Still a bad bill, but the worst of it was removed--at least for now.Wesley J. AB 2747 has been revised to exclude palliative sedation and VSED, voluntary stopping of eating and drinking, and the prognosis of "less than one year to live". Also admittedly it is difficult to determine how long one has to live once diagnosed with a terminal illness. However, I believe this law is in the interest of reducing an individual's suffering by requiring a greater timely effort by the health care provider (s) to provide the necessary end of life information to the patient and family. I hope that you will reconsider and support AB 2747. As a nursing student, I believe it is crucial that people are informed to make decisions regarding advance directives and their needs for hospice prior to entering into the most difficult and final stage of their illness.
CS, Sacramentooragebluhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17128417533745228348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10381465.post-23297148311413780062008-03-31T17:24:00.000-07:002008-03-31T17:24:00.000-07:00I actually responded to the post that follows this...I actually responded to the post that follows this one (I'm way behind - real life stinks that way), but as I said, when Dad was going through chemo, one thing that was brought up was "terminal sedation," which was presented as, "you are kept in a coma until death by natural causes." It wasn't his doctors who brought it up, by the way - there was an outside consultant who mentioned it. It was supposed to be a way of dealing with end-of-life problems without defying our Catholic belief in the sanctity of life. We don't do euthanasia, active or passive. There was no mention of dehydration or starvation, none.T E Finehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02145212330537906750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10381465.post-82417486518352880082008-03-28T20:00:00.000-07:002008-03-28T20:00:00.000-07:00The Vermont bill is not so explicit, it seems to m...The Vermont bill is not so explicit, it seems to me, but could lead to the same result since terminal illness is one year also. http://www.leg.state.vt.us/docs/legdoc.cfm?URL=/docs/2008/bills/intro/H-804.HTMWesley J. To have concerns about addiction to such drugs seems both cruel and idiotic.

The cynic in me wonders how much of this is influenced by the political weight of the large drug manufacturers.

I think I would prefer being in a haze/daze (vs an induced coma) so as to at least be able to change my mind.

Mort (who can't believe some of this stuff)Mort Coreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02704546166864783389noreply@blogger.com
