A new Guns N' Roses song, "Shackler's Revenge," apparently from the decade-in-the-works album "Chinese Democracy," will be included in the video game "Rock Band 2," according to a report in the New York Times.

I guess it's safe to say that I have "Coldplay fever" right now. I've been spinning Viva La Vida pretty much non-stop this weekend, and, as a matter of course, been slowly warming up to several songs contained on the new album.

One such song is track number three, '42,' a poignant piano ballad where Chris Martin's vocals really shine.

2008 has been the year for Nine Inch Nails to give back to the fans.

Just three months ago, the band released the four-volume instrumental collection, Ghosts, for a mere $5 digital download, with the first volume available for free.

Last month, the band surprised everyone with the unexpected release of a new, full-length NIN album, The Slip. That album is also currently available for a free download, with the note, "Thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years -- this one's on me."

So, it's not surprising that Trent Reznor would already follow that up with yet another free offering.

Lights in the Sky is a 5-song EP featuring new music from bands supporting NIN on its summer tour: A Place To Bury Strangers, Crystal Castles, Deerhunter, and Does It Offend You, Yeah? The Nine Inch Nails track "Echoplex" is also included, along with bonus album art and web graphics.

While it may have been a horrible movie in its own right, 'Last Action Hero' spawned an incredible soundtrack. Alice in Chains made it on the disc twice, demonstrating the album's awesomeness. 'What the Hell Have I?' may be the better known AIC tune, but the band's second offering, 'A Little Bitter,' provided a nice slice of deep track goodness.

Death Cab for Cutie - 'I Will Possess Your Heart'

The new Death Cab CD is released today. If their first single is any indication, the album is probably darker than its predecessors.

When I have spoken to friends and acquaintances regarding their thoughts about 'I Will Possess Your Heart,' the consensus seems to be general disapproval. Some individuals have stated that the song sounds too goth, while others have expressed annoyance at the relentlessly repetitive chorus.

I, on the other hand, have found myself really appreciating this new sound. Concededly, the lyrics do have a stalkerish quality to them, but the music imposes such a subtle level of perseverance just underneath the words, that I find the song to be simultaneously inspiring.

Video Double Whammy - MGMT & Calvin Harris

There are a couple of pretty sweetastic music videos I ran across today that I felt deserved a posting.

(1) The first is from Connecticut's MGMT (pronounced "management). Their spacey electronic masterpiece, 'Time to Pretend,' has been racing up the charts lately, and their video seems to be a great potential nominee for a VMA later down the road. With giant cats and multitudes of zebras, this vid is quite the visual experience:

(2) The second video is Calvin Harris' fairly recent single, 'Acceptable in the 80s.' A snappy 80s-inspired dance hit, this video revolves around the dissection of an otter-like animal and how the humans around it benefit from its "donations." Kid Rock has come a long way since his rapping days. He's now going to be touring with Lynyrd Skynyrd!:

"Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd have announced that they will tour the US together this summer.

The rockers are set to kick off their 'Rock And Rebels' tour in Oklahoma City on August 8. They'll then play co-headlining dates in Houston, Indianapolis and Toronto before wrapping up in Hartford, Connecticut on August 31."

David Allen Coe - 'You Never Even Called Me By My Name'

It's not hard to like an outlaw country song. Not only are they great to drink a beer to, but the best ones always seem to speak to you in all the right places. 'You Never Even Called Me By My Name' is the perfect example of such a tune.

'You Never' is wrought mostly with bluesy despair during each verse, but once its rallying chorus kicks in, the song quickly transforms into a marshaling cry for all friends in low places:

"And I'll hang around as long as you will let me / And I never minded standin' in the rain / But you don't have to call me Darlin', Darlin' / You never even called me by my name!"

But perhaps the greatest part of 'You Never' is the final verse:

"Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison / And I went to pick her up in the rain / But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck / She got runned over by a damned old train!"

Florence and the Machine is a self-proclaimed Grindcore band hailing from the UK. What is most enticing about this group is lead singer Florence's INCREDIBLE chops. Indeed, she lays out a soul puncturing vocal on this post's featured track, 'Girl With One Eye.'

Give this tune a spin, and be sure to watch out; as the lyric suggests: "She'll cut your little heart out if you make her cry."

Album Review: Mindless Self Indulgence - if

Mindless Self Indulgence's new album, if, doesn't officially hit store shelves til next Tuesday, however, I received my limited edition digipack earlier this week. And let me tell you, I can't get enough of it.

The band is still as juvenile as ever,yet have somehow morphed their career from minute-long spasms of industrial punk into an entire record of trashy, radio-length singles. The rapid time signature changes and snarky, potty-mouthed lyrics are still there. So are the fantastic hip-hop beats and curiously glitchy layers of video game-like programming. Jimmy Urine can still transition from goth metal to Sesame Street within a single breath.

If adds 15 tracks to the group's already extensive catalog. The album is a strong mix of new material and revamped darlings.

For instance, 'Animal' and 'Revenge' are two songs finally getting the chance to breathe as studio recordings, having been live show favorites since at least 2002.

'Bomb This Track' is another gem that has floated around the net in bootleg form for a couple years. The demo to 'Pay For It' has made the rounds for the the last year as well.

MSI's new material continues to find the band straddling definition. The apocalypic 'Mastermind' is as dark and sarcastic as the band typically gets - making references to school violence. By contrast, 'Issues' is a playfully immature rap with lyrics such as, "It's 3am, she won't put out, let's go make out with her friends, make out with her friends friends."

'Mark David Chapman' was written through a series of myspace polls which relied on fan involvement.

Chantal Claret of Morningwood sings duet on 'Get it Up', one of my favorite politically-incorrect songs on the entire album.

While die hard fans of the old-skool MSI will likely balk at this more commercially-palatable side, if is really just a logical step for an illogical band. Mindless has always hyped a "sell-out" mentality while remaining fiercely independent. Their legions of Hot Topic-saluting, teenage goth minions have only solidified how punk the group actually is. And for all the songs they've written in declaration of talentlessness, the ultimate joke is that the band is really very good at what they do.

With if, Mindless Self Indulgence show they still have a knack for tongue-in-cheek wackiness while further proving their innovation and catchiness. The vulgarity may have gotten watered down since their start a decade ago, but the slapstick is in full-effect. If you liked 2005's You'll Rebel to Anything, if is all of the absurdity and twice the package.
