Its kind of what I do. And since there is no awesome, robot fighting movie for me to compare NFL players to this year, I'm going to settle for setting my target on someone else.

I'm going to risk a "disappearance" here, and call out Roger Goodell AND his predecessor Paul Tagliabue. For both have spotted problems with the NFL and will likely do...jack.

Earlier this week, Goodell took issue with a fact that has been known for several years. Rookies are overpaid. This angers the Rog. He's also angered that toast is warm, the sky is blue (he prefers fuschia), and how DARE his swimming pool get him wet when he enters it.

Rookies are overpaid. Everyone know it. If not under orders from their agents, I would imagine some rookies themselves would say they get a lot of cash, considering they have yet to be tested on this side of the vast gap between college and pro ball.

Does Goodell's proclamation remind you of anything? Perhaps, it should. When the Vikings were in the process of stealing Steve Hutchinson, Tags proclaimed that poison pills were bad for the game. And while I have argued that Hutch's defection to Minnesota is largely Ruskell's fault, I'm still curious as to why the commissioner of the NFL can say something is bad, but not stop it.

Poison pills broke new ground, and I'm guessing are not covered in the CBA (at least not provisions such as "if player X plays a certain number of games in Washington in a season, his contract is guaranteed). Tagliabue could have stepped in and said "Oh, hell no!" But he didn't. And now Hutchinson is one of the reasons why Dr. Z has picked them to win the Super Bowl, much to our delight at SeahawkBlue.

Here, Goodell, the hand-picked Golden Boy/The Law has come out and said "rookies get paid to much." The question becomes, will he do anything about it? Will he make a rookie salary cap or at least that issue a sticking point in upcoming CBA negotiations? Will he stand up to the NFLPA in this instance, or will he let teams continue to play a game of draft day roulette where a bulleted chamber sends them years of cap space hell?

The way I see it, the league runs the serious risk of allowing itself to walk down the NBA's path. Contracts in the NBA are out of whack, the salary cap ignored, and teams spend years trying to unload cap space. It turns the league into one big shitfest where really only two or three decent teams emerge from the season. And even then, one of those teams employs Pau Gasol, so how good could they actually be?

The best thing about the NFL is its competitive balance, and knowing that every year could be your year. (note: offer not valid in Detroit). The league needs to keep teams from being burdened by bad draft picks before some franchises seriously get crippled for multiple seasons.

Perhaps this declaration is a sign that Goodell wants to see at least a pay scale for rookies. But unless he acts on it, Goodell will do what Tagliabue did before him: see a problem and ignore it.Alanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781510304753054228noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-61644473171402057772008-05-08T14:01:00.000-07:002008-05-08T14:20:32.927-07:00close to easy street, but we were 'way' offWhen we named this blog, we never dreamed of untold riches and a life of leasure.

Then we read this blog piece from Danny O'Neil and realized how close we had come.

Alas, we're still stuck with our day jobs, where we get to surf the net and otherwise fuck off!

If only we were smart enough to register www.12SeahawksWay.comalbaNY Hawkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11941404089495662297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-22151584507810958402008-05-03T09:56:00.000-07:002008-05-03T09:59:51.177-07:00First pix from OTAs...

<a href="http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/football/popupV2.asp?SubID=3737&page=1>itle=Seahawks%20mini-camp%20spring%202008&pubdate=5/2/2008">See more OTA pix at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.albaNY Hawkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11941404089495662297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-28467336176888553242008-04-27T06:57:00.000-07:002008-04-27T07:18:28.527-07:00Clay Bennett reacts to day one of the NFL Draft

Hello <s>fellow</s> Washingtonians! I don't think anyone really is. We knew this day was coming, and in some circles this transaction will be seen as a good thing. I don't know if its a good thing or not. So many questions still swirl around Shaun's final two seasons in Seattle. Most notably, "What if we had manned up and signed Steve Hutchinson?"

We'll never know. Had that line stayed in tact, had Shaun stayed healthy...who knows. Its almost painful to think about how much better this team could have been, especially considering that the last two years have netted playoff wins and an epic playoff game on the road against the eventual NFC champions. That NFC divisional match-up in Chicago was both a source of great joy and frustration with Shaun especially. He was in great form, racked up over 100 yards and scored. But then, his miscommunication with Hasselbeck led to a costly fumble.

Through injuries and mediocre starts, fans and front office alike have been frustrated with Alexander the Great these past two seasons. The ugly accusation that he wasn't trying because he had gotten paid started to fly. Personally, I don't think Shaun is that kind of person. He had always avoided contact. He was always patient, waiting for the hole to develop. After his MVP season, his line was changed, and suddenly waiting for holes led to tackles in the backfield and ducking out of bounds was seen as not fighting for extra yards. Just two years after he converted every 3rd and 1 given to him, his toughness was questioned and fans overlooked the gaping hole on the left side and blamed a big contract.

In the end though, these past two years will be forgotten. When Shaun does retire, Seahawk fans will talk about his 2005 season and how he was always an overlooked back. We will remember his touchdowns and his touchdown celebrations. We will remember him taking the rushing title, and forget the fact that a year before he said he had been "stabbed in the back" over not getting a chance to earn the crown.

In time, we'll even stop asking the what if questions. But, for now all I can say is "Thanks."Alanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781510304753054228noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-33028975617949714452008-04-22T14:32:00.000-07:002008-04-22T14:33:42.188-07:00Looking for a Little Blogger Help HereIs there anyone around here that remembers how to update this background photo?albaNY Hawkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11941404089495662297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-44334105864184978552008-03-22T19:51:00.000-07:002008-03-22T19:53:59.778-07:00LOFA!He's a Seahawk for a while now. In San Diego, the Seahawks put on a furious comeback in the fourth quarter. With a second remaining, Matt Hasselbeck plunged over the goaline to force overtime against the Chargers. Ten minutes later, Rian Lindell his a 24 yard field goal to propell Seattle to a 31-28 win.

It was the second overtime win in three weeks. Seattle's 3 game winning streak brought the team to a respecatble 7-9 season, good for 2nd in the NFC West. It may not have seemed like much, but suddenly there was a buzz around the Seahawks. I personally remember this season as being the one my parents did not renew their season tickets more than anything. But still, my frustrations grew bigger after the season ended with a flurry. For once, the Seahawks, MY Seahawks, could make some noise.

The next year, at 9-7, Seattle grabbed finished 2nd again in the NFC West but made the playoffs. The next season, it was a division title. As Paul Harvey says, you know the rest of the story. 4 division titles later, a Super Bowl appearance, and a certain mastery of the NFC East in the playoffs.

Good times.

This past year, down in Arizona, the Cardinals won their last two games to reach a respectable 8-8. There were quality wins over Cleveland and Pittsburgh in the season. Three of Arizona's losses were by three points or less. They lost in overtime once.

This doesn't mean that Arizona is going to wrestle the division title away from Seattle this year. But, for the first time in a long time, the preseason buzz that will undoubtedly accompany the Cardinals will have some merit. Its been 10 years since the Cardinals had a winning record. Now, they're learning how to win, slowly becoming contenders.

Arizona still has flaws, but Seattle is not the team it was two years ago. Both teams head into the offseason with their sights set on eachother for the division title.

Whose going to blink first?Alanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781510304753054228noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-84543153341400039962008-01-25T13:20:00.000-08:002008-01-25T13:23:31.994-08:00Has Anybody Seen This Man?Don't let his mild manner fool you. Really that can be the only excuse. If Kennedy had played for an East Coast team he would have been a first ballot.

Come on...winning defensive player of the year on a 2-14 team? Do you know how incredibly good a player has to be to make the PRO BOWL on a 2-14 team. Kennedy played even better that season. He was a 3-time All-pro, eight time Pro Bowler. He made the NFL's all-decade team for the 1990s. That's despite playing for a Seattle club that had a winning record twice in his tenure (both only 9-win seasons). On top of that, Kennedy was an honorable man, playing his entire career in Seattle and never getting into trouble.

I speak for myself when I say that Kennedy is one of my all-time favorite Seahawks, and he more or less made some of those 1990s teams bearable to watch. At least he made the semifinalist list this year.

Kennedy deserves to be enshrined with the greats, his numbers and past accolades are proof of that. Why the selection committee won't allow its voters to make that decision is mind boggling.

Want Hall of Fame? A swell day for a football game isn't it.

Yes, our team appears to have this game in hand. Two quick touchdowns and a break on special teams. Yikes. I do hope the New Year has brought all of you good stuff so far and hope like hell it brings us a victory.

I feel confident, though certainly not assured, of a victory today over the ‘Skins. I think Seattle is the better team over the course of the season, though not by much. Although the ‘Skins have undoubtedly played the tougher competition the impact of schedule strength in any one matchup is widely overstated. HOW you play is far more important than WHO you play. (For those of you who follow college football, it’s the difference between Hawai’i and Kansas. They both played creampuff schedules, but the Rainbow Warriors had a number of narrow escapes while Kansas crushed their inferior opponents.) The Seahawks and ‘Skins played reasonably similar football over the course of the 2006 season based on DVOA; Seattle slightly better.

Of course, honesty demands that we acknowledge the ‘Skins are riding high and playing well right now. Unlike baseball, where momentum is only as good as the next days starting pitcher, football does have game-to-game momentum. But even in football momentum has limits. I tend to think it runs about four starts long. If a QB is living on borrowed time you’ll know it by the fifth start. Four weeks of film is enough (even for John Marshall) to break down strengths and weaknesses by situation. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that Todd Collins is THE key for the ‘Skins. Barring the completely unexpected, the ‘Skins have no answers if Collins turns back into a pumpkin today. I should say I don’t expect Collins to completely spit the bit in this game (I think he’s basically A.J. Feeley) but I do suspect he’ll come back down to earth a tad.

For Seattle, I see three major keys*, one in each area:

Defense – the four down linemen must win the matchups they can win with the offensive line. Mebane particularly must occupy two blockers. The front four must keep Collins from getting into any kind of rhythm. Blitz? Sure, but Collins has phone booth mobility. He gets rid of the ball quickly. You blitz Rex Grossman to get sacks and turnovers. You blitz a QBs like Collins or Feeley to control the pace and direction of the offense; to make the ball go where you want it to go.

Offense – we must be able to convert short yardage in the running game. To me this is THE key offensively. Hass is the unquestioned leader, the best offensive player. But, since I expect this to be a close game, the last four minutes of a game that’s clocked is won on offense not defense. We must be able to control the clock late in the game.

Special Teams – What’s up with the coverage teams? Let’s hope that Niko’s return can get them straightened out. I think Washington will struggle to move the ball if they have to play on long fields so we can’t give up anything cheap. Josh Brown and Plack (knock wood) appear to have straightened out their issues with the arrival of Jeff Robinson.

* Not to be confused with Mon-Keys. I would not be so presumptuous.albaNY Hawkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11941404089495662297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-28234023033217268592008-01-03T13:24:00.000-08:002008-01-03T10:25:07.551-08:00Chris Cooley: Richard Simmons Called, He Wants His Shorts Back*** REPOST OF AN OLD CLASSIC ***

He's doing it again... That headline is just a thinly veiled justification for posting this picture. Anyone else smell fish?

Anyhow, the Seahawks are the only NFC contender who still does not know who they'll be lining up against in the playoffs. The suddenly resurgent Redslurs are the odds on favorite to be visiting the Pacific Nortwest, since they control their own destiny, but the Viking and Saints are still breathing on life-support, hoping their HMO doesn't pull the plug this weekend.

So who are you rooting for?

All the Redskins need to do is win and they're in. Some Seahawks faithful want to have the Redskins come back to Qwest field to lay another beat-down on them like we did in 2005, but even the most casual fan knows this year's version is nowhere near as dominant as that team. The Redskins seem to be peaking just at the right moment, and Todd Collins is playing more like a top 10 draft pick than someone who hasn't started in 10 years. Besides, there is that payback thing from 2005 for extra motivation.

Speaking of payback, the Saints are the only potential opponent that we already played this season, and the last time they visited Qwest, the came away with their first win of the season in a 28-17 Bushfest (I mean Reggie, not the graphic above). For the Saints to make a return trip to Seattle, they need to Redskins and Vikings to lose. As much as I'd like the Seahawks to get a chance to avenge their only home field loss, especially since they'll be without their two most potent weapons from that contest, Reggie Bush and Boone Stutz, this would force me to pull for both the Cowboys and the Broncos, which is way too much for any Seahawk fan to bear.

Which leaves us the Vikings. Yes, the Steve Hutchinson poison-pill sleezeballs that also came into Qwest last season and knocked out Hasselbeck for more than a month. Those Vikings. I'd love for them to get a sniff of playoff hope only to have the Seahawks dismantle and destroy their hopes and dreams, and since we've already exacted our revenge against the Bears, rooting for them to knock out the Saints won't turn my stomache too badly.

So I don't care who we play in the first round, because I'm not ascared of either the Redskins, the Vikings or the Saints.

But all that being said, there 'taint no way I'm cheering for the Cowboys.albaNY Hawkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11941404089495662297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-23710511112061175222007-12-25T07:45:00.000-08:002007-12-25T08:15:55.877-08:00And The Winners Are...
Congratulations to Frank C and HLD, our two first place finishers in the Commentapalooza, who each won a Seahawks Zero Degree jacket by Reebok. As you can see, Rexx has a little more fight in him than our past few guest Enemy Bloggers, as well as the suddenly toothless Ravens. Enjoy his responses and feel free to add your own two-cents via the Smartass Comments.

1. The Seahawks just lost last week to the Carolina Panthers, a 6 win team, four of which came against NFC West opponents. The Ravens are a 4 win team, three of which have come against NFC West opponents. Do you think the Ravens have any chance at completing the sweep at Qwest field on Sunday?

REXX: Not at all. The Ravens are a team with so many issues, both on the field and the sidelines. If we couldn't beat a winless team after leading by 10 at halftime, how in the world could anyone, even a rabid Ravens fan, expect us to beat a division leader in a tough environment?

2. The Ravens have been on a steady decline since Jamal Lewis went to prison for drug dealing and Ray Lewis was key figure in the Super Bowl murders. With your team's need at the position, and his current legal issues, wouldn't Mike Vick be a perfect fit to be the next signal caller for the Purple and Black?

REXX: Puh-lease! Jamal Lewis served his time for what he did BEFORE he was a Raven, and Ray Lewis was an innocent bystander, although he made a poor choice of whom to hang around with. Hopefully, the Ravens will get a better look into their QB future, as the rookie Heisman Trophy winner from THE Ohio State University, Troy Smith, gets his first NFL start. The next two games should determine whether the Ravens QB is on the roster or awaiting them in the Draft.

3. Brian Billick was seen blowing kisses at Rodney Harrison during the heart-breaking loss to New England. What sort of non-verbal message to you think he's got planned for this game, and to which Seahawk player will it be directed?

REXX: Hey, when Harrison stepped out of line and taunted Kyle Boller and the Ravens sideline, even according to the Pats fans I've spoken with, he got what he deserved - a little Billick "love!" He's seemed to lost control of the team, and doesn't have the total respect that a coach needs from his players. He's certainly lost it with the fans and media. However, he signed a four year, $20 million extension last offseason, and with three years and $15 million still on the table, he'll definitely be on the sidelines again in 2008.

4. Speaking of that game, all the pundits were describing it as your "super bowl." Now that it is a few weeks later, and Seattle is pretty far West, is this the closest that most Raven's players will get to a "pro bowl?"

REXX: Four Ravens made the Pro Bowl this year (Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs, Jonathon Ogden). How many Seahawks made it? The Ravens went 13-3 last year, what was the Seahawks record last year? Seattle is a decent team and could put a scare into either Dallas or Green Bay if they are overlooked. However, even the Seahawk fans know the only reason you guys make it to the playoffs on a regular basis is that you play in the weakest division in the league and virtually have no competition. Try that in the AFC! Oh that's right, you were in the AFC for a while and NEVER made the playoffs! So there!

5. Ray Lewis, still the aging face of the franchise, is best known for his nickname of "Sugar" while Seattle is best know for its constant and persistent precipitation. Can you remind me what happens to sugar when it gets wet?

REXX: Ray has been in the NFL for over 10 years and no one in Baltimore has ever heard him referred to as "Sugar." (?) However, everyone slows down a little after 10 years in the toughest position in the league. At the same time, even after all the wear and tear on him, there's still not another middle linebacker in the entire NFL that I'd rather have patroling the middle. Tatupu and Peterson are very good defensive players, but neither could carry Ray's jockstrap. His heart, fire and leadership ability make him a first ballot Hall of Famer and in my humble opinion, is the greatest middle linebacker to ever lace them up!albaNY Hawkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11941404089495662297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-23453978204206753312007-12-20T19:58:00.000-08:002007-12-21T06:22:19.259-08:00Rolling Stones Cost the Seahawks the Super BowlYou have to hear it from the lips and strings of DT Craig Terrill.

Stood Up By The Stones

Don't fret about it, Craig. Mick Jagger is an overrated queer who thinks his home is visited by aliens, and even had a UFO dectector installed in his estate. Keith Richards is a walking, singing, freebasing scrotum that one day decided to snort his father's ashes instead of coke.

Yeah, no shit. He also played with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's band when they opened for Seal at the Wamu Theater in Seattle. And last season he performed the national anthem prior to the Seahawks' playoff game against the Cowboys last January.

I have to admit, I'm usually a sceptic when it comes to stars crossing over into music, where Miami Vice douchebag Don Johnson owns the title for "Worst. I can actualy listen to Terrill.

What are you waiting for? Go listen to his album. If you've had the privilege of hollering at the opponents at Qwest field, you'll get a charge out of "12th Man Scream."

http://www.myspace.com/CraigTerrill
The Daily Sun: Terrill excels at more than just footballBloofhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14291094715044836694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10616755.post-401697717097798282007-12-19T07:18:00.000-08:002007-12-19T08:06:46.898-08:00FREE STUFF! (no B.S.)<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_ET-zHrJOqz4/R2k8myCfQQI/AAAAAAAAAJE/tR55DSd_UiA/s320/seahawks_jacket.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145710686212407554" />One of the guiding principles of 12 Seahawks Street, besides crass humor and intermittent postings, is that this would forever be a non-commercial blog. While we've had offers over the years from a variety of different vendors looking to use our blog to scalp tickets or pimp their products, we've always steadfastly refused.

Until now.

While we're not going to start displaying ads on 12 Seahawks Street, we got the proverbial "offer we couldn't refuse" from the marketing department of Reebok, who is trying to get the word out about their new Zero Degree line of products.

What could be so compelling as to force Bloof and Alba to abandon their core values and bow to the pressures of Madison Ave. you ask?

FREE STUFF!

Much to our surprise, a box arrived at both of our undisclosed locations containing one Seahawks jacket (as pictured) and one Ravens knit cap. Being selfless, fan-first blogging altruists, we of course couldn't just keep this gelt for ourselves, instead deciding that we would have to give it away to our faithful readers in some contest form.

Besides, the jackets were too small for us to keep for ourselves!

So here it is. The 12 Seahawks Street Commentapalooza with two Seahawks Jackets (one L one XL) and two Ravens knit caps as the prizes. Use the comments section below as your entry form, according to this set of arbitrary rules:

1. Each entry must contain a well thought out argument as to who will win this Sunday's show-down between the Playoff-bound Seahawks and the Just-lost-to-the-winless-team Ravens. Smack talk is encouraged.

2. Your entry must include your name/screen name. If you do not wish to leave your email address with your comments, you can send a private email to albanyhawker@yahoo.com referencing your name/screen name. This is how we will contact you to let you know if you won. (Email addresses will not be shared with Reebok or any other party, and will not be used for any other purpose.)

3. Your entry (or email) should identify which Seahawks jacket you would want should you win (the L or XL) or if you'd prefer the Ravens hat.

4. The winner will be decided by me and Bloof and all decisions of the judges are final!

I know anything on the internet that seems too good to be true usually is, but this is for real. Feel free to share this link on other Seahawks / Ravens forums and encourage your fellow fans to represent.

albaNY Hawkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11941404089495662297noreply@blogger.com
