、ファッションショーへ行くより稽古の方にもっと頑張っていたら、もっと強かったでしょう！

But before we talk about Ozeki, there was one match that sent me into gales of laughter. That was on the 12th day, between Yoshikaze and Yamamotoyama. We got to see more of Yamamotoyama that we bargained for, when Yoshikaze pulled his Mawashi out of place. Yoshikaze, besides pulling the Mawashi, also pulled out a win. As did my hero Homasho, who beat Yamamotoyama in excellent Sumo, meeting him straight on and pushing him out.

大関を話す前に、一つの取り組みを見て私が大笑いしました。それは１０日目、嘉風と山本山でした。嘉風が山本山のまわしを引っぱりすぎて、想像も出来なかった山本山の姿を見えました。嘉風はまわしの引っぱりだけではなく、この取り組みで勝ちました。私の英雄豊真将も山本山に勝った、立ち合いで直接あたって、押し出しでした。素晴しかったです。

These matches prove that Yamamotoyama is discovering that Makuuchi is a different place than the lower ranks. Here is he up against the best of the best, and they have ways to beat great size. So Yamamotoyama is going to have learn too. In his first two Makuuchi basho he has just managed Kachi-Koshi at 8-7. He does have a surprising ability to move laterally for such a big guy, but I hope he can avoid injury. It will be interesting to see how far he can go.

この取り組みを見ると、山本山は幕内が今まで違う所で勉強に成っています。幕内の力士は一番素晴らし関取なので、大きい体の力士に勝つ方法も分かっています。これから、山本山も勉強する必要が有ります。幕内で二つの場所をして、両方もぎりぎり８−７で勝ち越しでした。そのでかい体で驚く様に横方向に動く才能が有って、しかし、怪我に気をつけた方がいいです。どこまで番付が上がるでしょうか？

In the Ozeki department, Harumafuji came away a respectable 10 wins. And he knocked off his buddy, Yokozuna Asashoryu. That just goes to show, off the ring friendships stop at the Tawara. But I don’t think Asashoryu would have it any other way, despite the embarrassment. However, I don’t think Harumafuji is really satisfied with his Sumo since promotion to Ozeki, he has yet to find his groove. But find it he will, and I am sure that he will be great Ozeki.

大関の所で、日馬富士は尊敬出来る１０勝しました。親友朝青龍にも勝ちました。やっぱり土俵に上がると友達かどうかは関係ないです。しかし、朝青龍は勿論負けて恥ずかしいが、日馬富士が優しい相撲をしたら、絶対に許しません。私の考えで、日馬富士は大関に成ってからまだ自分の相撲に満足をしていません。しかし、そのうち自分らしい相撲を再び見つけて、素晴らしい大関に成るでしょう。

Kotooshu also came away with ten wins, one of them against Asashoryu. Perhaps the arrival of Harumafuji in the Ozeki ranks has provided some much needed motivation? Well keep it up, Kotooshu!

And his stable mate Kotomitsuki is the third Ozeki who was able to throw Asashoryu to the clay. Even though Kotomitsuki only squeaked by with a Kachi-Koshi at 8-7, I think the Sumo of these Sekitori would have been great cause for celebration at Sadogatake beya.

And Kisenosato, the other great Japanese hope of the last couple of years, you get up to Sekiwake, and then only 5-10? Well, you got promoted from Komusubi on only an 8-7 record, but I gotta tell ya, you will never get to Yokozuna like this. You are going to have to pull it together, and start winning. Kakuryu is showing good steady Sumo. And here is, a brand new Komusubi. Now you all know that I really like Homasho, I have said so on TV when I appeared on “Sanma-no karakuri terebi” as a Sumo fan. Well at that time, he was Maegashira Hito. I remember he was so nervous meeting Asashoryu on the first day. He lost, and really tumbled down the Banzuke, in fact, he went through several Basho with what looked like a crisis of confidence. Then he got it together, and made it back up to Maegashira 2, but wrist injury forced him to sit out last years September Basho.

鶴竜は本当に安定した相撲をします。それで、五月場所に新小結に成っています。私の読者の皆さんは、私が豊真将のとても熱心なファンと言う事をよく分かっています。“さんまのからくりテレビ”に一度出た事が有ります。番組で豊真将を話しました。その時に豊真将は前頭一でしたが、初日に朝青龍と取り組みが有って、とても緊張していました。彼はその取り組みに負けました。ずっと番付の下まで落ちて、自信の危機にあったみたいでした。しかし、心を作り直して、前頭２まで上がりました。それから、手首の怪我で昨年９月場所を休場しました。

Now he is knocking on the door of Sanyaku at Maegashira 1. I really do think he has got his confidence back.

今、彼は前頭一で、三役の入り口にトントンしています。やっぱり自信が戻っていると思います。

It seems like I have left out two Ozeki. Kaio eked by with a 8-7 kachikoshi. Chiyotaikai, well only two wins as an Ozeki is, well it is terrible. One thing about Sumo is that a Rikishi should have dignity. Chiyotaikai, perhaps the time has come for some serious thinking about your future.

２人の大関について、まだ書いていないです。魁皇はぎりぎり８−７で勝ち越ししました。千代大海、まあ、大関として２勝だけはとてもひどいです。相撲と言うスポーツでは、やっぱり力士は威厳が必要です。千代大海は正直に言うと、これからの将来を深く考えた方がいいです。

Oh my goodness! I forgot Hakuho! 15 wins, how could I forget that! The thing I like about Hakuho is that you cannot read his face. He shows no emotion, but he comes out with excellent Sumo. He is on the way to becoming a truly great Yokozuna.

あらまあ！白鵬を忘れました！１５連勝、どう言うふうにそれを忘れるかな！私が白鵬を尊敬している事は、彼の顔の表情を読めません。感情は見せないけれど、いつもとても素晴らしい相撲をします。これから、記録的な偉い横綱に成るでしょう。

Part4 イスラエルはアメリカ外交政策をコントロールする方法 How Israel controls American foreign policy

I will now talk about the primary Israeli lobby, AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

これからメインイスラエルロビー、AIPAC, アメリカ／イスラエル公共問題委員会について書きます。

If you look at a map of Israel, you can see that it is a very small country. It has no natural resources. Israel has a very strong military, but it is completely dependent on the United States for arms and fuel. In it’s wars with Arab states, the resupply of expensive ammunition has meant the difference between victory and defeat.

イスラエルの地図を見ると、とても小さい国と言う事がよく分かります。資源は有りません。しかし、軍隊はけっこう強いですが、銃弾、砲弾、燃料などは完璧にアメリカに頼っています。アラブ諸国と戦争する時に、アメリカからの高価銃弾と砲弾再供給で、勝つか負けるかの違いでした。

So for Israel, the American/Israeli relationship is of primary importance. Maintaining a positive image of Israel is the mission of AIPAC, or the Israeli lobby as we can call it. While they do many positive things, such as sponsoring inter cultural events and so forth, they also do many negative things.

イスラエルにとって、アメリカ／イスラエル関係は最も重要です。アメリカでイスラエルのイメージを守る事は、AIPAC, それとも、イスラエルロビーの仕事です。色々の肯定的な事、例えば、文化交流イベントを行なっていますが、否定的事もしています。

They have many connections in the media and business. So if a an American Congress person voted against giving more military aid to Israel, AIPAC or some other group would give money to the Congress person’s opponent in an election. Many articles would appear in the bolgosphere or in the mainstream media, describing the Congressperson as something evil. It does not mater if the articles contain truth. This Congressperson would be certain to lose their next election.

このロビーはアメリカ企業とマスコミと縁が深いです。例えば、もしかしたら、有るアメリカ議員は国会でイスラエル軍事支援の反対に投票したら、次の選挙にAIPACそれとも他のロビーがその議員の対立候補に寄付します。ブログと普通の新聞、雑誌などにその議員の弱点を書く記事が出ます。この記事に書いてある事は本当か嘘かは関係有りません。この議員は、必ず次の選挙に負けます。

The same thing would happen to any newsperson who reported what the Israeli and American Jewish far Right would not like. For example, if Furutachi Ichiro of Hodo Station were to report on Gaza as he did, an American news channel would fire him.

アメリカのマスコミ記者でイスラエル右派を嫌いな報道をしましたら、同じ事に成ります。例えば、日本のテレビ朝日「報道ステーション」古館伊知郎さんのガザ地区戦争の様な放送をしましたら、テレビ局は彼を首か窓際族にさせます。

Well what does the Israeli Lobby do? They mount smear campaigns, they call a person Anti-Semitic. This word means someone who hates Jews. And that is why I took two posts to outline the history of Jewish people. It is very rough. Yet there are still many in Europe and America who try to deny that the holocaust happened, or that prejudice against Jews exists. So this is a very controversial subject. To be labeled as an anti Semite, or a person who hates Jews, can destroy a political or media career.

それでは、イスラエルロビーは具体的に何をしますか？批判的な人に組織的中傷を開始して、その人を反ユダヤ差別者と呼びます。この理由で、このブログに二つのポストでユダヤ人の歴史を説明しました。実は、ユダヤ人の歴史は大変でした。しかし、ヨーロッパでもアメリカでも第二次世界大戦の大虐殺は嘘です、とかユダヤ人の差別が全く有りません、そう宣言する人が現在でもいます。その為に、この話しはとても議論の分かれる問題です。アメリカでは、反ユダヤ差別者と言われると、政治家とかマスコミ関係のキャリアが終わりです。

It is in this way that the pro Right Israel lobby, and indirectly Israel itself, controls American foreign policy. If they do not like the vote of a Congressperson, they are then attacked and lose an election, or resign.

この方法で、右派イスラエルロビーと間接的に、イスラエル自身がアメリカ外交政策をコントロールしています。国会議員の投票を嫌いでしたら、その議員が落選か辞任するまで攻撃します。

There are two very recent examples of how Israel influences American policy. During the Israeli attack on Gaza, Condoleeza Rice was at that time the American Secretary of State. She was working with other diplomats at the UN to create a ceasefire for the Gaza fighting. Prime Minister Olmert, who was in office at that time, found out some about this some 20 minutes before the vote. He telephoned America, was put through to President Bush, and demanded that the vote be changed. He succeeded, America abstained from the vote and the cease fire did not happen.

最近イスラエルは、アメリカ政策をコントロールする二つの代表的な事件が有りました。イスラエルはガザ地区に攻撃する時に、コンドリーザライス氏はアメリカ合衆国国務長官でした。彼女は国連で他の国の外交官と協力して、ガザ地区戦争停戦宣言を作る努力をしました。当時イスラエルのオルメルト総理大臣は、国連投票２０分前に分かりました。オルメルト氏はアメリカブッシュ大統領に電話して、投票を変えなさい！と言う命令を出しました。成功しましたが、アメリカは投票を棄権して、停戦が出来ませんでした。

Another example is that of Chas Freeman. He was appointed as head of the National Intelligence Council by President Obama. His job would be to take all intelligence collected by all 16 American Intelligence agencies, like the CIA, FBI, Naval Intelligence, Army Intelligence, etc, and make them into one report, the NIE or National Intelligence Estimate. For the Israeli lobby, the problem with him is that he does not believe that Iran is trying to make a nuclear bomb. The last NIE stated this conclusion, that there is no evidence that Iran is making a bomb.

もう一つの事件は、チャールズフリーマン氏の事でした。彼はオバマ大統領に国家情報会議長に任命されました。彼の仕事は、アメリカのすべての１６の情報部局、例えば、CIA, FBI, 海軍情報部、陸軍情報部などの集まった情報を一つの合同レポートに作ります。これは、NIE, 国家情報評価と言います。イスラエルロビーについてフリーマン氏の問題は、彼がイランが原爆を開発中と信じていません。昨年のNIEも、この結論が有りました。イランが原爆を造っている証拠が無いと書いていました。

The present Israeli Right wing government desperately wants war with Iran. But Israel cannot do it without America helping in attacking Iran. President Bush refused to do so in his time, and President Obama is starting to open negotiations with Iran. For the Israeli’s, this is unacceptable. For them there must be war. So to prevent any intelligence report in America that might say Iran is not dangerous, the Israeli Lobby in America started a very intense smear campaign against Mr. Freeman, and he was forced to resign.

現在の右派イスラエル政権は、どうしてもイランと戦争をしたいです。しかし、アメリカはイスラエルに協力しないと、イランに攻撃する事は不可能です。ブッシュ前大統領は自分の大統領期間にその協力を断りましたし、現在オバマ大統領がイランと交渉を始めています。現在のイスラエル政府は、これを受け入れていません。彼らの意見で、イランと戦争するしか有りません。その理由の為に、アメリカで、イランは危険ではないと言う国家情報評価が再び出ないように、フリーマン氏に厳しい組織的中傷をしました。フリーマン氏は辞任しなければなりませんでした。

I think this will backfire on them though, I know that President Obama is very angry about this.

私の意見で、この活動は、イスラエルに裏目に出ると思います。オバマ大統領は、とても怒っています。

Does this matter at all for Japan? Well in 2006, America pressured Japan to give up oil field development in Iran. The reasoning was that Iran is working to develop nuclear weapons, and Japanese investment would help this. The truth is, there is no proof that Iran is working to develop nuclear weapons. All the evidence shows that Iran is developing a nuclear power program. Yet Israel wants to destroy Iran. And pro Israeli right wing lobbies in the US use American power to stop any country from investing in Iran. They could not stop China.

この事は、日本に何か関係が有りますか？２００６年、アメリカ政府が日本にイランで油田開発を辞めるように圧力をかけました。その当時の考えは、イランが核兵器を開発中なので、日本から投資する事がとても役に立ちます。正直に言うと、核兵器開発の証拠は有りません。有る証拠を見ると、イランはただ原子力発電が出来る様に開発中です。しかし、イスラエルはイランを絶滅にしたいです。アメリカ国内イスラエル右派ロビーを利用して、アメリカの力も利用して、他国がイランに投資する事も止めます。しかし、中国は止められませんでしたね。

So in America, many people fear AIPAC. Yet this is not the complete story. The true facts are, some two thirds of American Jews support a political solution in Palestine/Israel that gives justice to both peoples. And the hard line positions of AIPAC are only supported by some 10% of Jewish people in America. And many Jewish people are tired of the nasty tactics of a right wing lobbies that only a few people support. Recently, a new Jewish American lobby has appeared, one that truly supports peace in the Middle East. It is called J Street.

それでは、アメリカで多くの人がAIPACを恐れています。しかし、これがすべての話では有りません。真実は、２／３のアメリカユダヤ人は、両方のパレスチナとイスラエル人に正義的な政治解決を支持しています。AIPACの固い右派立場を支持しているアメリカユダヤ人は、一割しかいません。それと、多くのアメリカユダヤ人は、この固い右派ロビーの汚い作戦に疲れています。最近新しいアメリカユダヤ人ロビーが出来まして、このロビーが本当の中近東の平和状態を探しています。このロビーは、Jストリートと呼ばれています。

America does have a historical experience similar to Israel. When the White man first came to North America, there were many Indians there. Well we killed them; we pushed them out West until there was nowhere for them to go. However, in the 1960’s or so, some Americans came to realize that the Indians were human beings, and a great injustice had been done to them. So efforts at compensation, giving back land, or giving special legal status to tribes, or other things is being done.

アメリカは、イスラエルと似ている歴史的な経験が有ります。初めて白人がアメリカ大陸へ上陸した時に、いっぱいインディアンは住んでいました。私達はそのインディアンを殺して、だんだん大陸の西へ追い出して、もう彼らが住む所が無いまでに追い出しました。しかし、１９６０年代ごろ、いくつかのアメリカ人はインディアンが人間と理解して、彼らにひどい不正義的な事をしたと分かりました。それで、何とか援助をする努力して、例えば、土地を返して、有るインディアン部族のアメリカ国内で特別な法的地位を創りました。

Not everybody is happy here. Some White people don’t want to give Indians anything at all. Some Indians don’t think it is enough. But it is a step in the right direction. To be sure, the ratio of Indians to White Americans is much different than the ratio of Moslems to Israeli Jews. There are many more Moslems. Yet in America, we are trying to find a solution. If we can do it, so can Israel.

これで、皆はすべて満足していません。有る白人は、インディアン達にどんな援助でも反対です。有るインディアンの気持ちで足りないと思っています。しかし、私の考えでは、この援助活動は正しい方法です。確かにインディアンとアメリカ白人、それとイスラム人とイスラエルユダヤ人の割合は、全然違います。昔のパレスチナ地区でイスラム人の数が多いです。しかし、アメリカでは私達が解決を探しています。私達はこの努力を出来ましたら、イスラエル人も出来ます。

Israel has elected a new government. Prime Minister Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Lieberman are taking a very confrontational approach to their Moslem neighbors, saying things like that they will expel Israeli Arab citizens or that they will bomb Iran by themselves if America will not. Well, since Israeli aircraft would have to pass through American controlled airspace in Iraq, and I do not believe President Obama would let that happen, I do not think they can attack Iran.

イスラエルで、新しい政府は選挙に勝ちました。ネタニヤフ総理とリーバーマン外務大臣は、イスラム人に対してとても対立的な政策を行なっています。たとえば、イスラエル国内アラビア人市民を追い出すか、アメリカはしなくてもイランに自分たち勝手に空襲をするとかの事を言っています。もしイスラエルはイランに空襲をしたら、アメリカがコントロールしているイラク空域を通る必要がありますから、オバマ大統領がそれを許さないから、イラン空襲は無理と思います。

But American feelings about Israel are starting to change. Many Americans, including most Jewish Americans, were very upset by Israel’s attack on Gaza. Also, Israel’s efforts to control America foreign policy are making Americans angry. And America is in serious financial trouble. We no longer have the money to keep supporting Israel.

アメリカ人のイスラエルについての気持ちは、だんだん変わっています。ほとんどのアメリカ人、アメリカユダヤ人を含めて、イスラエルのガザ地区戦争に怒っています。それと、イスラエルのアメリカ外交政策をコントロールする努力にも怒っています。それと、現在アメリカはとても厳しい金融危機に成っています。私達は、永遠にイスラエルに援助出来ません。

I do think the present Israeli government is rather stupid. This is not a time to in crease tensions, it time to craft a solution. Otherwise, American support may disappear, and Israel will cease to exist.

私の意見では、現在のイスラエル政府の政策は、賢くないと思います。今の時代は、問題を創るのではなく、解決するべきです。そうしないと、アメリカの援助は消える可能性は高いし、イスラエルも消えます。

Note: イスラム教信者にたいして、日本語でイスラム人を使っています。しかし、英語で、Islamistと言いましたら、何かテロみたいの意味に成りますから，英語でMoslemの単語の方を使った方がいいです。

Part 3 アメリカがイスラエルを支持する方法。How America supports Israel

Now we have come up to the time that Israel was established. Americans generally took a very positive view of Israel. The Israeli settlers were often portrayed as heroes in the media, struggling to establish a nation. To Americans, this reminded them of the establishment of America, and the pioneer spirit.

それでは、イスラエルが建国に時に来ました。基本的に、アメリカ人はイスラエルについて肯定的な気持ちを持っています。イスラエル定住者は、マスコミで新しい国を創る動力をしている英雄として見せられていました。アメリカ人はそのイスラエル人を見て、自分達のアメリカ建国とパイオニア精神を思い出しました。

There was one complication however. There were already people living in Palestine. Some Jews had always lived in the area since Roman times, but since then the majority population had always been Moslem Arab. In the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, the majority population has always been Moslem Arab, even today.

しかし、一つの複雑な問題が有りました。パレスチナ地区で昔から住んでいる人達が居ました。古代ローマ帝国から数人のユダヤ人はまだ残っていましたけれど、ほとんどの人口はイスラム教のアラビア人でした。ヨルダン川と地中海の間に住んでいる人口は、いつも大多数がイスラム教の人達でした。現在もそうです。

From the time of the first colonization by White people in North America, some part of the American population has been Jewish. And some of these Jewish people were able to become quite wealthy. Such Jewish families were able to provide financial help for the new Jewish State. Also, Jewish people often worked in the US government, or the American media. In these positions, they were able to help create a sympathetic feeling for Israel in the United States.

北米大陸は初めて白人植民地に成ったから、ユダヤ人がその人口の一部でした。それと、そのユダヤ人の中から一部の人が大金持ちに成りました。そのアメリカ社会の偉いユダヤ人家族は新しいユダヤ人の国、イスラエルに、金融的援助しました。それと、ユダヤ人はたまにアメリカ政府でもマスコミでも仕事が有りました。この立場から、アメリカの中でイスラエル向きに同情な気持ちを創る事が出来ました。

As for Arabs or Moslem people in general, until the last recently, there had been almost no Moslems living in the United States at all. At this time, there are very few Moslems who have high positions in American society. Most Moslems in America today tend to be working class.

アラビア人とかイスラム教の人について、最近までアメリカ合衆国で住んでいるモズレム人（イスラム教の信者）は居ませんでした。現在、アメリカ社会で偉い立場を持っているモズレム人が少ないです。ほとんどのモズレム人は労働者クラスです。

In my last two blog posts, I have described how Christians persecuted Jews in history. Yet for 2,000 years, Christians and Jews had lived together, even if it was not always so amicable. But Moslems were from a different world. In the year 732 at the battle of Tours in southern France, and in 1529 at the siege of Vienna, Moslem invasion of Europe were defeated, and Christianity saved.

この前のポストで、どう言うふうに西洋の歴史でキリスト教信者がユダヤ人を迫害しましたかを書きました。しかし、いつもそんなに友好的ではなくても、キリスト教信者とユダヤ人が隣同士で生活をしました。しかし、モズレム人は違う世界の人達でした。７３２年南フランスツールの戦いと１５２９年ウィーン包囲攻撃で、モズレム人のヨーロッパ侵略は負けて、キリスト教は救われました。

Very few Europeans traveled to Moslem lands, and even fewer Moslems went to Christian countries. Trade, if it existed at all, was negligible. So until the present day, Jewish and Christian people had existed together, while Moslems were viewed as strange and threatening. It was thus very easy for pro Israeli organizations in America to create a sympathetic image of Israel in America.

イスラム教国へ旅したヨーロッパ人は少なかったです。逆に、イスラム国からキリスト教国へ旅した人は、もっと少なかったでした。それでは、現在までにキリスト教信者とユダヤ人はお互いの共存経験が有って、イスラム人の方がキリスト教信者の立場から不思議と怖いと見られています。これでイスラエル人の右派グループはアメリカでイスラエル同情気を創る事が簡単でした。

So from the time that Israeli settlers first came to Israel in the late 1890’s, and until the present day, the Israeli people have always been in some kind of combat with the Moslem people who lived there. The greatest help for the settlers was Jewish people living in Europe and the United States, who provided financing. Once Israel became a country, the primary backer became the United States, which provided financial and military aid. This aid is vital to the State of Israel, without it, Israel will cease to exist.

１８９０年代から今まで、イスラエル定住者はパレスチナのモズレム人たちと戦い中です。イスラエル定住者に役に立ったのは、金融援助をしたアメリカとヨーロッパのユダヤ人でした。イスラエル建国後、基本的に金融と軍事援助はアメリカ合衆国です。イスラエルの為に、この援助は生命維持的に必要です。

While the Palestinian people receive some financial aid from Arab nations, any serious aid or military help is blocked by the United States and Israel. Any Moslem in America who provides money to a charity to help Palestinian people is in danger of arrest by the American government, the charge would be helping terrorism. This is because, particularly under the Bush administration, most Moslem charity agencies, NGO’s and so forth were classified as terrorist organizations.

パレスチナ人はアラブ国々から金融援助を少し貰っていますが、ほとんどの金融と、勿論、軍事援助はイスラエルとアメリカで止められています。アメリカでは、モズレム人はパレスチナ人援助の為にチャリティとかNGOに寄付すると、国際テロ行為の手伝いで逮捕の可能性が有ります。ブッシュ政権で、ほとんどのイスラムチャリティグループは、勝手にテロ行為と決められました。
