Crafts have been used as therapy for many years, although it used to be used more in years past than it is today. It’s a shame because it can be a very helpful tool to overcome depression and certain physical limitations.

Let’s first look at the benefit crafts have on the mental state of someone suffering from depression. For instance, let’s say someone has lost their job due to cut backs at work. It can be very difficult to find work in today’s economy because of the competition. Picking up a craft can benefit you in two ways; it can help take your mind off your troubles and it can also provide a way to make a little extra money. Creating crafts is a marketable hobby. Depression is a state of mind that focuses inward. Focusing on a craft takes away the thoughts of how bad things are. It’s replacement therapy.

Doing crafts can also be soothing. If you are feeling a lot of anxiety due to circumstances in your life, doing crafts can help relieve stress. Working with clay or knitting gives you something to do with your hands. That physical act focuses that nervous energy into a productive outlet that is very therapeutic. Have you ever noticed a nervous person biting their fingernails or tapping their fingers on a table annoyingly? There is nervous energy that has to be released during times of stress. Doing crafts gives that nervous energy a safe and productive outlet.

Crafts can also help rehabilitate certain disabilities. Those who have had a stroke or struggle with arthritis or some other reduced function in the hands have discovered that doing crafts helped to restore mobility in the hands and fingers. Needlework, knitting, crocheting, sculpting with clay, painting, and many other types of crafts have helped people with limited motion increase their mobility.

The Best Internet Sites for Finding Craft Projects

There are hundreds of sites available for you to search for craft projects on. They should learn to be like the children and let their imagination run wild.

Seniors Are Enjoying Crafts Now More Than Ever

Senior citizens are now becoming more active in their later years. They are starting to learn new things like crafts, and even activities that will help them to keep them in shape. Doing crafts is one thing that can be done at any stage of your life. There are so many different types of crafts that can be done no matter what your health limitations are.

Seniors are finding that they sleep better, have a better outlook on life, keep their mind more active and can even fight the onset of depression if they stay active, and one way that they can do that is to get involved in doing crafts.

Crafts are something that can be done alone or in a group. Depending on the craft of choice, a group project can always be fun when involving a few friends. Starting a group activity around the holidays is especially fun. One activity that can be done in groups is creating Christmas cards out of old used Christmas cards. Just cut up some old cards in different shapes and sizes and glue them onto note cards and trim with your favorite trimmings and ribbons. Mail these out to family and friends to use as ornaments on the Christmas tree. Making photo albums is another fun activity to do alone or in a group. Who doesn’t like to look at pictures of the family or of beautiful landscapes? When making a photo album it is up to you to choose the order and what is put in it.

Seniors can express their personality with their arts and crafts to pass down as heirlooms to the younger generations.

Children and Their Creativity

Late summer and fall are the best times to expose children to the art of crafting. With all the holidays and parties the season brings, it can be a great joy to include children in the decorating for fall events.

Large, full pine cones, for example, have the potential to become much more than yard clutter. With a little glue, construction paper and an imagination, a child can turn these common objects into colorful turkey centerpieces for fall baskets or miniature Christmas trees, complete with glitter and tiny ornaments.

Planning a football themed get together? Let the kids provide the artful décor. Foam board footballs and helmets painted with your favorite team’s colors can be used as yard signs or street decorations. You can also use them inside as wall or table decorations.

For a cool Halloween, let your children explore crafting. Popcorn balls made with melted marshmallows and popped corn are a traditional favorite. Another fun activity involves filling plastic food service gloves with popcorn and tying the ends end closed with yarn. Then, let your child paint finger nails on the gloves or decorate them with spooky spider rings and give them out for trick or treat. Not only is this a neat craft idea but it provides a healthy alternative to candy for the kids on Halloween night.

Fall is an excellent craft season for kids. Given the right materials and a little imagination, your children can help provide you with one of a kind decorations to help make your season fun.

Crafts for Beginners

Age and retirement bring on some extra time that we may want to invest in crafting. Parents should have an area of their home dedicated to crafting. For smaller kids, they can learn a range of things from cleaning their area to proper use of items intended for crafts. Parents should always consider having an area that allows their kids to have fun and build crafts that fit their age group.

Through crafts parents, can also teach their children to be giving. The crafts can be made as personal gifts, and kids take pride in their achievements. So whenever your child has made something, parents should show recognition for whatever he or she personally created. There may be a children's hospital in your area, and this would be a good time to show your kids they can create something like a homemade stuffed animal to take and hand out. When your child does a deed as this for others, he or she can put a smile not only on their face but someone else's as well.

All you need to do is go into a craft store and purchase the items for the child, and use these in combination with items at home in order to create some crafts. All you really need for the younger kids are some crayons, paper plates and other simple objects that allow their imagination to take over. Even a young child can make macaroni necklaces or objects made out of popsicle sticks.

Using Crafts Therapeutically

Crafting can be used therapeutically in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons. It can be used to take your mind off the busy day you just had, it can be used as a challenge as you learn to create new patterns or projects on your own, and it can be done with friends.

When you are engaged in making something, your hands are busy while your mind is on the project. This is a good way to let go of the stress of the day. You can work as fast as you want or do as much on the project that you want. You don't have to deal with the pressure of producing something in a given amount of time.

Learning something new is a good way to stimulate the mind. It can help you let go of repetitive patterns that you do on the job each day. It's a confidence builder for you just knowing that you can be creative. The interesting thing also is that you can use whatever materials work best for you.

Socializing with your friends while making a craft is a good way to relax also. Not only do you have the enjoyment of being with them, but also you have the opportunity to learn something new or to make what you are doing better by getting tips from your friends. You even have the opportunity to make new friends.

Whether you are following a pattern or just experimenting on your in creating a new project, crafting is a good way to relax.

The Best Craft Stores

There are so many craft stores for different kinds of projects that choosing the best ones for your needs can be really difficult. However, there are a few stores that have been around for a long time, which says something about the quality of their business.

The first name that comes to mind is Jo-Ann Fabrics. Starting out as a cheese store in 1943, they began carrying small amounts of crafts material as well. Today they have over one thousand stores and an online service as well. The growth of this company shows a dedication to crafts and materials.

A second big name in craft supplies is Hobby Lobby. They have been around since 1973, when they split off from a picture frame company and bought a huge 1,000 square foot building. They now have over forty four stores across thirty three states. They also have a huge manufacturing complex in Oklahoma City that is also used by Hemispheres, Mardel, Mart Green and Crafts, etc. They too have an online service to assist their customers.

The last well known company in the crafting community is Michael's. In 1984, this company had sixteen stores. As of February 2007, they have nine hundred twenty stores, each carrying about forty one thousand items. They can be found in forty eight states.

If you are looking for crafting supplies, than these are good places to start your search. Any one of them should have whatever you might be looking for.

Creating Crafts With Your Children

Bonding with children is not the easiest thing for some parents. One simple, often overlooked way to bond is by creating crafts with them. It’s something that most children would love to do and can be fun for parents as well. It’s also a cheap way to have fun with your children and bring out creative similarities between parent and child you may not have realized otherwise.

This special one on one time with your child can be a great way to connect on another level. During this time, your child may open up to you and let you know exactly what’s on their mind. Creating crafts is also wonderful way to let your children relieve their everyday stresses in a positive way. Believe it or not, children get stressed out too.

Creating crafts with your children can also teach them valuable life lessons, helping them appreciate learning while giving them the courage to try new things. As the parent, you should always show emotional support when your child is being creative. By making them feel good about themselves and praising their work, children will be more enthusiastic about spending time and playing with you.

This encouraging feedback from you can help foster a positive self image in your child. Not only can making crafts help children’s self-esteem, but it reinforces the idea of rewards for hard work and diligence, something important to instill in children of all ages. By working creatively with them, you can establish a close relationship with your children that will last a lifetime.

Crafts Online

If you are considering learning the technique of crafts online, there are many websites to help. You can find designs for kids' crafts and many projects online.

Once you find the best craft for yourself, you can learn even more with the articles and learning seminars online. You can learn jewelry crafts by buying jewelry kits. Quilting is another craft that is being taught online with basic techniques.

Scrapbooking is one of the newest crafts to learn online. Digital scrapbooking is a hot new trend in scrapbooking right now. You can purchase the software, and away you go. You can create your own designs and layouts. There is no need to purchase scrapbooking paper.

Another wonderful craft online is the making of your own personalized greeting cards. This is great because you can fill in the name of the recipient, a special greeting and your name and then print. All of the printables are free. There are pre-made templates and you can even add your own photo.

The sky is the limit when looking for crafts to do online. From hand puppets for the kids or stylish pillows for your home, all you have to do is check out the website.

Needless to say, you will need a lot of hard work and determination to start a web site for selling your crafts. It is suggested that you start with downloadable software or e-books. You must choose a domain name and register it. You will also need to design a site to suit your needs for the item that you chose to sell.

Amazing Relaxation With Crafts

Crafts are a proven way to help reduce the level of stress while helping a person relax. Adding crafts higher on a person’s to-do-list can help a person deal with everyday pressures and problems. If your looking to relax after a hard day at work or a busy day with the children, then pick up a craft, like scrapbooking, knitting, printing, bead working or whatever help you to relax. Crafting can help distract a person from de-stressing the mind, body and soul. The creative part of crafting has become a healing art. By keeping one’s mind, heart and hands busy, a person can start the relaxation process.

A Study was done by the Home Sewing Association, which was mentioned in the Journal on the American Medical Association. They studied 30 women and their stress reaction to five leisure activities that required similar eye-hand movements. After checking the women’s blood pressure, heart rate, perspiration rate and skin temperature, they found the women’s stress level drop the most after sewing a simple project. Their stress levels increased after performing the other tasks like playing cards or video games. A renown mind/body expect, Dr. Herbert Benson, stated that by doing crafts like knitting or crocheting helps a body relax due to the repetition and rhythmic.

Take the time for your craftd at least once a week if possible or once a day, even better, to help your stress levels go down. By keeping your stress levels down, you are helping yourself stay healthy body and mind. Scheduling your crafts during your day or get with others to create.

Fall Crafts for Everyone

There are very many fall crafts out there that the whole family can have fun doing to decorate your home. For example, an easy one is to take the caps off of acorns, paint them orange, and put some brown up where the stem would be on a pumpkin. When the paint dries, draw faces on the tiny pumpkins with a black permanent marker. This is just one of many that is fairly simple for anyone to do. There are many things to use for your crafting projects such as apples, leaves, gourds, pumpkins, and corn husks.

Try a paper bag scarecrow or an autumn wreath. Try stringing leaves up like a garland to hang up around the house. Another thing the whole family can do is go outside for a walk during the fall and take the kids so they can observe nature close up. Have them take a bag to pick up any goodies they might find along the way such as acorns or pretty colored leaves, and just enjoy being together and observing the changing of the seasons. When you get back home the kids can make leaf rubbings from the leaves, a necklace with the acorns or any number of projects with the things they have brought back.

A quick search on the internet will yield loads of inspiration for the kids. Even venturing to an apple orchard to pick some apples with the kids, you will have some apples to eat and some do make fall crafts with. It’s fall have some fun.

Advancing Your Craft Abilities

Are you interested in working with crafts, but seem to be doing the same old projects, never venturing into anything new? Even if you are not interested in changing from one type of project to another, most often you will find that there are advanced levels of the crafts you already work with.

For example, you may enjoy quilting, but only do basic stitches and patterns. You can either go online, or go to your nearest craft store and find books that will provide you full instructions on more intricate patterns and stitches to try. Another way to advance your skills in quilting is to make a handbag or vest, instead of just a quilted coverlet. Scrapbooking is another craft that many of us do on simplistic levels. However, if anyone truly enjoys this craft, the sky seems to be the limit for your imagination. Advanced scrapbooking can get very detailed, but the projects are very rewarding.

Another craft that can take your skills to higher levels is stamping and greeting cards. It sounds simple enough, as many of us can create basic greeting cards with our home computers and print shop programs. Again, you can go online or shop through your local craft store to find projects beyond your wildest dreams. Stamping and embellishment on cards takes a lot of practice to do it well. Learning how to use the “see thru” papers and glues is an art of its own, as well as adding the special glitters, personal photos, messages, ribbons, and other accents.

All of these particular crafts result in very personal projects, which can also be designed for special gifts at holidays or birthdays. Don’t hesitate to stretch your abilities and imagination.

Intricate, Expensive Crafts

Many individuals get involved with a craft they enjoy, only to find out that it becomes a major expense to keep doing. Like any other hobby, certain crafts are considered "high-end" on the expense list.

For instance, scrapbooking on a beginner’s level can be done with a reasonably inexpensive budget. It also helps if you have a lot of imagination to experiment and improvise. However, if you don’t possess all of those extra qualities, you may find that scrapbooking can become very involved, and very expensive. The more intricate and detailed the projects get, the more special tools and extra supplies may be needed, all of which can add on to the “pricey extras.”

Another craft that can get out of hand with expenses is faux Faberge eggs. These eggs are absolutely gorgeous if done with a skilled hand. However, between the purchase of the intricate drills, sanders, and cutters you need to start with, you then have to find a place to purchase the egg shells, the proper coatings, paints, jewels, and other embellishments, as well as proper classes. This craft is an extraordinary art that can certainly produce gifts that will be kept and remembered for a lifetime. But, if you are looking for an “ultimate challenge” craft, this could be considered one.

Any craft can become expensive if you get very involved, but usually you can find resources to purchase your supplies in bulk or at discount prices. There are also some crafts that are just considered “priceless,” and the expense of doing the project itself does not even become a factor.

Simple Crafts Out of Your Household Items

When you want to do a craft there is no need to run to the store to buy your supplies. Your house is filled with endless materials that can be recycled into creative masterpieces. Decoupage is a form of art that has been around for centuries. It is one of the best ways to transform your household items into masterpieces that you can proudly display. All you need is paper, an item you want to decorate, paintbrushes, and a decoupage medium.

Start by finding the item you want to transform like, an empty jar or can, picture frames, or an end table. You may want to paint any part of the item that will not be covered.

Next find the paper you want to use. Magazines, photos, wallpaper, stationary, and greeting cards are all perfect sources. Cut or tear the paper into any shape or size you want.

Now it’s time to adhere the paper to your item. Create a homemade decoupage medium by diluting three parts white glue with one part water. Using a paintbrush apply the glue to the back of the paper and a thin layer to your item. Press the paper firmly to your item and use a straight edge to smooth out any bubbles and wrinkles. Let it dry completely and then continue applying glue and letting it dry between layers until the edges of the pictures are smooth. Once your project is completely dry you can apply a sealant like polyurethane to protect it from water.

The next time you go to throw away your empty coffee can think about what a great art supply holder it would make for your kids. The possibilities are endless. You have all the tools you need in your household. Now go and get creative.

Crafts for Beginners

So you have decided to start doing crafts. Well, a few things you should know are: pick a craft that appeals to you, do something you have a passion for, and make sure your craft meets your budget. Some crafts are very expensive and others are not so expensive.

When starting a new craft it is important to do your research so that you know what you are getting into. Scrapbooking for example, can be very time consuming, messy and expensive if you choose to buy all the cutting dyes and other tools. Scrapbooking also requires a bit of skill to put together some of the complex pages that come for experience in the craft.

Beaded jewelry is a great first craft hobby because you can start with large plastic beads and work your way into intricate, small glass beads. It can take years to master, but beaded jewelry making is fun, relaxing and can result in beautiful, wearable pieces that you can sell or give to your family and friends.

Another fun craft for beginners is making cards. Anyone can do this, from a 2 year old child to a 100 year old lady. It is easy to get supplies, in fact you can use many household items such as tongue depressors, pipe cleaners, toothpicks, and Popsicle sticks. There are also mass marketed products you can use as well like fun flock, glitter, metallic ink pens, foam stickers, and confetti. All these items can make for hours of creative fun.

Crafts With Family Photos

Family pictures accumulate rather quickly, and, before you know it, you have boxes of photos all thrown together. A good way to display all these memories is to make an album or two and place the photos on a plain piece of paper. Then decorate the paper to match the picture, like baby footprints for a baby picture or cut out some letters from a magazine making statements about a vacation snapshot.
Some people even cut out their pictures and paste them on ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree. Others glue them on cards to send to their family and friends on special occasions. The crafts are easy to make and there are a number of ways to go. One could use a small square box made of cardboard and put pictures on all four sides and use it for paper clips or rubber bands. You can even put pictures on all sides of a tote to be used for the beach.
You could also cut out a collage and frame it or make a family photo bookmark as a special project. One could make a family tree with different shapes of homemade frames from construction paper. The first thing you have to do is to separate them in piles of kids, singles, parents, and family photos. Organizing your photos is the first step to displaying and enjoying them. The possibilities are endless when crafting with family photos.

Watercolors for Relaxation

The best way to relax is to use your creativity. You know that thing that you really like to do. Or you can try your hand at painting with watercolors. You would be surprised at how calm it will make you feel even if you have never done it before.

There is just something about the colors and the ease in which they go on the paper or canvas, whichever you choose to use. And it really isn't all that hard to paint a butterfly or a bird in flight. When you see what you have created you will have a sense of pride and feel like the world has been lifted from your shoulders.

Doing crafts is very therapeutic so is putting a puzzle together when you put your hands to work it sets the mind in motion. So your mind is on the project that you are doing whether it is making something from yarn or sewing an item of clothing from a pattern. You may even find yourself making cards with a variety of colors or paste pictures of cats on them. You can put anything you like on the card it is your own to do with as you wish. It will be your treasure and every time you look at it you will smile and have a warm feeling of contentment. Before you know it you will be trying to think of new things that you can make and you will be buying more supplies and from the craft store so you can explore all of your new found projects.

Shopping for Craft Stores

There was a time when you could find a specialty craft store in any town. The wonderful thing about these small owner operated stores was that you could ask the owner any question about your craft and get an expert’s advice. If they didn’t have exactly what you wanted, they would usually order it for you. The personal service was unbeatable. Sadly, these stores are getting squeezed out by mega-super craft stores. It is very difficult for a single owner of a small specialty store to compete with the mega-stores and their buying ability to get discounts from wholesalers.

The advantage to the crafter is that the mega-super craft stores are becoming more common. Stores like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores are more available in smaller cities across the country. While these stores can not offer the expert advise or personalize service that the smaller specialty stores offered, what they do offer is a huge variety of crafts at a much cheaper price. Even stores like Target and Wal-Mart often have smaller craft departments, but you are still able to get the basic necessities of your hobby. Another advantage to the larger stores taking over the craft market is that it enables you to go to one place for all your craft shopping. If you are scrap booking and making cards and sewing, for example, you can get everything you need in one place.

The other option for crafters is the hundreds of on-line shopping stores available right from your home. A quick search on the internet will yield you more craft stores than you could ever use. Although the small owner operated craft stores are gone, the ability to shop for craft supplies has continued to grow.

Crafts for Senior Citizens

Making crafts are a great way for our senior citizens to pass some very enjoyable hours. Crafting together helps seniors to be more social and interact with each other. Research has shown that people who engage in hobbies such as craft work are less prone to depression. In addition, many crafts are good therapy for stiff hands and fingers. Many seniors are on a fixed budget and cannot spend money on expensive gifts. Making crafts is one way that seniors are able to give a very special gift to their loved ones without spending a lot of money.

There are literally thousands of craft projects to choose from according to your senior’s physical abilities. If their eye sight is sufficient enough, sewing opens up a world of projects, from making clothes or toys, to making decorative items for the home. Quilting, knitting, or crocheting can produce beautiful baby items, shawls, wall hangings, lap quilts, or even full size blankets. These larger projects are something that an entire group of seniors can work on together. Making baby blankets to give away to local hospitals, or sewing soft toys to give to the police and fire departments or local shelters is a great way for seniors to make a positive difference in their communities.

Making crafts with grandchildren or other children in the community is a wonderful way for the generations to interact. Food crafts are fun for everyone and can be geared for any age group. Your senior groups could even have a bake sale after the crafts are completed so that the children and seniors can show off their end results, and perhaps raise some money for a local cause. Working with children is a great way for our seniors to pass on their traditional crafts to a whole new generation.
