This is one reason I generally avoid the comparison. Usually, it is because it is inexact. Moreover, it has lost its impact precisely because it has been tossed around way too casually. It creates its own defense, as it were, because the people at which the criticism is aimed do not think of themselves as Hitler and so they disregard the comment entirely.

But one need not descend to the level of Hitler to be engaging in wrong behavior or unethical policies.

Tabs: I agree. We need checks and balances over all powerful enterprises--including science. The problem is a growing hubris that has some among the science intellegentsia thinking that ONLY SCIENTISTS have the right to determine what is ethical and moral in science. I just have very little reason to trust anyone with as much undeserved authority as we give scientists - we write them a blank check because they supposedly hold the keys to the universe around us. Nevermind that they're normal people with their own personal opinions - you just can't have the neutral observer thing that people think of when they think "scientist."
