The topic, suggested by me, was mysteries with music in them. Bill Moody is a drummer who writes the Evan Horne mysteries. He's made Evan a piano player instead of a drummer, and he interweaves famous music mysteries from the past, like what really happened to Chet Baker, in with modern mysteries that Evan solves. He very graciously wrote me a blurb for Sweet man Is Gone, so it was a pleasure to meet him in person. Don Bruns writes the Mick Sever mysteries. Mick is a rock journalist, but Don himself plays the guitar and in fact gave an impromptu performance at the banquet. The Killer Nashville custom is to present a guitar to the guest of honor--Dr. Bill Bass from the Body Farm this year--in honor of Nashville's link with country music. Usually the guest of honor protests that he can't play the guitar, so this year, and last year as well, Don rose to the occasion and played and sang. He sounded good.Peggy Ehrharthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16922773701031228583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1001156153899984046.post-60015999288401331502008-08-13T19:05:00.000-05:002008-08-13T19:05:00.000-05:00Peggy! I had a huge crush on him in college.

Also- I literally used to dream about King Henry V. I actually started having a crush on him when he wasn't king yet. I thought he was so --clever, and smart, and independent, and strong. (And he had a wonderful way of always speaking in iambic pentameter unless he was yelling at someone.)
Strange.

In music news, did anyone hear Michael Palmer and his son Danny blow the lid off The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald at Thrillerfest? Michael wrote new words, all about wanting to be on the NYT bestseller list.

I should email him for the exact words--right now I just remember bursting out laughing when he rhymed "fire in the belly" with "Sophie Kinselly."

(I can't play anything. It's pitiful. Or sing? NO way. But I'd love to hear you, Peggy! Gotta go for Arthur.
I was kind of in love with Inspector Alleyn, too. And Peter Wimsey.
And dare we mention Reacher? It's harder to crush on the anti-heroes more common today.

Music? Neil Diamond. And I love to watch conductors, the ones who go big and lyrical. And then there's our own Jan....and some guy named Stephen King. Has anyone ever suggested that you guys may be overachievers? Seriously, I'm jealous of anyone that can make music.
Maybe you'll play at an upcoming MWA event..Rosemary Harrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08033747422699443024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1001156153899984046.post-30407925278385456192008-08-13T08:22:00.000-05:002008-08-13T08:22:00.000-05:00Oh yes, the glam of literature professors. He was a dreamboat - dark hair, dark eyes. Many of the freshmen & sophomore girls had a crush on him. None of us could understand what he saw in his wife - a skinny, not so pretty woman who taught modern dance. He did have his coterie of groupies who hung out at his home. The rumor was that they all shared LSD & had interesting times. I don't know - I was too shy to be so bold as to show up at his house.Jodynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1001156153899984046.post-272879647866168612008-08-13T06:51:00.000-05:002008-08-13T06:51:00.000-05:00welcome to JR Peggy! I can imagine just the feeling you're describing--the yearning for someone in the band. My first one was Mickey Dolenz (the Monkees, of course!)Roberta Isleibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04660402177299546055noreply@blogger.com
