The site is called YourHub, and it is a national site with local applications. You first go to the website at www.yourhub.com and select your city, state and so forth. Then the main site transports you to the local site in your city. After that you are free to register (free of course), and then you can open a blog and post articles about things that might be of interest to people in your community.

They also offer a stories section for full sized articles or stories that you might want to use to promote your affiliate retail stuff. Now, it is important not to use this type of service to just post commercial stuff. I try to write articles that will be of interest to others about sports events, baseball, football or whatever. Travel is great, local getaways and the like. Within the content you are free to build links to websites, so that is where you can place contextual links to sites you have made, or to your affilate sites to hopefully sell whatever might relate to the articles you write.

Yourhub also offers cheap or free classified ads. This is a wonderful service and of course you can post free ads, but for just $500 you can have the top of the heap listing and have your new classified ad posted on ALL HUBS. I am just starting this, and I have placed one test ad to see if I can figure out how to sell through this medium. They allow links and images in the classifieds, so it is easy to do and perfect for white hat marketers like me. I have placed one ad advertising a road bike I selected from one of my affiliate merchant partners.

I live in Lakewood, Colorado so there is a very active hub for my city, but since I chose to place my paid ad on all hubs, and since people ride bikes in all cities, I stand a good chance of selling some bikes through this well read, high traffic online social network. I suggest that you might add this to your arsenal of white hat sites.

One of my favorite online social blogging networks is ZIMBIO. It is a cool blog network where you can import your articles from your other blogs, or you can write original articles right on the site. After that you are free to post your blog articles on other Wikizines within the Zimbio community. Of course, they have the normal anti-spam terms we all love and expect. Zimbio is one of my favorite community sites because it actually generates some traffic to my websites and some sales as well. Back from Holiday weekend in Glenwood

Glenwood Colorado is a wonderful place to go for a getaway weekend, and this was our 15th wedding anniversary, so it was really necessary for me to leave the old computer for a couple of days. We left mid day Friday, and returned mid day Sunday, leaving me the rest of Sunday to get caught up on my website business. Of course, I am also watching the Rockies and and Angels (in the background) and the Rocks are up for a change, but with 11 and 19 they just need a win. Then they need another win, and so forth until they are again over 500. I love baseball, and of course I have some active promotions out there for selling Rockies gear and tickets. I kind of free wheel this way in everything I do.

Every day I read a bit more in my new book called Don't Make me Think. What a great little book this is, with common sense solutions for us website builders to make our visitors understand where they are, where they can go and where the stuff they are looking for is! For the modest cost, this book is one good buy. You may be doing a lot of stuff wrong and not even know it, but the book will convince you to change your ways and make more money.

Anne Kadet of SmartMoney Magazine practices "Thin Journalism"!

I just read Anne Kadet's article entitled "A Penny for your Clicks" and I am really stunned that a journalist would practice such "thin journalism". Her portrayal of Affiliate Marketing is such a thin analysis, such a skimming piece of the affiliate world, that I felt I had to comment.

The article is superficial and inaccurate overall, and only describes a tiny bit of a very big industry that makes the world of online commerce more democratic. Here is her defination of affiliate marketing from the article:

"affiliate marketing is a mom-and-pop sliver of the online advertising business with a big impact. Most participants are regular folks who work from home, posting online ads and promotional-text links for thousands of brands,"

Well, she got the part about "big impact" correct, but she unfairly categorizes us all as simpletons who post ads with scraped content and only affiliate links, and on and on she goes. I really don't practice the kind of affiliate marketing she describes, and I see clearly that she has purposefully defined the entire industry as a spam generating polluter of the web.

Anne wrote a piece her editors should have screened better, and she needs to interview some affiliates who lead the industry to find out how they differ dramatically from the "thin description" she has assigned to us.

She also completely quoted Jason Calcanis out of context as you can clearly see by reviewing some of his keynote address at the Affiliate Summit. Using an opening comment and expanding upon it the way she did actually makes me think she is the living form of "thin journalist"

Anne took a joke Jason Calcanis told at the beginning of his address, and turned it into a theme. Too bad, and it's no batter than what we see in the political arena where they do the same sleazy thing. Thin journalism has no place in the legitimate world of SmartMoney Magazine. JMHO

Hey, I received a cool comment from a famous marketer

It is signed by someone named Joseph Park (I deeply suspect that is not his real name) and it contained a link to www.affiliatemillions.com and there is a Micheal Cheney promotion for receiving a FREE REPORT for just giving your email and name, etc. Here is the letter comment as it appears on yesterday's blog:

Seems like you also follow Mike Filsaime since you have paydot.com banner on your blog. I was also in his mentoring program for a year. He's one of the genuine people I know.

Anyway, I like your style. Short and precise and very informative. Well done. It's funny that I found your blog which is about affiliate marketing because I just launched a product with Michael that talks about exactly that. Affiliate Marketing! Can you believe it?

Mr. Joseph Park states that he just launched a product with Michael (I assume he is talking about Michael Cheney), and it is about affiliate marketing. I wonder who these guys really are? Why my blog anyway? These so called gurus are using other schmucks to market their phony make money stuff? I guess this comment on my blog is one of the "secrets to riches" these gurus teach about on their "secret reports" and all that stuff.

He says in the first sentance that I must follow some dude named Mike Filsaime because I have a PayDot.com banner on my blog. I wonder why anyone would think I follow some Filaimse guy just because I have an affiliate network banner on my blog?

Have you ever heard of these blog commenters? I guess they use the comments to generate traffic to their pages. Other than the link in the signature, this comment makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It is just link bait garbage from fake blog commenters.

Do you get affiliate writer's block?

I get this block sometimes where I cannot see my way to the next affiliate marketing project. This is certainly not an uncommon problem for affiliates, but for me it is very frustrating because I have personally mentored several young affiliates and I talk about ways to overcome this block. Whatever I teach, I cannot seem to master when I have the condition.

It takes some time away from the computer when this happens. Usually I need to go for a bike ride, a car trip, a hike or something like that to get the clear mind I need to move forward. It is very difficult but when the block is gone, I get more good ideas to work on. I have to be excited about a project or I won't do it. I just cannot do a thing unless I like it.

Following the affiliate managers emails sometimes gives me new ideas that I have not even considered. I love to look through them because some affiliate managers have some great ideas that come through, even if they sometimes did not intend on creating that on my end. They are all different and present information differently.

I have created whole web page projects from affiliate manager emails. Others get deleted because many AMs don't put much into it and probably don't get much out of it. As I said, we are all different. So, if you are an affiliate manager, be creative and enlighten your affiliates.

I think I will go to the casino today! Maybe that will motivate me.

Bad News about Joel Comm's new ebook

In a previous blog I advertised the fact that Joel was selling his new updated ebook for only $9.95, and I assumed he was "giving back" to the entrepreneurial community with this reasonable price. The last time he created the ebook it sold for $97, and lots of people including me bought it without realizing there was an additional condition that you would automatically be billed every month for a subscription to his insiders newsletter.

I wanted to warn others who may consider buying his book that this condition is in the sales letter, but I certainly missed this little detail, and I am sure many others did too. So I just sent a letter to Infomedia informing them that I have no desire to be subscribed to the monthly newsletter at all. I am waiting for a reply at this point, and wondering how Joel and his associates will respond. As an affiliate of Joel's, I am now hesitant to further promote the ebook until this gets clarified.

I hope he will completely retract the automatic subscription. We shall see. I am not going to promote this thing anymore either way, as I hate this kind of stuff. I should have looked deeper when I bought the ebook, as the $9.95 was certainly cheap. Now I understand what happened.

Affiliate Diversification leads to Multiple Streams of Income

You hear a lot about "multiple streams of income" in a lot of marketing hype, commercial messages and ads for ebooks. The fact that the phrase is somewhat overused is not enough to devalue it. The actual reality is that having several streams of income is exactly the way many affiliate marketers run their businesses, including me.

How do you get to the point where you have reliable multiple streams of income? I will attempt to answer at least from my own perspective.

I just kind of naturally evolved with many different streams of income, but when I first started out there was nothing. My first check came from Amazon, then more followed including networks like CJ and Linkshare. Eventually I branched out into classified marketing and 2 tier recruiting, and over time I had ten or so small checks coming in.

Truthfully, the way I bumbled into the world of "multiple streams of income" was that I was trying a lot of things online to make money. It was not brilliance that lead me to it, but simply joining and promoting a lot of different things. Some worked, and some did not. Funny thing is that several of the programs I joined in 1998 are still active, and still make me money.

Here is a list of affiliate programs, networks, marketing services and the like that make money within my small empire of sites.

Shareasale Affiliate Network, Amazon Associates Program, Linkshare Affiliate Network, CJ Affiliate Network, USFreeAds Affiliate Program, USFreeAds Premium Ad Membership, Google Adsense Program, Online Future Affiliate Program, AdlandPro Affiliate Program, ClickBank Affiliate Network, Squidoo, ZLiO Shops, CPA Empire, Avantlink (working on it), VIP Profits and I am sure there are a few more out there.

The point is that even if I only earn a few hundred or less from each stream, the aggregate of all the streams is a significant amount of money earned through my version of affiliate marketing. Since I do SEO marketing for natural content listings, I never buy keywords. I do research keywords, but not for PPC. I do it to determine what to market and how, and to have the right keywords and phrases on my pages.

Multiple streams of income is really a smart way to develop a business like this in case you are first starting out, but it is certainly not the only model. If you can make a fortune in one program, then why not? I just never had that even begin to happen to me, so I have worked on lots of different ones over the years.

Beautiful day for a bike ride and selling bikes too!

I love bike riding, and I do all my riding on my old BikeE you see here. I got this bike a long time ago in about 2001 I think (best I can remember) and in another year or 2 the BikeE company went out of business. Now you must buy or sell these things on ebay, and occasionally there are a lot of them for sale, but most people do not ride these things. I saw 2 today besides mine, and one went by so fast she didn't even wave at me, but the 2nd guy said "hi brother", and I replied in kind. There are so few of us out there, that we usually greet each other. I have a page about selling them on ebay at the BikeE Page, but I wonder if I have converted the affiliate links there yet or not. Hmmm, more work to do as usual, but I did get some stuff done after I returned home and added more Amazon Widgets to my retail product display pages in several niches. This project will take me the rest of the month for sure. Amazon is to be commended for creating this new cool tool for associates. Sure think it will be a winner! More things that I find remarkable is that more people are following me on Twitter for some strange reason, but I wish they would just come to my blog and/or my website to see what's going on with me. Some of the people following are pretty good marketers as far as I can see. If I can stay on edge of the envelope I may be able to survive into the next 5 years in affiliate marketing. I sure hope so, because this is what I plan to do after I retire from UPS.

The other thing I have going on is Amazon's new Deal of the Day widgets. I have been integrating them into my system in certain places too, but that deal is not for each and every page I have out there. It does have a good application on my UPS Driver Help Me Retire blog of course, and on my shopping center which I now gear towards deals of the day anyway. Fun stuff for me for sure.

I am still actively representing a local bike store who sells through one of my top affiliate networks, and bike searches and queries are picking up like mad. Road bikes and mountain bikes are featured on my pages of course, and now is the time for that activity in the affiliate world. Well, have a great day. I will be off work tomorrow but I have 2 morning doctor appts, so will not be active online until after 1300 hours or so.

Amazon Widgets are new and useful - Integration

I am really having fun integrating the Amazon Widgets into niche pages. These things are excellent, and you can set them up in a variety of ways. I most recently placed a widget on my stroller page and it really looks good.

The funny thing is that when I first started in this business I actually was selling books about online marketing and web promotion. In fact I did get my very first check from Amazon in 1998.

So anyway, the Widgets sure work well, and they come in immediately after downloading the page, and I think I will place them on quite a number of pages today. I have lots of places for them.

They also allow "Deal of the Day" widgets in various sizes, and video widgets too. Very nice new iprovements at Amazon and I will use them!

Using classifieds to sell is quite different now days than it used to be seveal years ago. There are many classified ad sites that offer limited exposure and a small one paragraph ad and maybe a link, maybe not. So many different ad services out there, and we marketers have the task of determining which one or ones to use.

I have a good listing of free classified ad sites and if you take the time and place an ad at each one of these there will be some positive results, but honestly it will take all day to do this.

I have landed at USFreeAds as my favorite and most effective free classified ad server. There are a lot of good reasons for this decision, but the main one is making money. I make money with my ads on USFreeAds.

When you sign up for the premium membership, you get more than a customer should have a right to have! When you make ads, they are FULL PAGE ADS that are fully html enhanced, and you have not only one special place for your sales link, but you can optionally place that link throughout the body of the presentation.

In fact, if you have pre-designed a web page presentation in html code, there is a special input area for that too, and your design will supercede theirs. Your ads are going to look and feel the way you want them to, and they become independent web page ads.

Please just go to the registration page and look at the benefits of this service as compared to the free service, and I think you will be convinced. The service is just like having your own peice of a huge ad server, and you control it. All ads are subject to approval, but very few ads get turned down. You have to be placing them in the wrong catagories to get disapproved.

How I make money online as an affiliate

I have published bits and pieces of my methods before, but today I decided to kind of summarize all the ways I make money online. I am not a super affiliate overall, but some of my areas of expertise have made me a formidable affiliate at least. I believe in diversification in my affiliate marketing efforts, and this has resulted in my having multiple streams of income from different activities within the scope of the affiliate marketing industry.

The first thing I started out doing, and still do is to recruit other affiliates in the 2nd level of 2 tier programs. This does not represent a huge part of my income, but it has always paid me a regular amount each month because I have never stopped doing it. This is accomplished by my main site pages where I feature 2 tier affiliate programs and affiliate networks for other webmasters to sign up for.

Now, within this structure I have spent some time promoting free classified ad sites, and many of these sites are also either 2 tier programs, or they pay me when a visitor I send to them upgrades and ad from free to premium (or whatever they call it). On a good month, I will receive 4 payments from free classified sites for visitor upgrades. It is a good "bread and butter" source of revenue for me.

The next thing I have had success with over a broad spectrum of affiliate marketing niches is the creation and promotion of informational pages that are an overall presentation of the targeted merchant's products and services. When I do this I include a lot of information from the merchant website that I feel is needed to interest the visitor. If a merchant site is big, broad and full of massive amounts of informtion, I will focus on the sections that I feel I can make money with. This type of presentation has to include lots of independent opinions and reviews that I write myself. I do not copy and paste to create this kind of page.

When I create this kind of informational page leading to a merchant's site, it will also include approved banners, buttons and search boxes the merchant has provided through the network it runs through, or through the "in-house" program area. I also always include Adsense link units at top and bottom, and in most cases somewhere on the page I will place Adsense ad code as well. This gives me 2 opportunities on such a page to earn income. Again, make sure if you do this to add your own unique opinions and comments that make the page unique. With this kind of presentation, I have been able to rank in search for certain keyphrases and keywords and in some cases, beat the merchant's own original site in search ranking for those terms.

The next area I make money with is in building retail product display pages. This is a really fun and exciting area for me because it is about 1 year old for me, but very productive. I got the idea from discovering the "make a page" area of the Shareasale Affiliate Network. I have many of my product display sites linked to my Online Shopping site. I can use the controls on SAS to display as many or as few products as I want to, and it varies from site to site. The really neat thing about these is that SAS creates the display in HTML, and that makes the display more useful in search ranking. Not all of my product displays are in search, but most are, and queries will lead to the pages I create from search and usually on the 1st page of the SERPs.

I always include Adsense code in various forms as allowed on all of my retail product display sites. This creates 2 ways to make money with each of these sites. As a general rule, I do this with all of my web publishing activities.

Shareasale is a 2 tier network, so to make some extra money I sign other webmasters under me in the network. Every time those webmasters make a sale, I receive a 5% 2nd tier override to my account. I do not make a big amount with this, but since it is there I use it. This is just another example of using all resources to create those multiple streams of income. All you have to do it to recruit good webmasters into the program, and they will make money for you. To recruit I use the network pages on my domain, and I make separate presentations on sites like Squidoo. Here is an example of a page on Squidoo which recruits new webmasters for me.

Here is another way I have found to add new revenue to my business. It involves a really great site called USFreeAds. I am a Premium member of that site, so my ads never expire and I can create as many ads there as I want to. I use all of my affiliate networks to get the material for my ads, but primarily I use ClickBank and PayDotCom. I do this because those sites offer mainly ebooks and software products and those are the easiest to sell in a classified ad format. Of course you can use the free ads for this if you want to, but the Premium service works far better because the ads never expire as free ads do. I describe this entire process at another Squidoo site called Make Money with Free Classifieds. I have also described this process on this blog often so it is not necessary to repeat it again here. Just read the page and you will get the idea of how to do it. It is a major area of my income and it is only 7 months old as a process for me.

I market individual products too, and that is through a combination of my main domain, web 2.0 member sites, classifieds and on blogs. Take for instance a certain herbal remedy for hypothyroidism. I will create a separate page to describe that condition, include direct links to the product being recommended to solve it, and I will also create another similar but different presentation on another site (with different content and subject coverage), and link it to the first page, and then I will add the product presentation to my Women's Health site and somehow the search engines like that process and if I am lucky, one of the 3 pages will index well and generate sales when visitors are researching remedies for that condition.

I market primarily in the sectors of retail gifts (online shopping), health (herbal and natural), sports (sporting goods and team blogs), affiliate marketing and entrepreneurship and other side subjects such as travel and humor stuff. Funny thing is that some of my humor pages are highly ranked, passed around and get good traffic. I have many of these creations linked to my sports site called NetSports Pro Interactive.

So there it is, kind of in a nutshell. Shall I create an ebook and sell this information for $49.99? One of my sons has strongly suggested that I should do that, but as of today I am still giving it away, but if I were to actually write all the nitty gritty details of how I actually create the pages and balance the keywords, phrases and meta tags, etc, then maybe I would make a pdf file and sell it on Clickbank. Until then, it is all here on my network of websites and blogs for all to see. I have been doing this now for 11 years in various forms. I have a page on my main domain called How to make money in affiilate marketing.

I have always loved my website affiliate marketing activities. I wish I had made a million dollars, but alas not. However, I am pretty good at it and have always had a good second income from it.

Clickbank is going global

I love the Clickbank network for affiliates and publishers. I have become much more active with this network through my recent involvement with USFreeAds, so I have come to respect the accuracy and integrity there.

Recently they announced that they are integrating global currencies, but they are not doing it all at once. They are adding new functionality one step at a time to keep the whole system operating without any difficulties or interruptions.

To read about the progress Clickbank is making I recommend that you visit and read the updates on the Clickbank Blog. Many of Clickbank's clients have requested globalization of operations including currencies and language integration, so they are implementing those changes.

What to do with Twitter? More Opinions out there.

I have a Twitter account, and a friend of mine uses his all the time, so he found mine and invited me to follow him. I agreed since he is a friend, and then I began posting more and then a funny thing started to happen: Other members started to follow me too. I went through the growing list last night and decided to follow most of them as well, which may be a bad and stupid thing to do but I am still unfamiliar with exactly what to do with this thing. So now I am actually having a conversation from time to time, and end up directing people to my own web marketing sites once in awhile.

On WebProNews there is a cool discussion about Twitter presented by Mike McDonald called Twitter Unleased. There is a marketing aspect to Twitter and Mike, as he interviews Mike, gets into that very well. There is a difference between Spam and Marketing to a group, and Mike talks about that as well. This is a good video that he obviously worked on for a good long time, as you will see if you watch it.

As if there weren't enough of these things already, here is another one called OblinQ.

Allows users to make a free store and populate the store with products from a wide variety of merchants and online superstores. Interesting program and easy signup, so I will begin to evaluate it later as I get time. It looks like a typical web 2.0 application with revenue commission splits.

March Affiliate Review shows new trends

I have finished my review of March sales and traffic, and there are some new trends I am seeing. First of all I am seeing more targeted affiliate type traffic through web 2.0 communities and stuff like twitter. That is very fun and exciting for me. If I want to recruit new affiliates in my system for 2 tier networks, I am seeing more success in web 2.0 applications. Traditional lower yeild programs are performing as expected.

More and more sales are being realized through my 3rd party ad services, with most of it coming from the USFreeAds classified system. Really though, that site has evolved from being a simple free classified site to one with full interactive services for premium members. It really makes no sense to upgrade a few ads when a marketer can join the premium service and have the automatic upgrade for every ad created. It is an amazing system, and if you are a premium member many of your ads get indexed in search without buying clicks.

My diet sales for a national diet system are on the rise month after month, and March was no exception. It matched February, and the national obsession with weight loss has not slowed. If anything, I am seeing more queries to sales, which tells me that more people are getting very concerned about their weight as a health issue. Many queries ask questions related to how long it takes to lose weight, how the food menu looks, what calorie levels are used and so forth. Quite specific queries for sure. I highly recommend natural health and diets for affiliates!

I am still struggling to get my CJ sales back up to the level where they were 2 years ago. I have revamped some important sales pages and made some technical changes within the manager to try to fix things, but so far this network is no longer in my top 5. Too bad, because I know this should not be the case, but I will continue to work on this as a top priority for my business. I love the CJ system because they pay like clockwork every 20th of the month. I am going to make it a goal to set up some new presentations this week.

One concern I have at this point is that I am seeing record traffic to my various shopping product display sites with many keyphrases used which shows me that I did a good job. The sales in this category dropped off steeply in the last 2 weeks of March however, and that is why I am looking again at the displays themselves to determine if I am doing something wrong. I am hoping that April brings much better results here like I have from Jan through mid March. Working on it is all I can say at this point, but I already have proven that this method works well. Just need some fine tuning.
