One of these guys is not like the others!

Maybe I'm being unfair to poor Ray Lewis. He is tied for 8th in the NFL in tackles with 83 and has 2 sacks (tied for 96th along with Detroit's Larry Foote and Pittsburgh's Aaron Smith who has been out for several weeks), 5 passes defended and 2 forced fumbles.

I guess we should be happy that the NFL is promoting a player on a mediocre team. However, perhaps the Jets' David Harris (88 tackles; 3.5 sacks; 1 INT; 1 forced fumble) San Francisco's Patrick Willis (96 tackles; 2.5 sacks; 2 interceptions) or Kirk Morrison of the Raiders (84 tackles) weren’t exciting enough and don't yell and do silly dances prior to games. Heaven forbid the NFL should highlight Denver's Elvis Dumervil (12 sacks); Minnesota's Jared Allen (10.5 sacks) or even the 2008 Defensive MVP James Harrison (10 sacks; 4 forced fumbles) over Ray-Ray.

You can vote for Ray Lewis or anyone else at NFL.com.

* Let's call this an extension of Trivia Tuesday!

Trivia Tuesday: A-List Actresses Edition

Although I missed trivia last week, my teammates were gracious enough to provide the questions for your Trivia Tuesday pleasure. He is wet.
4:50 - Sean: Walks back to bed.
4:50 - Ziggy: Tries to grab my leg to prevent me from returning to bed.
4:53 - Ziggy: Jumps on dresser, knocks remote controls on to the floor.
4:55 - Ziggy: Jumps on nightstand again, meows in preparation of batting blinds.
4:56 - Sean: Gets out of bed, Ziggy follows.
4:56 - Sean: Makes sure Ziggy is out of bedroom, closes door.
5:30 - Ziggy: Meows loudly. Throws himself against bedroom door. Eventually successful in opening door.
5:35 - Sean: Gets out of bed, walks to kitchen, feeds Ziggy.
5:35 - Ziggy: Purrs & eats.
5:36 - Sean: Goes back to bed.
8:30 - Sean: Wakes up, Ziggy is curled up and sleeping comfortably against my feet. He's very cute.

I really, really, really love my kitten, but unfortunately, this is almost a daily occurrence. He's so cute, affectionate, playful and loving 23 hours of the day; it's just that other one hour. But how can you not love this guy:

<img style="display:block; For those of you who have only heard of Movember from my blog, here's more about this special month and other folks growing their own mustaches:

- The Huffington Post features Movember
- The Ball State University men's lacrosse team are growing mustaches for Movember.
- Canada's Alpine Ski team is in.
- Here are 10 literary mustaches for Movember. (h/t WahooJ)

I hope that you consider donating to Movember by clicking on this link. The donations are tax deductible and go to a great cause! In addition, thanks to the folks who have already contributed!

Finally, prepare to be Wann-stache'd!

h/t Pitt Blather

* What does it say that I felt the need to identify this country's Attorney General but not a musician and a wrestler?

Blues Traveler: Classic Rock?

My brother called me yesterday in a panic. It had nothing to do with a personal matter or the fact that his fantasy football team lost two straight games. No, he was listening to a classic rock station and they played Run Around by Blues Traveler. He was devastated that a song from his (and my) youth and as he said, "his generation" was now considered classic rock. Let's skip the fact that my brother is the first person since The Who to talk about his generation and also that this makes him "feel old" for possibly the first time in his life.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 318px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dAd_RHGzUx0/SwQIORPunkI/AAAAAAAABQ0/tJ3WdyNr6N8/s320/Blues+Traveler.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405454493992001090"/>

I think the bigger issue is what's considered classic rock. Run Around was released approximately 15 years ago. Is 15 years enough time for a song to be considered classic? My point to him is that I've heard Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit debuted only a few years before Run Around) on classic rock stations before; however, Nirvana may have become "classic" earlier since Kurt Cobain has been dead for 15 years. That doesn't seem to make a point for or against the argument, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

Let's open up the phone lines and hear what you have to say.

Cortaca 2009 Recap

We interrupt Trivia Tuesday for a special presentation. Trivia Tuesday will return next week at its regularly scheduled time. [Update - See the end of this post for two trivia questions.]

When I wrote a preview of the 2009 Cortaca Jug game last week, I mentioned that I had a bet with The Sports Chick where I would win a guest post on her blog when Ithaca College won. This is what I wrote (and you can also see it for yourself on The Sports Chick blog):

The Sports Chick was kind enough to agree to a wager in which I would write a guest post on her blog when Ithaca College defeated Cortland State in this year's Cortaca Jug game. In the slim chance that Cortland actually won, she would have written something on my blog, but naturally, Ithaca was victorious. The Sports Chick really didn't think she would win, did she? Perhaps she just wanted a day off from writing, so that's why she agreed to this wager!

Anyway, Ithaca College won Saturday's game 23-20 at Butterfield Stadium in Ithaca, New York. That now makes three straight wins for Ithaca against Cortland and a 34-17 lead in the overall series. Using my incredible math skills, that means IC has won 67% of the Cortaca Jug games over the past 51 years. That would suck to be a Cortland fan and deal with so many loses to your rival.

Since I have the floor, er, blog, I want to point out Cortland coach Dan MacNeill's quote leading up to the Cortaca game. He said, "The Cortland-Ithaca matchup is a big rivalry although this game is just the same as any other. The field measures the same as it does over in Ithaca as it does here."

Was the variation of the Normal Dale-Hoosiers quote really necessary? Cortland's Juniors and Seniors played at IC in 2007 and the team is not going to confuse Butterfield Stadium with Ohio Stadium or the Rose Bowl. Actually, maybe the field measurements are different at Ithaca and that caused Cortland to lose. That and the fact that Ithaca has a better football team!

Finally, although Ithaca College (along with Cortland) finished 7-3 and failed to reach the Division 3 playoffs, this marked the 39th straight winning season for the Bombers. It's nice supporting winning teams like the Bombers, Penguins, Steelers, and the Pirates when they start winning again at some point in the next decade.

Although this was nice writing about Ithaca's success on a Cortland fan's blog, if we make a similar wager next year, I'd like dinner at A&W!

Go Bombers!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dAd_RHGzUx0/SwLfUBqG-EI/AAAAAAAABQs/fI4YAOSb6Eg/s320/Ithaca+College+Cayuga+Lake.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405128037933447234"/>

(This picture has nothing to do with the game; just a few campus buildings and the view of Cayuga Lake.)

Want more about the 2009 Cortaca game? The Steelers lost to the Bengals yesterday because Pittsburgh couldn't convert on third down or in the red zone, the special teams gave up their third kick-off return for a touchdown in four games, Ben Roethlisberger had his worst game since early 2008 and Cincinnati's offensive and defensive lines outplayed their counterparts. Perhaps you can blame me. Sunday was the first game since the Steelers-Chargers AFC Championship game nearly 15 years ago where the Steelers lost when I was in attendance. I had my Terrible Towel, Heinz pickle watch and Louis Lipps jersey, so nothing out of the ordinary. The moustache couldn't be the reason why the Steelers lost, could it?*

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dAd_RHGzUx0/SwGMbTF_WNI/AAAAAAAABQk/Z050x_n28h8/s320/DSCI0788.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404755428431059154"/>

In reality, we should turn our attention to NBC Late Night host Jimmy Fallon. When Troy Polamalu appeared on the show last Tuesday night, Fallon quickly brought up the Madden Curse and showed the Madden 10 cover featuring Polamalu and Larry Fitzgerald. Polamalu said that he didn't want to talk about it, but Fallon continued this egregious line of questioning until Polamalu, being the nice guy that he is, relented and spoke very briefly about it. So what happens on Sunday? Polamalu left the game in the first quarter due to a knee injury. Therefore, I blame you, Mr. Fallon! Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Kimmel would never do such a thing! I hope that Jay Leno takes over your 12:30 slot!

(In case you want to see Troy, not Fallon of course, the interview starts around the 28:30 mark.)

* I say no since this is a lucky mustache. Anyway, I'm cutting and pasting this information I received about a pre-game ceremony honoring Mean Joe Greene.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the famous Coca-Cola commercial with Greene that TV Guide called one the best commercials ever. Well, this fall marks the 30th anniversary of the ad and Greene will be at Heinz Field this Sunday (11/15) to accept his Clio award for his work in the ad, which recognizes creative excellence in advertising.

Greene won the award in 1979 but wasn’t available to accept the award at the time, and never received the hardware over the past 30 years. Coca-Cola recently secured the trophy and is presenting it to Greene in the special pre-game ceremony with Tommy Okon, the boy in the commercial who famously offered Joe his Coke. As part of the event, Greene and Okon will reunite for the first time in years.

So there you go. Therefore, Jim Shearer breaks down Monday night's Steelers-Broncos game and provides holiday shopping tips from the NFL catalog.

On to this week as Tecmo and Cotter discuss the game in their [Unnamed] pregame show.

Finally, this video regarding the origin of the Steelers' use of Styx's "Renegade" will definitely get you pumped up.

h/t Mondesi's House

Go Steelers!

Cortaca 2009 Preview

The 2009 Cortaca Jug game, also called the "Biggest Little Game in America" by Sports Illustrated, is this Saturday at noon at Ithaca College's Butterfield Stadium. Ithaca College (6-3) comes into this game winning two straight games against Cortland State (7-2) in the series. The Division 3 playoffs look unlikely for both teams, but that doesn't diminish the importance of this game.

As the self-proclaimed unofficial blogger of Ithaca College football and the Cortaca Jug game, I feel like it is my responsibility to share my knowledge with you. Fortunately, the Steelers’ Super Bowl victory and Penguins’ march to the Stanley Cup prevented that from happening. Unfortunately (for some of you), the Steelers used their first-round draft pick on a defensive lineman named Ziggy (Hood), so this gave me more opportunities to write about our kitten, now cat, in the context of the Steelers. A win-win for everyone!

Up until today, all of my posts about Ziggy have been positive as I shared cute pictures of him and stories about my life as a pet owner. However, Ziggy seems to be attracted to wires lately. Specifically, he discovered the power cord to our home computer. Now I may or may not have shared that this 5+ year-old laptop is terrible. It’s extremely slow and is pretty much useless except for allowing me to type and publish blog posts (which could also be useless if you’re not a fan of my blog). Anyway, Ziggy managed to chew partially through the power cord so that it no longer works. This is especially a problem since the computer battery literally lasts about 90 seconds without the power cord.

Please excuse me for a brief tangent. As part of TMI Thursday a few months ago, I shared that I am not handy and that Home Depot scares me. I also know very little about computers or how to repair computer software or hardware. I was told that I could fix the cord destroyed by Ziggy by cutting off the damaged portion, splicing the wire together, and then covering it with electrical tape. As you can probably guess, I’m not exactly comfortable doing this as I envision the cord and computer catching on fire due to my handywork. Therefore, I went to Best Buy today to see if the Geek Squad could help. They told me that they won’t touch the cord, but that I can replace it for the low cost of $105. My next stop was Radio Shack who offered to sell me the materials to splice and tape the wire but not to repair it themselves. The cost for a brand new cord at The Shack is $100.

While I’m not sure what I’m going to do (my current goal is to try to find a used cord that no one is using anymore), Ziggy must be punished for the destruction he caused. Therefore, I am sad to report that Ziggy has been banished into the wilderness. Don’t feel bad for Ziggy as the sweet kitten may actually be an evil cat as evidenced by this picture.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dAd_RHGzUx0/SvtqjbPZsiI/AAAAAAAABQM/I5eCgXLEMaI/s320/Evil+Ziggy.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403029334801363490"/>

We wish Ziggy well in his future endeavors!

For more TMI Thursdays, please visit LiLu and you can click here to see all of my TMI Thursday archives.

John Allen Muhammad & The Death Penalty

If you stopped by today looking for trivia, funny Steelers stories or more pictures of my mustache, I apologize as I'm going to be a little serious. I'm guessing that this post's title might have been a tip off! Anyway, John Allen Muhammad was executed Tuesday evening by lethal injection. I'm conflicted over this. I am generally against the death penalty as I find the practice barbaric and it does not represent a deterrent. At the same time, I feel like Muhammad deserved the death penalty. For those of you not familiar with Muhammad, he and Lee Boyd Malvo, who was a teenager at the time, killed 10 innocent and random people in October 2002 and wounded several others. They killed someone at a Home Depot parking lot and another at a gas station. They shot and wounded a child near a school. There really was no
rhyme or reason to their killings.

The entire DC area lived in fear over a three-week period. There was no outdoor recess at schools and many sporting events across the region were cancelled. People walked in a zig-zag fashion on the street and ran from their cars into stores and homes. Gas stations put up tarps around the pumps. Everyone listened to the radio or watched local news to hear about another shooting. Every white van was looked at suspiciously. It truly was a scary time to live here.

Muhammad's death doesn't end a chapter, close a book or whatever metaphor you want to use. I doubt the families and friends of those he killed feel closure. How can there be when a loved one's life ends tragically, much earlier than it should, and for no reason?

Thoughts?

There's more about this in The Washington Post and Yahoo/AP.

Trivia Tuesday: Name the Movie Band

Happy Tuesday everyone! If the Steelers lost last night, I would not have started this post with this phrase, but a Steelers win equals a Happy Tuesday! Anyway, your challenge this week is to name the movie based on the famous fictional band. The quiz begins (dramatic pause), NOW!

1. Citizen Dick
2. The Thamesmen
3. The Good Old Boys
4. The Soggy Bottom Boys
5. The Wonders
6. Stillwater
7. Steel Dragon
8. Randy Watson and Sexual Chocolate
9. The Lone Rangers
10. Wyld Stallyns

For trivia night, we were presented with a list of movies, so the challenge was to match the band with the movie. I'm not going to include the movie titles, for now, but if you're struggling (and ask nicely), we can play the match game later.

As usual, please leave your responses in the comments section below and please don't search the internet for answers. Plus, all donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Thank you!

(And yes, I will definitely continue to post photos of my mustache throughout Movember)

Santonio Holmes' Hyperbaric Chamber*

The big discussion surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers this week is whether or not Ryan Clark will play in Denver against the Broncos. Without going into the entire story here (since many of you probably already know about this), Clark nearly died from a reaction in his blood to the sickle cell caused by playing in the high elevation. The Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette asked WR Santonio Holmes about this since he also has the sickle-cell trait. While Holmes said that he'll be fine, this quote stood out for me:

"I have an oxygen chamber at home, a hyperbaric chamber at home, so I'll definitely, probably spend the rest of this week sleeping in it to get a feel for how it will be."

We'll skip the definitely, probably portion of the quote to focus on the hyperbaric chamber. Where does someone get one of these? If I installed a hyperbaric chamber in my condo and had it convey, could I significantly increase the asking price?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dAd_RHGzUx0/SvG9tjzlQBI/AAAAAAAABPM/Fgn3JCMeqxI/s320/Hyperbaric+Chamber.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400306018597290002" />

This doesn't look very comfortable, but perhaps Holmes has the best hyperbaric chamber on the market. He probably has a king-size version of the hyperbaric chamber with a built-in speaker system. I know that I would!

* This title could make for an excellent blog name.

Trivia Tuesday: Alcohol Edition

OK alcoholics out there. Today's Trivia Tuesday tests your knowledge of mixed drinks. Your challenge is to name the type of generic alcohol that's the MAIN ingredient in the following cocktails:

1. Margarita

2. Singapore Sling

3. Daiquiri

4. Mimosa

5. Harvey Wallbanger

6. Fuzzy Navel

7. Mint Julep

In case you're wondering, we scored an 8 out of 10 (I think). How will you do? As usual, please leave your responses in the comments section below and please don't search the internet for answers.
