Madonna's secret hunt for 'hot' dancers

Madonna has fuelled reports she's secretly planning a series of early summer shows after announcing an open call audition for "versatile" dancers on Thursday.

The pop superstar and choreographer Jamie King are taking over Foresight Dance Studios in Los Angeles in an effort to find "hot" dancers.

The call sheet asks wannabe dancers to "bring two pictures and resumes," and asks for "strong and versatile dancers".

The release form states: "Be prepared with everything from knee pads to different shoes. Should be comfortable doing most any style of choreography. Dress: look good, hot, and able to dance."

The auditions take place throughout Thursday afternoon and into the evening.

Madonna is remaining tight-lipped about why she needs new dancers, but the call sheet suggests the dates of work will be "April 2008 - TBD."

According to a report from Us Weekly magazine the former pop singer turned wannabe country singer also can show off the moves of a stripper.

"Jessica was super social and energetic," an onlooker there told Us Weekly according to a report on the website. If there were any camera phones it shouldn't be long until we see this one on YouTube. It doesn't give the details of how skimpy Jessica was dressed but the chatty source noted that between “singing and dancing with everyone,” Simpson gave Romo a lap dance to Shakira and Wyclef Jean’s “Hips Don’t Lie.”

But for fans who feared Janet Jackson's prime had come and gone, Discipline responds with a defiant, 'Hell no.' The album finds Jackson at her finest since 2001's All For You and is packed with songs that just beg radio airplay. While "Feedback" struggled to make a connection at radio, follow up singles "Rock With U" and "LUV" promise to put the 41-year-old singer back on top where she belongs.

Never one to shy away from a question, when the topics turned blunt, Miss Jackson got downright "NASTY"... in all the right ways, of course.

What can Janet's gay fans expect from the new album, Discipline?

What's in it for the children? The kids! [Laughs] I know they love to dance—that's what it is. There's "Rock With U," a house song, which everyone's seemed to have fallen in love with—even the kids in Europe.

At what point in your career did you know you had a gay following?

I think it showed its face more to me, or maybe I realized it more, when I did "Together Again"… what album was that? That was 1997’s The Velvet Rope! Thank you very much for knowing my own work! [Laughs] I don’t ever really remembering saying, "I’ve got a pretty nice gay following," or "The children are really into me." I never thought about it.

Do you have many gay people in your inner circle?

Yeah, I do.

Who is the closest gay person to you?

His name is Gil, and we've been best friends for about 11 years. He's a creative director and one of the choreographers that I work with as well.

How does your man, Jermaine Dupri, react to the gay boys around you?

He doesn't. We're all friends. As a matter of fact, it's so cute because we all call Gil 'Keisha.' It's a pet name. Jermaine calls him 'Keisha,' too, and it startled Gil because he had never done it before. It’s just cute to see. Are you asking because Jermaine's in the hip-hop world?

Exactly.

It's just another friend with Jermaine. He loves Gil just as much as I do. I've heard people talk a little bit about that, but that doesn’t apply when it comes to Jermaine. He's very comfortable with all my friends, and they've become his friends as well.

You have a strong fan base in hip-hop, which does have a reputation of homophobia. How do you balance that with your own personal acceptance of the gay community?

I’ve never really thought about it. I just do what I do. There have been moments where I know people have spoken out about certain things that I’ve done, which skewed more toward topics that dealt with the gay community, and they disliked it—but I’m not going to stop. For instance, I think it was the Velvet Rope album, and a couple of people had a little bit to say about it. Whether it was "Free Xone" or "Tonight's the Night" because I didn’t change the lyrics, so I was singing to another girl… the song is just beautiful, I don’t want to change the lyrics, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t have an issue with that, so if they want to get all wound up in a knot, that's really their issue. I’m not going to stop being who I am and creating the music that I create.

If you could be a man for a day, what's the first thing you would do?

[Laughs] The very first thing I'd do? I can't say that—it sounds silly!

You can say it, Janet—let it out!

It's simple: I'm real curious to see what it feels like to pee.

What are your thoughts on gay marriage?

I’m all for it. Why not? It's two people that are in love with one another. What's the issue?

Who would be your celebrity girl-crush?

You know who I think is flawless? Alicia Keys. I think she's absolutely beautiful, such a sweetheart, down to earth. So maybe Alicia Keys.

I'm not sure if you’re aware of this, but there’s an Internet war between Janet and Madonna fans. I know you and Madonna had some beef in the '90s, but do you think the heat between Madonna and Janet fans has any validity?

No—I didn’t know this was going on. [Laughs] They argue, make videos and, of course, it’s mostly the gay fans.

People are curious: What are your thoughts on Madonna now?

I think she's done wonderful things. She's done great things in her career, in her life, and more power to her. I think fans will always be that way—always. They're just incredibly loyal and they love you so much that if anyone says anything remotely negative, they're there to just immediately jump on them. It'll always be that way—very loyal.

“She was very wide-eyed and attentive but she’s as addicted to buying new houses and new Mercedes as she is to the attention of the paparazzi,” said a source. “There was a moment when her mother said she could be out of money within four years and her children would still be in primary school.”

Ranking American Idol's Top Twelve

I mean, if people keep reading these things...

Well, those first intensive rounds of deadwood-clearing are done, and I'm sorry to see a few of those contestants go (Asia'h Epperson, please come back). But now we're into the meat of the American Idol season, which means it's time to start forming emotional connections and then immediately forgetting those connections a couple of weeks after the season finale. This year we've got a truly weird roster, stacked with ringers and one-trick ponies and people who might not have made it past the audition rounds during previous seasons. And here they are, ranked from favorite to least. Keep in mind that this is my list and that I'm being entirely subjective; I have demonstrated exactly zero ability to predict what America might like.

1. Jason Castro. His "Hallelujah" was one of my favorite TV moments in recent memory, right up there with Namond's cameo on The Wire last week. And I like stoners. Stoners are, by and large, good dudes. The idea that one of them has infiltrated the upper ranks of America's favorite reality show and that he might actually win the thing makes me truly happy. If we couldn't have Josiah, at least we get this fool.

2. Chikeze. Two of the three songs he's done so far have been kinda-boring lite-soul ballads, but his take on Donny Hathaway's "I Believe to My Soul" last week was some serious old-school showmanship. Plus he's quick-witted enough to trade barbs with Simon Cowell without coming off like a deluded ass, and he carries himself like an actual human being rather than a stage-mannered mannequin. Once Idol gets deeper into the goofy theme-shows, he's only going to get better; I'm eager to see what he does when the inevitable disco show rolls around.

3. Ramiele Malubay. She still hasn't displayed much capability for anything beyond weepy ballads, but she slew that Dusty Springfield song during opening week, and she's got a huge voice that's going to kill once she figures out what to do with it. I get a very distinct Jordin Sparks vibe from her, which is a good thing. And she always blubbers uncontrollably whenever anyone else gets voted off, which I guess is nice.

4. David Cook. I don't, as a rule, like all the post-grunge grunters who have flooded the show's ranks in the wake of Bo Bice. But Cook seems to be having some fun playing that position, reworking songs rather than shooting for accuracy; this week's "Hello" was passionately hammy. I also like that he's a self-described word nerd, if only because that means he's not all that wrapped up in playing the rock-dude stereotype that so many past contestants have embraced wholeheartedly.

5. Kristy Lee Cook. For whatever reason, this year's roster is jammed with semi-pro ringers with industry connections and backgrounds that the show's producers tenaciously refuse to grant more than a passing acknowledgment. Of that lot, Cook is my favorite because she fucks up the most, if that even makes sense. She makes ill-advised choices and reaches way outside her comfort zone, just like the show's non-pro contestants, and that story she told this week about pretending to be a dog and riding her pet rats around on her back was borderline-disgusting. She embarrassed herself with soul songs she couldn't handle during the first two shows, but I really liked her take on Journey's "Faithfully" this week, and she might yet hit a powerful stride if she keeps vaguely countrying up soft-rock jams like that. For some reason, it's always fun to watch country singers on this show; they seem to roll with the punches better than anyone.

6. Brooke White. She's managed to stay in her lane (Starbucks-pop, in her case) better than almost any of the other contestants, which would mean more to me if I actually liked Starbucks-pop. I still have basically no idea whether she can actually sing.

7. David Archuleta. So his "Imagine" actually was a really nice moment, Eva Cassidy arrangement-bite or no. But his other two performances were totally unmemorable, and I haven't been able to shake the impression that he's a super-advanced robot specifically programmed to shoot sincerity-rays in all directions. Also, did you see the clip of all the top twelve contestants dancing at the end of last week's show? Archuleta was hopping up and down, and he looked like a gnome or a gremlin or some shit. It was scary.

8. Syesha Mercado. On the first live show of the season, Mercado and Asia'h Epperson both sang the hell out of a couple of bluesy old classic-rock jams, and I sort of instantly loved both of them. But in the shows after that, Epperson tried wailing a couple of huge songs by a couple of uber-diva types, pushing her voice as hard and far as she possibly could, while Mercado sleepwalked through a couple of lite-soul slow-jams that I can barely remember. Epperson was voted off last night, and Mercado remains. Fuck that. Also, she makes creepy baby noises.

9. David Hernandez. I wonder if this guy will get better tips back in Phoenix after the DJ announces him as American Idol's tenth runner-up. I hope so. He seems like a nice guy, and his "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" was pretty good. But I'd feel a lot worse about making stripped-it-down jokes if his backstory wasn't the most interesting thing about him.

10. Carly Smithson. She can sing. She can sing very well. She's also a living symbol of everything lame about this season. American Idol wouldn't be the top-rated TV show in the country if it was just a singing competition and nothing more. It's supposed to be an up-from-nothing story. This chick already had a serious shot and already fucked it up. If she wins, she show compromises its own existence. A Carly Smithson win would be to American Idol what Landry murdering that guy was to Friday Night Lights.

11. Amanda Overmyer. What I said earlier about embracing and playing up rocker stereotypes? That's this chick summed up completely. She's a cartoon character, and I've spent too much time watching Rock Star: Supernova to ever waste any more brainpower paying attention to clowns like this one. Her "I Hate Myself for Loving You" was pretty good and all, but I still found myself irrationally hating it. That's probably going to keep happening until she finally disappears.

12. Michael Johns. This guy would've made my shitlist if he sang "Light My Fire" once. He sang it twice. Also, if you play tennis, you can't call yourself a jock. You just can't.

Fan blows lid on 'nude' Shania Twain calendar

A German music fan found more than he bargained for while shopping on eBay for Shania Twain collectibles.

Peter Werner got an eyeful of a racy calendar featuring his favourite artist. Someone was selling what was purported to be a calendar with photographs of Twain posing in the nude.

The photos were actually doctored so that the head of the Timmins, Ont., songstress appeared on the body of a nude model.

Werner felt the manipulated photos were degrading to Twain.

"The item was posted ... last week on eBay.de, the German branch of the worldwide online shopping and auction website," Werner said. "It has since been removed from the site."

Shakira's bra nets US$3,000 at auction

MEXICO CITY -- Ever paid $3,000 for a bra? That's what one fan forked over for one of Shakira's bras. Another admirer shelled out $14,000 for the privilege of meeting the pop sensation and receiving front-row seats at a future show in Toronto.

The two bids were among the highest offered for 40 items that Shakira donated to an Internet auction for her Bare Feet Foundation, which is building a school for impoverished children in northern Colombia.

Another popular item: a shiny lavender skirt with turquoise-and-coral beading that she wore while singing "Hips Don't Lie," which fetched more than $1,000.

The items were from Shakira's 2007 "Oral Fixation" tour.

Still up for grabs until Sunday: an electric Fender guitar and an acoustic Taylor guitar, both bearing the 31-year-old singer's autograph.

The auction has raised $76,000.

"It was a phenomenal success," Eric Gazin, president of Auction Cause, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday. "We had bidders from 10 countries."

Mariah Carey Wants You to Touch Her Body…Yes, YOU!

Hey, can we get a whoop-whoop out there for Albert Einstein? What about you nerds in the back? A little Albie love? No?? Fine. We’ll just turn to the person we always turn to when we need some mad science props: Mariah Carey.

You see, girlfriend’s got herself a new album coming out in April called E=MC2. Before you get too excited like we did, just know that there probably isn’t anything to do with Einstein’s Theory of Relativity on there.

We took a little listen to the first single, Touch My Body, so we can tell you there’s probably nothing to do with anything on there.

Okay, so maybe we haven’t had a record number of hit songs for a bunch of years in a row like Mariah Carey did, and maybe our legs aren’t insured for a billion dollars like Mariah Carey – the most we could get our legs insured for was about 50 bucks with a pop tart thrown in for the peg leg – but we still give ourselves full ridiculing rights when it comes to Mariah Carey.

And so, we commence with a review of her just released single, Touch My Body. Of course it sucks. It’s not our style. We're not actually 13-year-old girls with little parental supervision smoking behind the school with our bare midriff muffin-topping over our Baby Phat brand jeans. It's left us wondering why we even bothered to listen in the first place. Oh, yeah. The whole ridiculing thing.

We’ve kind of always carried the suspicion that Mariah Carey just wanted millions of crazed fans to rub their grimy, pervy hands all over her, but now she’s just come out and said it. And said it in a pretty studio canned way. See, the thing that was surprising about the song is the fact that Mariah Carey is a talented singer – we recognise the talent, loathe the presentation, alright? – and yet, her voice sounds like it’s received the Ashlee Simpson studio treatment where the voice is altered beyond recognition in an effort to be somewhat bearable to the listener. Maybe the production people are just doing that to all of the singers these days. Could we crank up that effect a notch with James Blunt, please? Thank you.

Anyway, sometimes a song can be saved by the lyrics, sometimes by a catchy tune, and in this case, neither. Here’s a sampling of our favorite set of lyrics. They’re so moving and deep:

Madonna on her directing debut

Madonna admitted she was nervous showing her fil

Mention the words Madonna and movie in the same sentence and a snigger invariably follows.

If you happen to be a film journalist, you might even roll your eyes.

Strange, then, that about 500 reporters hurled themselves at one small door at the Berlin Film Festival, behind which the singer gave a press conference about her directing debut, Filth and Wisdom.

Camped out since lunch time, the shouting, heaving crowd of critics were determined to see the Queen of Pop - whatever they thought of her movie.

When she arrived, looking small and dainty with the air of Marie Antoinette facing down her executioners, there was a huge round of a applause for the 49-year-old.

"You are in your 50th year, but you look 21," said one male admirer breathlessly.

"That's because you're not close enough," was the star's dry reply.

And that was Madonna during the press conference - funny, forthright and at times downright flirty.

'Struggle'

One of the singer's own songs, her 1992 single Erotica, was included on the film's soundtrack.

When asked by a Scandinavian reporter if her opinion of what was erotic had changed since her wedding, she said: "Come see me when you're married."

The film is about three flatmates struggling to find fulfilment

The conference director would often move things on if he thought a question was too personal, but I have never seen Madonna share more of herself than she did in that half hour.

And, whatever has been written about the movie, Madonna has put a lot of herself in it.

It deals with the struggle of three London flatmates - a male prostitute, a pole dancer and a pharmacy assistant - to find fulfilment.

"I relate to their struggle. I can remember it clearly when I was starting out," she said.

"Not that I was ever a pole dancer," she added hastily.

"I like unconventional. I was raised in the Mid-West and I never really felt like I belonged."

When asked what her idea of happiness had been 30 years ago and what it would be now, she praised her inquisitor for asking "a good question".

"Thirty years ago it would have been to be able to feed myself, put food on the table and find my voice in the world," she said.

"Now my idea of happiness is being grateful that I am still able to do all those things," she added.

'Butterflies'

Madonna got her film to Berlin in characteristic fashion, by writing a postcard to festival director Dieter Kosslick, asking him to show her film "if he liked it".

"I am here as a first time film-director," she announced to the conference. "That's all I am today."

Unfortunately for Madonna, she will not be treated that way.

Her celebrity may have got her a red carpet premiere, but she will be judged on that celebrity, too.

No wonder that, when she arrived at the premiere, she looked nervous.

While it is usually the press who feel trepidation at tackling Madonna, she admitted it was her turn to have "butterflies in my stomach".

"But the reception from Berlin has been more than I could ask for, " she told me.

"I'm chuffed, as they say."

Next project

On the red carpet, reporters normally get one or two questions with the superstars, but Madonna seemed willing to linger and chat - as long as it was about the film.

"I want to carry on as a film director," she said.

She revealed her next project is a documentary about Malawi which will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

Reporters camped out for hours to see the star

When asked if she was now in competition with her husband, British director Guy Ritchie, she said: "No, he's been really supportive."

She also revealed she would not be reading what the critics write about the film, choosing instead to rely on what her manager tells her.

It is not clear whether she will informed of the scathing reports that have been created by the British press.

However, some of the trade papers in Berlin have been slightly more complimentary, at least acknowledging that the male lead, Eugene Hutz, a Ukrainian pop singer, gives the movie a certain quirky charm.

Meanwhile, a straw poll of the journalists attending the screening saw them sheepishly admitting "they actually quite liked it".

Many critics, though, wish that she would just be content with music, but that is unlikely to happen.

Madonna, a chameleon with her image, is the same with her artistry.

If she wants to try film directing, just as with acting, she will have several attempts at it.

If she has proved anything over the last 25 years it is that while others give up, Madonna will carry on.

Jennifer Lopez's father confirms: She's having twins

Jennifer Lopez's father has confirmed the star is expecting twins.

The singer - who is married to singer Marc Anthony and is due to give birth this month - will follow in her aunt's footsteps by having two babies at once.

David Lopez told Escandalo TV: "Yes, twins. The thing is in my family, my sister also had twins, so it's a hereditary thing.

"I'm very proud. Jennifer has yearned to be a mother for many years."

David, who comes from Puerto Rico, has already bought traditional gifts for his unborn grandchildren.

He said: "In Puerto Rico it's custom to buy an azabache (black stone) bracelet for babies to protect them from the evil eye, it's part of our culture."

Jennifer sparked rumours she was expecting twins by purchasing matching pink and blue romper suits embroidered with the words "prince" and "princess".

It was recently revealed Jennifer and Marc are planning to call their unborn twins Max and Emme, after J.Lo's mother Guadalupe was seen buying engraved gold bracelets in New York.

Gwen Stefani and her husband Gavin Rossdale are expecting their second child, Rossdale's father confirmed to People.

LOS ANGELES - Gwen Stefani is pregnant with her second child, according to People.

Douglas Rossdale, the father of Gwen’s rocker husband Gavin, confirmed the news to People.

"They and the whole family are delighted," the elder Rossdale said.

When contacted by Access Hollywood, reps for Stefani weren’t immediately available for comment.

Stefani, 38, and Rossdale, 40, welcomed their first child, Kingston, on May 26, 2006.

The couple tied the knot in London in September 2002.

In an August 2007 interview with InStyle, Stefani called Kingston “the best thing that has ever happened to me” and said she was eager for another addition to the family.

“Obviously I’m in a race to have another, but I don’t want to do it while on tour,” Stefani said at the time. “I can’t wait to get pregnant again. It’s so fun and consuming and romantic.”

BRITNEY Spears secretly married her British paparazzo boyfriend Adnan Ghalib in Mexico, according to American reports.

The troubled star wed photographer Ghalib during a trip to Mexico on 9 January, Star magazine claims, but the marriage is illegal because Ghalib is already married.

A source told the publication: "While in Mexico, they went through a quickie marriage ceremony."

"When Britney recently accused her mother of 'sleeping with my husband', it wasn't Kevin she was talking about - it was Adnan!" the source said.

If true, the wedding was just days after Britney was first rushed to hospital, following an alarming stand-off with police at her home.

When she realised, Britney first dumped Adnan because she was so furious - but later gave him $273,000 to speed up his divorce so they could wed for real, according to Star.

"He is promising her that they'd get married again once his divorce is final," the source said.

Diana Ross and all that jazz

"Wi come fi get leg and thigh and dem gi wi chicken back," was the cry of one very vocal patron. This was the reaction by Jamaican patrons at Air Jamaica's Jazz and Blues Festival who paid about US$90 for a Diana Ross performance. You would think from all the talk about chicken parts that Ms Ross is still a member of the "soup-remes". However, the bone of contention was that Ms Ross insisted that they switch off all the big-screen television sets during her performance. According to a Jamaica Gleaner story, the promoter of the event explained, "It was at the eleventh hour that her manager said she wouldn't allow us to IMAG (In Vivo Imaging) her performance and, if any cameras were present, she would not go onstage." The crowd had no idea what was afoot and as one irate patron is reputed to have said, after Ross exited the stage to boos from disgruntled fans, "Dem shoulda throw bottle pon har, all 20,000 people inna di venue." Perhaps because it was Jazz and not a rock concert no stones were thrown either. Although the Gleaner referred to the multiple wardrobe changes of Ms Ross, there was no redress for the patrons. Ms Ross feathered her own nest to the tune of US$300,000.

Ms Ross, interestingly, is referred to as a "soul diva", something that has to be an oxymoron in the circumstances. More, as a representative of what would be called "the old school", I am a purist when it comes to some aspects of language. I still cannot come to terms with the modern usage of "diva" to refer to any female singer regardless of quality or calibre. Of course the way some dress, especially those involved in dance-hall and soca, the usage might be a typographical error with the intention being to spell "diver" (as in skin) and not "diva". As one commentator puts it, "You would not expect a 'diva' (an opera singer, usually quite temperamental) to 'dive' (a rapid descent) into the audience like a rock star."

The word "diva" came from the Latin "divina" meaning a "goddess" or "divine one" but was then applied to an operatic "prima donna" which is Latin for "first lady". So while Ms Ross is not within the classic meaning of a "diva" her behaviour is consistent with a "prima donna". According to one description, "Legendarily, these 'prima donnas' were often regarded as egotistical, unreasonable and irritable, with a rather high opinion of themselves not shared by others. Although whether they are truly more vain or more hot-tempered than other singers (or than any other people in the opera houses) is not substantiated, the term often signifies a vain, obnoxious and temperamental person who, although irritating, cannot be done without."

While I can do without Diana Ross, there are some female singers I cannot do without, especially at Carnival time. I understand the compulsion to call them all "divas" now but they were just calypsonians then. The first that I remember was Lady Iere. The "Iere" referred to one of the names for "Trinidad and Tobago" and had no connection to the Jamaican usage i.e. all right, as in "everything iere". Then came Calypso Rose from Tobago whose "Fire! Fire!" is still a classic. I can remember jumping up to "Fire! Fire!" for what seemed to be a continuous two weeks shaking my arson with other pyromaniacs generating "Heat for so". Rose was the first lady of calypso but never a "prima donna". She was always approachable, bawdy and friendly.

Singing Francine, who was originally from Barbados, finally made it to the big time and became a serious competitor to Rose with a song addressed to women who are stuck in abusive relationship telling them "put some wheels on yuh heels." She advised, "Cat does run away/dog does run away/Fowl does run away, when man treating them bad/ What happen to you?/ Woman you should run away too."

One of my favourites who never made it to the big time was Calypso Princess, sister of Prince and All Rounder, as well as Lord Blakie's partner for a long time. I first met her when she was a vendor at Kitchener's Calypso Review Tent at the aptly named Princess Building in Port of Spain. Blakie, the extremely talented but difficult Calypsonian (Sparrow once told me that Blakie is someone you should pay not to sing at, but to stay away from, your tent) finally caused the patient Princess to end the relationship with him: "I decide to leave you for sure/ Mister me eh want you no more/You pack up your things and walk out the door/So what the hell you bothering me for?/Bye-bye Blakie bye-bye."

There were a lot of other ladies who came later. Denyse Plummer gets my vote for sheer tenacity. While her talent is obvious, as is her showmanship, when Denise was first selected for the semi-finals of the Calypso Monarch competition she faced a very hostile crowd that showered her, not with praise but toilet paper and racial epithets. She survived it and eventually triumphed. She and Rose were genuine leg, thigh and choicest morsels.

There are others who came later -Singing Sandra is one of them. But somehow, and I suppose it is basically my age and how I feel about calypso, I love the women who came out to entertain. They might have had a message or two like Francine, or out for "tempo" like Rose, but the preaching and teaching, the moaning and groaning were secondary to the joy they projected. And when the heavyweights come out with social and political commentary, projecting more gender than sex, I ask myself like Denise Plummer, "What is this?"

Britney, who has been going through some mental trauma, had been banned from seeing her own kids during a custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Parents who were starstruck gave their permission for the singer to teach their four to seven-year-olds her dance moves in Los Angeles.

"Britney was amazing with the kids,” the Sun quoted Robert Baker of the Millennium Dance Complex as saying.

The 26-year-old singer had been taken to UCLA Medical Center to be put on an involuntary psychiatric hold, however she left the hospital on Feb 6, to the disappointment of her parents.

Juke Box styling changed from the stark wood boxes in the early 1930s to brilliant lighted displays with plastic and color liveliness of the Rudolf Wurlitzer 850 Peacock jukebox of the early 40's. Unfortunately once the USA government entered into the 2nd world war, metal as well as plastic were required for the war effort.

During the war, cion-operated music system production was cut back. The 1943 Wurlitzer 950 boasted wooden coin slides to economize on metal. It should also be mentioned that although the juke box mechanisms were made of alloy, they weren't built during this era, instead, an new console was developed and the inside components of the jukebox were set into it. Since most of the mechanisms were built by hand, many of these automated music systems contained components which never fit the right way and involved refitting.

The 1943 Wurlitzer Victory console had glass illuminated panels rather than plastic. After the war, materials were in stock once again and there was a great expansion in juke box manufacturing. The Wurlitzer juke box symbolises the appearance and is arguably the most popular juke box design of all time. Many of of these lived on into the 1950's in active use and are alternatively related with the fifties in pop music culture despite their 40s origin, as their unique visual prominence and production volume.

After the '40s, the juke box trends as a whole went more three-dimensional and techy in appearance, distancing themselves from traditional designs such as ancient Grecian, renaissance, and Gothic architecture motifs detected in the 'forties model juke boxes.

Music juke boxes of the forties came to be known as Golden Age because of the yellow catalin plastic. Music juke boxes of the fifties are known as Silver Age because of the predominant chromium-plate design. With the ascension of drive in restaurants in the sixties, dining establishments wanted to get customers in and out quickly.

Modern sheet music comes in many different formats including the recent invention of digital sheet music (often downloadable in the .PDF Portable Digital Format) and it can be argued that at least in the Western world is moving away from the paper format. Sheet music is different to Tablature (a.k.a Tab or Tabulature) is a form of musical notation, which tells players where to place their fingers on a particular instrument rather than which pitches to play.

If a piece is composed for just one instrument / voice (such as a piano or an a cappella song), the whole work may be written or printed as a piece of sheet music. If an instrumental piece is intended to be performed by more than one person, each performer will usually have a separate piece of sheet music, called a part, to play from. This is especially the case in the publication of works requiring more than four or so performers, though invariably a full score is published as well. The sung parts in a vocal work are not usually issued separately today, although this was historically the case, especially before music printing made sheet music widely available.

Sheet music can be issued as individual pieces or works (e.g. a popular song or a Mozart sonata), in collections (e.g. example works by one or several composers), as pieces performed by a certain artist etc.

When the separate instrumental and vocal parts of a musical work are printed together, the resulting sheet music is called a score. Conventionally, a score consists of musical notation with each instrumental or vocal part in vertical alignment (meaning that concurrent events in the notation for each part are orthographically arranged). The term score has also been used to refer to sheet music written for only one performer. The distinction between score and part applies when there is more than one part needed for performance. Scores come in various formats:

? A full score is a book showing the music of all instruments and voices in a composition lined up in a fixed order. It is large enough for a conductor to be able to read it while conducting rehearsals and performances.

? A miniature score is like a full score but reduced in size. It is too small for practical use but handy for studying a piece of music, whether for a large ensemble or a solo performer. A miniature score may contain some introductory remarks.

? A study score is sometimes the same size as (and often indistinguishable from) a miniature score, except in name. Some study scores are octavo size and are thus somewhere between full and miniature score sizes. A study score, especially when part of an anthology for academic study, may include extra comments about the music and markings for learning purposes.

? A piano score (a.k.a. piano reduction) is a more or less literal transcription for piano of a piece intended for many performing parts, especially orchestral works; this can include purely instrumental sections within large vocal works (see vocal score below). Such arrangements are made for either piano solo (two hands) or piano duet (one or two pianos, four hands). Extra small staves are sometimes added at certain points in piano scores for two hands in order to make the presentation more complete, though it is usually impractical or impossible to include them while playing. As with vocal score s (below), it takes considerable skill to reduce an orchestral score to such smaller forces because the reduction needs to be not only playable on the keyboard but also thorough enough in its presentation of the intended harmonies, textures, figurations, etc. Sometimes markings are included to show which instruments are playing at given points.

While piano scores are usually not meant for performance outside of study and pleasure (Liszt's concert transcriptions of Beethoven's symphonies being a notable exception), ballets get the most benefit most from piano scores because with one or two pianists they allow unlimited rehearsal before the orchestra is absolutely needed. They can be used also to train conductors. Piano scores of operas do not include separate staves for the vocal parts, but they may add the lyrics and stage directions above the music.

? A vocal score (a.k.a. piano-vocal score) is a reduction of the full score of a vocal work (e.g. opera, musical, oratorio, cantata etc.) to show the vocal parts (solo and choral) on their staves and the orchestral parts in a piano reduction (usually for two hands) underneath the vocal parts; the purely orchestral sections of the score are also reduced for piano. If a portion of the work is a cappella, a piano reduction of the vocal parts is often added to aid in rehearsal (this often is the case with a cappella religious sheet music). While not meant for performance, vocal scores serve as a convenient way for vocal soloists and choristers to learn the music and rehearse separately from the instrumental ensemble. The vocal score of a musical typically does not include the spoken dialogue, except for cues.

? The related (but less common) choral score contains the choral parts with no accompaniment.

? The comparable organ score exists as well, usually in association with church music for voices and orchestra, such as arrangements of Handel's Messiah. It is like the piano-vocal score in that it includes staves for the vocal parts and reduces the orchestral parts to be performed by one person. Unlike the vocal score, the organ score is sometimes intended by the arranger to substitute for the orchestra in performance if necessary.

? A collection of songs from a given musical is usually printed under the label vocal selections. This is different from the vocal score from the same show in that it does not present the complete music, and the piano accompaniment usually is simplified and includes the melody line.

? A short score is a reduction of a work for many instruments to just a few staves. Rather than composing directly in full score, many composers work out some type of short score while they are composing and later expand the complete orchestration. (For example, an opera may be written first in a short score, then in full score, and then reduced to a vocal score for rehearsal.) Short scores are often not published; they may be more common for some performance venues (e.g. by bands) than in others.

? A lead sheet details only the melody, lyrics and harmony, using one staff with chord symbols placed above and lyrics below. It is commonly used in pop music to capture the essential elements of song without specifying how the song should be arranged or performed.

? A chord chart or "chart" contains little or no melodic information at all but provides detailed harmonic and rhythmic information. This is the most common kind of written music used by professional session musicians playing jazz or other forms of popular music and is intended primarily for the rhythm section (usually containing the piano, guitar, bass and drums).

composers in the modern world today. However, whilst one cannot argue
with their creative skills, they lack basic modern marketing skills.
And the world is missing out on this distinguished talent.

The most affordable and convenient way to market your music today is
through the internet. It is used by billions every single year. So why
do many piano players fail to market their music online? Why do they
go down the traditional route of taking it to a publisher?

Marketing Method Number One – Creating Your Own Website with A List

If you make the decision to market your music online, it is almost
criminal to do so without a website. Your website must be where you
send all of your prospective customers. Your website must contain
details on how to purchase your music, both online and offline. I
would also recommend having a 'sample' piece of music for clientele to
listen to for free and to be able to download the score.

When you are building your website, you must include a list. What is a
list? A list is a collection of email addresses of potential
customers. Your list should be kept abreast on new pieces of music
that you are creating. Also they should receive occasional incentives
to remain on your list, eg. a free song or a discount.

It is much easier to sell to people that know and trust you then to
sell to a complete stranger. But so many people in all facets of
marketing spend more time on getting more customers than selling to
previous customers. Do not make this same mistake. By investing no
more than $US200 per year, you could and should have a major increase
in sales.

Marketing Method Number Two – Piano Radio Stations

Piano radio stations are a great way to market your music online.
There are numerous radio stations on the World Wide Web that
specialize in all sorts of areas, and piano is no exception. Whilst I
could only speculate costs, you might be able to get your music played
for free, or even better, you might be entitled to royalties from that
particular radio station.

The main difference between radio piano stations and normal piano
stations is that online users are able to click on a link that will
take them directly to your site. So make sure that the music that you
submit to radio stations are some of your best pieces of work and fit
the mould of the station.

Marketing Method Number Three – Submitting Your Scores To Directories

There are numerous cases where piano composers only market their
actual music and neglect to market their sheet music. This is such a
silly thing to do. If a piano player likes listening to your music,
then naturally they would want to learn to play it. Web sites like
Free Piano Sheet Music would be more than willing to put your
compositions onto their web site for free. Also you would get valuable
links from your sheet music to your website.

Marketing Method Number Four – You Tube

This is the new way to market your music online. You Tube has simply
taken the world by storm, not only from a viewers perspective but from
a marketing perspective also. Similar to video clips that you see on
MTV you are able to create your own video of your music. It does not
have to be a complicated task. The easiest way to do it is to record
yourself at the piano playing the score and this would be enough.
However if you have a theme to your music i.e. the ocean, then you
would cut to shot of the beach, i.e. waves crashing on the rocks.
