Ask the Expert - How do I manage my breakouts?!

Acne is a condition that affects more people than you might imagine. Here are the stats:
• 40 million suffer from acne between the ages of 12-24
• 20% of adults have acne
• 85% will experience some type of breakouts
• 1 out of 16 people will have acne

There are 4 major steps to control and prevent breakouts.
1. Control oil production
2. Unplug the compaction
3. Rid of bacteria
4. Reduce inflammation

Breakouts typically have a lifespan of 2-4 weeks. The start of a regimen will treat existing, superficial lesions then move into preventing breakouts. A continued program will address the root of the problem and make the corrections before they are visible on the skin. Maintain a program for at least 8 weeks to see true results.

Q. How often can I get a chemical exfoliation treatment (aka a peel)?

A. The time to wait in between each chemical exfoliation treatment will vary depending on the strength of the peel. A good rule of thumb is to never peel already peeling skin, meaning that if you are still seeing sloughing from your last treatment DON'T go in for another just yet.
Instead book a gentle facial or a treatment involving enzymatic exfoliation to remove the dead skin cells.

More superficial peels may be performed more often than more aggressive ones. Additionally, a series of various treatments may be a better fit to get the results you are wanting. Talk to your skincare professional to customize a proper regimen for you!

Today's sneak peek product was chosen because of the completely GORGEOUS weather we are having in Denver today. It's sunny, warm....and definitely doesn't feel anything like February!

Since I'm in a warm weather mindset, I've been dreaming of everything spring and summer brings...flowers, green grass and most notably a bronzed skin tone (much lovlier than my current pasty whiteness)!

Though now, I don't need to wait until the beach to look like a bronzed goddess all thanks to...

It's a gel based bronzer that gives a perfect healthy (and foolproof) glow! You can wear it alone for a sheer sun-kissed look or you can layer with foundation (on top or beneath). I've been applying it before my gloPressed base and really like the look - it adds warmth but (back to my winter pastiness) it looks really subtle and natural considering the rest of me is not quite up to full sun-kissed speed.

If you've never used a cheek or lip stain you may be weary, but fret not, its as simple as can be. Though it looks super dark in the tube, this gel-like formula comes out the prettiest rosy pink you can imagine.

A quick dab on lips gives that youthful, 'I just ate a bowl full of fresh cherries' look...similar to what many of the starlets were wearing the other night at the Oscars. Plus, you can customize by layering on any other lip color. I LOVE the color but for my date a few nights ago I wanted just a little more shine. gloLiquid lips in precious (it's clear) made for a super quick fix and voila! Glammed up and ready for a night out!

On cheeks, make sure to start with a little, then build color to achieve what you want. It leaves a completely natural looking flush which can be worn alone or is pretty when a subtle bronzer or shimmer brick is applied on top to highlight cheekbones and add a little sparkle....cheeky!

Q: If I did not experience skin sloughing after a peel, was the treatment effective?

A: Yes. When a light chemical exfoliation treatment is performed you may or may not get skin sloughing. There are many variables that will contribute to the skin's response. If you do not peel, the treatment is still effective. The use of home care products, different prepping methods and treatment options will affect the outcome. Everyone responds differently to the acids and each acid has different properties. If it is a treatment that you regularly undergo, the skin can become resilient to it. It may be necessary to "outsmart" the skin by changing the treatment. Additionally, some peels offer the option of a refreshing treatment without the downtime (i.e. no sloughing). This also many be the case where a series of treatments are designed for progressive results rather than aggressive results. Work with your aesthetician to decide which treatments are right for you.

I love being covered in sweaters and other warm, cozy duds all winter but that usually means I forget to apply my usual slathering of lotion every morning. I'm one of those people that is always cold in the morning (even in summer) so once winter comes I'll "accidentally" skip the lotion step in order to hop in cozy clothes as quickly as possible after I'm out of the shower (much to the suffering of my skin). If you have the same do-whatever-it-takes-to-stay-warm philosophy, here is a quick and easy way to keep your skin full of moisture during the dry, harsh weather of winter...without needing to lotion up.

Try swapping your usual body wash in the shower for glospa hydrating bath and body oil. Full of goodness like macadamia nut oil, sunflower oil and lavender, it will deliver moisture to the skin that lasts long after you step out of the shower. The biggest benefit? It doesn't create an extra step in your morning routine...in fact, it very likely will eliminate a few minutes spent applying lotion.

However, if you are somehow so tied to your body wash that you can't imagine giving it up, don't fret. Simply have the hydrating bath and body oil in your shower so it gets nice and warm from the steam and apply once you've turned the water off. This way you are able to keep skin warm by staying in the shower, which will help it absorb more quickly, leaving skin silky and supple.

Actually have time for a little pampering? While running a warm bath, add a few pumps of glospa hydrating bath & body oil to the water. It creates a soothing milk bath that as you soak, your skin absorbs nourishing oils leaving it silky.

Newly launched gloPrecision eye pencil in twilight has been getting quite some attention!

InStyle beauty editors choose it as one of their color choices to amp up your look. It is a perfect, subtle navy that is a fun alternative to your basic brown or black liner. Plus is has the versatility to be worn day or night (and gorgeous for smoky eyes!).

US Weekly recommends it to achieve the look that all the celebs are wearing. By lining the inner rim of the eyes you create delicate definition and make eyes pop!

I created a smoky eye look for day using the twilight gloPrecision eye pencil and the gray shade from the new ballerina gloEye shadow trio that I've been wearing all the time...It's fool proof application is great (especially for me, who early in the morning has little coordination when it comes to applying makeup). All you need to do is sweep the gray shade on to the lid, focusing a little more in the crease. It is a super subtle wash of color so its impossible mess up. Line with twilight and smudge to your liking with the artists' tip on the other end of the pencil. Like I said, this is a definite day look, but if you are looking for a more intense eye look, check out glominerals mermaid, that features a smoky eye utilizing this stunning shade!

Pumpkin Yummy!

Hello glo girls (and guys)...it's been awhile! I was out on vacay (warm, sunny Hawaii I miss you already) but am back and ready to get down to beauty business!

Now that fall is in full swing it is time to get your skin prepped for winter (yes coldness is lurking right around the corner). I have a few skin treatments that I highly recommend around this time of year. Over the next few days I'll post multiple ‘recipes’ for your skin – feel free to mix and mix and match ingredients. All of these can be done at home, but if you are looking for a little pampering check your local spa for treatments that involve these glotherapeutics products. My first good-skin concoction is what I shall call … pumpkin yummy! We are just weeks away from the only holiday were you have every reason to stuff yourself silly with all kinds of edible goodies…but mainly pumpkin pie. There are many other good uses for this delish orange vegetable….pumpkin pudding, pumpkin bread, pumpkin soup…but pumpkin pie has always been my personal favorite. Until I used gloPumpkin Enzyme Scrub.

Besides the fact the first time I smelled it I wanted to eat it (which in my book is a good thing), it effectively exfoliated my skin without any irritation and left my face looking luminous! Pumpkin enzymes, which are full of antioxidants and Vitamin A, help to break down dead skin cells while date seeds and jojoba beads provide extremely gentle physical exfoliation. The texture is creamy and doesn’t feel harsh on the skin like a lot of scrubs, which is great news for my sensitive skin. And an added bonus is that it contains ingredients that are helping strengthen and condition the skin, so it’s not leaving your precious face stripped after you rinse it off. I’ve paired the gloPumpkin Enzyme Scrub with the new gloConditioning Restorative Mask for this super simple 2-step treatment. The mask is full of all kinds of goodness to further strengthen and hydrate the skin – acai, black currant, wild yam and shiitake extract just to name a few. It also one of the top smelling glotherapeutics products – yes I said smelling. I have strict criteria that my skincare products must meet and smelling wonderful is one of them. Ridiculous? I think not.

On to the regimen…
Gently massage a small amount of gloPumpkin Enzyme Scrub on to dampened skin. Leave on for 5-10 to allow the enzymes to do their job, then rinse off. Dry face with a soft towel. Apply a thin layer of gloConditioning Restorative Mask and leave for 10 minutes. After your 10 minutes is up massage into skin and ta-da…done! Does it get any easier than that?!

If you want to complicate things here’s another option. Rinse the mask off after 10 minutes and dry face. Apply a glotherapeutics serum (gloSuper Serum or gloRenew Serum are great choices to get skin back in shape after summer) and allow a moment to let it absorb into skin. Lather on a nourishing moisturizer like gloConditioning Hydration Cream or even richer gloConditioning Restorative Cream and then enjoy the rest of your evening knowing your damaged summer skin will soon be radiant again! No clue, but if I buy something pink its usually because of a certain cause behind it.

Back to the makeup... so, I was skeptical...but shocked when I gave it a go and LOVED what I saw. The pinks aren't super pink once on, but instead really delicate washes of color. After playing around with these 3 shades I've concluded that they look lovely worn together, but even better, they all pair nicely with other shades for endless look possibilities. The gray makes any eye color pop, but to amp it up even more try pairing with a gloEye shadow in blue suede and gloPrecision eye pencil in twilight for a twist on a smoky eye (TIP: the blue makes the whites of your eyes look brighter...perfect for you late-nighters out there). If you love color, pair the 2 shades of pink and add gloEye shadow in eggplant to the mix - voila! Gorgeous. Don't limit yourself to my suggestions - get creative! Burning the candle at both ends.

Guys and dolls, the day has come.

The anjou pear & grapefruit scent has now launched in candle form... and I am head over heels for this newcomer. I truly believe that this is quite possibly the most energizing candle I have burned. Ever.

When it was still in testing I had a sample candle that I kept burning all day, every day (let me clarify - while I was at my desk, no burning down the building happening on my account thank you very much). It was my new morning ritual to come in the office, grab a cup of tea, light my super energizing anjou pear & grapefruit candle and no matter how little sleep I had gotten the night before, I was awake and ready to get down to business within minutes (talk about workplace productivity!).

Then the inevitable happened. One day, and very early in the day mind you, my little anjou pear & grapefruit candle burned down to nothing and I was left not knowing what to do...the actual candles were still in production and I had no way of getting another for at least a month. I broke down and had a tube of anjou pear & grapefruit body butter sitting in my desk drawer that I would apply wayyyy more than necessary. Just to get a whiff... (this is when I admit that I, Lauren, am addicted to anjou pear & grapefruit...)

But now...the candles have launched!

Okay, okay…I exaggerated. But I bet if you tried - or just had enough time on your hands - you really could find that many ways with the gloRenew Serum.

Here are my top ten useful uses that I can confirm it works amazingly for...

1. Start prepping the skin to get the exfoliation going before you go see your derm for your scheduled peel – you’ll see much better results! Use 2-4 times a week for a few weeks prior to treatment.

2.Want more dramatic results after your peel? Continue use at home to increase skin sloughing (though as with anything immediately following treatment check with your doctor first).

3.Are you an oily skin gal? Use this regularly to balance the skin and help minimize that slick feeling (a must-have for warm or humid climates).

4. Sneak it into your man’s skincare routine – its great for his skin too! Men typically have thicker, more oily skin...meaning they need all the help they can get to keep oil under control! After a grueling 'get your-butt-in-shape-even-though-summer-is-practically-over' workout the other day I realized a whole new use for a long time favorite product (not to mention a great treat for my painfully sore legs).

I was determined to find 30 minutes to just sit and soak in a soothing, hot bath...only that never happened so...instead I stole away for 15 minutes to have a quick pamper of another sort.

Here's my newfound recipe...

1-2 glospa bath whips (slip away or renew- take your pick - both are scrumptious!)
A small amount of warm water
Washcloth
glospa body butter

Crush a bath whip cube and dissolve in just enough warm water to make a paste. Smooth over your feet and lower legs and catch up on your celeb news/fashion week recaps/gossip girl on TiVo until it dries. Once the paste has completely dried and turned slightly powdery, wipe off with a warm, damp cloth (or if you're like me and you prefer steaming hot, toss a damp washcloth in the microwave for just few seconds. Be careful! Too long and its burn city baby!). Once clean, slather on body butter to keep legs and feet smooth, soft and smelling pretty!

In 15 minutes you've acheived not only skin that is super soft but also legs that are relaxed...ahh....
