Ramirez Factor Affecting Odds

Manny Ramirez, the Red Sox left fielder, is perhaps the most dangerous hitter in the game, and the best RBI man in the last five decades. He is also one of the characters of the game, and has demanded a trade from Boston on a few occasions.

Boston has generally ignored him, knowing that they can not make a trade that will give them a chance at the 2006 World Series. If Ramirez stays against his will, he is likely to have one of his famous 'turns'. Or maybe just go through the motions of playing Baseball - without really 'being there'.

He has 40 home runs and 122 RBI’s on average in five years with Boston. It would be best for all concerned if that could continue.

Last year the Sox scored over 900 runs for the third year in succession. They became the first team since the Yankees in 1930 to manage that.

It basically won't happen again easily without the this man.

Ramirez is the most productive cleanup hitter. Mike Lowell, Jason Varitek and Trot Nixon are down the order at number five at best.

The odds have already been affected. For example, Red Sox are around 3/1 to win the AL East and the Yankees are 4/9, Toronto is 9/1 and Baltimore and Tampa Bay way out.

If contract issues arise or Ramirez is traded, Toronto are suddenly a very interesting pick at 9/1. It is safe to say that a lot rests on the Red Sox and Ramirez sorting it out - so the man stays happy.

Colts Still On Road To Perfection

The Indianapolis Colts moved in to odds on favorites for the super bowl. They are as short as -120 (5/6) with some bookmakers and are still riding the road to perfection after they moved to 13-0 with a win over the Jags.

Manning passed for 324 yards and threw in a pair of touchdowns to Marvin Harrison. Mike Vanderjagt kicked four field goals which gave them enough of a cushion to absorb a Jacksonville fightback - and give Indianapolis a 26-18 victory.

The Colts became the fourth team in NFL league history to reach 13-0 - it has given them the AFC South title and home-field advantage throughout the play-offs.

Seahawks Look To Spotlight

Location and lack of real success have conspired to prevent Seattle from getting media attention over the years. Nothing can be done about the location - short of moving the frachise - but their 9-2 record is overcoming the 'success' element of the equation.

They'll be in the spotlight when they travel to Philadelphia this week for their solitary Monday night game of the season. It's special to them, the league and the nation's fans will be watching.

The Seahawks, by there own admission, were lucky against the Giants but that evens out in the end. They will want to concentrate on beating the Eagles whom they have not beaten since Holmgren became coach in 1999. The Eagles beat the Seahawks at Husky Stadium in 2001 and then again at Quest Field in 2002.

Colts To Emulate '72 Dolphins?

It's that time during the season when comparisons start to fly around concerning the latest hot shot team and the 1972 Miami Dolphins. That famous 14-0 unbeaten streak (17-0 after they won the Super Bowl) still lives in the memory for many.

It is highly likely that the Indianapolis Colts, hosting the 1-7 Houston Texans this weekend, will continue to 9-0 but no one has matched 'the' Dolphins in over thirty years - at some point the Colts will falter, surely.

Who are the teams that have come close? The 1998 Broncos came the closest to matching the mark, with thirteen straight wins, followed by the 1985 Chicago Bears with their twelve.

Eight for the 1977 Dallas Cowboys.

Nine for the 2003 Kansas City Chiefs and the 1973 Minnesota Vikings.

Ten for the 1990 San Francisco 49ers, the 1990 New York Giants and the 1975 Minnesota Vikings.

Eleven for the 1991 Washington Redskins and the 1984 Dolphins.

No body has really got that close to 17-0.

Eagles Suspend Terrell Owens

"The Philadelphia Eagles today announced wide receiver Terrell Owens has been suspended by the team for conduct detrimental to the team. The team will have no further comment on the matter at this time."

Owens, who has also been battling a severely sprained ankle, will probably have missed Sunday night's game against Washington anyway and but the suspension has no time limit as yet.

Owens made comments about how the organization "lacked class" after not recognizing the fact that he caught his hundredth career touchdown pass - which he did on October 23 against the Chargers. Owens also stated that the team's claims about forgetting about the milestone touchdown was a "blatant lie" and had insulted him.

The Eagles do not typically honor individual achievements on the scoreboard or stop the game to celebrate an accomplishment.

More Coach Heartache For St Louis Rams

Joe Vitt, interim head coach of the Rams while Mike Martz recovers from a heart ailment, underwent a heart procedure of his own Monday. Vitt had an angioplasty but was expected to speak at his regular Monday afternoon news conference.

"He's doing fine," Lewis said. "...it was just a routine procedure. It had been prescheduled. It was not as a result of any issues over the last two or three weeks."

Vitt told players about the procedure after Sunday's 24-21 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Patriots May Get Bruschi Back...

New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi may be able to come back sooner than expected from the stroke that he suffered in the off-season. His teammates will be surely be glad to have him back.

"Anybody we can get back to this football team at this point would help us, regardless of who it is," Mike Vrabel said on Friday. "Whoever we can have back, we'll take back."

Bruschi had originally planned to take a year off to recover from the stroke that sent him to the emergency room just days after the Pro Bowl. But he would be allowed to start practicing on Monday - reports say that he does indeed want to return to the game this season and help a defense that has been dessimated by injuries.

The team bus passed by the hospital where his son, Michael Williams, died of a neurodegenerative disease two years ago. Hours later, Jurevicius had a career-best nine passes for 137 yards. After his touchdown reception, he wrote an "M" in the grass in honor of his late son.

Jaguars Outlast Bengals

Jacksonville beat Cincinatti 23-20 on Sunday.

The Bengals 4-0 for the first time since 1988 — the franchise's last Super Bowl season — had entered the game as one of the last two undefeated teams in the league.

But the Jaguars (3-2) took advantage of good field position early on and had two key stops in the fourth quarter that left their rivals, Indianapolis, as the lone unbeaten team.

Patriots v Raiders - Rivalry Intense

Jerry Rice is unlikely to get the chance to sign a one-day contract and retire with the San Francisco 49ers - not in the coming season at any rate. Rice is the NFL's touchdown leader and announced his intention to retire after twenty seasons. He spent his first sixteen with San Fransisco winning three Super Bowl rings.
Rice also told reporters that retiring with the 49ers was his next step.

But Rice waited to make his retirement decision until after final NFL roster cutdowns - the 49ers would have to release a player from their 53-man roster to sign Rice to a one-day contract — a ceremonial gesture made to several players in recent years.

Petitioning the NFL may be an option.
