(see story. )

When Morris moved to Cabri in 1968, the assets of the Credit Union were at 2.75 million. When he was dismissed, assets were over 17M.The Morrises were hard working people. Elaine had a beauty Parlour in their home, Gerry had his credit Union income plus some commissions from his small Insurance business. Some income was derived from doing land transactions transfers, mortgages, caveats. Anything to keep our members at home and doing their shopping at home. When the law firm came out asking for more business, Morris explained what the situation was at the time. This was no problem - he would be paid for working for them. C.U. Central also advised Credit Unions to send their mortgages to their law firms – the lawyers advised you are practicing law without a license if anything went wrong the Credit Union was liable. In discussing it with the Board, a policy came out that mortgages over $10.000.00 would go to the law firm. We would continue to do our own smaller ones and all fees collected on these would go to the Credit Union and all corporate loans would go to the law firm. This was a good solution to keeping our members in Cabri had no need to go to Swift Current to sign papers, etc and then doing their shopping there as well.

After 12 years in Cabri, the Morrises decided why not buy our own home and plan to retire there when the time came. Raising a large family requires budgeting. Our actual living costs should be covered by Gerry's wages. Extra earnings would go elsewhere for emergencies or any extras. With a son working in a Bank and him getting "points" for new accounts, that is where the money was directed. After he went into the Hotel business, our account was transferred to Pioneer Credit Union. This way if you were away, and needed money, all you had to do was go to your nearest ATM.

Then came the fateful night of Dec.14, 1983 when Morris was dismissed "with cause". No cause was given and he was not penalized by UI.

In April of 1984 Garnet Morris, the oldest son, was able to purchase the Kelliher Hotel, thus creating a job for his parents. The family home was repossessed–they tried to sell it, but there wasn't a market for houses in Cabri, and the Credit Union would not change the payment to an annual one to enable us to get it caught up we had to give up our home losing about $30,000.00 equity. Half of Gerry's pension fund, and all of Elaine's savings were used for moving, legal fees, etc. Finding a lawyer to defend him was practically impossible -- anyone with political aspirations wouldn't touch it.

The hotel business provided long hours and hard work, but a roof over their heads and food to eat. All the lifting and long hours were hard for people of our ages and health problems, to carry on. Kelliher was sold in Sept/85 and the Morrises moved to a suite in the Park Lodge Motel in Moose Jaw which was owned by their son. It was here that the Heart Condition which had bothered Gerry since 1980 reached the critical stage. Gerry had By-pass surgery in Nov. 1985. In December of 1985,Gerry was criminally charged with accepting "secret commissions" or "kickbacks" as the media quoted it.

More legal expenses - - now a Criminal Lawyer. They must get back into the work force. After all, the only income was UIC and a small pension from Co-op Superannuation. So their son purchased the Hotel in Wilcox in Feb.86, three months after heart surgery. It housed the Beauty Parlour for Elaine, a restaurant, bar and arcade. More 18 hour days and hard work. Later with a daughter at home to help run the hotel, Gerry went to work for his son at the Georgia Hotel in Regina to earn more wages for the legal battle. Gerry was convicted in Dec. 1987, so appealed his case. The hotel was sold in Dec 1987 also.with Elaine maintaining her Beauty Shop. In Feb 1988 his criminal case went to the Court of Appeal. Legal counsel was asked if he wanted to go with Charter of Human Rights course - - after all why should Morris be the only one charged. Gerry was advised by his counsel that this route could take years, and he didn't want to make a career out of it, so that route wasn't taken.

The appeal was lost. Still believing in his innocence, Morris felt paying the $1,000.00 fine was like an admission of guilt, so would not pay the fine. Besides, where would another $1000.00 come from? Elaine moved her shop into their home so she did not have to pay rent. Morris was arrested May 12/88 and spent 24 hours in jail, being released Friday May13 to work off his fine at the John Howard Society in Regina and was able to put in some hours at the Georgia Hotel as well.

With insurmountable debts, personal bankruptcy followed .He took out his Canada Pension Plan early to give a little more income. The wrongful dismissal case sat in limbo for several months due to lack of money and counsel.

The Georgia Hotel changed hands on Jun 4th, and Gerry was kept on until July 15th. Now its back to unemployment Insurance and where does a 61 year old man find suitable employment -- honest but not bondable. Gerry says "Thank God I have a good wife who has a fairly good business as she is the main breadwinner through it all. She has stood behind me through it all. Very few marriages could stand this stress.

And now they face the courts again. Was he justly fired ? The Morrises say no, it was wrongful dismissal, and lawyer Ken Wasylyschen of Yorkton would defend them. How to manage it financially ?? It means cashing in his life insurance policy for the Cash Surrender Value - - the only thing left.

Since the Justice System could not or would not proceed against the law firm, what other route is there. Suits by Morris could be laid against Wilson, MacBean, Maurice & Tesem but would he get a fair trial against an MP (Wilson) a judge ( Maurice), a past president of the Law Society (MacBean) and Tessum-a brother in law of the Credit Union Central "higher ups"

And where do you find a lawyer who is willing to put his carer on the line and sue a law firm in such high positions, to see justice is carried out. Besides, there was no money to pay for his services. It's asking a lot-but the Morrises wanted to keep fighting for justice.

(Added by Elaine) After talking with several lawyers who are very encouraging that justice was unfair, they are all afraid to take on the task of laying charges against people in such high positions. Even though they would like to se justice done-they feel their career wold be finished and they would be in the same position as we are in.

Just like the fairy tale of "Belling the Cat"
Sheila Steelehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10806511293945949036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10133448.post-1106010175257300582005-01-17T17:02:00.000-08:002005-01-17T18:11:00.736-08:0041 years ago: What happened in Cabri

Morris_children1964, originally uploaded by Sheila Steele.

I graduated in 1946 at age 18, then went to Chiropractor College. While I loved it, I decided the expense was too much for my parents, and student loans didn't exist. I started working for the CPR as agent & telegrapher. Three generations before me had been railroaders: my dad & my brother were agents operators.

I married in1948 & ten months later became a father. My wife left me and we were divorced in 1951. My parents took care of my daughter until I settled in as an agent in Buffalo Alta. Got an older lady for a housekeeper .In the fall of 1951, I moved to Govenlock Sask and in March, 1952 transferred to Bracken Sask. This is where I met and married my wife Elaine who was a farm girl just out of high school.

We got off to a very rough start with Elaine being sick for the first six months, had surgery in Jan 54 got pregnent in Feb. had surgery again in May. But we had a beautiful baby boy in Oct/54

In June/56 we were gifted with a beautiful baby girl.

I had taken over the Bracken Credit union---running it out of the CPR office. Also did janitorwork at the town hall, and worked some evenings at the Co-op store, also the bar, so all this bit of money helped;. I curled, and took part in the church. Our social life was next to nothing except for the odd dance.

In Nov/57 we were on the move again, With each move it was a step up in wages; this was a much busier place, so had overtime wages also. Took a part time job doing books for the local gas station. Life was good, even though we were busy raising a family without any modern convinences. It was while here we had three more children: a boy and two girls. Then on the move again, to Stavley Alta. Moves were not easy, as the CPR gave you a box car to load your belongings in yourself, and when it reached destination you unloaded it yourself; it was really tough to do this with five little kids. When you moved to a station there wasn't even a cupboard.much less a chair, but we managed. No taking a hotel room until someone unloaded your things.

Railroading was getting very unstable at this time, with many of them closing, so we knew it was only a matter of time til we would be without o job. This is when Elaine decided to go to Lethbridge and take a hair-dressing course so she could work in our home and be there for the family at all times.

My plan was to go to university and take education. Don't know how we could have afforded it , but time would tell. Elaine borrowed 500.00 Dollars from her parents so with that and tips managed to finish in record time woking six days a week. Graduated with 100% [The first one in that college ] Opened a shop in Stavely, paid back her parents, but it wasn't long before we learned the station would be closing.

Now what with all these kids and an uncertain future what would we do, there wasn't money for Gerry to go to university, but somehow there is light in the darkest of night. Elaine's mom and dad saw an ad in the paper wanting a manager for the Tompkins Credit Union Wow!! That would be a God send. So applied and got it, so on the move again, but this time with a moving van, wow what a snap.

Gerry started his new job Elaine opened her beauty shop again, in our tiny two bedroom house. but a job was a job. Many times Gerry wondered why he had taken the job because things had changed so much since in Bracken, but with much hard work, studying long hours and perserverance he learned to feel very comfortable in this field. He attended all the C.U meetings and courses available and did very well.

Times were very tough as we took a terrific drop in pay. In fact , we could hardly make ends meet, with having our oldeset son being an asmatic and our youngest daughter with a cronic kidney condition costing $5.00 every 3 days for medecine, finally ask for assistance from Social Welfare but couldn't get it since Elaine was working. So we tightened our belts a little more and made do, Elaine's business was growing so we got by somehow. Elaine sewed nearly all the clothes for the kids, which also helped, and baked bread, canned, and cooked very economically.

As usual we were always looking for a step up the ladder so when Cabri was looking for a manager we applied and got it. We made the move in Apr/68. Wow now we were in a town with paved streets, Dr. and hospital. swimming pool, skating rink, just what a family needed. The wages were better. The work load was heavy, but by now Gerry knew the work very well. Elaine once again opened her Beauty Shop in the basement, this time there was competition, which did't bother her any , just did her job and minded her own business, the business grew and grew, working 6 days a week ,finally took it toll, so had to close for a couple of months, to regenerate, then cut back to 5days a week. Life was good ,we went on raising our family, which kept us busy, with band practice, cubs, scouts ,guides, brownies, speed swimming. paper routes.and all the things that go with these things besides homework, etc. We were happy we could afford to give them these opportunities.Life fell into a pattern all was well as long as we spent our money wisley,

Gerry was able to join the church chior, the lions club, was on the community college board of directors, and director for The Canadian community College, and director for Credit Union managers Assoc.secretary Cabri Chamber of Commerce, was the first member to start printing a monthy news letter for the chamber of commerce. Many hours were spent at the office after hours catching up on work he could'nt get done during work hours, this was his responsibility, and he took it very serious.Often going down after hours to take a loan application from some-one who could'nt come in during hours{this was not a duty}.Every News Years day was spent at the office cutting off the books for the year -end, figuring out the patronage refund, etc. This was an all day job and into the evening, but had to be done.

We both worked very hard and it was begining to show rewards, we had decided to make Cabri our permanent home, so bought an older 4-plex that required a lot of renovating but we got it done ,now Elaine had a Beauty Shop on the main floor no more cement floors,to stand on, no more running up and down stairs, she loved it.

Life was pretty good, money supply was ok considering we were raising a big family.Garnet graduated and had a job in the Bank of Commerce waiting for him July 2nd in Swift Current. Two years latter Rhondalyn graduated and went to work life guarding in Eastend Sask, and Cindy went to work for the summer also life gaurding.Rhondalyn stayed on and worked at the Co-op store, later on worked at the Credit Union in Bigger .then Credit Union in Frontier Sask, Then off to La ronge and worked for an accountant. Cindy decided she had had enough hassel at school, so took a teller training course in Hazlet. She took a job in Scepter Sask ,later to move on to the Royal Bank in Bigger, and later to Swift Current to work at the Bank of Commerce, Got married and they moved to North Battleford where she continued to work for the bank.Mark finished his schooling in Swift Current, he too had problems with favortism at school, couldn't stand being blamed for things he did'nt do.He went on to work as a welder in Frontier, then on to Lloydminister welding,he too went to La Ronge where he worked at carpenter,on to Regina and welded again, met a girl and set their wedding day.Two days before their wedding Gerry's mother passed away suddenly, so was a sad ,& happy time all rolled up together.very difficult to deal with but managed. .Michelle took two years in Swift Current, and finished in Cabri as she had a baby, the beginning of her gr.12.We looked after him while she was at school .Sorry to say he passed away at 4mo.0f crib death.was a very sad time, but the people of Cabri were very kind and caring in our time of sorrow this too was a mixed feeling, as Cindy was trying to plan her wedding, and Michelle was planning a funeral, with our help of course. We were getting sympathy cards and wedding reply cards in the same days mail. However we all wept together, prayed together and laughed together,What a nightmare, just when you think things ca'nt get much worse in fact will get better. All Hell broke loose.

On Dec14th/83, yes, 11 days before Xmas -30c outside and 10:30 at night Gerry was called down to the office. He wondered why at that hour, and such a cold night would he be called to the office unless it was some kind of an emergency but grabbed his coat and went.leaving Michelle , Rhondalyn and Elaine, sitting in dismay as to what the problem was, only to have Gerry come home shortly and proceded to tell us he was fired.Wow!!!! What a shock for all, the girls went wild with anger, and fear ,as did Elaine with fear of Gerrys heart,as we knew he had a heart condition. Gerry broke down and cried, sobbing hysterically, skaking like a leaf in the wind,oh!! !!!my God it was awful,to say the least. e called the Dr who came right away and checked him over, gave him a sedative and some kind words. The rest of the night Elaine and girls sat up all night wandering and worrying what went wrong, only one who has been there would understand what a sensation it is;how hard hearted and cold blooded anyone could be,, to drop a bomb on a family that close to xmas.

The Board suggested it would be a good idea to run the insurance from the office, bringing in more traffic.
We were given one month's holidays each year--so we invested in a hard top camper. We aren't much for camping but the kids loved it. After a couple of years, we traded this off for a truck and camper. This was great--but a bit cramped for our family !! Later on, we purchased a motorhome. This we loved !!It was nice to get away for a month each summer and just relax!.

In 1977, the Hotel Keeper passed away and I was called off holidays to take over management of the hotel. She had left it to her paraplegic son, who had no experience in running a hotel--so I taught him until such time as he could take it over.I spent all my extra hours at the Hotel for about a year--start at 6 a.m. until 8 a.m., then to the Credit Union until 4 or 5 p.m.--back to the hotel until about 10 p.m.Weekends I could work full days.I got paid by the hotel--and of course that was okay by the Board, as long as the Credit Union was benefiting--we held the mortgage !!

Elaine gave a good report on our children's education. We were accustomed to small towns where you were a transient, unless born & raised there--but still we were disappointed when one teacher asked our child #2 if there was any more feeblemindedness in the family. With both of us in business, we didn't ripple the waters by raising hell !Just let it go.

The other hairdresser ( a local) built a new shop in Cabri and rented half of her building to an insurance agent. She was very friendly with the President and one other director, and her husband once mentioned to them that if they could get rid of Elaine, his wife could make a good living.!!

Over the years at Cabri, my office supervisor and myself developed a :Teller Training Course: which we taught after hours. We taught many young people, and when they were ready to hold down a job, we placed a lot of them.

When I was fired, I was given no reason--so it was a shock to the community. When anyone asked the Directors the reason, they just replied they were unable to say anything at the time. While people were behind us, and wondered why I had been fired, I expect the first thing they would think was that I had embezzled some money . So they were torn--after all they had to live in Cabri. We were, after all, transients--even after 16 years. It was difficult--Elaine closed up her shop in January--it was just too hard on her.

Our youngest son had got married quite young and got started on a family .He was out of work, so I got permission from the Board to train him in the C.U.. He had gotten a Criminal Record when he was 16, but this was over 5 years, and it was my belief that you were automatically pardoned after 5 years. However, my President looked into it, and advised me that Mark could not work at the C.U. because he had a criminal record. Apparently, you have to apply for a pardon through the RCMP, after 5 years. So that finished that career before he was hardly started. But, with permission, I hired his wife as Janitor for the C.U. However, the night I got fired, they fired her as well, how cold hard hearted they were. Those two really needed a job until Mark could find something in the welding line in the spring.

I was fired Dec.14, 1983. In March at the Annual Meeting, Elaine and our oldest daughter went to it. They told Elaine she couldn't vote because she wasn't a member--however she argued she was and they finally gave in. When someone asked why I had been fired, they again said they couldn't say anything about that.

In April ('84) with financial hellp from our eldest son, and our RRSP's and part of my pension, we purchased the Hotel at Kelliher Sask... Elaine again opened a shop in the Hotel. When our son was borrowing the money for the Hotel, he was denied by the C.U. there, because I was involved and I had been Black-balled by the C.U. They said I couldn't be bonded !! (I had even been black-balled from Credit Union work in Alberta--so a business on our own was the only answer. Anyway "he our son" got the loan through CIBC in Regina.

At Kelliher , we were notified by Cabri CU, that they were calling our Mortgage. They would not give us any extension terms--so we finally signed a Quit Claim so they could have it faster, with less expence for the CU. We could have hung on ,until they would have to spend a great amout to do the legal work, on the forecloser and all the expence they would have encoured, but we were the nice people and did'nt do that.We just signed off and let our first dear home go to the CU.We lost thousands of dollars, in that deal, but just more misery.

While at Kelliher, we had our Examination for Discovery on the Wrongful Dismissal charge

In September of 1985, we sold the Hotel and moved into a suite at Moose Jaw , in the hotel our son owned at the time..In November /85, I had double by-pass surgery in Regina, and three months later, again with the help of our son, we purchased the Wilcox Motor Inn at Wilcox Sask.

While at Moose Jaw, I was charged with "accepting secret commissions". Tho still weak from my operation, I had to go down to the Police Station for fingerprinting and a mug shot--all this even before I went to trial. This trial went before my Wrongful Dismissal trial--I wonder why???

I was convicted of the "secret Commission" charge and advised I would be sentenced in Regina. I appealed and lost the appeal--the appeal judges suggested to our lawyer that he take it to "Human Rights--"but he decided he didn't want to make a Career of this case.!!!

It was after this I was contacted by Fifth Estate and my case was aired in April of 1987.}

When I was sentenced, I was fined $1000 or 30 days in jail, and I asked for time to pay it. My oldest son offered to pay it for me but I refused, because I felt paying the fine was an admission of guilt, and I was not guilty.. When Fifth Estate found out about the sentence, they phoned me and asked what I was going to do. I decided right then, and told them, that They would have to arrest me, as paying the fine would be an admission of guilt--and I was not guilty.

A few days after that--2 plain clothes police came to the Georgia Hotel (our son now owned this hotel and I was running it, while Elaine & our oldest daughter ran Wilcox. Anyway I told them they'd have to wait a bit while I got someone to relieve me at the front desk. They agreed--and then it was off to Jail ! Out there, they supplied my with Jeans and a T-shirt and they took care of my suit. I had never worn Jeans before--and I still hate them ! Guess I am not much of a redneck !!!

I got to the jail just before noon, and after lunch I was taken up to the Warden's office. He said "Mr.Morris, we really don't want you here--would you consider working off your fine through fine option. I said "Yes,provided this is something offered to all people with similar charges. "He assured me that it was. I told him it would have to be office work, as I refused to pick up papers, etc.in parks or in ditches. He agreed to this okay, and at 6 a.m. the next morning, I was taxi'ed ito the Georgia Hotel, with instructions to report to the "John Howard Society," where I would answer the phone for a few hours each day.

When I got my papers from the Jail, it showed it as $1,000 fine or 60 days in Jail. I phoned the Warden and said it should be 30 days, and would that make any difference to the hours I had to put in. He said yes--they couldn't work me beyond my incarceration date, but his records showed 60 days and I would have to contact the Court House. I did this and they said their records showed 60 days, so I would have to phone the Court House in Swift Current as that was where the trial had been held. I phoned there and got the same answer, so I asked them to check the tapes, as it was only 30 days. A few days later, I got a very nice apologetic letter from them, and reported that to the Warden. So instead of 150 hours, when I reached 70% my time was up so that finished my fine..

Revenue Canada decided I should pay income tax on this money, and without receipts for gas, etc. I wasn't able to get the $10,000.00 bill reduced. I went to an employee of Revenue Canada and told him I couldn't possibly pay this. The hotel license and everything was in Elaine's name so there was nothing they could attach to. So he suggested I GO THROUGH Bankruptcy--which I did.

By going through Bankruptcy, I was disqualified from having a Credit Card, or borrowin g money.

Very degrading for someone who had such a good credit rating.. It was six years before I could get a credit Card. But life went on not a good life very hard work for people our age, but with long tiring hours managed . Again Elaine opened her Beauty shop, there was a very good business there with

The college of Notre Dame students and no barber or hairdresser, again she was very succesful, with a full dat job, and work in the bar at night, not much time to even think much less worry.

This whole ordeal made our kids very bitter and none of them has any desire to go to Cabri. We have been back a few times, and been well accepted. But most people are ashamed of the way we were treated and to this very day .We don't think they really know what happened, most say Gerry sure got a dirty deal, and it was kept so quiet they did'nt know if they could do anything in case he really had done something wrong.

In 1997, we gave up the Hotel at Wilcox, and retired to Delburne. Life goes on, but not without our ups and downs. . Our youngest son took his own life in July of 1999 and one month later, our oldest daughter took hers...It was not because of their 'hurts' from Cabri---or did that contribute ??

In any case, our faith in God is strong and we receive much Strength from Him.

Now you have a novel !Use what information you require and get back to us.

Sincerely, Gerry & Elaine.

In looking over this, I notice I have lost a paragraph from the top--dont know how it happened. Believe it was about getting my Insurance License while at Tompkins, and I took it with me to Cabri. Cabri was not so far away, I could still service my policy holders in Tompkins. Anyway, the Cabri Board decided it would be a good thing to have the insurance business in the office, to draw in more traffic.

Sheila Steelehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10806511293945949036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10133448.post-1105638620955311022005-01-13T09:41:00.000-08:002005-01-13T09:50:20.956-08:00A blog for the Cabri conferenceThis is really a test. Eric Malling was the reporter. It was conducted in hard-hitting Malling style and the story, roughly, was this: Two lawyers from a Swift Current law firm had approached Morris, who was then manager of the Credit Union in Cabri, Saskatchewan. Morris had been helping clients complete the legal work for their mortgages.

To make a long story short, the lawyers involved in this story all moved on to have prestigious careers while Gerald Morris was hung out to dry.

It is our belief that if a wrong can be set right, we should do everything we can to make it so.

The Morris family was settled and happy in the community of Cabri. They were forced to leave because Gerald refused to play the game of corruption any more. The Morris story is but one example of how communities are destroyed but it is a clear example.

It has been suggested that Cabri would be a good location for a conference on community.
Sheila Steelehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10806511293945949036noreply@blogger.com
