I and very few of my friends decided on the later once we saw how watered down the former was. When I tell my patients about the details, they shake their heads rather sadly. The father of our calling wrote the oath foreseeing exactly our current circumstance and to protect the profession against the corruptive influence of serving two masters. I'm afraid their true intention might be to justify acts such as abortion and assisted suicide - those situations could be considered "times of need." If that is the intent of the phrase then it is a slam on doctors who refuse to perform those acts.
