It is very difficult for a single owner of a small specialty store to compete with the mega-stores and their buying ability to get discounts from wholesalers.

The advantage to the crafter is that the mega-super craft stores are becoming more common. Stores like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores are more available in smaller cities across the country. While these stores can not offer the expert advise or personalize service that the smaller specialty stores offered, what they do offer is a huge variety of crafts at a much cheaper price. Even stores like Target and Wal-Mart often have smaller craft departments, but you are still able to get the basic necessities of your hobby. Another advantage to the larger stores taking over the craft market is that it enables you to go to one place for all your craft shopping. If you are scrap booking and making cards and sewing, for example, you can get everything you need in one place.

The other option for crafters is the hundreds of on-line shopping stores available right from your home. A quick search on the internet will yield you more craft stores than you could ever use. Although the small owner operated craft stores are gone, the ability to shop for craft supplies has continued to grow.
